14 Black Classicists, Michele Valerie Ronnick

Lecture Series

The Department of Classics is hosting a traveling photographic and historical exhibit called, “14 Black Classicists”. The exhibit, conceived and curated by Dr. Michele Valerie Ronnick of Wayne State University, reflects on the role of advanced education (and especially of the study of Classics) in building a free and prosperous Black community in the United States. Dr. Ronnick has collected the stories of nineteenth-century Black Americans who chose to pursue advanced education in Greek and Latin language and ancient history, literature and art, and went on to teach in the field. The exhibit is open until November 18th, Monday through …

Trends In Us Emergency Department Use After Sexual Assault, 2006-2019, Emily L. Vogt, Charley Jiang, Quinton Jenkins, Maya J. Millette, Martina T. Caldwell, Kathleen S. Mehari, Erica E. Marsh

Emergency Medicine Articles

IMPORTANCE: Adult sexual assault (SA) survivors experience numerous emergent health problems, yet few seek emergency medical care. Quantifying the number and types of survivors presenting to US emergency departments (EDs) after SA can inform health care delivery strategies to reduce survivor morbidity and mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify ED use and factors that influenced seeking ED care for adult SA from 2006 through 2019.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used SA data from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample from 2006 through 2019, which includes more than 35.8 million observations of US ED visits from 989 hospitals, a 20% stratified …

Role Of Draw Rate And Molecular Weight When Electrospun Nanofibers Are Post-Drawn With Residual Solvent, Adriano Conte, Xiao Hu, Vincent Beachley Oct 2022

Role Of Draw Rate And Molecular Weight When Electrospun Nanofibers Are Post-Drawn With Residual Solvent, Adriano Conte, Xiao Hu, Vincent Beachley

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The postdrawing process is poorly understood for polymer nanofibers due to the difficulty of manipulating nanofiber structures. Here, an angled track system facilitates postdrawing of individual nanofibers with control of parameters including molecular weight, draw rate, draw ratio, and solvent evaporation time. In this study, the effects of molecular weight, draw rate, and relative residual solvent content on final nanofiber properties are investigated. Molecular weight is first investigated to clarify any influence polymer chain length can have on drawing in facilitating or hindering chain extensibility. Polyacrylonitrile nanofibers with 50 and 150 kDa molecular weights behave similarly with postdrawing resulting in …

Trauma- And Violence-Informed Care: Orienting Intimate Partner Violence Interventions To Equity., C Nadine Wathen, Tara Mantler Oct 2022

Trauma- And Violence-Informed Care: Orienting Intimate Partner Violence Interventions To Equity., C Nadine Wathen, Tara Mantler

Nursing Publications

Purpose of Review: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a complex traumatic experience that often co-occurs, or is causally linked, with other forms of structural violence and oppression. However, few IPV interventions integrate this social-ecological perspective. We examine trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) in the context of existing IPV interventions as an explicitly equity-oriented approach to IPV prevention and response.

Recent Findings: Systematic reviews of IPV interventions along the public health prevention spectrum show mixed findings, with those with a theoretically grounded, structural approach that integrates a trauma lens more likely to show benefit.

Summary: TVIC, embedded in survivor-centered protocols with …

Economic Trends Which Helped Spawn 60'S Uprisings And Helped Pave The Way For Affirmative Action In Employment And Admissions, Mark Naison

Occasional Essays

The following short summary of economic trends affecting the nation's Black population in the post WW 2 era are an essential backdrop to analyzing the rise of Affirmative Action in employment and education in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It will help explain why uprisings took place in so many urban black communities in the middle and late 1960's, with the largest taking place in Los Angeles, Newark and Detroit, and why a critical portion of the nation's leaders, along with a significant portion of the politically aware black population, felt that color blind civil rights law could not …

Stravinsky's Symphony Of Psalms Compared With Burton's Psalms Symphony, Roberto L. Burton Oct 2022

Stravinsky's Symphony Of Psalms Compared With Burton's Psalms Symphony, Roberto L. Burton

Masters Theses

"Stravinsky's own account of the composition of this great work follows and needs no addenda. But since composers don't always point out their greatest masterstrokes, here are a few additional comments. Listen closely to the first chord it recurs several times during the opening minutes of the first movement for although it is a simple e minor triad, in Stravinsky's hands even a conventional chord becomes distinctive. In assigning the triad's notes to the instruments of the orchestra, Stravinsky hands out twice as many G’s (minor triads) as the root of E or the fifth of B, contrary to what …
