Violencia, Memoria Y Empatía Reflexiva En El Ruido De Las Cosas Al Caer De Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Carlos Gardeazábal Bravo Oct 2022

Violencia, Memoria Y Empatía Reflexiva En El Ruido De Las Cosas Al Caer De Juan Gabriel Vásquez, Carlos Gardeazábal Bravo

Global Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this article, I show how Juan Gabriel Vásquez’s novel El ruido de las cosas al caer (The Sound of Things Falling, 2011) proposes an articulation of the works of memory and affects that can be ethically relevant within the context of the war on drugs in Colombia. I link this analysis with an interpretation of the novel that discusses the role of literature in debates about systemic violence in the global war on drugs. I propose that The noise of things falling, thanks to its affirmation of what I call reflexive empathy, questions the geopolitical designs that articulate that …

Evidence For Phylogenetic Signal And Correlated Evolution In Plant-Water Relations Traits, Eleinis Ávila-Lovera, Klaus Winter, Gregory R. Goldsmith Oct 2022

Evidence For Phylogenetic Signal And Correlated Evolution In Plant-Water Relations Traits, Eleinis Ávila-Lovera, Klaus Winter, Gregory R. Goldsmith

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Evolutionary relationships are likely to play a significant role in shaping plant physiological and structural traits observed in contemporary taxa. We review research on phylogenetic signal and correlated evolution in plant-water relations traits, which play important roles in allowing plants to acquire, use and conserve water. We found more evidence for a phylogenetic signal in structural traits (e.g., stomatal length, stomatal density) than in physiological traits (e.g., stomatal conductance, water potential at turgor loss). Although water potential at turgor loss is the most-studied plant-water relations trait in an evolutionary context, it is the only trait consistently found to not have …

Metalp: An Integrative Linear Programming Method For Protein Inference In Metaproteomics, Shichao Feng, Hong-Long Ji, Huan Wang, Bailu Zhang, Ryan Sterzenbach, Chongle Pan, Xuan Guo

Cellular and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Metaproteomics based on high-throughput tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) plays a crucial role in characterizing microbiome functions. The acquired MS/MS data is searched against a protein sequence database to identify peptides, which are then used to infer a list of proteins present in a metaproteome sample. While the problem of protein inference has been well-studied for proteomics of single organisms, it remains a major challenge for metaproteomics of complex microbial communities because of the large number of degenerate peptides shared among homologous proteins in different organisms. This challenge calls for improved discrimination of true protein identifications from false protein identifications given …

Graybeal, Caleb F. Brandner, Grant M. Tinsley, Hunter Haynes, Jon Stavres

Faculty Publications

Assessments of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) are critical in preventing metabolic disorders; however, there are limited measurement methods that are accurate and accessible for VAT. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the association between VAT estimates from consumer-grade devices and traditional anthropometrics and VAT and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Data were collected from 182 participants (female = 114; White = 127; Black/African-American (BAA) = 48) which included anthropometrics and indices of VAT produced by near-infrared reactance spectroscopy (NIRS), visual body composition (VBC) and multifrequency BIA (MFBIA). VAT and SAT were collected using …

Hybrid Teaching For Music Information Literacy, Taylor Greene Oct 2022

Hybrid Teaching For Music Information Literacy, Taylor Greene

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials

The Music Information Literacy course taught by the Performing Arts Librarian at Chapman University’s Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music has evolved in its format and pedagogical approach over the period of 8 years. In this talk, I discuss this evolution from its inception into its present version; a hybrid of online asynchronous learning modules and in-person instruction and activities. This presentation is an update to a previous talk (2016) and poster (2018) at Music Library Association Annual Meetings, both of which focused on specific aspects of the Music Information Literacy course. I discuss the benefits that became evident during the online …

Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali Oct 2022

Controlling Electro-Magnetic Functionality Of Ruthenates By Heterostructure Design, Zeeshan Ali

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Perovskite oxides (ABO3) show wide range of functionalities originating from interplay of structural, spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedoms. The bulk perovskite structure could be controlled via conventional chemical substitution, though exploiting heterostructure engineering novel ground states could be observed which otherwise are absent in bulk. In this thesis, the interest is to explore the electro-magnetic phenomena as complex oxides are confined in heterostructures.

I first investigate electromagnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate: SrRuO3 (SRO); spatially confined between SrTiO3 (STO) i.e., STO5-SROn-STO5 with n = 1- and 2-unit cells. It …
