Rapidly Declining Body Size In An Insectivorous Bat Is Associated With Increased Precipitation And Decreased Survival, Christina M. Davy, Valerie Von Zuben, Pila M. Kukka, Brian D. Gerber, Brian G. Slough, Thomas S. Jung

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Reduced food availability is implicated in declines in avian aerial insectivores, but the effect of nutritional stress on mammalian aerial insectivores is unclear. Unlike birds, insectivorous bats provision their young through lactation, which might protect nursing juveniles when prey availability is low but could increase the energetic burden on lactating females. We analyzed a 15-year capture–mark–recapture data set from 5312 individual little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus) captured at 11 maternity colonies in northwestern Canada, to test the hypothesis that nutritional stress is impacting these mammalian aerial insectivores. We used long-bone (forearm [FA]) length as a proxy for relative access to …

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido Oct 2022

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Connecting with our children is something that many parents struggle with but often overthink. It is often through being purposeful and present that we create times to connect. To help parents and children find fun ways to connect, I wrote a book showing a mom and son doing everyday activities together. In addition to completing a reading of this book to local families in my community, I also created a brochure that provided a list of activities as well as some of the benefits of connecting with our children. At the completion of the reading event, we had a Q …

Helping Animals Find Their Forever Homes, Madison P. Wilmot

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Animals in shelters and foster care face unique challenges. The goal of this project is to come up with a creative solution to the major problems the animals face. The main problems the shelters are facing are overpopulation and negative environments. The foster care takers are struggling with a lack of resources, which is anything from education to connecting to other foster care takers. After researching the main problems, the best solution was creating a website that provides solutions and can be accessed at any time.

Deconstructing The University: Contemporary Dei, Neoliberal Rationalities, And The Abolition Of The Administrative Apparatus, Jonah Henkle

Media and Cultural Studies Honors Projects

The following chapters attempt to develop some working theories to combat capitalist exploitation and racist and gendered oppression in the university, culminating in a call for the abolition of the university’s administrative apparatus. The project is divided broadly into two parts, which are referential to each other, but maintain slightly different areas of focus. Part 1 details a preliminary critique of the political-economy of the contemporary neoliberal university, drawing influence from Marxian economics and structuralist theories of ideology, critiquing contemporary discourses of diversity, equity and inclusivity (DEI). Part 2 focuses more directly on issues pertaining to oppression and difference, maintaining …

The university employs a representation of different sectors in the academic community when dealing with major student conduct violations. Among them is the representative of the students. At the time of the study, the student representatives were qualified students who were recruited and trained to become part of the university discipline case conference panel. Upon successful completion of the training, these students were appointed to be members of a program for the pool of student representatives who sit as part of the university adjudicating body, which makes decisions for the university student discipline cases. Terminally, the researcher wanted to improve …

Dipl 2109 Institutions Of Global Governance, Leo Tamamizu

Diplomacy Syllabi

This class analyzes the concepts and theories of global governance. Currently, global governance has been a buzz word among academics as well as practitioners. However, because of its elusive nature, many are using this concept in different meanings in different contexts. I low can we understand it and how should we apply it to global issues such as wars, environmental destruction and pandemic? In the first part of the course, we will lay the groundwork to answer these questions. We will explore the conditions that make cooperation more or less likely. We will discuss actors in international relations: states, international …

Dipl 6360 Global Color Lines? Race And Racism In International Law And Politics, Zinaida Miller Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

What does race have to do with international law? This course will delve into historical and contemporary debates and discussions about the ways in which ideas about race have contributed to international law and politics - and vice versa. We will begin by asking what these ideas are. What do race or racism mean when it comes to law? We will study the construction of the international order through practices of slavery, colonialism, and settler colonialism. We will discuss each of these as systems of legalized dispossession and subordination. We will think about how they relate to, produced, and grew …

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

The Lemur Optimizer (LO) is a novel nature-inspired algorithm we propose in this paper. This algorithm’s primary inspirations are based on two pillars of lemur behavior: leap up and dance hub. These two principles are mathematically modeled in the optimization context to handle local search, exploitation, and exploration search concepts. The LO is first benchmarked on twenty-three standard optimization functions. Additionally, the LO is used to solve three real-world problems to evaluate its performance and effectiveness. In this direction, LO is compared to six well-known algorithms: Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA), Bat Algorithm …

Improving Access To Community Health Resources, Raheem D. Mohamed

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

My capstone project included a collaborative effort between myself, community members, and local organizations to improve the accessibility of community health resources and health outcomes of community members. My approach included creating an accessible website in different languages to hold up-to-date community health resources and essential details regarding access. These resources can fall into the social determinants of health categories such as economic stability, education access, health care access, neighborhood and built environment social, and community context. This project was important in helping to prevent poor health outcomes, such as community members getting diagnosed with preventative chronic diseases, which can …

Childcare Center Communication, Nicholas A. Meyerhoeffer

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

For my capstone project, I worked with the College of Southern Idaho Early Learning Center to identify their teacher and parent communication needs and then researched and reviewed communication platforms to implement a new application that allows parents and the daycare to chart the progress of their children. And it allows parents to stay in contact with their children’s caregivers/teachers throughout the day. This helps parents be able to know what their children are doing while they are at work or school. I was also able to volunteer and help at the daycare in order to identify their needs regarding …
