Beyond Window Dressing: Public Participation For Marginalized Communities In The Datafied Society, Michele E. Gilman Oct 2022

Beyond Window Dressing: Public Participation For Marginalized Communities In The Datafied Society, Michele E. Gilman

All Faculty Scholarship

We live in a datafied society in which our personal data is being constantly harvested, analyzed, and sold by public and private entities, and yet we have little control over our data and little voice in how it is used. In light of the impacts of algorithmic decision-making systems—including those that run on machine learning and artificial intelligence—there are increasing calls to integrate public participation into the adoption, design, and oversight of these tech tools. Stakeholder input is particularly crucial for members of marginalized groups, who bear the disproportionate harms of data-centric technologies. Yet, recent calls for public participation have …

Rewards And Challenges In Adopting Agility In An Academic Department, Massood Towhidnejad, Omar Ochoa, James J. Pembridge, Radu Babiceanu, Carlos Castro

Posters

Introducing agility into department processes may be challenging especially when interfacing with a non-agile environment. While frequent meetings can add more time constraints, the team environment emphasizes more communication, transparency, and accountability in completing the products leading to a higher sense of ownership of the completed work.

A Case Study In Teaching Inclusive Teaching, Zitsi Mirakhur, Christopher Chen, Sarah Schwarz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

As the college student population grows increasingly diverse, there is a need for instructors—including graduate student instructors (GSIs)—to have a set of pedagogical tools that enables them to create inclusive classroom environments, those that consider their students’ identity and provide equal opportunities for learning. However, the literature on how to support GSIs develop these skills is still nascent. In this article, we report on two strategies—one diffuse and one direct—we used while training GSIs and the ways in which they changed GSIs’ understanding of what inclusive teaching entails. We find that our direct model might have increased GSIs’ awareness of …

Megasotl: Supporting Pedagogical Research Across Multiple Institutions, Sara Nasrollahian Mojarad, Laura Cruz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

MegaSoTL projects are scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) projects that generate evidence of learning from multiple institutions. While being increasingly practiced, MegaSoTL projects and their potential contribution to improve higher education pedagogy remain understudied in higher education literature. In this article, we introduce Transparency in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (TILT) and ManyClasses projects as two MegaSoTL case studies, and we describe their research goals, processes, and administration. We then discuss the potentials and challenges of MegaSoTL projects for educational developers to promote SoTL at micro and mega levels. The article concludes with recommendations to develop a collaborative …

Fellow Travelers: Taking Stock Of Faculty Fellows Programs In The Age Of Organizational Development, Susan A. Colby, Laura Cruz, Danielle Cordaro, Clare Cruz

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Faculty fellows have long served as a staple of centers for teaching and learning (CTLs), but to date little to no evidence has been gathered regarding their broader impact. The current study provides a snapshot of U.S.-based faculty fellows programs today, based on a comprehensive review of CTL websites. We categorize faculty fellows programs across five modalities that reflect decades of evolution and adaptation in the field of educational development. Our findings are intended to provide the foundation for new pathways of research, practice, and inquiry regarding the implementation of CTL fellowship programs.

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations

Aims and objective(s)

The objective of this systematic review was to determine the needle length required to reach the dorsogluteal muscle based on body mass index and sex. Our aim was to provide evidence-based recommendations to current intramuscular injection guidelines from the result(s) of this review.

Background

Studies worldwide are documenting reduced medication effectiveness due to improperly placed dorsogluteal intramuscular injections because of incorrect needle length, wrong site selection and/or obesity. Current intramuscular injection guidelines lack specific instructions according to weight or sex. While there are similar concerns with other injectable sites, this review focuses solely on adult dorsogluteal intramuscular …

Is Digitization Enough?: Evaluating The Effects Of Digitization On Researcher Engagement With A Photographic Collection At An Academic Archive, Katherine E. Conley

Museum Studies Theses

The topic of collection digitization at academic archives have been of particular interest to archivists over the last decade. In today’s increasingly digital world, expectations for accessible online content have outpaced the efforts of academic archives to meet the demands of online researchers. It has become obvious that for academic archives and their photographic collections to reach desired audiences and maintain academic impact, archivists and their institutions must redirect their focus to producing accessible digitized content. However, recent research in library sciences and museum studies reveals that digitization alone is not enough. Various efforts must be made in conjunction with …

Surgery Meeting Abstracts

Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze whether left subclavian artery (LSA) revascularization in patients undergoing thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for acute type B aortic dissection (TBAD) is associated with decreased spinal cord ischemia (SCI).

Methods: The national Vascular Quality Initiative TEVAR module was queried for all procedures performed between 2014 and 2021. Patients presenting with aortic aneurysms or aortic ruptures were excluded from the analysis. Patients with therapeutic spinal drains were excluded as well. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether their left subclavian artery (LSA) was revascularized (prior to or during TEVAR) or …

Special Issue Introduction: Writing Infrastructure, Sarah Read, Jordan Frith Oct 2022

Special Issue Introduction: Writing Infrastructure, Sarah Read, Jordan Frith

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article is the introduction to the second of two Communication and Design Quarterly special issues focused on conceptualizations of infrastructure. While there are more continuities than differences between the themes and methodologies of articles in the first and second issues, this second issue leans towards articles that have taken up infrastructure as it pertains to writing and rhetoric. This introduction frames the value of infrastructure as a metaphor for making visible how writing and rhetoric structure and enact much of our world, especially for writing pedagogy. In addition, this article concludes by introducing the six contributions in this issue.

Meeting The Next Generation: A Cross-Campus Collaboration Via A Scholarship Workshop, Lora Winters, Ruth Monnier Oct 2022

Meeting The Next Generation: A Cross-Campus Collaboration Via A Scholarship Workshop, Lora Winters, Ruth Monnier

Faculty Submissions

Reaching high school students before they set foot on campus would allow writing centers to increase awareness of services while also making personal connections to students, which has been proven to increase student retention. Targeting these students can be difficult and expensive, but our writing center collaborated with library services and our admissions office to create a program about finding scholarship opportunities/writing scholarship essays that was inexpensive, targeted local high schools, and initial results indicate that this program is beneficial to our university’s recruitment efforts. We will discuss our findings and how this program could be replicated by other institutions.

Bayesian Estimation Of The Intensity Function Of A Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process, James Jensen Oct 2022

Bayesian Estimation Of The Intensity Function Of A Non-Homogeneous Poisson Process, James Jensen

Theses

In this paper we explore Bayesian inference and its application to the problem of estimating the intensity function of a non-homogeneous Poisson process. These processes model the behavior of phenomena in which one or more events, known as arrivals, occur independently of one another over a certain period of time. We are concerned with the number of events occurring during particular time intervals across several realizations of the process. We show that given sufficient data, we are able to construct a piecewise-constant function which accurately estimates the mean rates on particular intervals. Further, we show that as we reduce these …

Detailing The Effects Of Cbd On Parp And Survivin Expression In Ewing Sarcoma, Tyler Carter Oct 2022

Detailing The Effects Of Cbd On Parp And Survivin Expression In Ewing Sarcoma, Tyler Carter

Theses

Ewing sarcoma (ES) is an aggressive pediatric bone cancer with low five-year survival rates, particularly with recurrent disease because ES often becomes resistant to chemotherapy in these recurrences. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been identified as a potentially promising therapeutic for patients with ES. In other cancer types, CBD has demonstrated effects on two major proteins that contribute to chemotherapy resistance. The first, Poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase I (PARP1), is a DNA damage repair enzyme that is overexpressed in recurrent ES. Though chemotherapy induces DNA damage in these cancer cells, the high levels of PARP1 facilitate repair of the DNA, allowing the mutated …

Factors That Affect School Counselor Retention In Rural Settings-An Exploratory Study, Rawn Boulden, Chris Schimmel Oct 2022

Factors That Affect School Counselor Retention In Rural Settings-An Exploratory Study, Rawn Boulden, Chris Schimmel

The Rural Educator

Teacher attrition is a well-known issue impacting K-12 schools in the United States. Sizeable research exists highlighting noteworthy factors that promote retention and attrition. However, scant research exists describing these factors within the context of school counselors working in rural settings. Considering this gap, we employed an inductive phenomenological approach to learn more about key attrition and retention factors, utilizing a sample of five rural school counselors employed in rural locales throughout the United States. Two overarching categories were identified: (a) school-based factors and (b) school community factors. Limitations and implications for rural school districts and counselor preparation programs are …

A Geographical Analysis Of Canadian Students Taking Independent Music Lessons: The Rural Experience, Ross M. Purves, Rena Upitis Oct 2022

A Geographical Analysis Of Canadian Students Taking Independent Music Lessons: The Rural Experience, Ross M. Purves, Rena Upitis

The Rural Educator

The engagement of students taking private music lessons is affected by a range of factors, one of which is the geographic location of the student’s family. This is a geographical analysis of 6,500 questionnaire responses completed by Canadian music teachers, students, and parents, including 819 responses (12.6%) from participants living in ‘rural’ areas, as defined by Statistics Canada. Participants’ home locations were categorized on a five-point ordinal scale from ‘rural’ to ‘very large urban population center’, data-matched with further geospatial data relating to deprivation and road distances, and assessed for strength and direction of association with questionnaire items. Results revealed …

Testing Ssa4::Ade3 Reporters For Mcs Screening, Chloe Ledford, Rebecca Adams Phd Oct 2022

Testing Ssa4::Ade3 Reporters For Mcs Screening, Chloe Ledford, Rebecca Adams Phd

Science University Research Symposium (SURS)

Gene expression is essential to life and occurs through the processes of transcription of mRNA in the nucleus, export of transcripts to the cytoplasm through the nuclear pore complex (NPC), and translation of the mRNA into protein in the cytosol. The budding yeast S. cerevisiae is a eukaryotic model system used to explore the regulation of mRNA export. Transcripts are able to exit the nucleus through interaction with Mex67 which binds mRNA via adaptor proteins and allows crossing through NPCs. However, during heat shock (42°C) known adaptor proteins are rendered dysfunctional thus halting general mRNA export. Under these conditions, specific …
