Stress and craving, it has been found, contribute to the development and maintenance of and relapse in cocaine use disorder. Chronic cocaine users (CU), previous research has shown, display altered physiological responses to psychosocial stress and increased vegetative responding to substance-related cues. However, how psychosocial stress and cue-induced craving interact in relation to the CU's physiological responses remains largely unknown. We thus investigated the interaction between acute psychosocial stress and cocaine-cue-related reactivity in 47 CU and 38 controls. In a crossed and balanced design, the participants were randomly exposed to a video-based cocaine-cue paradigm and the Trier Social Stress Test …

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
With the continuous progress of renewable energy technology and the large-scale construction of microgrids, the architecture of power systems is becoming increasingly complex and huge. In order to achieve efficient and low-delay data processing and meet the needs of smart grid users, emerging smart energy systems are often deployed at the edge of the power grid, and edge computing modules are integrated into the microgrids system, so as to realize the cost-optimal control decision of the microgrids under the condition of load balancing. Therefore, this paper presents a bilevel optimization control model, which is divided into an upper-level optimal control …

This study explored an alternative assessment model to examine Chemistry learners’ progress. “The Assessment of Problem-Solving in Chemistry Learning” as a model represented students’ mastery of chemistry study. The data were from journaling narratives and analyzed through cognitive task analysis. Based on the analyses, a student model was established, which represents the qualitative information in a structure, and provides a potential framework of the assessment model for the quantitative representation—a Bayesian network assessment model. The student’s performance was assessed via the Bayesian network assessment model, and classified into three categories: low level, middle level, and high level. The mastery …

Studying The Behavior Of Cold-Formed Steel Sections In Lightweight Buildings, ِAml Badr, Nabil Mahmoud, Fikry A. Salem
Mansoura Engineering Journal
Over the last decade, the use of cold-formed steel (CFS) sections has increased significantly increasing in lightweight buildings and many other industrial constructions worldwide. The present research paper aims to investigate the distributed load capacity of CFS sections in lightweight buildings. Three CFS built-up sections were investigated for column and other three for girder in a frame of building study case. Channels, channels with lip, sigma section, hollow section, and/or plates were used to obtain column and girder profiles in frame. Self-tapping screws were applied to assemble the elements of each section. The finite element (FE) model was used to …

The proficiency in vernacular has long been a methodological ethos pervasive among field researchers and—despite new dynamics of fieldwork—still overshadows discussions related to collaboration with translators and interpreters, which are either marginalized or hidden within the category of a ‘research assistant’. The purpose of this study is to take a step beyond anecdotal evidence and explore trends in language proficiency and use of translation services among US based field researchers who had conducted international or domestic studies in an area where a language other than English was present. We conducted the largest-to-date survey on the subject and analyzed 913 responses …

Blood lipids are heritable modifiable causal factors for coronary artery disease. Despite well-described monogenic and polygenic bases of dyslipidemia, limitations remain in discovery of lipid-associated alleles using whole genome sequencing (WGS), partly due to limited sample sizes, ancestral diversity, and interpretation of clinical significance. Among 66,329 ancestrally diverse (56% non-European) participants, we associate 428M variants from deep-coverage WGS with lipid levels; ~400M variants were not assessed in prior lipids genetic analyses. We find multiple lipid-related genes strongly associated with blood lipids through analysis of common and rare coding variants. We discover several associated rare non-coding variants, largely at Mendelian lipid …

Remitted waves are used for sensing and imaging in diverse diffusive media from the Earth's crust to the human brain. Separating the source and detector increases the penetration depth of light, but the signal strength decreases rapidly, leading to a poor signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we show, experimentally and numerically, that wavefront shaping a laser beam incident on a diffusive sample enables an enhancement of remission by an order of magnitude at depths of up to 10 transport mean free paths. We develop a theoretical model which predicts the maximal remission enhancement. Our analysis reveals a significant improvement in the sensitivity …

There are differences in recommendations for the management of immune-related adverse events (irAEs) associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs). To assess the real-world management of irAEs, three surveys regarding ICI-induced hepatitis (IIH), renal irAEs, and myositis were developed and sent to experts in each area. Fifty-six surveys were completed (17 IIH, 20 renal irAEs, and 19 myositis). All experts agreed on performing imaging in every suspected case of severe IIH. Sixty-five percent agreed on performing a liver biopsy in patients not responding to corticosteroids. The most common indication for corticosteroid use (59%) was for severe IIH not improving after discontinuation …

Dysbiosis of the maternal gut microbiome during pregnancy is associated with adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. We previously showed that maternal high-fat diet (MHFD) in mice induces gut dysbiosis, social dysfunction, and underlying synaptic plasticity deficits in male offspring (F1). Here, we reason that, if HFD-mediated changes in maternal gut microbiota drive offspring social deficits, then MHFD-induced dysbiosis in F1 female MHFD offspring would likewise impair F2 social behavior. Metataxonomic sequencing reveals reduced microbial richness among female F1 MHFD offspring. Despite recovery of microbial richness among MHFD-descendant F2 mice, they display social dysfunction. Post-weaning Limosilactobacillus reuteri treatment increases the abundance of short-chain …

Tissue clearing for whole organ cell profiling has revolutionized biology and imaging for exploration of organs in three-dimensional space without compromising tissue architecture. But complicated, laborious procedures, or expensive equipment, as well as the use of hazardous, organic solvents prevent the widespread adoption of these methods. Here, we report a simple and rapid tissue clearing method, EZ Clear, that can clear whole adult mouse organs in 48 hr in just three simple steps. Samples stay at room temperature and remain hydrated throughout the clearing process, preserving endogenous and synthetic fluorescence, without altering sample size. After wholemount clearing and imaging, samples …

BACKGROUND: Compelling evidence suggests that the fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) / α-klotho axis is impaired in subjects with diabetes mellitus. We examined the relationship between parameters related to calcium/phosphate homeostasis, including FGF23 and α-klotho, and subclinical carotid atherosclerosis burden in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) subjects.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 226 subjects with T1D and 147 age-, sex- and plaque-matched, non-diabetic (non-T1D) subjects, both with normal renal function. Carotid ultrasound was performed to determine the presence and burden of atheromatous plaques. Concentrations of the intact form of FGF23 and α-klotho were assessed by ELISA. Calcium, phosphate, parathyroid hormone, …

We examine why organizations may at times decrease their performance after receiving a positive rating. We argue that in contrast to the prevailing assumption that organizations will strive for favorable ratings to achieve reputational benefits, incompatibility between a positive rating and a dominant institutional logic may cause recognized firms to question the perceived value of maintaining superior performance, thus leading them to strategically reduce their efforts on the rated dimension. Using a difference-in-differences design, we examine how companies responded to being rated as charitable organizations, an evaluation that we argue was generally perceived as incompatible with the dominant logic of …

Use Of High-Resolution Multi-Temporal Dem Data For Landslide Detection, Behnam Azmoon, Aynaz Biniyaz, Zhen (Leo) Liu
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Landslides in urban areas have been relatively well-documented in landslide inventories despite issues in accuracy and completeness, e.g., the absence of small landslides. By contrast, less attention has been paid to landslides in sparsely populated areas in terms of their occurrences and locations. This study utilizes high-resolution and LiDAR-derived digital elevation models (DEMs) at two different times for landslide detection to (1) improve the localization and detection accuracies in landslide inventories, (2) minimize human intervention in the landslide detection process, and (3) identify landslides that cannot be easily documented in the current state of the practice. To achieve this goal, …

In live cells, phase separation is thought to organize macromolecules into membraneless structures known as biomolecular condensates. Here, we reconstituted transcription in condensates from purified mitochondrial components using optimized in vitro reaction conditions to probe the structure-function relationships of biomolecular condensates. We find that the core components of the mt-transcription machinery form multiphasic, viscoelastic condensates in vitro. Strikingly, the rates of condensate-mediated transcription are substantially lower than in solution. The condensate-mediated decrease in transcriptional rates is associated with the formation of vesicle-like structures that are driven by the production and accumulation of RNA during transcription. The generation of RNA alters …

The presence of insoluble aggregates of amyloid β (Aβ) in the form of neuritic plaques (NPs) is one of the main features that define Alzheimer's disease. Studies have suggested that the accumulation of these peptides in the brain significantly contributes to extensive neuronal loss. Furthermore, the content and distribution of cholesterol in the membrane have been shown to have an important effect on the production and subsequent accumulation of Aβ peptides in the plasma membrane, contributing to dysfunction and neuronal death. The monomeric forms of these membrane-bound peptides undergo several conformational changes, ranging from oligomeric forms to beta-sheet structures, each …

Two Poems, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam
Two Poems, Mohammad Shafiqul Islam
Journal of International Women's Studies
The poems “Other Fish to Fry” and “Lives of Others” reflect on how South Asian women fall victim to social systems and prejudices about gender. The first poem, “Other Fish to Fry,” metaphorically presents a mother bird and its kids, who represent women suffering from discrimination and torture. “Lives of Others” also depicts women who migrate to Middle Eastern countries in order to earn money and bring solvency to their families. But over time, they are victimized by landlords and brokers who regularly torture them. As a result, both poems address violence against South Asian women, including heinous crimes such …
Quest For The Ideal: Devi Versus Reality, Jayita Sengupta
Quest For The Ideal: Devi Versus Reality, Jayita Sengupta
Journal of International Women's Studies
This short essay is a reflective piece attempting to understand the cultural nuances of Indian society, which shapes the consciousness of Indian men and women. While Indian society worships the ‘Devi,’ it does not treat women with the respect they deserve. Also, women sometimes do not deserve that admiration. There is always a conflict between the ideal and the real, and the quest for love and beauty remains an eternal one.
