Physics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Galaxy clusters have the potential to accelerate cosmic rays (CRs) to ultrahigh energies via accretion shocks or embedded CR acceleration sites. The CRs with energies below the Hillas condition will be confined within the cluster and eventually interact with the intracluster medium gas to produce secondary neutrinos and gamma rays. Using 9.5 yr of muon neutrino track events from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we report the results of a stacking analysis of 1094 galaxy clusters with masses ≳1014 Me and redshifts between 0.01 and ∼1 detected by the Planck mission via the Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect. We find no evidence for significant …

Guidelines For Fabricating Highly Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells With Cu2o As The Hole Transport Material, Sajid Sajid, Salem Alzahmi, Imen Ben Salem, Ihab M. Obaidat

All Works

Organic hole transport materials (HTMs) have been frequently used to achieve high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in regular perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, organic HTMs or their ingredients are costly and time-consuming to manufacture. Therefore, one of the hottest research topics in this area has been the quest for an efficient and economical inorganic HTM in PSCs. To promote efficient charge extraction and, hence, improve overall efficiency, it is crucial to look into the desirable properties of inorganic HTMs. In this context, a simulation investigation using a solar cell capacitance simulator (SCAPS) was carried out on the performance of regular …

All Works

In this paper, a machine learning-based system for the prediction of the required level of respiratory support in COVID-19 patients is proposed. The level of respiratory support is divided into three classes: class 0 which refers to minimal support, class 1 which refers to non-invasive support, and class 2 which refers to invasive support. A two-stage classification system is built. First, the classification between class 0 and others is performed. Then, the classification between class 1 and class 2 is performed. The system is built using a dataset collected retrospectively from 3491 patients admitted to tertiary care hospitals at the …

Covid-19 And The College Student Experience, Benjamin Cochran Oct 2022

Covid-19 And The College Student Experience, Benjamin Cochran

Senior Theses

In March of 2020, COVID-19 consumed the globe, affecting individuals’ physical and mental health. Physical health disparities among states of different political affiliations became clearer as the pandemic continued unrelentingly, but mental health disparities were not. This thesis attempted to note any mental health disparities among college students in states of both political affiliations across the country through an online survey. The 23-question survey was completed by 97 undergraduates at six universities - three in liberal states and three in conservative states. Respondents at universities in the liberal states rated their university and the state in which it is located …

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, How Should We Read: Applying Principles Of Literacy Development To Shared Book-Reading Experiences, Kalika Melody Burnett Bridwell Oct 2022

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, How Should We Read: Applying Principles Of Literacy Development To Shared Book-Reading Experiences, Kalika Melody Burnett Bridwell

Senior Theses

Literacy has long been recognized as critical to success in and out of the classroom (Duchouquette, 2014; Hernandez, 2011; National Center for Family Literacy, 2008), having significant impact on students’ ability to achieve positive outcomes in academic, professional, social, and personal domains. Research suggests that this correlation is established at an early age (Cunningham & Zibulsky, 2011, Storch & Whitehurst, 2002, National Center for Family Literacy, 2008), giving urgency to the provision of high-quality early literacy education and to the identification of best practices in this area. Outside of explicit teaching, one of the most popular of these practices is …

Extensions Of Discrete Choice Experiment Theory For Public Health, Farahnaz Islam Oct 2022

Extensions Of Discrete Choice Experiment Theory For Public Health, Farahnaz Islam

Theses and Dissertations

A discrete choice experiment (DCE) allows researchers to understand how individuals value characteristics of a product or service in hypothetical scenarios and the trade-offs these individuals are willing to make between these characteristics. DCEs quickly gained traction in public health but as more researchers utilized DCEs in broader contexts, several methodological questions have arisen. This dissertation addresses some of these gaps in the literature.

One critique of DCEs is whether individuals would make the same choice in reality as they claimed they would have made in the hypothetical scenario. Perhaps the most efficient way to evaluate the predictive value of …

Thermodynamic Assessment Of Chromium Corrosion In The Na-K-Mg-U(Iii, Iv) Chloride Salt, Jacob Allen Yingling Oct 2022

Thermodynamic Assessment Of Chromium Corrosion In The Na-K-Mg-U(Iii, Iv) Chloride Salt, Jacob Allen Yingling

Theses and Dissertations

Thermodynamic descriptions of high-order molten chloride salt systems are essential for the development of fast molten salt reactor (MSR) technologies. However, a complete thermodynamic assessment of the essential Na-K-Mg-U(III)-U(IV) molten chloride salt with the most prevalent CrCl2 corrosion product has yet to be provided. This is remedied in the present work through application of the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) approach to the available thermodynamic data and new measurements that include differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) observations for previously unexplored two and three component chloride salt systems. Through these efforts, a unique approach was developed for the quantification of uncertainty in …

Cyclic Response And Liquidfaction Behavior Of Gravelly Soils, Pitak Ruttithivaphanich Oct 2022

Cyclic Response And Liquidfaction Behavior Of Gravelly Soils, Pitak Ruttithivaphanich

Theses and Dissertations

Cyclic response and liquefaction behavior are soil mechanisms under earthquake conditions. The study of dynamic soil response is important to evaluate soil behaviors under dynamic loading for a wide range of strains. Soil liquefaction phenomena involving a significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of saturated cohesionless soils has caused catastrophic ground failure in numerous earthquakes. Liquefaction mostly occurs in sand, but liquefaction of gravelly soil has been observed. To date, only a few studies have focused on the liquefaction of gravelly soils; hence, research data is limited. This research aims to improve the understanding of cyclic response and liquefaction …

A Comparative Study Of The Impact Of Regimes In Latin America’S Education Systems: The Cases Of Mercosur, Alba-Tcp, And Pa, Victoria Desimoni Oct 2022

A Comparative Study Of The Impact Of Regimes In Latin America’S Education Systems: The Cases Of Mercosur, Alba-Tcp, And Pa, Victoria Desimoni

Master's Theses

This thesis presents a comparative study of the regional education policies and programs in three Latin American (LA) regional entities (hereafter ‘regimes’ and ‘regionalisms’): The Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), and Pacific Alliance (PA). Each of these represents different regionalisms coexisting in LA (hegemonic, post-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic regionalisms), which makes them ideal for comparative analysis. This project aims to compare these very diverse regimes to interrogate the similarities and dissimilarities, as well as discover who (the regional or the global) is shaping education systems in this area …

Connecting School Climate And Trust: A Content Analysis Of Elements Of Trust In Student And Staff School Climate Surveys, Katherine Thyen Oct 2022

Connecting School Climate And Trust: A Content Analysis Of Elements Of Trust In Student And Staff School Climate Surveys, Katherine Thyen

Master's Theses

This study aims to make a concrete connection between trust in schools and school climate. Research indicates that both trust and school climate can positively impact school experiences and performance for teachers and students, but no formal connection has been made between these two elements of schools. In order to answer this study’s research questions of “What differences in frequency and context of trust dimensions exist between student surveys and teacher surveys?” and “How are survey items related to trust dispersed across school climate domains?”, a directed qualitative content analysis was performed. School climate surveys administered to students and teachers …

Cataloging And Engineering Temperate Coliphages Of The Human Urinary Microbiome, Elias Crum Oct 2022

Cataloging And Engineering Temperate Coliphages Of The Human Urinary Microbiome, Elias Crum

Master's Theses

In the US, around 60% of females will be diagnosed with a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in their lifetime, and Escherichia coli is the most implicated etiological agent in UTIs. Despite its frequent association with lower urinary tract symptoms, recent studies have found that the urinary microbiome (UMB), the viral, bacterial, and fungal resident members of the urinary tract, of healthy females can also consist of E. coli. While most research has focused on the bacterial constituents of the UMB, bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, are far more abundant. Bacteriophages (phages) of other human microbiomes have been shown to play …

Constructing Planetary Citizens Through Ecopedagogy In U.S. Social Studies Standards, Madeline Anne Rainey Oct 2022

Constructing Planetary Citizens Through Ecopedagogy In U.S. Social Studies Standards, Madeline Anne Rainey

Master's Theses

The world is in the age of the Anthropocene, where humans are impacting the environment to disastrous effects. The capitalist economy, promoting neoliberal policies of mass consumption, has exacerbated the world's environmental deterioration and social inequity. The rights and responsibilities people hold have been rapidly changing with the fourth industrial revolution. Globalization and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) have further expanded notions of citizenship. While there have been numerous attempts to bring the environment into schools, it has not emphasized what this crisis deserves. Ecopedagogy, as a critical theory, explicitly examines the interplay between environmental and social problems and challenges …

Institutionalism, Peer Culture, And Cultural Reproduction In Active Shooter Drills, Lillian Wynne Platten Oct 2022

Institutionalism, Peer Culture, And Cultural Reproduction In Active Shooter Drills, Lillian Wynne Platten

Master's Theses

Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland: these are words that represent moments in history where schools should have become unprecedented sites of tragedy and isolated events. Except Columbine occurred in 1999, Sandy Hook in 2012, and Parkland in 2016, making them almost commonplace alongside hundreds of other mass shootings in the US. In place of gun regulation, schools are mandated to conduct active shooter drills, which mimic actual shootings through simulated events including the use of rubber bullets and masked actors to produce visceral reactions. Research has shown that these drills have produced trauma and desensitization among teachers, administrators, and counselors; but …

Interplay Between Human Microbiota And Celiac Disease, John James Colgan Oct 2022

Interplay Between Human Microbiota And Celiac Disease, John James Colgan

Master's Theses

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine in which gluten, an energy-storage protein in wheat and other cereals, elicits an immune response leading to villous atrophy. Despite a strong genetic component, the disease arises sporadically over the lifetime leading us to hypothesize the microbiome might be a trigger. Here, we re-examined 16S data from 3 prior studies examining celiac disease and the microbiome with newer computational tools: the dada2 and PICRUSt 2 pipelines. Our results both confirmed findings of previous studies and generated new data regarding the celiac microbiome of India and Mexico. The datasets were also …
