Influenza Vaccination Coverage Among An Urban Pediatric Asthma Population: Implications For Population Health, Sarah J. Parker, Amy M. Delaroche, Alex B. Hill, Rajan Arora, Julie Gleason-Comstock

Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications

Introduction
Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children. Children with asthma are at high risk for complications from influenza; however annual influenza vaccination rates for this population are suboptimal. The overall aim of this study was to describe the characteristics of a high-risk population of children with asthma presenting to an urban pediatric emergency department according to influenza vaccination status.

Methods
The study was a retrospective chart review of 4355 patients aged 2 to 18 years evaluated in a Michigan pediatric emergency department (PED) between November 1, 2017 and April 30, 2018 with an ICD-10-CM code for asthma …

Moss-Magee Rehabilitation Papers

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the demographic, clinical characteristics, and effectiveness of early inpatient rehabilitation of post-COVID survivors.

DESIGN: A single-center retrospective chart review analysis of 100 patients admitted to a newly created acute COVID rehabilitation unit (CORE+) from April to December 2020 was conducted.

RESULTS: The demographic and clinical characteristics and complications of 100 post-COVID patients were reviewed. Functional outcomes of GG Self-care and Mobility Activities Items (Section GG0130 and GG0170) of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patient Assessment Instrument (Version 3.0) at admission and discharge, prevalence of …

Exploring Community Recreation And Leisure Of Young Adults With Autism, Alexandria Taylor, Otd, Otr/L, Eis, Amy Carroll, Otd, Otr/L

Department of Occupational Therapy Posters and Presentations

Introduction

  • Adults with autism participate less in the community compared to adults with other diagnoses (e.g., intellectual disability, emo tional disturbance, and learning disabilities) (Myers et al., 2015; Orsmond et al., 2013).
  • Quantitative studies have shown the benefits of participating in recreation and leisure activities for young adults with auti sm (Bishop Fitzpatrick et al., 2017; Garcia Villamisar & Dattilo, 2010; Stacey et al., 2019).
  • The use of qualitative research has been recommended to offer a deeper understanding (Stacey et al., 2019).
  • The lack of opportunity for young adults with autism to share their experiences and opinions can lead to …

The Socioeconomic Impact On Presentation And Clinical Course Of Celiac Disease, Christopher Cao, Md, Peter Block, Md, Madeline Russell, Md, Justin Robbins, Md, Anthony J. Dimarino, Md, Stephanie Moleski Oct 2022

The Socioeconomic Impact On Presentation And Clinical Course Of Celiac Disease, Christopher Cao, Md, Peter Block, Md, Madeline Russell, Md, Justin Robbins, Md, Anthony J. Dimarino, Md, Stephanie Moleski

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Posters

Introduction

  • Celiac Disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune condition primarily affecting the small intestine.
  • CD is triggered by ingestion of gluten and the only effective treatment for CD involves strict and lifelong elimination of dietary gluten.
  • Compliance with the gluten free diet (GFD) relies on purchasing gluten-free foods. Studies have shown the cost of a GFD to be from 76% to 518% more expensive than gluten containing counterparts. Because of this, the economic burden that CD patients face may be substantial, placing these patients at high risk for dietary neglect.
  • Financial limitation aside, GFD availability also varies by differing neighborhoods, …

Mitigating The Adverse Effects Of Semi-Arid Climate On Capsicum Cultivation By Using The Retractable Roof Production System, Giao N. Nguyen, Neil Lantzke Oct 2022

Mitigating The Adverse Effects Of Semi-Arid Climate On Capsicum Cultivation By Using The Retractable Roof Production System, Giao N. Nguyen, Neil Lantzke

Horticulture Research Articles

Capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.) belongs to the Solanaceae family and is an economically important vegetable crop. However, the crop is very sensitive to adverse weather conditions such as high temperatures and excessive sunlight, which cause flower and young fruit to drop and sunscald to mature fruits. Using protected cultivation such as shade covers or net houses is a feasible agronomic approach to protect the crop from high light intensity, which increases plant growth, reduces fruit damage, and increases marketable fruit yield and quality. Low-cost protected cropping options such as fixed-roof net houses have proved cost-effective and suitable for fruiting vegetable …

Background: There were increased SARS-CoV2 hospitalizations and deaths noted during Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant surge in the UK despite decreased cases, and the reasons are unclear.

Methods: In this retrospective observational study, we analyzed reported SARS-CoV2 cases, hospitalizations, deaths, and variables that affect the outcomes (including ethnicity, deprivation score, vaccination disparities, and pre-existing conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK. The vaccine effectiveness among those ≥ 18 years of age was also analyzed (August 16, 2021-March 27, 2022).

Results: During the latter part of the Omicron variant surge (February 28-May 1, 2022 a significantly increased proportion of cases (23.7% vs …

Opioids For Dyspnea End Of Life Review, Lindsey Obarzanek, Wendy Wu, Victoria Tutag-Lehr Oct 2022

Opioids For Dyspnea End Of Life Review, Lindsey Obarzanek, Wendy Wu, Victoria Tutag-Lehr

Library Scholarly Publications

Objective: The objective of this systematic review is to consolidate the existing evidence on opioid use, including administration, dosing and efficacy, for the relief of dyspnea at end-of-life. The overarching goal is to optimize clinical management of dyspnea by identifying patterns in opioid use, improving opioid management of dyspnea, and to prioritize future research.

Background: Opioids are commonly used in the management of dyspnea at end of life; yet specific administration guidelines are limited. A greater understanding of the effectiveness of opioids in relieving end-of-life dyspnea with consideration of study design, patients, and opioids, including dyspnea evaluation tools …
