Barriers To Mental Health Service Use Among Palestinian-Arab Women In Israel: Psychological Distress As Moderator, Fareeda Abo-Rass, Sarah Abu-Kaf, Ora Nakash

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

Background: Many studies indicate that ethnic minority women, including women from the disadvantaged Palestinian-Arab minority in Israel, experience higher rates of psychological distress but are less likely to use mental health services. This study examined psychological distress and its role as a moderator in the relationship between mental health service use and stigma-related, attitudinal, and instrumental barriers. Method: Cross-sectional study of 146 Palestinian-Arab women who completed measures of psychological distress, mental health service use, the Barriers to Care Evaluation scale, and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Participants who did not utilize mental health services reported higher levels of all barrier types compared …

A Novel Iron Phosphate Cement Derived From Copper Smelting Slag And Its Early Age Hydration Mechanism, Yunlong Luo, Xintao Zhou, Zhongqiu Luo, Hongyan Ma, Yu Wei, Qin Liu

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Copper slag (CS), a by-product of copper smelting, is normally stockpiled, leading to wastes of resource and space as well as environment pollution. It has not been massively reutilized as a supplementary cementitious material in Portland cement due to its low reactivity. In the present study, CS is for the first time utilized as the base component to prepare an iron phosphate cement (IPC) by reacting with ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) at room temperature. The influence of the raw materials mass ratio (CS/ADP) on the microstructure and performance of IPC pastes are investigated. It is found that the compressive strength …

(Dis)Advantages Of Device-Free Experiences: A Qualitative Approach, Sandy Burrill Oct 2022

(Dis)Advantages Of Device-Free Experiences: A Qualitative Approach, Sandy Burrill

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Smartphone use is associated with things like immersion into false realities, worsened mental health, and even addictive tendencies, and reducing usage can produce both negative outcomes like fear of missing out and separation anxiety, as well as positive outcomes like attainment of study goals and reflective states (defined as states wherein behavior relies on forethought and a deliberate examination of options). However, there is a gap in what is known about expectations in anticipation of smartphone use reduction, and the prevalence of quantitative approaches has meant that there is a lack of richer, participant-driven data about device-free experiences. Using qualitative …

Greening Criminal Legal Deserts In Rural Texas, Pamela R. Metzger, Claire Buetow, Kristin Meeks, Blane Skiles, Jiacheng Yu Oct 2022

Greening Criminal Legal Deserts In Rural Texas, Pamela R. Metzger, Claire Buetow, Kristin Meeks, Blane Skiles, Jiacheng Yu

Deason Center Reports

Texas’ rural communities urgently need more prosecutors and public defense providers. On average, Texas’ most urban areas have 28 lawyers for every 100 criminal cases, but rural areas only have five. Many rural prosecutor’s offices cannot recruit and retain enough staff. The Constitution’s promise of equal justice for all remains unfulfilled. Rural Texans charged with misdemeanors are four times less likely to have a lawyer than urban defendants. In 2021, only 403 rural Texas lawyers accepted an appointment to represent an adult criminal defendant. In 65 rural counties, no lawyer accepted an appointment. And the problem is getting worse. Since …

Tax Complexity And Technology, David I. Walker Oct 2022

Tax Complexity And Technology, David I. Walker

Indiana Law Journal

The Federal Income Tax Code has become increasingly complex over time with the implication that many taxpayers no longer understand the connection between their life decisions and their taxes. Some commentators have suggested that increasing computational complexity may be attributable in part to the proliferation of tax preparation software that renders such complexity manageable at filing time, but otherwise does nothing to mitigate the “black box” nature of the tax system. While such complexity and opacity undercut explicit incentives embedded in the Code, make planning more difficult, and undermine political accountability for taxes, they may also reduce the inefficient distortion …

Taming Unicorns, Matthew Wansley Oct 2022

Taming Unicorns, Matthew Wansley

Indiana Law Journal

Until recently, most startups that grew to become valuable businesses chose to become public companies. In the last decade, the number of unicorns—private, venture-backed startups valued over one billion dollars—has increased more than tenfold. Some of these unicorns committed misconduct that they successfully concealed for years. The difficulty of trading private company securities facilitates the concealment of misconduct. The opportunity to profit from trading a company’s securities gives short sellers, analysts, and financial journalists incentives to uncover and reveal information about misconduct the company commits. Securities regulation and standard contract provisions restrict the trading of private company securities, which undermines …

Tokenized: The Law Of Non-Fungible Tokens And Unique Digital Property, Joshua A.T. Fairfield Oct 2022

Tokenized: The Law Of Non-Fungible Tokens And Unique Digital Property, Joshua A.T. Fairfield

Indiana Law Journal

Markets for unique digital property—digital equivalents of rare artworks, collectible trading cards, and other assets that gain value from scarcity—have exploded in the past few years. At root is the next iteration of blockchain technology, unique digital assets called non-fungible tokens. Unlike bitcoin, where one coin is the same as another, NFTs are unique, each with different attributes. An NFT that represented ownership of Boardwalk would be quite different from one that represented Baltic Avenue.

NFTs have grown from a few early breakout successes to a rapidly developing market for unique digital treasures. The attraction to buyers is that, unlike …

Risk Factors Of Early Postoperative Cardiac Arrhythmia After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Single-Center Experience, Rahaf K. Alotaibi, Abdulmuti S. Saleem, Fai F. Alsharef, Zainab A. Alnemer, Yazan M. Saber, Gaser A. Abdelmohsen, Saud A. Bahaidarah Oct 2022

Risk Factors Of Early Postoperative Cardiac Arrhythmia After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: A Single-Center Experience, Rahaf K. Alotaibi, Abdulmuti S. Saleem, Fai F. Alsharef, Zainab A. Alnemer, Yazan M. Saber, Gaser A. Abdelmohsen, Saud A. Bahaidarah

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To evaluate the incidence of arrhythmia in the early postoperative period and to identify its risk factors among pediatric patients following cardiac surgery at King Abdulaziz University Hospital (KAUH), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between 2015-2020. Methods: Out of 1242 patients, a total of 821 aged <18 years who underwent cardiac surgery were included in this retrospective cohort carried out in June 2021 at KAUH, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Information retrieved from the hospital medical records had patients’ demographics, types of arrhythmias, hemodynamic stability, electrolyte disturbances, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), and aortic cross-clamp (AXC) durations. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the possible risk factors associated with postoperative arrhythmia. Results: Of the 821 patients, 140 (17.1%) developed arrhythmia postoperatively. The most common arrhythmias were junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET, 51.4%), atrioventricular block (27.1%), and supraventricular tachycardia (10%). The majority of cases occurred on the first day postoperatively (79.3%). Patients with postoperative arrhythmias had a more prolonged CPB ( p =0.0001) and AXC ( p =0.005) time, electrolytes disturbances ( p =0.021), and hemodynamic instability ( p =0.0001) than other patients. Conclusion: Postoperative arrhythmia, especially JET, is common after pediatric cardiac surgery. Prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass, prolonged aortic cross-clamping, electrolytes disturbances, and hemodynamic instability are possible risk factors for postoperative cardiac arrhythmias.

Saudi Medical Journal

Objectives: To assess the level of infertility-related stress, associated socio-economic, and demographic factors among infertile couples living in Jordan and those living under the chronic Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the occupied Palestinian territories. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in a number of fertility and reproductive clinics in Jordan and occupied Palestinian territories over a period of 6 months. Trained clinical pharmacists interviewed the identified couples. Results: A total of 443 participants were interviewed. Three variables were significantly and independently associated with global stress scores. The need of parenthood appears higher in women than men among infertile couples in Jordan …

Able But Unwilling To Work: Why The Current State Of Workers’ Compensation Law In Mississippi Deters Workers From Returning To Work As Soon As They Are Physically Able, Chandler Sessums

MC Law Review

In 2019, the National Safety Council estimated that the total economic cost of work-related deaths and injuries in the United States was $171,000,000,000 and the amount of workdays lost due to these deaths and injuries was 105,000,000 days.1 On average, for every day of work missed by a worker due to a work-related death or injury, the total economic loss was over $1,600 per worker. Therefore, any time a worker is injured on the job, the overarching goal for both the employer and the employee should be for the worker to return to work as soon as is safely possible …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Objective:  Effective cancer treatment involves aggressive chemo-radiotherapy protocols that alter survivors’ quality of life (QOL). This has recently aroused the attention not only to focus on clinical care but rather to be holistic and client-centered, looking beyond morbidity and mortality. The study assessed the QOL and associated factors among patients with cervical cancer (CC) after the completion of chemoradiotherapy.

Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) from September to November 2020. A total of 323 CC patients were interviewed with a structured questionnaire of QOL, the European Organization for Research and Treatment …
