Drosophila Melanogaster As A Model For Male Reproductive System Ethanol Toxicity, Gbemisola Ilelaboye Sep 2022

Drosophila Melanogaster As A Model For Male Reproductive System Ethanol Toxicity, Gbemisola Ilelaboye

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Drosophila melanogaster has been extensively used in different types of research as a model organism due to its high reproductivity, short life span, and easy maintenance. In this paper, we examined drosophila as a model for ethanol toxicity in the male reproductive system. We developed three assays: The DAPI assay, sperm viability assay, and tubulin staining assay. The DAPI assay is a nuclear staining assay that assesses the effects of various ethanol concentrations in late spermiogenesis in which increased detrimental effects to the sperm bundles were observed. The second assay consisted of the sperm viability assay which showed an increase …

Social Predictors Of Doctoral Student Mental Health And Well-Being, Feng Zhang, Kaylee Litson, David F. Feldon Sep 2022

Social Predictors Of Doctoral Student Mental Health And Well-Being, Feng Zhang, Kaylee Litson, David F. Feldon

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Graduate students' mental health and well-being is a prominent concern across various disciplines. However, early predictors of mental health and well-being in graduate education, specifically doctoral education, have rarely been studied. The present study evaluated both the underlying latent classification of individuals' mental well-being and predictors of those classifications. Results estimated two latent classes of students' mental health and well-being: one class with generally high levels of mental well-being and one with lower levels of mental well-being. Regression analyses showed that mentoring in the second year of doctoral study, certainty of choice in the thrid year, and both academic development …

Resonant Plasmonic–Biomolecular Chiral Interactions In The Far-Ultraviolet: Enantiomeric Discrimination Of Sub-10 Nm Amino Acid Films, Tiago Ramos Leite, Lin Zschiedrich, Orhan Kizilkaya, Kevin M. Mcpeak Sep 2022

Resonant Plasmonic–Biomolecular Chiral Interactions In The Far-Ultraviolet: Enantiomeric Discrimination Of Sub-10 Nm Amino Acid Films, Tiago Ramos Leite, Lin Zschiedrich, Orhan Kizilkaya, Kevin M. Mcpeak

Faculty Publications

Resonant plasmonic–molecular chiral interactions are a promising route to enhanced biosensing. However, biomolecular optical activity primarily exists in the far-ultraviolet regime, posing significant challenges for spectral overlap with current nano-optical platforms. We demonstrate experimentally and computationally the enhanced chiral sensing of a resonant plasmonic–biomolecular system operating in the far-UV. We develop a full-wave model of biomolecular films on Al gammadion arrays using experimentally derived chirality parameters. Our calculations show that detectable enhancements in the chiroptical signals from small amounts of biomolecules are possible only when tight spectral overlap exists between the plasmonic and biomolecular chiral responses. We support this conclusion …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Integrated patient care is necessary for better care outcomes. Documentation enhances the integration of care; however, in the Ugandan setting, documentation of care is poor (e.g., omissions and incomplete records) and integration of patient care is not visible. This study presents a review of patient health records that was undertaken to understand documentation of care at a regional referral hospital in Eastern Uganda. This information will help in developing a documentation model to facilitate the integration of patient care in Uganda.

Methodology: This retrospective review involved 513 patient health records from the medical-surgical, pediatric, and obstetric/gynecological departments of Jinja …

The Pioneer Advantage: Filling The Blank Spots On The Map Of Genome Diversity In Europe, Taras K. Oleksyk, Walter Wolfsberger, Khrystyna Schubelka, Serghei Mangul, Stephen James O'Brien

Biology Faculty Articles

Documenting genome diversity is important for the local biomedical communities and instrumental in developing precision and personalized medicine. Currently, tens of thousands of whole-genome sequences from Europe are publicly available, but most of these represent populations of developed countries of Europe. The uneven distribution of the available data is further impaired by the lack of data sharing. Recent whole-genome studies in Eastern Europe, one in Ukraine and one in Russia, demonstrated that local genome diversity and population structure from Eastern Europe historically had not been fully represented. An unexpected wealth of genomic variation uncovered in these studies was not so …

Pre-Eruptive Excess Volatiles And Their Relationship To Effusive And Explosive Eruption Styles In Semi-Plugged Volcanoes, Sri Budhi Utami, Juan Andùjar, Fidel Costa, Bruno Scaillet, Hanik Humaida, Simon Carn Sep 2022

Pre-Eruptive Excess Volatiles And Their Relationship To Effusive And Explosive Eruption Styles In Semi-Plugged Volcanoes, Sri Budhi Utami, Juan Andùjar, Fidel Costa, Bruno Scaillet, Hanik Humaida, Simon Carn

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Understanding the role of various factors influencing eruption style is challenging, but it can aid in adapting different hazard mitigations and crisis responses for explosive or effusive events. Here, we focus on the role of magma storage conditions in controlling eruption styles at basaltic andesite volcanoes, and how they can be related to monitoring data. We study the cycle of explosive (1990, sub-Plinian) → effusive (2007, dome) → explosive (2014, sub-Plinian) eruptions from Kelud (Kelut) volcano, Indonesia. We conducted petrological analyses of the eruption products and phase equilibria experiments using pumice and explored a range of temperatures, pressures, oxygen fugacity, …

Tell Me All About It: Narrated Memories Are Less Emotional Than Imagined Memories, Jackie Andrade, Tom Ijdema, N Vadazs, Jon May

School of Psychology

Background and Objectives: People often re-live memories by talking about them. Verbal thinking is usually less emotive than imagery-based thinking but it is not known if this finding generalises to recollection. We tested if narrating memories aloud reduces their affective charge compared with recollecting them using imagery. Methods: Participants were randomized to two conditions: imagery (recalling the memory silently as vividly as possible) or narration (describing the memory out loud as clearly as possible). After practicing with a neutral topic, they recalled three aversive (experiments 1 and 2) or three happy (experiment 3) memories using narration or imagery, and rated …

Designing Optimal Convolutional Neural Network Architecture Using Differential Evolution Algorithm, Arjun Ghosh, Nanda Dulal Jana, Saurav Mallik, Zhongming Zhao Sep 2022

Designing Optimal Convolutional Neural Network Architecture Using Differential Evolution Algorithm, Arjun Ghosh, Nanda Dulal Jana, Saurav Mallik, Zhongming Zhao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are deep learning models used widely for solving various tasks like computer vision and speech recognition. CNNs are developed manually based on problem-specific domain knowledge and tricky settings, which are laborious, time consuming, and challenging. To solve these, our study develops an improved differential evolution of convolutional neural network (IDECNN) algorithm to design CNN layer architectures for image classification. Variable-length encoding is utilized to represent the flexible layer architecture of a CNN model in IDECNN. An efficient heuristic mechanism is proposed in IDECNN to evolve CNN architecture through mutation and crossover to prevent premature convergence during …

Many transcription factors regulating the production, survival, and function of photoreceptor cells have been identified, but little is known about transcriptional co-regulators in retinal health and disease. Here, we show that BCL6 co-repressor (BCOR), a Polycomb repressive complex 1 factor mutated in various cancers, is involved in photoreceptor degenerative diseases. Using proteomics and transcription assays, we report that BCOR interacts with the transcription factors CRX and OTX2 and reduces their ability to activate the promoters of photoreceptor-specific genes. CUT&RUN sequencing further shows that BCOR shares genome-wide binding profiles with CRX/OTX2, consistent with a general co-repression activity. We also identify missense …

India’S Economy At 75 : Part Ii, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

India’s success factors may be many but three salient features need emphasis. First, Indian entrepreneurs are dynamic, vibrant and innovative. They even used the socialist economy regime of control and license raj for ‘learning by doing’. Just to give an example, India had a ramshackle automobile industry dominated by two outdated models until the 1990s. The suppliers, engineers, vendors, parts manufacturers did acquire the techniques of supply chain management, production and distribution under most adverse circumstances. When the economy did open up in the post-1991 period and the private sector allowed to set up manufacturing industries without prior approvals, among …

Improving Ideation Of User Actions Using A Novel Ideation Method, Thomas L. Ashworth Sep 2022

Improving Ideation Of User Actions Using A Novel Ideation Method, Thomas L. Ashworth

Theses and Dissertations

During early stages of the design process, ideation methods are used to generate a set of potential solutions based on a particular need. Solutions to design problems generally require both technology and user actions (or tactics) of some sort, although solution ideas may omit explicit mention of either technology or tactics. Previous research suggests that an explicit consideration of tactics in early-stage ideation enables design teams to improve the quantity, quality, variety, and novelty of their idea sets. In this paper, a novel ideation method known as the Random Prompts method is presented, and its performance is evaluated against a …

Active And Passive Immunization With An Anti-Methamphetamine Vaccine Attenuates The Behavioral And Cardiovascular Effects Of Methamphetamine, Colin N. Haile, Kurt J. Varner, Xia Huijing, Reetakshi Arora, Frank M. Orson, Thomas R. Kosten, Therese A. Kosten Sep 2022

Active And Passive Immunization With An Anti-Methamphetamine Vaccine Attenuates The Behavioral And Cardiovascular Effects Of Methamphetamine, Colin N. Haile, Kurt J. Varner, Xia Huijing, Reetakshi Arora, Frank M. Orson, Thomas R. Kosten, Therese A. Kosten

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Background: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is a growing health concern with no FDA-approved treatment. The present series of studies build upon our previous work developing an anti-methamphetamine (MA) vaccine for MUD. We determined the effects of a formulation that included tetanus-toxoid (TT) conjugated to succinyl-methamphetamine (TT-SMA) adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide (alum) in combination with the novel Toll-Like Receptor-5 agonist, entolimod. Methods: Mice were vaccinated (0, 3, 6 weeks) with TT-SMA+alum and various doses of entolimod to determine an optimal dose for enhancing immunogenicity against MA. Functional effects were then assessed using MA-induced locomotor activation in mice. Experiments using passive immunization …
