United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Discovery of hidden geothermal resources is challenging. It requires the mining of large datasets with diverse data attributes representing subsurface hydrogeological and geothermal conditions. The commonly used play fairway analysis approach typically incorporates subject-matter expertise to analyze regional data to estimate geothermal characteristics and favorability. We demonstrate an alternative approach based on machine learning (ML) to process a geothermal dataset from southwest New Mexico (SWNM). The study region includes low- and medium-temperature hydrothermal systems. Several of these systems are not well characterized because of insufficient existing data and limited past explorative work. This study discovers hidden patterns and relations in …

Neural Net Detection Of Seismic Features Related To Gas Hydrates And Free Gas Accumulations On The Northern U.S. Atlantic Margin, Urmi Majumdar, Nathaniel C. Miller, Carolyn D. Ruppel Sep 2022

Neural Net Detection Of Seismic Features Related To Gas Hydrates And Free Gas Accumulations On The Northern U.S. Atlantic Margin, Urmi Majumdar, Nathaniel C. Miller, Carolyn D. Ruppel

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Bottom-simulating reflections (BSRs) that sometimes mark the base of the gas hydrate stability zone in marine sediments are often identified based on the reverse polarity reflections that cut across stratigraphic layering in seismic amplitude data. On the northern U.S. Atlantic margin (USAM) between Cape Hatteras and Hudson Canyon, legacy seismic data have revealed pronounced BSRs south of the deepwater extension of Hudson Canyon and more subtle ones from offshore Delaware south to Cape Hatteras, where the reflections sometimes follow stratigraphic layering. Using high-resolution seismic data acquired during the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Resource Imaging Experiment and a supervised neural net, we identify …

A Numerical Reassessment Of The Gulf Of Mexico Carbon System In Connection With The Mississippi River And Global Ocean, Le Zhang, Z. George Xue Sep 2022

A Numerical Reassessment Of The Gulf Of Mexico Carbon System In Connection With The Mississippi River And Global Ocean, Le Zhang, Z. George Xue

Faculty Publications

Coupled physical-biogeochemical models can fill the spatial and temporal gap in ocean carbon observations. Challenges of applying a coupled physical-biogeochemical model in the regional ocean include the reasonable prescription of carbon model boundary conditions, lack of in situ observations, and the oversimplification of certain biogeochemical processes. In this study, we applied a coupled physical-biogeochemical model (Regional Ocean Modelling System, ROMS) to the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and achieved an unprecedented 20-year high-resolution (5 km, 1/22°) hindcast covering the period of 2000 to 2019. The biogeochemical model incorporated the dynamics of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pools and the formation and dissolution …

Intellectual Pollution And Its Impact On The Criminal Phenomenon, Oday Tulfah Mohammed Aldoury Sep 2022

Intellectual Pollution And Its Impact On The Criminal Phenomenon, Oday Tulfah Mohammed Aldoury

Sultan Qaboos University Legal Studies Journal

Intellectual pollution is dangerous for societies as it distorts their members' principles, values, ideas, and beliefs which negatively influences their behavior, undermines society's cohesion, and increases the qualitative and quantitative motives of the criminal phenomenon. Thus, this research addresses the issue of intellectual pollution and its impact on crime using an inductive and analytical approach. The paper discusses the topic in two sections; the first is the nature of intellectual pollution, and the second is its effects on the criminal phenomenon. This paper obtained significant conclusions, one of which was intellectual pollution is every extraneous thought, belief, or tendency to …

Network Slicing Based On Real-Time Traffic Classification In Software Defined Network (Sdn) Using Machine Learning, Aya A. El-Serwy, Eman Abdelhalim, Mohamed A. Mohamed Sep 2022

Network Slicing Based On Real-Time Traffic Classification In Software Defined Network (Sdn) Using Machine Learning, Aya A. El-Serwy, Eman Abdelhalim, Mohamed A. Mohamed

Mansoura Engineering Journal

With the increase in smart devices, performance of traditional networks is limited by this huge amount of generated traffic flows. A scalable and programmable networking solution can be achieved in software defined networks (SDNs) through the separation between the control plane and the data plane. This advantage can allow machine learning (ML) applications to control and automate networks. Concurrently, network slicing (NS) is a promising technology. It is necessary to meet the variety of service needs and requirements. It provides the network as a service (Naas). So, combining NS and ML in SDNs can achieve good network resources management. This …

Low Temperature Dielectric Strength Of Polyimide-Silica Nanocomposites For Applications In High-Temperature Superconducting Cables, Michael John Mccaffrey Sep 2022

Low Temperature Dielectric Strength Of Polyimide-Silica Nanocomposites For Applications In High-Temperature Superconducting Cables, Michael John Mccaffrey

Theses and Dissertations

Gaseous helium is often considered as an alternative to liquid nitrogen to cool modern high-temperature superconducting cables in support of increased power capacity and/or reduction of required cable size. However, the small size of helium molecules and relatively poor dielectric strength of helium gas create challenges which limit the usefulness of modern cable dielectrics. Continuous dielectric coatings have been considered as an alternative to traditional lapped tape dielectrics to support gaseous helium refrigerants, but unmatched thermal contraction between the coating and cable components would induce failures due to mechanical stress. Composite materials have been considered as a means of matching …
