Impact Of Geographical Diversification And Limited Attention On Private Equity Fund Returns, Victor Hock Keong Ong Oct 2022

Impact Of Geographical Diversification And Limited Attention On Private Equity Fund Returns, Victor Hock Keong Ong

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This study analyzes the effect of geographical diversification on global private equity (PE) fund returns. I find that there is a negative correlation between geographical diversification and PE fund returns. To establish the causality between geographical diversification and PE fund returns, I employ an instrument variable analysis where the instrument used is the stock market capitalization value of the host country where the PE fund is based. My results apply to Net IRR, multiple and DPI as dependent variables used to proxy for PE fund returns in the main regression model. A one standard deviation increase in geographical diversification results …

An Est Approach To Entrepreneurial Exit In Chinese Family Business: A Case Study Of H Company, Lidian Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Previous entrepreneurial exit literature has mostly followed a feature-oriented logic by summarizing the impact of industry and company characteristics and entrepreneurs’ personal traits on entrepreneurial exit decisions, disregarding the decision-making process of entrepreneurial exit and the role of key events in advancing the process. This thesis endeavors to explore the determining factors behind entrepreneurial exit decisions of family businesses and the dynamic decision-making process based on Event System Theory (EST) with a single-case study method and a feature-oriented and process-oriented approach.

This study has conducted an in-depth investigation into Company H, which possesses typical features of Chinese private family businesses. …

Expanding The Idea To Mitigate Disproportionality Of English Language Learners In Special Education, Hannah R. Kramer

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note addresses the disproportionate representation of English Language Learners (ELLs) in special education, arguing that the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is insufficient in addressing their unique linguistic and cultural needs. It advocates for reforms to the IDEA, including enhanced pre-evaluation screening, culturally sensitive assessments, and an expanded definition of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) to ensure ELLs receive appropriate educational support without misclassification.

The End Of Forced Arbitration Of Sexual Violence And The Uncertain Future, Heidi M. S. Sandomir Oct 2022

The End Of Forced Arbitration Of Sexual Violence And The Uncertain Future, Heidi M. S. Sandomir

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that forced arbitration clauses in employment contracts systematically deny justice to survivors of workplace sexual violence by shielding employers from accountability and limiting legal recourse. While the Ending Forced Arbitration of Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment Act (EFAA) represents a step forward by invalidating predispute arbitration agreements for sexual assault and harassment claims, it falls short of fully addressing the issue due to gaps in retroactive application, inconsistent court interpretations, and lack of alignment with Title VII. The note calls for broader legislative reforms to eliminate forced arbitration in all discrimination cases and ensure survivors' access to …

Pirius, Maria Eugenia Guicciardi, Anuradha Krishnan, Nazli Begum Ozturk, Gregory J. Gores, Nicholas F. Larusso, Steven P. O'Hara

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Background: We reported that cholangiocyte senescence is a pathogenic feature of Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) and is regulated by the transcription factor, ETS1. We also showed that Histone 3 Lysine 27 is acetylated at senescence-associated loci. The bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) proteins are epigenetic readers that bind acetylated histones, recruit transcription factors, and drive gene expression. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that BET proteins interact with ETS1 to drive gene expression and promote cholangiocyte senescence. Methods: We performed immunofluorescence to assess cholangiocyte expression of two BET proteins, BRD2 and BRD4, in tissue from PSC patients and PSC mouse models …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Zinc oxide is an environmentally friendly and readily synthesized semiconductor with many industrial applications. ZnO powders were prepared by alkali precipitation using different [Zn(acetate)2(amine)x] compounds to alter the particle size and aspect ratio. Slow precipitations from 95 °C solutions produced micron-scale particles with morphologies of hexagonal plates, rods, and needles, depending on the precursor used. Powders prepared at 65 °C with rapid precipitation yielded particles with minimal morphology differences, but particle size was dependent on the precursor used. The smallest particles were produced using precursors that yielded crystals with low aspect ratios during high-temperature synthesis. Particles …

The Foreign Tax Credit Redux, Bret Wells Oct 2022

The Foreign Tax Credit Redux, Bret Wells

Chapman Law Review

In the preamble to its 2022 final regulations, the Treasury Department provided multiple justifications for its amendments based on the historic policy goals of Section 901 and the manner that judicial case law has construed this provision. Yet, in fact, the amendments made by the 2022 final regulations deviate away from the historic policy goals of the U.S. foreign tax credit without any Congressional authorization for doing so. Moreover, these 2022 final regulations represent a strong repudiation of the Supreme Court’s own articulation of the Biddle doctrine in the PPL decision by attempting to formulate an interpretation of the Biddle …

H-1b Visa Lottery: Random Selection Process Prevents Applicants From Achieving The American Dream, Alexandra Amos

Chapman Law Review

"The American Dream: 'a happy way of living that is thought of by many Americans as something that can be achieved by anyone in the United States especially by working hard and becoming successful.' 2 Hard work. Perseverance. Opportunity. These are words often associated with the concept that anyone who works hard, is driven, and that if one plays by the rules, they can achieve success and stability in America. 3 The original concept of the 'American Dream' was founded in ideals of equality, justice, and democracy. 4 However, many hardworking, driven immigrants would probably disagree with the idea that …

The City-Sin: Collective Responsibility For The Plague In Early Modern London, Andrew Fleck Oct 2022

The City-Sin: Collective Responsibility For The Plague In Early Modern London, Andrew Fleck

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

The epidemic of bubonic plague that struck London in 1603 created its own culture of collectivity. Instead of seeking to place blame on others, the writers responding to the epidemic understood the disease to be divine punishment and a call to collective moral reform. Analyzing the plague pamphlets of Thomas Dekker, William Muggins, Thomas Middleton, and a Dutch refugee residing in London, Jacob Cool, this article argues that the focus on personal moral responsibility for the plague and the need for collective reform created an unexpected culture of collectivity in early modern London.
