Traumatic Anterior Shoulder Dislocation With Concomitant Pectoralis Rupture And Bankart Lesion, Alayna Vaughan, Tyler Luthringer, Joseph Abboud
Rothman Institute Papers
Traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation is frequently associated with injury to the static soft tissue stabilizers of the glenohumeral joint, with the most common injury being an anterior inferior labral avulsion (Bankart lesion) in 73% of patients after a first time dislocation1. Bony injury can also occur from a single episode of instability. Glenoid rim fractures occur in 5.4%-11% of patients. Greater tuberosity fractures occur in 12%-15% in primary anterior shoulder dislocations. Hill-Sachs lesions occur in 38%-90% of primary anterior shoulder dislocations. Less commonly there can be vascular and nerve injury. Additionally, in patients over the age of 40, rotator cuff …

Impairment of fish growth and immune system due to stress and disease are major constraints in aquaculture industry. Traditionally, antibiotic was used as prophylactic agent in the health management of aquaculture species. However, antibiotic only provide a temporary solution to the problem of disease outbreak. Over-reliance on antibiotic also has led to the increasing cases of antibiotic resistance among pathogenic bacteria from aquaculture sites and contamination of antibiotic residues into human food chain. Probiotic, prebiotic and symbiotic are therefore suggested as alternatives to prophylactic antibiotic to be used in the aquaculture industry. A potential prophylactic agent is polysaccharide that could …

At tidewater glacier termini, ocean-glacier interactions hinge on two sources of freshwater—submarine melt and subglacial discharge—yet these freshwater fluxes are often unconstrained in their magnitude, seasonality, and relationship. With measurements of ocean velocity, temperature and salinity, fjord budgets can be evaluated to partition the freshwater flux into submarine melt and subglacial discharge. We apply these methods to calculate the freshwater fluxes at LeConte Glacier, Alaska, across a wide range of oceanic and atmospheric conditions during six surveys in 2016–2018. We compare these ocean-derived fluxes with an estimate of subglacial discharge from a surface mass balance model and with estimates of …

Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation will present my work as a scholar-practitioner who seeks to find the balance between the scholarly knowledge and practitioner knowledge needed to adapt a nonfiction book for the screen. In grounding my project between these two knowledge bases, I am hoping to make a contribution to the scholarship surrounding adaptation theories when applied to film while producing a screenplay informed by both knowledges.

Different parts of Cynara scolymus L. and their green synthesized eco-friendly silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were screened for their cytotoxicity and apoptotic activity. Results showed that flower extract AgNPs exhibited more potent cytotoxicity compared to the normal form against PC-3 and A549 cell lines with IC50 values of 2.47 μg/mL and 1.35 μg/mL, respectively. The results were compared to doxorubicin (IC50 = 5.13 and 6.19 μg/mL, respectively). For apoptosis-induction, AgNPs prepared from the flower extract induced cell death by apoptosis by 41.34-fold change and induced necrotic cell death by 10.2-fold. Additionally, they induced total prostate apoptotic cell death by a 16.18-fold …

Environmental and Ocean Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events produce anomalous oceanographic and atmospheric conditions in regions far from the equatorial central-eastern Pacific, which modulate the atmospheric and surface processes that influence the dust emission, transport, and deposition in many places on Earth. In this study, we examined the MERRA-2 dust column mass density data in five subregions of the “dust belt”: eastern and western Arabian Peninsula, western and eastern Central Asia, and North Africa-Sahara during 1980–2021. We discovered that, while there is a common dust season from April to July, the specific dust seasons in these subregions are different with the peaks of …

Without doubt, the increase in ICT has proven a library to be a living and growing organism. Coping with technology changes are the principal driving forces of the emerging information age librarian and it seems most librarians are less equipped through formal training for the technological demand in library services. The study investigated the use of mentoring as a tool for re-skilling the academic librarian in the ICT age. Descriptive survey was adopted for the study and total enumeration was used for the sample as all the librarians in the university were used for the study. The questionnaire was …

Combined interventions for neuromodulation leading to neurorecovery have gained great attention by researchers to resemble clinical rehabilitation approaches. In this randomized clinical trial, we established changes in the net output of motoneurons innervating multiple leg muscles during stepping when transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of the primary motor cortex was paired with transcutaneous spinal (transspinal) stimulation over the thoracolumbar region during locomotor training. TMS was delivered before (TMS-transspinal) or after (transspinal-TMS) transspinal stimulation during the stance phase of the less impaired leg. Ten individuals with chronic incomplete or complete SCI received at least 20 sessions of training. Each session consisted of …

Dissertations
This study researches the relationship between motivation and academic success by utilizing the concepts of Vroom's Expectancy Theory: Valence, Expectancy, and Instrumentality. In order to quantify motivation, the Valence, Instrumentality, Expectancy, and Motivation Score (VIEMS) was used. The population assessed consisted of 375 nurse assistant students in the state of Illinois. The self-reported survey tool was evaluated to assess the constructs of Vroom's Expectancy Theory, thus investigating their motivation level. This level was then compared to their performance on the Illinois Nurse Assistant Training Competency Examination.

Meteor radars have become widely used instruments to study atmospheric dynamics, particularly in the 70 to 110 km altitude region. These systems have been proven to provide reliable and continuous measurements of horizontal winds in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. Recently, there have been many attempts to utilize specular and/or transverse scatter meteor measurements to estimate vertical winds and vertical wind variability. In this study we investigate potential biases in vertical wind estimation that are intrinsic to the meteor radar observation geometry and scattering mechanism, and we introduce a mathematical debiasing process to mitigate them. This process makes use of …

Real-World Effectiveness Of Pneumococcal Vaccination In Older Adults: Cohort Study Using The Uk Clinical Practice Research Datalink, Aj Streeter, Lr Rodgers, J Masoli, Nx Lin, A Blé, W Hamilton, We Henley
Peninsula Medical School
Background The 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) is recommended for UK older adults, but how age moderates effectiveness is unclear. Methods Three annual cohorts of primary-care patients aged≥65y from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink selected from 2003–5 created a natural experiment (n = 324,804), reflecting the staged introduction of the vaccine. The outcome was symptoms consistent with community-acquired pneumococcal pneumonia (CAP) requiring antibiotics or hospitalisation. We used the prior event rate ratio (PERR) approach to address bias from unmeasured confounders. Results Vaccinated patients had higher rates of CAP in the year before vaccination than their controls, indicating the potential for …

Background: The diagnostic rate of Mendelian disorders in sequencing studies continues to increase, along with the pace of novel disease gene discovery. However, variant interpretation in novel genes not currently associated with disease is particularly challenging and strategies combining gene functional evidence with approaches that evaluate the phenotypic similarities between patients and model organisms have proven successful. A full spectrum of intolerance to loss-of-function variation has been previously described, providing evidence that gene essentiality should not be considered as a simple and fixed binary property.
Methods: Here we further dissected this spectrum by assessing the embryonic stage at which homozygous …

Lung cancer presents one of the most challenging carcinomas with meager 5-year survival rates (less than 20%), high metastasis and high recurrence due to chemo- and radio- resistance. An alternative or complementation to existing prognosis modalities is the use of phytochemicals such as silibinin, which targets essential cytokines, angiogenic factors and transcription factors for a profound anti-tumor effect. However, the problems of low solubility in an aqueous physiological environment, poor penetration, high metabolism and rapid systemic clearance limit the therapeutic use of silibinin. Conjugation of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with silibinin may overcome the above challenges along with distinct advantages of …
