Tire wear particles (TWPs) are a major category of microplastic pollution produced by friction between tires and road surfaces. This non-exhaust particulate matter (PM) is transported through the air and with runoff leading to environmental pollution and health concerns. Here, we collected airborne PM along paved roads with different traffic volumes and speeds using Sigma-2 passive samplers. Particles entering the samplers deposit onto substrates for analysis, or, as we modified it, directly into small (60 ml) separatory funnels, which is particularly useful with high particle loads, where a density separation aids in isolating the microplastics. We quantified putative TWPs (∼10–80 …

Successful Buprenorphine Transition While Overlapping With A Full Opioid Agonist To Treat Chronic Pain: A Case Report, Kishan V. Patel, Sidharth Sahni, Lanvin F. Taylor Oct 2022

Successful Buprenorphine Transition While Overlapping With A Full Opioid Agonist To Treat Chronic Pain: A Case Report, Kishan V. Patel, Sidharth Sahni, Lanvin F. Taylor

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Buprenorphine is a partial mu opioid agonist that has been increasingly utilized to treat patients with chronic pain and opioid use disorder (OUD). The drug has proven to provide significant chronic pain relief at low doses ranging from 75 to 1800 mcg. The conventional buprenorphine transitional process delays its introduction until patients begin withdrawal. However, this process can pose a barrier to both patients and providers due to some patients' inability to tolerate traditional prerequisite withdrawal. To our knowledge, this is a rare reported case to describe a transitional process utilizing buccal buprenorphine in which a patient with chronic pain …

Global Challenges To Human Rights Today, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein

Events

In this lecture, Zeid discusses his concerns about the threats to global stability posed by such forces as racism, xenophobia, nationalism and authoritarian leaders, and poses that the safety of humanity will be secured only through vision, energy and generosity of spirit. According to Zeid, "Silence does not earn you any respect — none," and only through civic activism can we ensure equality and justice.

Most human genetic variation is classified as variants of uncertain significance. While advances in genome editing have allowed innovation in pooled screening platforms, many screens deal with relatively simple readouts (viability, fluorescence) and cannot identify the complex cellular phenotypes that underlie most human diseases. In this paper, we present a generalizable functional genomics platform that combines high-content imaging, machine learning, and microraft isolation in a method termed "Raft-Seq". We highlight the efficacy of our platform by showing its ability to distinguish pathogenic point mutations of the mitochondrial regulator Mitofusin 2, even when the cellular phenotype is subtle. We also show …

Tuning The Mechanical Behavior Of Density-Graded Elastomeric Foam Structures Via Interlayer Properties., Kazi Z Uddin, Ibnaj A Anni, George Youssef, Behrad Koohbor

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

The concept of density-graded foams has been proposed to simultaneously enhance strain energy dissipation and the load-bearing capacities at a reduced structural weight. From a practical perspective, the fabrication of density-graded foams is often achieved by stacking different foam densities. Under such conditions, the adhesive interlayer significantly affects the mechanical performance and failure modes of the structure. This work investigates the role of different adhesive layers on the mechanical and energy absorption behaviors of graded flexible foams with distinct density layers. Three adhesive candidates with different chemical, physical, and mechanical characteristics are used to assemble density-graded polyurea foam structures. The …

Insights From Nursing Students About Factors Affecting And Strategies Supporting Their Mental Health, Saima Hirani, Ambreen Tharani, Zohra Jetha, Shehla Khan

Journal of Wellness

Introduction: Nursing students experience high stress and mental health issues. It is essential to pay adequate attention to students’ mental health so they are trained to deliver quality patient care in complex settings. In order to provide a healthy environment to student nurses, it is essential that nursing students’ voices are heard. This study aims to explore nursing students’ perceptions about factors that influence their mental health and understand strategies that support mental health during nursing education.

Methods: The study used an exploratory descriptive qualitative design to achieve the objective. Purposive sampling was used to recruit nursing students from a …

University Media Coverage Of Rape Cases And Its Contribution To Victim Blaming, Chelsea Cheyenne Hays Oct 2022

University Media Coverage Of Rape Cases And Its Contribution To Victim Blaming, Chelsea Cheyenne Hays

Student Theses and Dissertations

In this study I focus on whether the media has any effect on victim-blaming in the universities setting. I looked particularly at Ivy league universities due to their prestige. I focus on how they handled the assault, the language used by the media for the perpetrator and the survivor. In this study the university that I studied were Duke University, Vanderbilt University, and Stanford University. I used a critical content to analysis to find emerging themes throughout national newspapers, The New York Times and USA Today. I also looked at the student newspaper for each university. My findings concluded that …

The Impact Of Ethical Hacking Within Small Businesses, Nygia Tribbey

Cybersecurity Undergraduate Research Showcase

The Internet has brought about a new way for businesses to reach their customers. With the help of social media, websites, and email marketing, small businesses have gained a lot of new customers. However, these new online customers have also opened up their businesses to a whole new world of cyber crime. Cyber crime is the illegal use of computers and networks to cause damage or steal information. This type of crime affects small businesses as well as large corporations. Small businesses often find themselves at a disadvantage because they don't have the resources to hire an ethical hacker or …

Study On Mechanical Mechanism Of Roof Fracture Evolution In Deep Stope With Variable Face Length, Wang Xinfeng, Lu Mingyuan

Coal Geology & Exploration

Irregular coal seam mining is easy to cause the problems such as roof stress concentration and abnormal ground pressure behavior. In order to explore the roof fracture law and the structural evolution characteristics of stope with variable length, the roof structure models with four types of boundary conditions were established and analyzed using the small-deflection thin plate bending theory in view of the geometric characteristics and mechanical causes of the abrupt stope with the inclined length of working face changing from small to large in various mining stages. Meanwhile, the roof fracture law and macro-mechanical response were analyzed by MATLAB …
