In mammals, trait variation is often reported to be greater among males than females. However, to date, mainly only morphological traits have been studied. Energy expenditure represents the metabolic costs of multiple physical, physiological, and behavioral traits. Energy expenditure could exhibit particularly high greater male variation through a cumulative effect if those traits mostly exhibit greater male variation, or a lack of greater male variation if many of them do not. Sex differences in energy expenditure variation have been little explored. We analyzed a large database on energy expenditure in adult humans (1494 males and 3108 females) to investigate whether …
Celebrity Politics In The American South: The Case Of Ben “Cooter” Jones, Richard T. Longoria
Celebrity Politics In The American South: The Case Of Ben “Cooter” Jones, Richard T. Longoria
Political Science Faculty Publications
Celebrities get involved in American politics as activists and candidates for office. The literature suggests that celebrities have many advantages over traditional political candidates. However, the case of Ben Jones, “Cooter” from The Dukes of Hazzard, suggests that fame is not enough to win elections. The political environment is the decisive factor in determining whether a celebrity candidate wins or loses an election. The South’s realignment from Democrat to Republican made it difficult for Democrat Ben Jones to succeed in a changing South. Like other celebrities that lost the fundraising battle Jones lost several bids for office. Celebrities, like Fred …

Mda At Your Service: What Is The Recommendation Regarding Prescribing Clindamycin?, Eric Tye Dds, Angela Kanazeh Ms, Cmp
The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association
The MDA at Your Service Column addresses member resources available from the MDA. This month presents guidance in prescribing practices, particularly regarding clindamycin. Clindamycin’s association with an increased risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea, including Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, has increased. The report highlights how to access an ADA clinical guideline, its preference for azithromycin over clindamycin, and the warning associated with prescribing clindamycin. Further reference is available in the August 2020 MDA Journal article "Antibiotic Guidelines for Dentistry: Who, When, What, Why and How to Prescribe,” by Elaine Bailey, PharmD, and Marie Fluent, DDS. Background: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in childhood. However, classical antiepileptic drugs are linked with drug toxicity and cognitive function impairment in children. Hence, it is essential to develop a novel therapy to solve this problem. Currently, studies indicate regulating the nuclear factor-erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-mediated ferroptosis pathway represents a potential advanced therapy for seizures. Hence, the present study aimed to explore whether quercetin, a natural polyphenol, could alleviate seizure-induced neuron death and preserve cognitive function by inhibiting Nrf2-mediated ferroptosis.
Methods: Kainic acid-induced epileptic mice model, morris water maze (MWM) test, cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) …
A Mesh-Free Method Using Piecewise Deep Neural Network For Elliptic Interface Problems, Cuiyu He, Xiaozhe Hu, Lin Mu
A Mesh-Free Method Using Piecewise Deep Neural Network For Elliptic Interface Problems, Cuiyu He, Xiaozhe Hu, Lin Mu
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
In this paper, we propose a novel mesh-free numerical method for solving the elliptic interface problems based on deep learning. We approximate the solution by the neural networks and, since the solution may change dramatically across the interface, we employ different neural networks for each sub-domain. By reformulating the interface problem as a least-squares problem, we discretize the objective function using mean squared error via sampling and solve the proposed deep least-squares method by standard training algorithms such as stochastic gradient descent. The discretized objective function utilizes only the point-wise information on the sampling points and thus no underlying mesh …

Superficial Solitary Fibrous Tumor Masquerading As A Dermoid Cyst: A Case Report, Michael Foss, Charles Dunn, Etan Marks, Rajiv Nathoo
GME Publications
Background: Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are relatively rare spindle cell neoplasms uncommonly seen in dermatology practice. Initially discovered as a pleural tumor, SFTs have also been found in extra-pleural sites including the skin and soft tissues. When arising within the dermis or subcutis they are termed superficial SFTs, where they often present as solitary, unilateral, slow growing superficial masses. Histologically, they are composed of spindle cells arranged in a "patternless" pattern with hemangiopericytoma-like vessels dispersed throughout. Historically, CD34, CD99 and Bcl-2 immunohistochemical (IHC) stains were used to differentiate SFTs from other spindle cell neoplasms, however these markers are not entirely …
Police Vehicle Searches And Racial Profiling: An Empirical Study, Griffin Edwards, Stephen Rushin
Police Vehicle Searches And Racial Profiling: An Empirical Study, Griffin Edwards, Stephen Rushin
Fordham Law Review
In 1981, the U.S. Supreme Court held in New York v. Belton that police officers could lawfully search virtually anywhere in a vehicle without a warrant after the arrest of any occupant in the vehicle. Then, in 2009, the Court reversed course in Arizona v. Gant, holding that police could only engage in vehicle searches after such arrests in a smaller number of extenuating circumstances. This series of cases became a flash point for the broader debate about the regulation of policing. Law enforcement groups argued that administratively complex rules, like those established in Gant, risk officer safety. …

Sources And Distribution Of Microplastics In The United Arab Emirates, Rana Zeeshan Habib
Sources And Distribution Of Microplastics In The United Arab Emirates, Rana Zeeshan Habib
Dissertations
Microplastics (plastic pieces size) are an emerging environmental contaminant that is ubiquitously present in terrestrial, aquatic and aerial environments. United Arab Emirates (UAE) is categorized among the highest domestic waste producing countries (on per capita basis) in the world. A large portion of waste ends up in the environment and contains macro-, meso- and microplastics. No comprehensive study has been carried out in the UAE to investigate the abundance, sources, distribution and impact of microplastics on its environment. Therefore, a comprehensive study to analyze the sources and distribution of microplastics in the UAE was urgently needed. The objective of the …

Background: Resuming work after stroke is a common goal of working-age adults, yet there are few vocational rehabilitation programs designed to address the unique challenges faced following stroke. The Work intervention was developed to address these gaps. Objective: This paper presents a protocol that outlines the steps that will be undertaken to pilot both the intervention and trial processes for the Work trial. Methods: The Work trial is a 2-arm, prospective, randomized, blinded-assessor study with intention-to-treat analysis. A total of 54 adults of working age who have experienced a stroke <4 months prior will be randomized 1:1 to either (1) an experimental group who will receive a 12-week early vocational intervention (Work intervention) plus usual clinical rehabilitation or (2) a control group who will receive only their usual clinical rehabilitation. Results: Outcomes include study and intervention feasibility and intervention benefit. In addition to evaluating the feasibility of delivering vocational intervention early after stroke, benefit will be assessed by measuring rates of vocational participation and quality-of-life improvements at the 3- and 6-month follow-ups. Process evaluation using data collected during the study, as well as postintervention individual interviews with participants and surveys with trial therapists, will complement quantitative data. Conclusions: The results of the trial will provide details on the feasibility of delivering the Work intervention embedded within the clinical rehabilitation context and inform future trial processes. Pilot data will enable a future definitive trial to determine the clinical effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation when delivered in the early subacute phase of stroke recovery.

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Since 2007, at the Electron Science Research Institute (ESRI) nano-fabrication laboratories, Edith Cowan University, Australia, we have devoted research efforts to the synthesis and characterization of bismuth-containing ferrite-garnet-type thin-film magneto-optic (MO) materials of different compositions. We report on the growth and characteristics of radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtered bismuth-substituted iron-garnet thin films. We study the process parameters associated with the RF magnetron sputter deposition technique and investigate the results of optimizing process parameters. To achieve the best MO properties, we employ a few unique techniques, such as co-sputtered nanocomposite films and all-garnet multilayer structures, as well as the application of …

Combining Security And Reliability Of Critical Infrastructures: The Concept Of Securability, Leandros Maglaras, Helge Janicke, Mohamed Amine Ferrag
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The digital revolution has made people more dependent on ICT technology to perform everyday tasks, whether at home or at work. The systems that support critical aspects of this smart way of living are characterized as critical, and the security level of such systems is higher as compared to others. The definition of the criticality of a system is a rather difficult exercise, and for that reason, we have seen novel cybersecurity regulations to introduce the idea of digital managed services, which include security monitoring, managed network services, or the outsourcing of business processes that are are critical to the …

Most existing tools for measuring sensory patterns of children have been developed in Western countries. These tools are complex and may not be culturally appropriate for other contexts that require specific knowledge in the clinical perspective. The aim of this study was to develop a simplified tool called the Thai Sensory Patterns Assessment (TSPA) tool for children. It is designed for children ages 3–12 years old to be completed by their caregiver. The process of creating the tool consisted of drafting a questionnaire and interpreting the result. Partial psychometrics were completed during item development, content validity of items was assessed …
Exploring The Dynamics Of Primary Epsteinbarr Virus Infection Using A Novel Rabbit, Narendran Reguraman
Exploring The Dynamics Of Primary Epsteinbarr Virus Infection Using A Novel Rabbit, Narendran Reguraman
Dissertations
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a common herpesvirus asymptomatically carried by over 90% of the world population. However, in certain circumstances, the virus can lead to life-threatening diseases. Although the virus was isolated over 55 years ago, several fundamental aspects of the biology of EBV and the mechanism by which this virus induces pathology remain unknown. One major obstacle has been the lack of a suitable small animal model for EBV infection. We have recently shown that healthy rabbits are susceptible to EBV infection, and the virus establishes long-term latent infection typically seen in humans. The main objective of this dissertation …

Our knowledge of the factors that can influence the stock of organic carbon (OC) that is stored in the soil of seagrass meadows is evolving, and several causal effects have been used to explain the variation of stocks observed at local to national scales. To gain a global-scale appreciation of the drivers that cause variation in soil OC stocks, we compiled data on published species-specific traits and OC stocks from monospecific and mixed meadows at multiple geomorphological settings. Species identity was recognized as an influential driver of soil OC stocks, despite their large intraspecific variation. The most important seagrass species …

Children’S Identity Work In Daily Singing-Based Music Classes: A Case Study Of An Australian Boys’ School, Jason Goopy
Children’S Identity Work In Daily Singing-Based Music Classes: A Case Study Of An Australian Boys’ School, Jason Goopy
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Music can be a powerful activity and resource in a child’s ongoing identity construction. Rather than something that people have, musical identities are understood to be something people enact and continually work on. The correlation between musical identities and developing music skills raises serious questions regarding the possibilities and responsibilities for school music education and music teachers to positively contribute to children’s emerging identities. This study investigates how daily singing-based music classes at an Australian boys’ school shape and support children’s identity work. Research was conducted using one-on-one semistructured interviews incorporating a “draw and tell” artifact elicitation technique with seven …

Cholesterol levels have been repeatedly linked to Alzheimer's Disease (AD), suggesting that high levels could be detrimental, but this effect is likely attributed to Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. On the other hand, High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol levels have been associated with reduced brain amyloidosis and improved cognitive function. However, recent findings have suggested that HDL-functionality, which depends upon the HDL-cargo proteins associated with HDL, rather than HDL levels, appears to be the key factor, suggesting a quality over quantity status. Background
Suboptimal health status (SHS) is a reversible stage between health and illness that is characterized by health complaints, low energy, general weakness, and chronic fatigue. The Suboptimal Health Status Questionnaire-25 (SHSQ-25) has been validated in three major populations (African, Asian, and Caucasian) and is internationally recognized as a reliable and robust tool for health estimation in general populations. This study focused on the development of K-SHSQ-25, a Korean version of the SHSQ-25, from its English version.
Methods
The SHSQ-25 was translated from English to Korean according to international guidelines set forth by the World Health Organization (WHO) for health …

Purpose: Toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis is the most common clinical manifestation of an infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii. Up to 50 % of the human population is estimated to be infected with T. gondii; however, the epidemiology of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis has not been widely reported. We sought to estimate the prevalence of toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis in Australia using data that were collected as part of the Busselton Healthy Ageing Study. Design: oss-sectional, community-based, prospective cohort study. Participants: 5020 Australian adults (2264 men and 2756 women; age range, 45–69 years, and median age, 58 years). Methods : Retinal color photographs, centered on …

Objectives: To determine the concurrent validity of player self-reported and independently observed throwing volume. Examine whether sex, playing position, or time to upload self-reported data post training influences the accuracy of self-reported throwing loads. Design: Cross-sectional cohort study.
Methods: A total of 8 female and 18 male elite cricket players participated in the study. Overarm throws from 12 training sessions during the 2020–21 cricket year were observed. Player self-reported throwing volume data were retrieved post training, with the time difference between session completion and self-reported data upload recorded.
Results: A moderate positive correlation was found between self-reported and observed throwing …

Cloud-assisted Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly prevalent used in various fields, such as the healthcare system. While in such a scenario, sensitive data (e.g., personal electronic medical records) can be easily revealed, which incurs potential security challenges. Thus, Symmetric Searchable Encryption (SSE) has been extensively studied due to its capability of supporting efficient search on encrypted data. However, most SSE schemes require the data owner to share the complete key with query users and take malicious cloud servers out of consideration. Seeking to address these limitations, in this paper we propose a Verifiable Privacy-preserving data Search scheme with Limited …

Despite the demonstrated editing capacity in the latent space of a pretrained GAN model, inverting real-world images is stuck in a dilemma that the reconstruction cannot be faithful to the original input. The main reason for this is that the distributions between training and real-world data are misaligned, and because of that, it is unstable of GAN inversion for real image editing. In this paper, we propose a novel GAN prior based editing framework to tackle the out-of-domain inversion problem with a composition-decomposition paradigm. In particular, during the phase of composition, we introduce a differential activation module for detecting semantic …

This article explains how two AI systems have been incorporated into the everyday operations of two Singapore public healthcare nation-wide screening programs. The first example is embedded within the setting of a national level population health screening program for diabetes related eye diseases, targeting the rapidly increasing number of adults in the country with diabetes. In the second example, the AI assisted screening is done shortly after a person is admitted to one of the public hospitals to identify which inpatients—especially which elderly patients with complex conditions—have a high risk of being readmitted as an inpatient multiple times in the …

Deep learning has become a promising programming paradigm in software development, owing to its surprising performance in solving many challenging tasks. Deep neural networks (DNNs) are increasingly being deployed in practice, but are limited on resource-constrained devices owing to their demand for computational power. Quantization has emerged as a promising technique to reduce the size of DNNs with comparable accuracy as their floating-point numbered counterparts. The resulting quantized neural networks (QNNs) can be implemented energy-efficiently. Similar to their floating-point numbered counterparts, quality assurance techniques for QNNs, such as testing and formal verification, are essential but are currently less explored. In …

Information leakage can have dramatic consequences on systems security. Among harmful information leaks, the timing information leakage occurs whenever an attacker successfully deduces confidential internal information. In this work, we consider that the attacker has access (only) to the system execution time. We address the following timed opacity problem: given a timed system, a private location and a final location, synthesize the execution times from the initial location to the final location for which one cannot deduce whether the system went through the private location. We also consider the full timed opacity problem, asking whether the system is opaque for …

While the global healthcare market of wearable devices has been growing signi!cantly in recent years and is predicted to reach $60 billion by 2028, many important healthcare applications such as seizure monitoring, drowsiness detection, etc. have not been deployed due to the limited battery lifetime, slow response rate, and inadequate biosignal quality. This study proposes PROS, an e"cient pattern-driven compressive sensing framework for low-power biopotential-based wearables. PROS eliminates the conventional trade-o# between signal quality, response time, and power consumption by introducing tiny pattern recognition primitives and a pattern-driven compressive sensing technique that exploits the sparsity of biosignals. Specifically, we (i) …
