Temperament involves stable behavioral and emotional tendencies that differ between individuals, which can be first observed in infancy or early childhood and relate to behavior in many contexts and over many years.1 One of the most rigorously characterized temperament classifications relates to the tendency of individuals to avoid the unfamiliar and to withdraw from unfamiliar people, objects, and unexpected events. This temperament is referred to as behavioral inhibition or inhibited temperament (IT).2 IT is a moderately heritable trait1 that can be measured in multiple species.3 In humans, levels of IT can be quantified from the first year of life through …

This experiment tested the effectiveness of a novel tactics ideation method (i.e., Random Prompts method) to a modified Brainwriting method. Transcribed copies of this data are also included.

Jihadism in the West has a roughly four-decade long history. Its first, embryonal presence dates back to the 1980s, when scattered groups of Western-based volunteers traveled to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet Union. Around the same time, a few Middle Eastern and North African jihadists fleeing their countries of origin received asylum in various Western countries. Since then, both Europe and North America have steadily been home to pockets of sympathizers of jihadist ideology. The time period in which the Islamic State (IS) controlled territory in Syria and Iraq between 2014 and 2019 coincided with the largest groundswell of homegrown jihadist activity in United States history. This unprecedented wave of jihadist activism, which hit its peak between 2014 and 2016, could be measured through several indicators. Senior officials in the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) testified that the Bureau managed, at any given time between 2014 and 2019, 1,000 active investigations into IS supporters throughout the U.S.; at least 239 alleged supporters were charged in U.S. courts. JOHNSON CITY – Cadets in the Army ROTC Program at East Tennessee State University will be commissioned as second lieutenants this week. 

The 11 a.m. ceremony is at the ETSU Millennium Center auditorium, room 137b, on Friday, Sept. 9. 

Speaking at Friday’s event is retired U.S. Army Col. Brunilda E. Garcia, a decorated veteran with a range of commendations. She holds degrees from the University of Puerto Rico, Webster University and Air University, and she served in Jordan during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

First-generation college student Leo Williams was a junior at another school when he decided to transfer to ETSU. At his previous institution, he played football, but soon after arriving at ETSU, he learned about the opportunities with Greek life, particularly with ETSU’s National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC).

“I was at a cultural mix event and visited a table and talked with a guy about the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity,” Leo said. “I was really interested in the organization, especially all of the service work the organization does. I have always loved helping people and giving back to the community.”

Secondary picketing is picketing by a union aimed at someone other than the employer. It aims to coerce the other person to cut ties with the employer to gain leverage in a labor dispute. Today, secondary picketing is usually illegal; it is an unfair labor practice under section 8(b)(4)(ii)(B) of the National Labor Relations Act. If a union pickets a neutral third party, it can be subject to unfair-labor-practice charges, or even an injunction. This article explores why the Court continues to draw that distinction. The fall of Granada not only marks the end of the Muslim rule of Spain but also denotes the beginning of a time of religious intolerance. Moriscos, Muslims who were forced to become baptized Christians after the fall of Granada in 1492, had to face either expulsion or imprisonment and death if found secretly practicing their religion. This paper attempts to analyze the representation of Moriscos, their ordeal, internal conflicts, and their rebellion in The Hand of Fatima (2009) written by Ildefonso Falcones, a Spanish writer and one of Spain’s best-selling authors. Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (Anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is one of the most commonly emerging autoimmune encephalitis in children and young adults in recent years. Clinical manifestations range from prodromal symptoms to seizures, movement disorder, psychiatric manifestations, cognitive/speech impairment, and autonomic dysfunction. Our case presented with initial symptoms of severe episodic hypertension, sweating, agitation, and tachycardia. She received early care for pheochromocytoma and panic disorder in Qatar, but there was no relief. Three weeks later, she presented in our emergency room with seizures, cognitive/speech impairment, and orofacial dyskinesia. Electroencephalography (EEG) revealed right hemispheric delta activity and cerebrospinal fluid CSF anti-NMDA Receptor IgG was positive. …

Forces used during orthodontic tooth movement can cause permanent loss of apical surfaces of teeth and although most reported cases of root resorption are asymptomatic, the process is irreversible and often unpredictable. This chapter reviews the literature surrounding autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their relation to gastrointestinal (GI), behavioral, neurological, and immunological functioning. Individuals with ASDs often have poor GI health, including bowel motility issues, autoimmune and/or other adverse responses to certain foods, and lack of necessary nutrient absorption. These issues may be caused or exacerbated by restrictive behavioral patterns (e.g., preference for sweet and salty foods and/or refusal of healthy foods). Those individuals with GI issues tend to demonstrate more behavioral deficits (e.g., irritability, agitation, hyperactivity) and also tend to have an imbalance in overall gut microbiome composition, thus corroborating several …

Coronary artery disease (CAD), a consequence of coronary atherosclerosis, is the most common form of cardiovascular disease. Recent research suggests that compared to individuals with normal sleep duration, those with insufficient sleep, defined as short sleep duration (i.e., less than 6 hours per 24-hour period) have a 79% higher risk of developing coronary artery disease.
