Understanding Physical Properties Of Gas Bubbles In The Ocean: How Does Reality Affect What We Think We Already Know?, Alexandra Michelle Padilla Sep 2022

Understanding Physical Properties Of Gas Bubbles In The Ocean: How Does Reality Affect What We Think We Already Know?, Alexandra Michelle Padilla

Doctoral Dissertations

The importance of methane as a greenhouse gas has led to widespread research focused on understanding the sinks and sources for atmospheric methane. One source of atmospheric methane could include methane bubbles released from the ocean’s seafloor. These gas bubbles transport methane from the seafloor through the ocean’s water column, and the methane released during their ascent affects water column geochemistry and microbial populations. Under certain physical and chemical conditions, methane transported by gas bubbles can reach the upper water column and potentially leak across the sea-air interface. The dynamics of gas bubble emission, ascent, and dissolution in the water …

Introduction: How American Literature Understands Poverty, Clare E. Callahan, Joseph Entin, Irvin Hunt, Kinohi Nishikawa

English Faculty Publications

Together, the essays in this issue of American Literature stage what is at stake in how literature understands poverty, elucidating not only the problem of poverty but also, and especially, the problem of how we see it. To see poverty differently, they might conclude, is not only a matter of what we see. It is a matter of reflecting on how we see.

Breast Cancer In Geriatric Patients: Current Landscape And Future Prospects, Hikmat Abdel-Razeq, Fawzi Abu Rous, Fawzi Abuhijla, Nayef H. Abdel-Razeq, Sarah Edaily

Hematology/Oncology Articles

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women worldwide and more than half are diagnosed above the age of 60 years. Life expectancy is increasing and the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed among older women are expected to increase. Undertreatment, mostly due to unjustifiable fears of advanced-age and associated comorbidities, is commonly practiced in this group of patients who are under-represented in clinical trials and their management is not properly addressed in clinical practice guidelines. With modern surgery and anesthesia, breast surgeries are considered safe and is usually associated with very low complication rates, regardless of extent …

Improving Numerical Model Predicted Float Trajectories By Deep Learning, Dongliang Shen, Shaowu Bao, Lenard J. Pietrafesa, Paul Gayes

Marine Science

The Lagrangian tracking approach is often used in numerical modeling (NM) to simulate and predict the movement of marine particles such as plastic, oil spills, and floating wreckage. The uncertainties in NM reduce prediction accuracy as a result of the coarse temporal and spatial resolution, along with waves, winds, and currents. From 29 August to 22 December 2020, the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Ocean of Things program deployed 422 floating drifters in the Gulf of Mexico, providing an opportunity of using the observed trajectories as ground truth to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) models to correct NM float …

Institutions are vital for solving collective action problems and enabling functioning markets. Based on this notion, the institutional voids literature has offered a dynamic research agenda for international business scholarship. In this perspective article, we leverage work from political science, development economics, legal studies, and anthropology to: (a) expose hidden assumptions about institutional voids in the management literature; (b) propose new directions for research based on our revised assumptions; and (c) provide direction-specific theoretical constructs from other social sciences to stimulate theory-building and empirical inquiry into institutional voids. We develop a framework that identifies four revised assumptions about institutional voids …

Epigenetic Influences Of Mobile Genetic Elements On Ciliate Genome Architecture And Evolution, Caitlin M. Timmons, Shahed U.A. Shazib, Laura A. Katz Sep 2022

Epigenetic Influences Of Mobile Genetic Elements On Ciliate Genome Architecture And Evolution, Caitlin M. Timmons, Shahed U.A. Shazib, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) are transient genetic material that can move either within a single organism's genome or between individuals or species. While historically considered “junk” DNA (i.e., deleterious or at best neutral), more recent studies reveal the potential adaptive advantages MGEs provide in lineages across the tree of life. Ciliates, a group of single-celled microbial eukaryotes characterized by nuclear dimorphism, exemplify how epigenetic influences from MGEs shape genome architecture and patterns of molecular evolution. Ciliate nuclear dimorphism may have evolved as a response to transposon invasion and ciliates have since co-opted transposons to carry out programmed DNA deletion. Another …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Foraminifera, classified in the supergroup Rhizaria, are a common and highly diverse group of mainly marine protists. Despite their evolutionary and ecological importance, only limited genomic data (one partial genome and nine transcriptomic datasets) have been published for this group. Foraminiferal molecular phylogeny is largely based on 18S rRNA gene sequence analysis. However, due to highly variable evolutionary rates of substitution in ribosomal genes plus the existence of intragenomic variation at this locus, the relationships between and within foraminiferal classes remain uncertain. We analyze transcriptomic data from 28 species, adding 19 new species to the previously published dataset, including members …

Improved A-Efie System For Electromagnetic Simulation In Low Frequency Regime, Wen Jing Chen, Sheng Sun, Yang Liu, Lijun Jiang, Jun Hu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this letter, the quasi-Helmholtz projectors are applied to address numerical cancellation of augmented electric field integral equation (A-EFIE). The projectors rescale the term overline {bf V} cdot i{k}_0{bf j} and right-hand side to guarantee that the solution is stable at very low frequency. The improved system is full rank without removing the singularity caused by charge neutrality. Compared to the EFIE with quasi-Helmholtz projectors, this letter presents a better convergence performance and takes less computational cost. The numerical results show that the solution of both scattering problems and circuit problems can ensure the accuracy in the low-frequency regime.

Online Optimal Adaptive Control Of Partially Uncertain Nonlinear Discrete-Time Systems Using Multilayer Neural Networks, Rohollah Moghadam, Pappa Natarajan, Sarangapani Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article intends to address an online optimal adaptive regulation of nonlinear discrete-time systems in affine form and with partially uncertain dynamics using a multilayer neural network (MNN). The actor-critic framework estimates both the optimal control input and value function. Instantaneous control input error and temporal difference are used to tune the weights of the critic and actor networks, respectively. The selection of the basis functions and their derivatives are not required in the proposed approach. The state vector, critic, and actor NN weights are proven to be bounded using the Lyapunov method. Our approach can be extended to neural …

Value Dimensions Influence Perceptions Towards Immigrants, Prachi Pathak Sep 2022

Value Dimensions Influence Perceptions Towards Immigrants, Prachi Pathak

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Abstract

Researchers have turned to human values as predictors for people’s attitudes toward immigrants. Value- based studies may be effective in producing attitudinal and behavioral changes toward immigrants, as people can be receptive to universal values. The current study compared differences between human values (e.g., benevolence, universalism, power, and achievement) on people’s perceptions toward immigrants. A total sample of 250 participants was collected for the current study. Each participant was randomly assigned to one group (control group, universalism value prime, benevolence value prime, power value prime, or achievement value prime). All participants were given a demographics questionnaire, followed by a …

Architecture Faculty Research

Recent work on intelligent agents is a popular topic among the artificial intelligence community and robotic system design. The complexity of designing a framework as a guide for intelligent agents in an unknown built environment suggests a pressing need for the development of autonomous agents. However, most of the existing intelligent mobile agent design focus on the achievement of agent’s specific practicality and ignore the systematic integration. Furthermore, there are only few studies focus on how the agent can utilize the information collected in unknown build environment to produce a learning pipeline for fundamental task prototype. The hierarchical framework is …

Exposure To Mindfulness Basics Through Existing Habits: A Brief 5-Week Curriculum For Exercisers, Meredith Tedford Sep 2022

Exposure To Mindfulness Basics Through Existing Habits: A Brief 5-Week Curriculum For Exercisers, Meredith Tedford

Mindfulness Studies Theses

This thesis explores the mind-body connection inherent in both physical exercise and mindfulness and how habit-formation can play a key role in introducing regular exercisers to the benefits of mindful practice. New habits are established when they are linked to established daily routines through small modifications to existing patterns of behavior, but this runs counter to how traditional mindfulness practice is typically taught. By providing exercisers with a limited time-commitment and fully integrated opportunity to learn and practice both formal and informal practice as part of weekly exercise, that practice is more likely to be durable. The approach presented here …
