This Is Sparta!: Attitudes Of Ncaa Division I Compliance Officers Towards Athlete Agent Regulations, Mark Thomas Gurenlian Oct 2022

This Is Sparta!: Attitudes Of Ncaa Division I Compliance Officers Towards Athlete Agent Regulations, Mark Thomas Gurenlian

Student Theses and Dissertations

The topic covered in this Thesis is that of the Sports Agent Responsibility and Trust Act (SPARTA), the state adopted Uniform Athlete Agents Act, and any other laws that are used to control athlete agents. Specifically, how these laws fail to properly protect collegiate student-athletes and fail to regulate athlete agents. There is a review of previous articles and research that promote the idea that SPARTA was not fully comprehensive and that the UAAA laws are missing key details. The study consists of a questionnaire sent to Division I compliance officers and their responses supported the notion that not only …

Successes with anti-CD20 antibodies in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and enhanced activity of Fc-engineered vs unmodified antibody therapy suggest a potentially impactful role for natural killer (NK) cells and other innate immune cells in controlling this disease. Stimulated NK cells have shown promise as a cellular therapy, but their application has been constrained by limited expansion capacity and low cytotoxic activity against CLL cells. Here, we demonstrate that both healthy donor-derived and CLL patient-derived NK cells expand rapidly when stimulated with feeder cells expressing membrane-bound interleukin-21 (mbIL-21) and have potent cytotoxic activity against allogeneic or autologous CLL cells. Combination with …

Your Voice Matters: Assessing The Need For A Resource Center, Hanzi Xie, Christie Sahley, Megan Sapp-Nelson, Linda Mason, Donna Ferullo

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations

With the transformation of the AGEP project initiative, identifying and preserving the knowledge created and making it available for re-use by other researchers and higher education institutions will require the development of a specific intervention.

The current trajectory for the Alliances materials will fail to reach the larger audiences needed to realize their full promise and the materials will be lost over time due to the absence of infrastructure to provide ongoing access.

Disability Insurance Screening And Worker Outcomes, Alexander Ahammer, Analisa Packham Oct 2022

Disability Insurance Screening And Worker Outcomes, Alexander Ahammer, Analisa Packham

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We estimate the returns to more targeted disability insurance (DI) programs in terms of labor force participation and worker health. To do so, we analyze male workers after an acute workplace injury that experience differential levels of application screening. We find that when workers face tighter screening requirements, they are less likely to claim disability and are more likely to remain in the labor force. We observe no differences in any physical or mental health outcomes, including reinjury. Our findings imply that imposing stricter DI screening requirements has large fiscal benefits but does not yield any detectable health costs, on …

Research On Drill Pipe Pose Recognition Technology Based On Monocular Vision, Ma Bin, Peng Guangyu

Coal Geology & Exploration

As a key technology in the field of intelligent drilling equipment, automatic drill pipe loading and unloading technology restricts the automation and intelligent development of underground drilling equipment in coal mines. The existing drill pipe automatic loading and unloading system mainly relies on the mechanical structure and proximity switches for positioning, which has the problem of poor positioning accuracy and low automation. To solve this problem, a drill pipe pose recognition algorithm based on monocular vision technology was proposed. The camera was used to capture the image containing the cooperative target, and the relative distance and posture between the camera …

Design And Application Of Pump-Free Double Channel Mechanical Hole Enlarging Bit For Gas Penetration In Middle Hard Coal Seam, Gao Xiaoliang, Shao Guojie, Yang Huwei

Coal Geology & Exploration

In borehole enlarge drilling, it is necessary to adjust the flow of mud pump to switch drilling and borehole enlarging state, and the control effect is not ideal. To improve the precision of the borehole enlarging technology while drilling machinery control, a pump-free double channel mechanical borehole enlarging drill bit was developed, which equiped with dual channel to form a complete set of double channel drill pipe and double channel water device. Two sets of individual waterways were designed, annulus water way for cooling bit and carry out rock powder, and center water way is used to control the opening …

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Topological phase in magnetic materials yields a quantized contribution to the Hall effect known as the topological Hall effect, which is often caused by skyrmions, with each skyrmion creating a magnetic flux quantum ±h/e. The control and understanding of topological properties in nanostructured materials is the subject of immense interest for both fundamental science and technological applications, especially in spintronics. In this work, the electron-transport properties and spin structure of exchange-coupled cobalt nanoparticles with an average particle size of 13.7 nm are studied experimentally and theoretically. Magnetic and Hall-effect measurements identify topological phase transitions in the exchange-coupled cobalt …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), a by-product of aerobic life, are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons. The excess of ROS leads to oxidative stress, instigating the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the lipid membrane through a free radical chain reaction and the formation of the most bioactive aldehyde, known as 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE). 4-HNE functions as a signaling molecule and toxic product and acts mainly by forming covalent adducts with nucleophilic functional groups in proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids. The mitochondria have been implicated as a site for 4-HNE generation and adduction. Several studies clarified how 4-HNE affects the …

Synthetic Pseudo-Spin-Hall Effect In Acoustic Metamaterials, Matthew Weiner, Xiang Ni, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev Oct 2022

Synthetic Pseudo-Spin-Hall Effect In Acoustic Metamaterials, Matthew Weiner, Xiang Ni, Andrea Alù, Alexander B. Khanikaev

Advanced Science Research Center

While vector fields naturally offer additional degrees of freedom for emulating spin, acoustic pressure field is scalar in nature, and it requires engineering of synthetic degrees of freedom by material design. Here we experimentally demonstrate the control of sound waves by using two types of engineered acoustic systems, where synthetic pseudo-spin emerges either as a consequence of the evanescent nature of the field or due to lattice symmetry. First, we show that evanescent sound waves in perforated films possess transverse angular momentum locked to their propagation direction which enables their directional excitation. Second, we demonstrate that lattice symmetries of an …

Biomarkers Beyond Brca: Promising Combinatorial Treatment Strategies In Overcoming Resistance To Parp Inhibitors, Yu-Yi Chu, Clinton Yam, Hirohito Yamaguchi, Mien-Chie Hung

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors (PARPi) exploit the concept of synthetic lethality and offer great promise in the treatment of tumors with deficiencies in homologous recombination (HR) repair. PARPi exert antitumor activity by blocking Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation (PARylation) and trapping PARP1 on damaged DNA. To date, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved four PARPi for the treatment of several cancer types including ovarian, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer. Although patients with HR-deficient tumors benefit from PARPi, majority of tumors ultimately develop acquired resistance to PARPi. Furthermore, even though BRCA1/2 mutations are commonly used as markers of PARPi sensitivity in …
