Altruism And The Dark Triad, Cassidy Trahair, Kristi B. Macdonald, Adrian Furnham, Julie Aitken Schermer
Management and Organizational Studies Publications
Background: The Dark Triad literature examining pro-social behaviours is minimal, with mixed results. Participants and procedure: This study investigates the relationships between the Dark Triad and altruistic behaviours based on self-report data from 286 adults. Altruism was assessed using two scales: a general measure as well as a more recent scale measur-ing compassionate altruism towards family, friends, and strangers. Results: Machiavellianism negatively correlated with general altruism; however, when controlling for the other dark variables plus age and gender in a regression, narcissism was the only Dark Triad trait that significantly predicted altruism. None of the Dark Triad traits were significantly …

One of the global problems is environmental pollution by different biowaste. To solve the problem, biowaste must be recycled. Waste-free technology is also a way of saving exhaustible raw materials. Research on electrochemical energy sources is currently the most dynamically developing area of off-grid energy. Electrochemical capacitors can operate for a long time without changing performance, they have smaller dimensions, high mechanical strength, and a wide operating temperature range. These properties are effective energy-saving devices. Therefore, supercapacitors are widely used in various industries. This review discussed the methods of obtaining and the characteristics of biowaste-derived activated carbon and carbon–manganese oxide …

Assessment Of Skeletal Changes And Mandibular Plane In Growing Patients Treated With Miniscrew Assisted (Marpe) And Conventional Rapid Palatal Expansion Using Cbct Images, Daniel Voorhees, Jonas Bianchi, Heesoo Oh
Orthodontics and Endodontics Theses
Background: Maxillary expansion has long been used in children and adolescents for transverse discrepancies and dental crowding. With age, the mid-palatal suture becomes increasingly mature, requiring heavy, rapid force in order to achieve skeletal expansion. As an individual grows into adulthood, it has been demonstrated that a skeletally anchored expander can be used in order to achieve successful sutural separation. The side effects between these two types of expanders, including dental tipping with relative extrusion of buccal segments and clockwise mandibular rotation, have been demonstrated to have differences in their degrees of severity. However, most of the studies have evaluated …

From Post-Pantheism To Trans-Materialism: D. T. Suzuki And New Buddhism, James Mark Shields
Faculty Contributions to Books
In modern Western thought, pantheism remains a powerful if controversial undercurrent. Recent re-evaluations of the work of Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) point to pantheism’s radical implications for metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and politics. Pantheism (Jp. hanshinron 汎神論) also has significant valence within Japanese Buddhist modernism, particularly in the work of scholars and lay activists who articulated the outlines of a New Buddhism (shin bukkyō 新仏教) from the 1880s through the 1940s. For these thinkers, pantheism provided a “middle way” between materialism and idealism, as well as between theism and atheism. In the postwar period, lapsed radical turned Buddhist Sano Manabu …

Jurnal Penyakit Dalam Indonesia
Hemangioma is the most common congenital benign liver tumor. It affects mostly female, with the incidence of 0.4- 20%. Giant liver hemangioma induce the Kasabach Merritt syndome, a life threathening coagulation disorder which occur due to consumptive coagulopathy: trombocyte sequestration and agregation inside the hemangioma. The mortality rate is around 60%, with the most common cause is multiorgan complication which may end up with sepsis. The core management is hemangioma decompression by surgical measure. However, this often considered as a very risky procedure leading to massive bleeding. In most cases, conservative treatment is the preferred option. It is important to …

A Paraventricular Thalamo-Accumbal Circuit Necessary For Behavioral Inhibition Is Dysfunctional During Opioid Use And Dependence, Kelsey M. Vollmer
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Suppression of dangerous or inappropriate reward-motivated behaviors is critical for survival, whereas therapeutic or recreational opioid use can unleash detrimental behaviors and opioid use disorder (OUD). Nevertheless, the neuronal systems that suppress maladaptive motivated behaviors remain unclear, and whether opioids disengage those systems is unknown. Here, we investigate the posterior paraventricular thalamus (pPVT) as a behavioral mediator due to its strong connectivity with brain structures important for reward processing, such as the nucleus accumbens (NAc). We and others have found pPVT-NAc neuronal activity is inhibited during reward seeking, but activated when such behaviors would be inappropriate, such as during stress …

Corporate Tax Avoidance and Fraud Risk
There is mixed evidence on whether corporate tax avoidance (CTA) is positively or negatively related to aggressive financial reporting. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) requires that auditors assess fraud risks that are related to aggressive financial reporting. In this study I extend the research of CTA by examining the relationship between CTA and fraud risk. I use accrual quality related variables, performance variables, and non-financial measures (NFMs) to measure fraud risk. Drawing on agency theory and fraud risk triangle theory, I find that CTA is positively related to fraud risk. However, I …

It has long been recognized in Europe and elsewhere that standards-development organizations (SDOs) may adopt policies that require their participants to license patents essential to the SDO’s standards (standards-essential patents or SEPs) to manufacturers of standardized products (“implementers”) on a royalty-free (RF) basis. This requirement contrasts with SDO policies that permit SEP holders to charge implementers monetary patent royalties, sometimes on terms that are specified as “fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory” (FRAND). As demonstrated by two decades of intensive litigation around the world, FRAND royalties have given rise to intractable disputes regarding the manner in which such royalties should be calculated …
