Exhibition Interpretation And The Visitor Experience, Theresa Ryan Oct 2022

Exhibition Interpretation And The Visitor Experience, Theresa Ryan

Case Studies

This case study explores the techniques used to interpret a commemorative exhibition staged in Dublin city library between the 14th of August and the 31st of October, 2019. The case discusses the way in which multiple media were employed to communicate the exhibition narrative to visitors, and how this resulted in very emotive, personal and meaningful visitor experiences. Through the use of a range of audio-visuals, original images, text, memorabilia and guided tours, the exhibition provided a multi-sensory experience, that engaged different cohorts of visitors with the collections, information and ideas on display. They provided a powerful means of …

Evaluating Dimensionality Reduction For Genomic Prediction, Vamsi Manthena, Diego Jarquín, Rajeev K. Varshney, Manish Roorkiwal, Girish Prasad Dixit, Chellapilla Bharadwaj, Reka Howard

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

The development of genomic selection (GS) methods has allowed plant breeding programs to select favorable lines using genomic data before performing field trials. Improvements in genotyping technology have yielded high-dimensional genomic marker data which can be difficult to incorporate into statistical models. In this paper, we investigated the utility of applying dimensionality reduction (DR) methods as a pre-processing step for GS methods. We compared five DR methods and studied the trend in the prediction accuracies of each method as a function of the number of features retained. The effect of DR methods was studied using three models that involved the …

“To Expel Or Embrace? The Challenge And Promise Of Handing Down The Catholic Intellectual Tradition In Light Of Dei Verbum”, Grant Kaplan

Events

Introduction:

The conference description puts in remarkably succinct language what it takes most academics a long time to say. The description prompts participants “to explore how our reading and understanding of Vatican II documents, as well as the formative thinkers of Vatican II and the Catholic intellectual tradition, can deepen and expand our vision of Catholic higher education, addressing new and old challenges.” In accordance with this prompt, my paper will take up one challenge, an old one: handing on the Catholic intellectual tradition.

Pemeriksaan Keimigrasian Di Perbatasan Darat Indonesia Dari Perspektif Borderscapes, Geopolitik, Dan Biopolitik, Ari Arianto, Deni Septiyanto, Fadil Hidayat, Farhan Kamil

Jurnal Kajian Stratejik Ketahanan Nasional

Borderscapes is a new way to view the border shared between two nations. Borderscapes is a view that tries to combine a more people-oriented view and Michel Foucault’s biopolitics. Borderscapes emphasize on the conditions for people who live on the border between two nations and on both sides of the border, such a view makes borderscapes share a lot of similarities with a new paradigm of how border should be treated called soft border. With this new way to view borders, new challenges and opportunities arise caused by the border between two countries and by people who live on the …

Joy And Hope On The Margins: The Mission Imperative Of Access To Catholic Higher Education, Patricia Mcguire Oct 2022

Joy And Hope On The Margins: The Mission Imperative Of Access To Catholic Higher Education, Patricia Mcguire

Events

Introduction:

Words written in 1965 seem prophetic for today’s challenges to the human community:

“Never has the human race enjoyed such an abundance of wealth, resources and economic power, and yet a huge proportion of the world’s citizens are still tormented by hunger and poverty, while countless numbers suffer from total illiteracy. …political, social, economic, racial and ideological disputes still continue bitterly, and with them the peril of a war which would reduce everything to ashes.” (Gaudium et Spes #4)

The content and structure of Gaudium et Spes suggests a curriculum for Catholic Higher Education that is broad and deep …

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This study explored the correlates of climate anxiety in a diverse range of national contexts. We analysed cross-sectional data gathered in 32 countries (N = 12,246). Our results show that climate anxiety is positively related to rate of exposure to information about climate change impacts, the amount of attention people pay to climate change information, and perceived descriptive norms about emotional responding to climate change. Climate anxiety was also positively linked to pro-environmental behaviours and negatively linked to mental wellbeing. Notably, climate anxiety had a significant inverse association with mental wellbeing in 31 out of 32 countries. In contrast, it …

Applying Positive Psychology’S Subjective Well-Being To Online Interactions, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Yimin Chen, Victoria Rubin, Sarah Cornwell

Data and Test Instruments

This paper outlines the complexity of the psychological construct of individuals' subjective well-being (SWB) and argues for the importance of examining behaviours and linguistic expression of individuals online social interactions in relation to self-reported SWB. This paper calls for a systematic review of the psychology research which examines SWB and its association with various character strengths, personality traits, and behaviours. While the Big Five personality traits (OCEAN) have an underlying neuropsychological basis and are considered as universal dimensions of personality along which humans differ one from another, minimal research has attempted to evaluate the relationship between personality traits, SWB, and …

Engagement For Good Or Ill: Comparing Characteristics Of Co-Creative And Co-Destructive Online Communities, Yimin Chen, Sarah Cornwell, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Victoria Rubin Oct 2022

Engagement For Good Or Ill: Comparing Characteristics Of Co-Creative And Co-Destructive Online Communities, Yimin Chen, Sarah Cornwell, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Victoria Rubin

Data and Test Instruments

Highly engaged online communities can be characterized in terms of level of user activity and the valence of those activities. Positively-valenced communities engage in co-construction through supportive, uplifting interactions, while negatively-valenced communities engage in co-destruction through shared animosity towards outside individuals and groups. Both types of engagement offer prosocial benefits to community members, but this benefit is achieved through antisocial means in co-destructive communities. This study examines the features of one positively-valenced and one negatively-valenced subreddit community to determine if the same engagement factors drive participation in each, and whether these factors may be influenced to promote positive, rather than …

Envisioning Ethical Mass Influence Systems, Alex Mayhew, Yimin Chen, Sarah Cornwell, Nicole Delellis, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Victoria Rubin

Data and Test Instruments

This work envisions the possibility of ethical Mass Influence Systems (MISs). Modern algorithmic MISs, like Facebook and YouTube, have seen a link between the systems design for profit maximization and the increased radicalization of users (Wu, 2017). Using a Goals analysis grounded in philosophy (Falcon, 2022; Lipton, 1990; Bostrom, 2014), we will contrast the goals of existing algorithmic MISs with the goals of a future ethical algorithmic MIS. With the philosophical guidance of the Moral Parliament (Newberry and Ord, 2021) and the Moral Landscape (Janoff-Bulman and Carnes, 2013), we elaborate on a set of goals and mechanisms for promoting human …

Supporting Prosocial Behaviour In Online Communities Through Social Media Affordances, Dominique Kelly, Liu Yifan, Alex Mayhew, Sarah Cornwell, Yimin Chen, Nicole Delellis, Victoria Rubin

Data and Test Instruments

Affordances are action possibilities that emerge from the relationship between the properties of an object and an interacting agent’s capabilities. This poster examines how one type of affordance—anonymity—is enabled or constrained by six features of social media platforms. Our work is one step in a broader agenda to: (1) identify affordances that influence users’ behaviour in online communities; (2) outline the social media features that enable or constrain those affordances; and, (3) experimentally determine whether certain affordances, or combinations of affordances, support prosocial behaviour. Prosocial behaviour in information and communication technologies (ICTs) is broadly viewed here as benefiting other individuals …

Charter Day School, Inc. v. Bonnie Peltier

On Petition for a Writ of Certiorari to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit

From the Summary of Argument

The Fourth Circuit’s gross misapplication of state-action doctrine contradicts decades of precedent and expands the doctrine beyond its breaking point. If not corrected, that analysis would also endanger many vital public services provided by religious charitable groups and undermine this Court’s recent free-exercise cases in the process.

Coastal Wetland Area Change For Two Freshwater Diversions In The Mississippi River Delta, John R. White, Brady Couvillion, John W. Day Oct 2022

Coastal Wetland Area Change For Two Freshwater Diversions In The Mississippi River Delta, John R. White, Brady Couvillion, John W. Day

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Coastal systems around the globe are being re-integrated with adjacent river systems to restore the natural hydrologic connection to riparian wetlands. The Mississippi River sediment diversions or river reconnections are one such tool to combat high rates of wetland loss in coastal Louisiana, USA by providing freshwater, sediment, and nutrients. There has been some disagreement in the published literature whether re-establishing river reconnection is slowing or contributing to coastal wetland loss. This issue is due to the difficulties in the application of remote sensing in low-relief environments where water level changes could indicate either land loss or simply temporary submergence. …
