This month’s editorial underscores the importance of safeguarding against occupational risks in dentistry. Dr. Smiley shares personal experiences, highlighting potential hazards to oral health care workers' eyes and hearing, including intense lights, noisy equipment, and exposure to infectious pathogens. He emphasizes the need for protective eyewear, light shields, and equipment calibration to reduce eye-related risks and the use of custom musician earplugs to reduce the risk of job-related hearing damage. The overall message stresses that taking steps to protect oneself from occupational risks can preserve the quality of life and a professional career.

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dip coaters provide a compact device that can be used to obtain uniform and consistent coatings on a substrate. This article describes a less costly dip coater design with similar specifications to other dip coaters. The machine consists of a NEMA 23 stepper motor, touch screen display, and acrylic housing to protect the substrate from dust. The machine is programmed using Arduino IDE, allowing for easy changes to be made. The small size of the dip coater makes it ideal for use in labs. The majority of the components require no alterations after purchase, allowing for easy replacements and construction.

Search For Triple-Proton Decay Using Machine Learning With Cuore, Douglas Adams Oct 2022

Search For Triple-Proton Decay Using Machine Learning With Cuore, Douglas Adams

Theses and Dissertations

A framework to search for a triple-proton decay of 130Te in the CUORE detector against a background of muons is presented. We use machine learning to classify different kinds of energy depositing events. We use the classification information to improve our detection or non-detection limits of a triple-proton decay process. We derive and use a methodology of combining Poisson counting statistics with supervised classification machine learning tools. Additionally, a sensitivity calculation is provided which uses the classification counting likelihood. Using our analysis technique, we achieve an lower 2σ half-life bound of 7.43×1024yrs for triple-proton decay of …

Analysis Of Selected Pieces Influenced By Taiwanese Aboriginal Music For Solo Violin And String Quartet, Isabel Hsin-Yi Ong

Theses and Dissertations

This is an analysis of three pieces that contribute to solo violin and string quartet repertoire through the lens of intervallic relationships, rhythmic and gestural motifs, and instrumental technique. Briefly delving into the Aboriginal history of Taiwan and illuminating aural concepts inherent within each tribe, the research blends musicological research, theoretical analysis, and intuitive performance-based interpretations to meld and expand the technical and musical possibilities of the violin with the essence and impact of these songs.

Assessing The Constitutional Validity Of Substantiation Laws For Medical Device Safety And Effectiveness Under The Medical Devices Regulations And The Food And Drugs Act, Victoria Kongats Oct 2022

Assessing The Constitutional Validity Of Substantiation Laws For Medical Device Safety And Effectiveness Under The Medical Devices Regulations And The Food And Drugs Act, Victoria Kongats

LLM Theses

This thesis examines federal scientific evidence requirements for medical device safety and effectiveness under the mainstream market entry licensing pathway under Part 1 of the Medical Devices Regulations, and under the new ‘agile’ market entry pathway, the Advanced Therapeutic Products Amendments, which amended the Food and Drugs Act. Apart from a narrow category of medical devices (near patient in vitro diagnostic devices), scientific evidence requirements are vague and do not enumerate explicit expectations for methodologically rigorous forms of scientific evidence. Medical device safety and effectiveness could be more predictable with explicit expectations for scientific rigour. The thesis analyzes if this …

A Conversation Piece About Implementing Inuit Legal Orders Into The Nunatsiavut Government's Inuit Court, Elizabeth Zarpa Oct 2022

A Conversation Piece About Implementing Inuit Legal Orders Into The Nunatsiavut Government's Inuit Court, Elizabeth Zarpa

LLM Theses

A majority of Inuit reside above the 55th parallel in 51 communities throughout Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, Nunavut and Inuvialuit. This area is Inuit Nunangat and each of these Inuit regions has their own modern treaty. The political and legal history of the evolution of these modern treaties is under-represented within educational institutions. Breathing life into and contextualizing this history is integral when revitalizing Inuit legal orders. There is space to implement Inuit legal orders into the governing structures throughout Inuit Nunangat. This thesis highlights that published and publicly accessible Inuit stories embodies law. Law from the stories is applicable to governance …

Measuring And Assessing The Impact Of Race And Culture Assessments In Sentencing, Alexia Bystrzycki Oct 2022

Measuring And Assessing The Impact Of Race And Culture Assessments In Sentencing, Alexia Bystrzycki

LLM Theses

In recent years, the use of Impact of Race and Culture Assessments (“IRCA”) emerged in sentencing across Canada, especially in Nova Scotia and Ontario. Sentencing judges recognized that IRCAs “have the potential to provide a bridge between an accused’s experience with racial discrimination and the problem of over-incarceration” (R v Jackson, 2018 ONSC 2527). Consequently, IRCAs are helpful in achieving fit and proportional sentences. Using a mixed-methods approach, this thesis seeks to assess the impact of IRCAs on sentencing decisions. First, this thesis examines how judges apply IRCAs in crafting sentences by way of content analysis. Second, this thesis attempts …

The Right To Development And Climate Justice: The Nigerian Approach, Ikeanibe Chiamaka Cynthia Oct 2022

The Right To Development And Climate Justice: The Nigerian Approach, Ikeanibe Chiamaka Cynthia

LLM Theses

The individual concepts of the right to development and climate justice have been the subject of much literature. However, the intersection of both concepts remains an emerging discourse. This thesis considers how the implementation of each of the two independent concepts affects the full actualization of the other. It situates itself within the Nigerian jurisdiction to analyse how the implementation of the right to development hinders the attainment of climate justice and vice versa. It argues that the weak response to climate change has impacted the right of the people to reach optimum development. It further argues that the basic …

The Rise Of Machines: Patenting Inventions Generated By Artificial Intelligence In Canada, Morris Odeh Oct 2022

The Rise Of Machines: Patenting Inventions Generated By Artificial Intelligence In Canada, Morris Odeh

LLM Theses

“The rise of machines is here,” but they did not come as “rogue robots” to terminate humankind as some fictional writers predicted. Rather, they have come as inventors of human-like creativity. Therefore, this thesis examines the question of the patentability of inventions generated by artificial intelligence (AI) machines within the context of the Canadian patent system. Applying the modern principle of statutory interpretation, utilitarianism, and economic theoretical framework, this research determines whether AI-generated inventions can constitute patentable subject matter, AI systems can be inventors, and AI technology can own and exercise patent rights under the Canadian Patent Act. The thesis …

Disabusing The Tax Aid Narrative: What Inter-National Tax Equity Really Means For "Poor" Countries And How To (Re)Frame It, Ogbu Okanga Okanga Oct 2022

Disabusing The Tax Aid Narrative: What Inter-National Tax Equity Really Means For "Poor" Countries And How To (Re)Frame It, Ogbu Okanga Okanga

PhD Dissertations

International tax regimes (e.g., the “double taxation regime”) are created by states with competing tax jurisdiction to coordinate their tax rules and, specifically, to address common efficiency problems like international double taxation. In developing such regimes, states attempt to balance competing tax policy priorities: efficiency, administrability, and equity. This work engages with equity, as a policy norm of international tax (inter-national tax equity). It is my thesis that the framing/articulation of inter-national tax equity suffers from a narrative problem that, perhaps, stems from its apparent conceptual unclarity and multifarious usage. This narrative problem is most evident in the articulation of …

Voices From Below—Africa’S Contribution To The Development Of The Norm Of Corporate Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Akinwumi Olawuyi Ogunranti Oct 2022

Voices From Below—Africa’S Contribution To The Development Of The Norm Of Corporate Responsibility To Respect Human Rights, Akinwumi Olawuyi Ogunranti

PhD Dissertations

The long conversations about corporate responsibility predominantly take place in forums and conferences in the Global North. Yet, the majority of the human rights abuses and their impacts are felt by peasants, farmers, children, and women in local communities in the Global South who do not have a voice in the institutionalized governance systems that animate global affairs. This thesis answers the question of how norms and human rights institutions in Africa can influence the corporate responsibility to respect (CR2R) norm as embedded in pillar II of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Through the theory …

Sustainability, A Priority, Havovi Joshi Oct 2022

Sustainability, A Priority, Havovi Joshi

Asian Management Insights

The word ‘sustainability’ is thrown around liberally these days. But what does it really mean? At its core, sustainability is a business approach to creating long-term value by considering how an organisation operates not only in the economic but also social and ecological environments. Today, consumers across all generations, from baby boomers to Gen Z, are demanding more sustainable purchasing options and environment, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives from the retailers they patronise, putting pressure on businesses to up their sustainability game if they want to stay competitive.

Asia’S Waste Crisis, Havovi Joshi Oct 2022

Asia’S Waste Crisis, Havovi Joshi

Asian Management Insights

Many Asian countries have drawn up national strategies to address waste management through their policy and regulatory frameworks, and put in place policies that promote green growth and sustainable development. However, nations across the continent are at vastly different stages of waste management. On one end, countries like Japan, China, and Singapore are ahead of the curve, and have invested in sound and structured waste management systems. On the other end, less developed nations continue to dispose most of their waste at open dumps.

Validation Of The Child And Adult Social Support Scale (Casss) Which Measures Social Support In The Indonesian Version, Endah Mastuti, Fajrianthi, Fitri Andriani Oct 2022

Validation Of The Child And Adult Social Support Scale (Casss) Which Measures Social Support In The Indonesian Version, Endah Mastuti, Fajrianthi, Fitri Andriani

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

Social support has an important role, so that students in online learning can reduce the various problems they face. Social support here comes from parents, teachers, classmates, close friends, and the school itself as an institution. Based on this, it is necessary to do research related to social support to get an overview of the support from whom students need in online learning. Furthermore, this can be used as input to intervene in the problems faced by students. To conduct this research, it is necessary to have a measuring tool to conduct social support research. One of the comprehensive measuring …

Item Development And Psychometric Assessment Of A Pilots' Well-Being Scale: A Study On Indonesian Commercial Pilots, Patricia Yora Wenas, Angela Oktavia Suryani, Laura Fransisca Sudarnoto

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

Flight success and accidents rely on the pilot's condition. To date, there is no psychometrically tested instrument to measure the psychological well-being of pilots. This study aims to develop items for measuring the well-being of commercial pilots in Indonesia. The constructs, dimensions, and indicators were formulated through literature reviews and interviews with pilots about their well-being. We develop well-being as a state in which a person feels positive, healthy, prosperous, comfortable, and valued in their work, able to control and contribute to the social environment. The instrument conveyed six dimensions, namely (1) positive emotion, (2) health, (3) competence, (4) recognition, …

Introducing The Education Technology Value Evaluation Tool For Schools, Ralph Saubern, Pauline Taylor-Guy, Fabienne Van Der Kleij Oct 2022

Introducing The Education Technology Value Evaluation Tool For Schools, Ralph Saubern, Pauline Taylor-Guy, Fabienne Van Der Kleij

International Conference on Assessment and Learning (ICAL)

Despite the enthusiasm for technology in school education, the importance attributed to it by policymakers, educators, students and parents, and the extensive impact of the changes in practices and provision related to the adoption of digital technologies, research has provided little evidence that the adoption of digital technologies has led to improved outcomes for learners. Given the significant, ongoing investment in technology and research evidence that technology has potential to improve learning outcomes, it is timely for education systems and schools to have access to tools and frameworks that can support effective use of technology in education. This paper introduces …
