HIV-1 integrase (IN) has a noncatalytic function in virion maturation through its binding to the viral RNA genome (gRNA). Class II IN substitutions inhibit IN-gRNA binding and result in the formation of virions with aberrant morphologies marked by mislocalization of the gRNA between the capsid lattice and the lipid envelope. These viruses are noninfectious due to a block at an early reverse transcription stage in target cells. HIV-1 IN utilizes basic residues within its C-terminal domain (CTD) to bind to the gRNA; however, the molecular nature of how these residues mediate gRNA binding and whether other regions of IN are …

The Effect Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Milkweed Growth And Its Implications For Western Monarchs, Rylee Mattson, Estrella Silva, Katherine Klassen, Laurie Dizney Oct 2022

The Effect Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizae On Milkweed Growth And Its Implications For Western Monarchs, Rylee Mattson, Estrella Silva, Katherine Klassen, Laurie Dizney

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Western monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus plexippus) populations in the Pacific Northwest have decreased by approximately 99% in recent decades due in part to the destruction of milkweed (Asclepias spp.) habitat. Milkweeds are one of the only plant genera upon which monarchs will lay eggs and the larvae will feed, so milkweed habitat restoration is critical for the future survival and rehabilitation of western monarch butterfly populations. This research aimed to investigate the effect of the root symbiont arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) on growth for two species of milkweed native to Oregon’s Willamette Valley. In showy milkweed …

Using The Embl-Ebi Clustal Omega Tool To Calculate Diversity Of Heavy Chain Phage-Display Libraries, Michael Bodri, Shane A. Webb Oct 2022

Using The Embl-Ebi Clustal Omega Tool To Calculate Diversity Of Heavy Chain Phage-Display Libraries, Michael Bodri, Shane A. Webb

Georgia Journal of Science

Here we show that traditional Sanger sequencing combined with analysis tools available from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI), specifically EMBOSS Transeq and Clustal Omega, is extremely effective in the analysis of naïve phage display antibody libraries for the determination of library size and diversity. The free tools are easy to use and require little manipulation of reads by hand, allowing analysis to be performed on a standard personal computer. Utilization of this technique has applicability to researchers with limited access to deep sequencing. The primary drawback to this analysis methodology is that antibodies with particular molecular or …

Lessons Learned On Licensing Presentations From An On-Campus Student Research Symposium, Alexa Hight

All Things Open

In Spring 2022, a group of faculty and administrators came together to host a pilot Student Research Symposium, and the library was invited to participate in the planning process. The conference proceedings were published via the TAMU-CC Repository. Digital copies of all posters and presentation materials were also added to the Repository. Due to ongoing research and other concerns, in addition to an embargo option, students were given the option to make their work available only to authenticated campus users. Students were also able to choose a Creative Commons License for their work or choose traditional copyright. This led to …

Educational Leaders’ Attempts At Holding The Fort: A Transformative Endeavor In Lebanon, Layla Y. Itani, Nemr Freiha

School Leadership Review

Despite its small size, Lebanon has had its fair share of nationwide turbulences that further instigated conflict and instability among the Lebanese population. The crises have weighed heavily on the educational system in Lebanon and has impeded its operations on many fronts. However, educational leaders have attempted to adopt transformative practices in addressing the anticipated and unanticipated challenges. Educational leaders in Lebanon have learned to perceive that ‘the only constant is change,’ and have come to realize and acknowledge that their goals of enhancing educational experiences remain the same but the paths to achieve these goals are nonlinear.

Creating A Faith-Friendly School Culture In Religiously Plural Communities: A Neglected Facet Of Diversity, Peter E. Williams, Melissa Kates

School Leadership Review

School leaders serve religiously diverse communities, engaging with staff and parents from many backgrounds to address the academic and development needs of all children. While educator preparation often includes some instruction in cultural competence, religious diversity gets little attention. The purpose of this conceptual article is to provide guidance for school leaders to create a workplace and school culture hospitable to employees from all religious, spiritual, and non-religious backgrounds. Using Miller and Ewest’s (2015) Faith and Work Organizational framework, this article reviews findings from the management literature on workplace spirituality including the sparse empirical literature on religious expression in the …

Addressing Specific Safety And Occupational Health Challenges For The Canadian Mines Located In Remote Areas Where Extreme Weather Conditions Dominate, Rachid Halabi, Mustafa Kumral

Journal of Sustainable Mining

The number of mining operations is increasing in the Canadian North, where extreme weather conditions govern. Currently, many mine development projects are also in progress in this region. These mines’ working atmosphere and employment circumstances are highly different from regular mines. One of the main differences is the special safety issues of the Canadian North. The primary sources of these special issues are: the difficulty of finding skilled employees; high employee turnover rate; insufficient training and certification requirements; delicate employment circumstances affecting the psychological well-being of employees; permafrost; mine inspection challenges; inventory and logistic hardship; and the legislative and regulative …
