A Better Way: Using Richard Hooker's Notion Of 'Image Of God' To Work Through And Past Microaggressions In The Episcopal Church, Tamara J. Knowles
A Better Way: Using Richard Hooker's Notion Of 'Image Of God' To Work Through And Past Microaggressions In The Episcopal Church, Tamara J. Knowles
Doctor of Ministry
I claim behavior described as microaggressions can be mitigated via spiritual practices based in the virtue ethics of love of neighbor and intellectual humility. This is done using Richard Hooker's construct of the ‘image of God’, within his theological anthropology wherein the reason, will, appetite, and passions are kept in balance as they pursue perfection, understood as goodness, which is an expression of the divine and natural laws. Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy methodology to identify when these elements become too great in relation to the others affecting behavior maladaptively, we can seek a "reset" via a cognitive behavioral therapy approach. …
Elastomer O-Ring Seal Swell Measurements For Sustainable Aviation Fuel Material Compatibility, Conor J. Faulhaber
Elastomer O-Ring Seal Swell Measurements For Sustainable Aviation Fuel Material Compatibility, Conor J. Faulhaber
Honors Theses
As efforts continue to fight climate change by transitioning energy sources away from fossil fuels and towards renewable alternative, the commercial aviation sector finds itself at danger of falling behind in emissions reductions. To combat this, the best term opportunity to reduce the industry’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions has been identified as sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, derived from renewable feedstocks like agricultural waste or used cooking oil. Currently, SAF is regulated to a 50%v blending limit with conventional petroleum-based fuel to maintain certain jet fuel properties, including material compatibility with elastomer o-ring seals. When these seals come in …

How Do Consumers In General Evaluate, Judge, And Act Toward Shoplifting? The Moderating Effects Of Personal Characteristics And Motives, Juehui Shi, Ngoc Cindy Pham, Claudio Schapsis, Tofazzal Hossain, Arturo Z. Vasquez-Párraga
How Do Consumers In General Evaluate, Judge, And Act Toward Shoplifting? The Moderating Effects Of Personal Characteristics And Motives, Juehui Shi, Ngoc Cindy Pham, Claudio Schapsis, Tofazzal Hossain, Arturo Z. Vasquez-Párraga
American Business Review
Despite the seriousness of shoplifting, consumers’ evaluations, judgements, and intentions toward shoplifting remain underexplored by scholars from business ethics, marketing, retailing, and consumer behavior. We propose a new shoplifting ethics model, which integrates Hunt and Vitell’s theory of ethics with Nadeau, Rochlen, and Tyminski’s typology of shoplifting, by incorporating the moderators of consumers’ personal characteristics (i.e., age, gender, marital status, income) and shoplifting motives (i.e., social, experiential, economic, emotional) onto the relationships among deontological evaluation, teleological evaluation, ethical judgment, and intention. Based on a two-by-two randomized experimental design, two shoplifting cases (i.e., swapping price tags, stealing products) are investigated in …
Natural Disaster Impacts On U.S. Banks, James R. Barth, Stephen Matteo Miller, Yanfei Sun, Shen Zhang
Natural Disaster Impacts On U.S. Banks, James R. Barth, Stephen Matteo Miller, Yanfei Sun, Shen Zhang
American Business Review
We examine how natural disasters affect bank performance during the 2000-2017 period. The results suggest bank offices in affected counties raise loan rates more than deposit rates. However, we find that community banks, not non-community banks, drive the results, and by being located in disaster-prone areas, they contribute to helping communities recover from natural disasters without any evidence of price gouging. This contributes to higher returns on assets and net interest margins for community banks. Yet, the banks' resulting higher return on assets is not large enough that their offices in disaster-prone communities contribute to economically meaningful profits. Moreover, banks …

Applying Technology To Promote Sexual And Reproductive Health And Prevent Gender Based Violence For Adolescents In Low And Middle-Income Countries: Digital Health Strategies Synthesis From An Umbrella Review, Keng-Yen Huang, Manasi Kumar, Sabrina Cheng, Anya Elena Urcuyo, Paul Macharia
Brain and Mind Institute
Aim: Adolescents in low-and-middle-income countries (LMICs) are facing numerous developmental, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges including exposure to multidimensional violence. Gender-based violence (GBV) specifically intimate partner violence (IPV) are both highly prevalent in LMICs and are strongly linked with poor SRH outcomes. However, GBV and IPV interventions have not yet been adequately integrated in SRH due to individual, social, cultural, service, and resource barriers. To promote long-term SRH, a more holistic approach that integrates GBV and IPV, and adolescent development needs is imperative. Digital health has the potential to address multiple service setup, provision, and addressing access barriers through …
Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements
Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements
Postgraduate
The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. I propose a new test for disability representation to address these problems. I then apply the test described in this thesis to media texts within the spheres of film, television, fictional literature, comics and games. Using the qualitative method of autoethnography combined with discourse analysis, I will …

Patriarchy’S Link To Intimate Partner Violence: Applications To Survivors’ Asylum Claims, Daniel G. Saunders, Tina Jiwatram-Negrón, Natalie Nanasi, Iris Cardenas
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
Eligibility for asylum for survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) has recently been contested. We summarize social science evidence to show how such survivors generally meet asylum criteria. Studies consistently show a relationship between patriarchal factors and IPV, thereby establishing a key asylum criterion that women are being persecuted because of their status as women. Empirical support is also provided for other asylum criteria, specifically: patriarchal norms contribute to state actors’ unwillingness to protect survivors, and survivors’ political opinions are linked to an escalation of perpetrators’ violence. The findings have implications for policy reform and supporting individual asylum-seekers.

Pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by many co-morbidities, including impaired growth and development, CKD-mineral and bone disorder, anemia, dysregulated iron metabolism, and cardiovascular disease. In pediatric CKD cohorts, higher circulating concentrations of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) are associated with some of these adverse clinical outcomes, including CKD progression and left ventricular hypertrophy. It is hypothesized that lowering FGF23 levels will reduce the risk of these events and improve clinical outcomes. Reducing FGF23 levels in CKD may be accomplished by targeting two key stimuli of FGF23 production-dietary phosphate absorption and iron deficiency. Ferric citrate is approved for use …
Improvements To The Automatic Calibration Of Digital Focusing Color Schlieren Systems, Robert C. Frazee
Improvements To The Automatic Calibration Of Digital Focusing Color Schlieren Systems, Robert C. Frazee
LSU Master's Theses
As a diagnostic method, Schlieren imaging offers the unique ability to visualize flows with a completely non-intrusive method. By visualizing small changes in the refractive index of a fluid, Schlieren imaging is able to visualize changes in temperature, pressure, and composition. While historic Schlieren methods have been limited to providing largely qualitative information, modern Schlieren methods are able to extract quantitative information from flow phenomena. This is possible through either Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) or Digital Focusing Color Schlieren (DFCS) methods. While BOS is relatively flexible, it requires a large amount of computational effort to process each frame of captured …

Suppliers can grow sales by offering expanded solutions to specific, promising customer accounts via relationship expansion proposals. Extant perspectives offer conflicting advice on which accounts to target and how to price such proposals. The authors investigate how expansion proposals can be strategically targeted and designed to enhance supplier financial outcomes. A novel conceptual framework provides direction for targeted account growth based on three relationship metrics: sales potential, prior profitability, and service level. Two studies with a major industrial supplier assess the effects of relationship expansion proposals contingent on these three metrics. A quasi-experiment in Study 1 reveals that higher sales …
Beyond #Freebritney: A Legal Analysis Of The Conservatorship System In The United States, Ashleigh M. Zurek
Beyond #Freebritney: A Legal Analysis Of The Conservatorship System In The United States, Ashleigh M. Zurek
Northern Illinois University Law Review
In this article the author will explore the state of conservatorships in the United States and how, too often, individuals with disabilities are abused and taken advantage of in this structure. The author will discuss particular areas of conservatorship abuse, including: financial abuse, physical abuse, exploitation, and death. The author will then proceed to discuss potential solutions to curb conservatorship abuse and how best to improve the conservatorship system in the United States. Particular solutions discussed include: special needs trusts, federal legislation (past, current, and future), and supported decision-making.
Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith
Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith
Northern Illinois University Law Review
For decades, members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) engaged in a protracted campaign of corruption, terror, and violence against Black and brown Chicagoans. Intermittent efforts to reform or otherwise rein in the CPD invariably fell short. In late 2014, a CPD officer murdered a 17-year-old Chicagoan, Laquan McDonald. CPD officials and city leaders attempted to whitewash the killing as a justified use of deadly force, but—thanks to the work of local organizers and a national pressure campaign—McDonald’s death instead led to a yearlong investigation by the federal Department of Justice (DOJ). Ordinarily, such an investigation would have resulted in …
Unprotected But Not Forgotten: A Call To Action To Help Federal Judiciary Employees Address Workplace Sexual Misconduct, Theresa M. Green
Unprotected But Not Forgotten: A Call To Action To Help Federal Judiciary Employees Address Workplace Sexual Misconduct, Theresa M. Green
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
Federal judiciary employees are not currently protected by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964—the federal statute that prohibits workplace discrimination, retaliation, and harassment based on, among other things, a person’s sex. In effect, this means federal judiciary employees are not adequately protected from sexual misconduct. Like any workplace, however, sexual harassment is a persistent issue within the federal judiciary, and the current mechanisms to address the abuse are inadequate. This note_comment explores the federal judiciary’s sexual misconduct problem and critiques the only two mechanisms through which a federal judiciary employee can address workplace sexual harassment: the Judicial …
Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum
Unsexing Breastfeeding, Naomi Schoenbaum
Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)
For half a century, constitutional sex equality doctrine has been combating harmful sex stereotypes by invalidating laws that treat women as caregivers and men as breadwinners. Yet decades after the constitutional sex equality revolution unsexed parenting roles, one area of parenting has escaped this doctrine’s exacting gaze: breastfeeding. In the wake of public health efforts in the 1990s to promote breastfeeding, a raft of laws were enacted—from insurance coverage mandates under the Affordable Care Act to workplace accommodations under the Fair Labor Standards Act—that provide substantial breastfeeding protections and benefits, but only to women. Although the sexed law of breastfeeding …
