Cole Recognized As “Reviewer Of The Year” For Prestigious Economics Journal, James Owsley Boyd

A Maurer School of Law faculty member has been recognized for his contributions to reviewing interdisciplinary research for the Journal of Institutional Economics. Professor Dan Cole, Robert H. McKinney Professor of Law and a senior fellow with the Ostrom Workshop, was named one of three “Reviewers of the Year” by the journal on Wednesday (Sept. 7). The announcement was made during the annual World Interdisciplinary Network for Institutional Research (WINIR) Conference. The award, which comes with a £400 prize, recognizes outstanding reviewers for the journal.

Re-Evaluating Learning Environments To Nurture Studio Culture, Ceri Almrott

Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant remote teaching that lockdown enforced the requirements and suitability of physical learning spaces such as studios can be questioned. This paper seeks to understand the requirements of students in this decade of their physical studio spaces. Using focus groups, surveys and user feedback activities students on the Product Design programme were asked to evaluate the studio spaces within the university as they returned to on-campus learning and provide qualitative feedback on their experiences.

JOHNSON CITY (Sept. 8, 2022) – East Tennessee State University faculty members with Clemmer College were recently awarded $1.25 million  in grant funding to support a project known as the Rural Initiative for Training Administrators with Special Education Expertise (RITASEE), which aims to enhance service for all students in rural school settings by strengthening current leadership practices related to communication and collaboration; developing evidence-based school improvement systems to serve diverse learners; advocating for district and school-wide inclusive practices; and promoting positive school culture for all students.

Oncocytic Papillary Cystadenoma Of The Larynx: A Rare And Masquerading Entity., Samuel Bosco, James Ding, Christopher Fundakowski

We cared for a 59-year-old female smoker who presented with a supraglottic lesion mimicking a laryngeal saccular cyst. The lesion was found to be a oncocytic papillary cystadenoma. This is a rare, benign neoplasm that accounts for 2–4.7% of minor salivary gland neoplasms. Oncocytic papillary cystadenoma of the larynx is even more rare, compromising less than 1% of all benign laryngeal neoplasms. This case highlights the importance of comprehensive differential diagnosis for cystic laryngeal lesions.

Objective:To explore the relationship between functional properties of rice glutelin fibril aggregates (RGFAs) solution formed by different storage and heating time.Methods:The RGFAs samples were prepared by heating rice glutelin (RG) at 85 ℃ and pH 2.0 for 2~15 h, and stored at 4 ℃ for 1 day and 4 days, respectively. The surface hydrophobicity, emulsifying property, shear viscosity of RGFAs samples as well as the gelatinization characteristics and hydrolysis rate of the mixture of RGFAs and starch were measured.Results:After storage at 4 ℃ for 4 days, the emulsifying properties were significantly improved. Metastatic uveal melanoma (mUM) is an advanced ocular malignancy characterized by a hepatotropic pattern of spread. As the incidence of brain metastases (BM) in mUM patients has been thought to be low, routine CNS surveillance has not been recommended. Notably, no formal assessment of BM incidence in mUM has to date been published to support this clinical practice. We aimed to determine the true rate of BM in mUM and to clarify the clinical and genomic risk factors associated with BM patients through a collaborative multicenter, retrospective research effort. Glucocorticoids (GCs) are heavily prescribed to control inflammation in various human diseases; however, side effects associated with GCs are well documented and lead to serious metabolic and immunological complications with long-term use. The paradigm for GC function includes two well described modes of activity: dimer formation of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) promotes transactivation, while monomeric interaction with co-regulators promotes transrepression. Previously, a set of aryl pyrazole-derived glucocorticoid receptor agonists (APGRAs) with potency rivaling current commercially available glucocorticoids were described. Upland aspen (Populus spp.) forests contribute significantly to biodiversity in their circumboreal role as keystone species. As aspen ecosystems flourish or diminish, myriad dependent species follow suit. The 43-hectare Pando aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) clone in Utah, USA, is thought to be the largest living organism on earth, but is faltering due to chronic herbivory. Long-term resilience in aspen communities, including Pando, rests on successful recruitment of vegetative suckers that are nutritiously desirable to browsing ungulates. This work reviews from a unified viewpoint the concepts underlying the “nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems” (nth-CASAM-L) and the “nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Nonlinear Systems” (nth-CASAM-N) methodologies. The practical application of the nth-CASAM-L methodology is illustrated for an OECD/NEA reactor physics benchmark, while the practical application of the nth-CASAM-N methodology is illustrated for a nonlinear model of reactor dynamics that exhibits periodic and chaotic oscillations. As illustrated both by the general theory and by the examples reviewed in this work, both the nth-CASAM-L and nth-CASAM-N methodologies overcome the curse of dimensionality …

The isolation of an infective pathogen can be challenging in some patients with active, clinically apparent infectious diseases. Despite efforts in the microbiology lab to improve the sensitivity of culture in orthopedic implant-associated infections, the clinically relevant information often falls short of expectations. The management of peri-prosthetic joint infections (PJI) provides an excellent example of the use and benefits of newer diagnostic technologies to supplement the often-inadequate yield of traditional culture methods as a substantial percentage of orthopedic infections are culture-negative. Rates of alcohol use disorder (AUD) are increasing among civilian and veteran populations of women in the United States, and stress pathophysiology (i.e., abnormal acute and long-term change in physiological responses to stress) is central to the maintenance of alcohol misuse within this population. Heart rate variability (HRV) is one measure of stress regulation that may help to explain the association of stress with alcohol misuse among women. In the current analysis of pilot data, 20 women veterans attended an in-person laboratory session and completed 35 daily assessments of their alcohol use and craving. Polylactic acid (PLA) has been widely used as filaments for material extrusion additive manufacturing (AM) to develop patient-specific scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. Hydroxyapatite (HA), a major component of natural bone, has been extensively recognized as an osteoconductive biomolecule. Here, inspired by the mussel-adhesive phenomenon, in this study, polydopamine (PDA) coating was applied to the surface of 3D printed PLA scaffolds (PLA@PDA), acting as a versatile adhesive platform for immobilizing HA nanoparticles (nHA).
