A Heuristic Outlook On The Occupational Accidents Of Food & Beverage Staff In Hotels, Gulsah Akkus, Aytug Arslan, Merve Iscen, Burcu Isik
Journal of Global Business Insights
The labor-intensive structure, 24/7 service availability, diversity of departments including kitchens, housekeeping, and technical services, the high labor turnover ratios, along with the long working hours and shift systems inherent in accommodation establishments all play a role in the occurrence of occupational accidents (OA). Fundamental reasons underlying OA are unsafe behavior and unsafe working conditions. This study analyzes with a qualitative method the OA that occur in the food & beverage (F&B) service department of accommodation establishments from the viewpoint of employees. The study concludes that the majority of these accidents are not high risk, and generally result from unsafe …

The Wisdom In Our Stories: Asian American Motherscholar Voices, Cathery Yeh, Ruchi Agarwal-Rangnath, Betina Hsieh, Judy Yu
Publications and Research
This article centers the counternarratives of four Asian American motherscholar teacher educators presented as letters to our children in which we apply tenets of AsianCrit to parenting and education, with racial realism at the forefront. Using Asian Critical Theory and motherscholar research to frame our analysis, themes within and across the data include pressures of cultural assimilation and identity loss, intersectional identities, compliance and resistance to Asianization, and learning from our children. Our Asian American motherscholar stories serve as examples of motherhood as an asset to critical scholarship and praxis.

The Ordos block of the north China craton and its surrounding regions are affected by the India-Eurasia collision to the southwest and the subduction of the Pacific beneath the Eurasian plates to the east. To provide the foundation for delineating lithospheric deformation and asthenospheric flow beneath this tectonically diverse region, we have created a database of individual shear-wave splitting (SWS) parameters by applying a uniform set of data processing procedures. After automatic data processing and manual checking, a total of 16,228 pairs of well-defined PKS, SKKS, and SKS splitting parameters (fast orientations and splitting times) are obtained from 1023 broadband …

Crustal Structure And Subsidence Mechanisms Of The Williston Basin: New Constraints From Receiver Function Imaging, Jianguo Song, Stephen S. Gao, Kelly H. Liu, Muchen Sun, Youqiang Yu, Fansheng Kong, Kevin Mickus
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mechanisms responsible for the long-term subsidence of intracontinental basins such as the Williston Basin in North America remain enigmatic, partly due to the thick sedimentary layer commonly found in the basins that prevents reliably imaging the deep crustal and upper mantle structures using some of the most-commonly employed seismic methods such as receiver function analysis. In this study, we used receiver functions recorded by 274 USArray and other stations in the Williston Basin and adjacent areas to investigate the layered structure of the crust in the hydrocarbon-rich intracontinental basin. After the removal of strong reverberations on the receiver functions associated …

Lived Religion In A Digital Age: Technology, Affect And The Pervasive Space-Times Of “New” Religious Praxis, Quan Gao, Orlando Woods, Lily Kong, Siew Ying Shee
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
This paper explores how Christian practices of prayer are being reconfigured through digital media in Singapore. Although digital technologies are an area of burgeoning interest amongst social and cultural geographers, the ways in which these technologies reconfigure the space-times of religious praxis and engender new affective relations or subjectivities of religion have not yet been embraced. This paper fills the lacuna by bringing existing studies on religion, technology and affect into constructive conversation with each other. By elaborating on digital prayer as an affective assemblage of religious practice, we show how digital technologies blur institutional boundaries and create new affordances …

Many objects of interest in cultural heritage, such as manuscripts, scrolls, and books are faded, damaged, or otherwise unreadable so that useful studies of them are difficult. Fortunately, modern imaging tools, including sensors, lenses, and illumination sources have leveraged multispectral imaging as an accessible method for cultural heritage imaging which has, in turn, increased the demand for its use. To address this, the Rochester Institute of Technology received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (PR-268783-20) to develop a low-cost, portable imaging system with processing software that could be utilized by scholars accessing collections in library, archive, and …

Untold Story Of Human Cervical Cancers: Hpv-Negative Cervical Cancer, Jae-Eun Lee, Yein Chung, Siyeon Rhee, Tae-Hyung Kim
Pathology Research and Scholarship
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common malignancy in women worldwide. Although infection from human papillomavirus (HPV) has been the leading cause of cervical cancer, HPV-negative cervical cancer accounts for approximately 3-8% of all cases. Previous research studies on cervical cancer have focused on HPV-positive cervical cancer due to its prevalence, resulting in HPV-negative cervical cancer receiving considerably less attention. As a result, HPV-negative cervical cancer is poorly understood. Its etiology remains elusive mainly due to limitations in research methodology such as lack of defined markers and model systems. Moreover, false HPV negativity can arise from inaccurate diagnostic methods, which …

Some people have a passion for a single topic that motivates and engages them for life. I’m not one of them. I can get interested in almost anything, and my career looks more like a random walk through a candy store than a single-minded pursuit of a goal. I am both a theorist and researcher in the field of emotion and a contributor to the application of psychology to legal issues. In this piece I will focus on my work in psychology and law. A review of my research on emotion can be found in Ellsworth and Scherer (2003).

The Planck All-Sky Survey to Analyze Gravitationally-lensed Extreme Starbursts project aims to identify a population of extremely luminous galaxies using the Planck all-sky survey and to explore the nature of their gas fuelling, induced starburst, and the resulting feedback that shape their evolution. Here, we report the identification of 22 high-redshift luminous dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z = 1.1-3.3 drawn from a candidate list constructed using the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources and Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer all-sky survey. They are confirmed through follow-up dust continuum imaging and CO spectroscopy using AzTEC and the Redshift Search Receiver on the …
What’S The Use?: Interpreting The Term “Uses” In The Aggravated Identity Theft Provision, Shang-Chi Andrew Liu
What’S The Use?: Interpreting The Term “Uses” In The Aggravated Identity Theft Provision, Shang-Chi Andrew Liu
University of Chicago Law Review
The Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act (ITPEA) increases penalties for crimes that involve the unlawful use of another person’s identifying information. A subsection of the ITPEA—the aggravated identity theft provision—imposes a mandatory two-year sentencing enhancement on a defendant who “uses” a means of identification of another person during and in relation to a predicate felony. Currently, federal circuit courts disagree about whether the term “uses” in the statute is ambiguous and whether the rule of lenity should consequently apply to narrow its reach. On the one hand, courts that have held the statute to be ambiguous apply the rule of …
Untangling The Prison Mailbox Rules, Mario Ramirez
Untangling The Prison Mailbox Rules, Mario Ramirez
University of Chicago Law Review
Unlike typical litigants, pro se prisoners are unable to deliver filings to court or to have an attorney do so on their behalf. Such prisoners are forced to rely on their prisons’ mailing systems to file documents, which often results in those documents reaching the court after the applicable deadlines. Accordingly, the Supreme Court created a “prison mailbox rule” in Houston v. Lack, under which some filings by prisoners are considered filed when they are given to prison officials for mailing, rather than when they reach the court.
Defining the exact reach of that prison mailbox rule has created considerable …
Two Modes Of Cyclicality In The Ancient World, Yanming An
Two Modes Of Cyclicality In The Ancient World, Yanming An
Comparative Civilizations Review
The cyclical view of time and history appears in two modes represented respectively by the Indo-Hellenic and the Chinese tradition. The former contains a conception of Mahayuga or Great Year, which signifies the periodic destruction and reconstruction in the cosmos and human world. In addition, it analogizes human affairs to the celestial cycle and therefore generalizes the mode of cyclical movements in both the cosmos and the human world as “uniform rotation.” In contrast, the Chinese tradition incorporates Heaven and human into a unity, containing no conception of periodic interruption in the movement of Heaven-human unity. At the same, it …

Comparative Civilizations Review
If one were to choose two words to characterize the books under review, they would be ambiguity and nostalgia. Both are personal reflections of how the final years of Frenchruled Algeria affected the authors.
Mokhtar Mokhtefi (1935-2015) was an Algerian Muslim freedom fighter who, in 1956, having completed high school at the Lycée Aumale in Constantine, enlisted in the National Liberation Army (ALN) of Algeria. We follow his story from early childhood in Berroughaia, a small town south of Algiers, to his re-entry into Algeria from Tunisia in July 1962, just as Algeria achieved independence.

Book Review: Zheng Wang. Never Forget National Humiliation: Historical Memory In Chinese Politics And Foreign Relations, Constance Wilkinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
“Never Forget National Humiliation!”? Really? Yes. This is Zheng Wang’s very interesting study of the post-Mao Chinese Communist Party’s massive re-education campaign. It was created in the years following the Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989 when post-Mao CCP hard-liners approved a military response to civilian protesters that would crush China’s emerging pro-democracy movement.

Impact Of Vitamin D Elements And Osteoporosis Factors In Postmenopausal Iraqi Women With T2dm, Howraa Alkabi, Wafaa Alfatlawi, Muhammed Aldabagh
Journal of Applied Sciences and Nanotechnology
Osteoporosis is a systematic bone disorder characterized by bone mass loss and bone tissue architectural degeneration. The incidence of osteoporosis in women increases with age, reflecting the considerable increase in bone loss rate in postmenopausal women once estrogen loses its protective influence. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of Osteocalcin, Vitamin D, and other parameters that influence bone quality and increased bone fragility in postmenopausal Iraqi women with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The levels of vitamin D receptor and vitamin D binding protein in serum are studied for the first time in our study. The …

Despite the limitations on time for career preparedness and shrinking professional development budgets, mentoring remains as important as ever due to the interconnectedness in a global society and the changing demographics of postsecondary education students. The traditional-age population in college that lives on campus and does not work has been declining for over three decades. The majorities of current students that are now non-traditional, and work at least part-time are first-generation, and are pursuing degrees via distance or online learning. The importance of providing a diverse mentoring strategy for this new population is borne out in research in order to …

Be Smart, Save I/O: A Probabilistic Approach To Avoid Uncorrectable Errors In Storage Systems, Md Arifuzzaman, Masudul Bhuiyan, Mehmet Gumus, Engin Arslan
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Silent data corruption poses a significant risk to the integrity of data in storage systems. Although error correction codes (ECC) can recover the majority of such errors, a nonnegligible portion of them escape ECC, referred as uncorrectable errors (UEs). Despite being rare in nature, increasing scale of storage systems and fast-growing I/O rates decreased the mean time between UEs from months to hours. Yet, unlike disk failures, UEs are hard to predict with high precision, making it difficult to adopt proactive measures. In this paper, we introduce a probabilistic approach to deploy UE mitigation strategies that can capture significant portion …

Chloride binding capacity is one of the important factors affecting chloride induced rebar corrosion in reinforced concrete structures. Moreover, the stability of Friedel's salt will also affect the chloride binding capacity of cement-based materials. This study investigates the effect of graphene oxide (GO) on the chloride binding capacity of cement paste and stability of Friedel's salt under different pH conditions. Experiments of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were performed to analyze the phase assemblage, micro morphology, element ratio and the enhanced mechanisms. Results showed that the 0.2 wt% GO addition …
