Bile acids, originally known to emulsify dietary lipids, are now established signalling molecules that regulate physiological processes. Signalling targets several proteins that include the ion channels involved in regulating intestinal motility and bile viscosity. Studies show that bile acids regulate the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) in cultured cell models and heterologous expression systems. ENaC plays both local and systemic roles in regulating extracellular fluids. Here we investigated whether bile acids regulate ENaC expressed in native tissues. We found that taurocholic acid and taurohyodeoxycholic acid regulated ENaC in both the distal nephron and distal colon. We also tested the hypothesis that …

Neoantigens are the key targets of antitumor immune responses from cytotoxic T cells and play a critical role in affecting tumor progressions and immunotherapy treatment responses. However, little is known about how the interaction between neoantigens and T cells ultimately affects the evolution of cancerous masses. Here, we develop a hierarchical Bayesian model, named neoantigen-T cell interaction estimation (netie) to infer the history of neoantigen-CD8

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic total gastrectomy (PTG) remains the only means of preventing gastric cancer for people with genetic mutations predisposing to Hereditary Diffuse Gastric Cancer (HDGC), mainly in the CDH1 gene. The small but growing cohort of people undergoing PTG at a young age are expected to have a life-expectancy close to the general population, however, knowledge of the long-term effects of, and monitoring requirements after, PTG is limited. This study aims to define the standard of care for follow-up after PTG.

METHODS: Through a combination of literature review and two-round Delphi consensus of major HDGC/PTG units and physicians, and patient …

Background

Immune exhaustion and senescence are dominant dysfunctional states of effector T cells and major hurdles for the success of cancer immunotherapy. In the current study, we characterized how acute myeloid leukemia (AML) promotes the generation of senescent-like CD8+ T cells and whether they have prognostic relevance.

METHODS

We analyzed NanoString, bulk RNA-Seq and single-cell RNA-Seq data from independent clinical cohorts comprising 1,896 patients treated with chemotherapy and/or immune checkpoint blockade (ICB).

Results

We show that senescent-like bone marrow CD8+ T cells were impaired in killing autologous AML blasts and that their proportion negatively correlated with overall survival …

Damage Monitoring Methods For Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Joints: A Review, Wencai Li, Genevieve Palardy

Faculty Publications

As the application of composite materials in structural parts continues to increase, so does the importance to monitor the structure's health condition during their entire service life. This paper presents a comprehensive review on damage monitoring methods focusing on fiber-reinforced polymer joints: adhesively bonded, mechanically fastened, and welded. In this review, structural health monitoring (SHM) methods are classified into two major groups: intrinsic sensing (embedded at the bond line) and extrinsic sensing (placed outside the interface). Main intrinsic techniques include fiber optic sensors, piezoelectric sensors (e.g., electromechanical impedance), and nanocomposite-based monitoring. The latter has attracted significant interest in the past …

Hierarchical Structure Of Yso Clusters In The W40 And Serpens South Region: Group Extraction And Comparison With Fractal Clusters, Jia Sun, Robert A. Gutermuth, Hongchi Wang, Shuinai Zhang, Min Long

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Young stellar clusters are believed to inherit the spatial distribution like hierarchical structures of their natal molecular cloud during their formation. However, the change of the structures between the cloud and the young clusters is not well constrained observationally. We select the W40–Serpens South region (∼7 × 9 pc2) of the Aquila Rift as a testbed and investigate hierarchical properties of spatial distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) in this region. We develop a minimum spanning tree (MST) based method to group stars into several levels by successively cutting down edges longer than an algorithmically determined critical value. …

Deep Near-Infrared Survey Towards The W40 And Serpens South Region In The Aquila Rift: A Comprehensive Catalogue Of Young Stellar Objects, Min Long

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Active star-forming regions are excellent laboratories for studying the origins and evolution of young stellar object (YSO) clustering. The W40–Serpens South region is such a region, and we compile a large near- and mid-infrared catalogue of point sources in it, based on deep near-infrared observations of Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) in combination with Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), and Spitzer catalogues. From this catalogue, we identify 832 YSOs, and classify 15, 135, 647, and 35 of them to be deeply embedded sources, Class I YSOs, Class II YSOs, and transition disc sources, respectively. In …

Design And Economic Analysis Of A Hydrokinetic Turbine For Household Applications, Carmen M. Puertas-Frías, Clinton S. Willson, Pablo A. García-Salaberri

Faculty Publications

Social and political concerns on climate change have made renewable energy an essential component of government's work plans. Grid-connected horizontal-axis hydrokinetic turbines are promising eco-friendly power sources for electrical energy supply to households near middle-to-high discharge rivers, while providing an opportunity to sell the energy surplus. In this work, a rotor design analysis of a hydrokinetic turbine with a 1 m nominal radius is performed based on blade element momentum theory. Then, an economic analysis is presented in terms of the discounted payback period and the internal rate of return. The numerical results show that three-bladed hydrokinetic turbines with a …

Subpredictor Approach For Event-Triggered Control Of Discrete-Time Systems With Input Delays, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang Nov 2022

Subpredictor Approach For Event-Triggered Control Of Discrete-Time Systems With Input Delays, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff, Corina Barbalata, Zhong Ping Jiang

Faculty Publications

We propose a new output event-triggered control design for linear discrete-time systems with constant arbitrarily long input delays, using delay compensating subpredictors. We prove input-to-state stability of the closed loop system, using framers and the theory of positive systems. A novel feature of our approach is our use of matrices of absolute values, instead of Euclidean norms, in our discrete-time event triggers for our delay compensating control design. We illustrate our approach using a model of the BlueROV2 marine vehicle, where our new event triggers lead to a smaller number of control recomputation times as compared with standard event triggers …

For me, it was a trip through the judgments of a master craftsman who could succinctly summarize the dispute before him; weigh the conflicting evidence; say what rang true and what did not; state the applicable law, often from first principles set in their historical and policy context; and end by saying who won and lost and what to do. Copyright law might be "over-strong", as he suggested in a 1996 lecture;14 but when he had to decide whether a TV documentary critical of cheque-book journalism could freely use another channel's footage to make its point, Laddie J. said his …

Hurricane Harvey in 2017 marked an important transition where many disaster victims used social media rather than the overloaded 911 system to seek rescue. This article presents a machine-learning-based detector of rescue requests from Harvey-related Twitter messages, which differentiates itself from existing ones by accounting for the potential impacts of ZIP codes on both the preparation of training samples and the performance of different machine learning models. We investigate how the outcomes of our ZIP code filtering differ from those of a recent, comparable study in terms of generating training data for machine learning models. Following this, experiments are conducted …

Private Inequity: Reform Rule 506 To Safely Accommodate Investment By Nonaccredited Investors, Allen C. Page

William & Mary Business Law Review

In 2012, Congress enacted Title III of the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act (the “JOBS Act”), which it named the Crowdfund Act, to create an exemption from registration under the Securities Act of 1933 that, in the words of President Barack Obama, would allow “ordinary Americans . . . to go online and invest in entrepreneurs that they believe in.” While perhaps well-intentioned in principle, Regulation Crowdfunding imposes material limitations and costs on the issuer, leading most issuers to conclude that the inclusion of unaccredited investors in a crowdfunding campaign is not worth the complexity and expense. Furthermore, the most …

Who Owns The Meme?: Establishing A Definitive Framework To Resolve Disputes In Social Media Account Ownership Between Employers And Employees, Tom Galvin Nov 2022

Who Owns The Meme?: Establishing A Definitive Framework To Resolve Disputes In Social Media Account Ownership Between Employers And Employees, Tom Galvin

William & Mary Business Law Review

The pervasive nature of social media and its growing impact on every aspect of society has created a novel issue: who owns a social media account, an employer or an employee, following the termination of the employment relationship? Courts thus far have produced an inconsistent and confusing legal terrain that will only continue to breed uncertainty amongst parties involved in disputes over social media account ownership. This Note examines the current jurisprudence, analyzes its strengths and weaknesses, proposes a definitive framework to determine ownership between the parties, and demonstrates that framework using the facts of an ongoing case. This framework …

Keeping Gates Down: Further Narrowing The Computer Fraud And Abuse Act In The Wake Of Van Buren, George F. Leahy

William & Mary Business Law Review

Internet-connected devices have become essential parts of personal and professional life. As these devices have grown in importance and prevalence in the workplace, so too have federal computer regulations come into the spotlight. Prior to the Supreme Court’s Decision in Van Buren v. United States, the Circuit Courts of Appeals were split on the interpretation of the “exceeds authorized access” clause of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA), a commonly invoked federal law that imposes criminal and civil liability for computer misuse. Although the Court’s narrow holding clarified the definition of “exceeds authorized access,” the Court did not …

Covid-19 & The Illinois Health Care Right Of Conscience Act: A Legal Analysis, Matthew Moustis Nov 2022

Covid-19 & The Illinois Health Care Right Of Conscience Act: A Legal Analysis, Matthew Moustis

Northern Illinois University Law Review

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people who refused to be vaccinated because of their religious or moral beliefs tried to use the Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act to block their employers' vaccination requirements. In response, some elected officials argued that the Act was being misinterpreted. They believed it was intended only to protect health care providers who refused to provide certain services to patients, not to allow people to avoid measures taken to ensure public health during a pandemic. Their interpretations were incorrect. The Illinois Health Care Right of Conscience Act was properly construed as a right to …

An Investigation On The Effects Of Psychological Contract (Pc) Towards Site Safety In The South Indian Construction Industry, M. G. Soundarya Priya, K. S. Anandh, Sathyanarayanan Rajendran, K. N. Sen

Engineering Technologies, Safety, and Construction Faculty Scholarship

The construction sector is India's second-largest industry, contributing to the country's economy and providing many job opportunities. However, construction has been described as a hazardous industry with a high rate of injuries, accidents, and fatalities compared to other sectors worldwide. The "psychological contract of safety (PCS)" is one of the safety climate (SC) variables that influence worker safety behavior (WSB) actions on construction sites to improve safety. This research investigates the influence of SC factors on PCS and PCS on WSB in construction site safety. A quantitative research method has been adopted in this study, and the data is collected …

Introduction: Acetaminophen is one of the most used anti-pyretics to mitigate fever. Few cases have been reported of hypersensitivity reactions to acetaminophen without non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intolerance. It is recommended that if there is suspected drug hypersensitivity then the patient should undergo an oral drug challenge. Case Description: A 49-year-old male presented for evaluation of urticaria that occurred with acetaminophen ingestion. He reported several episodes where he developed diffuse urticaria within 15 minutes of ingestion, but no other symptoms concerning for anaphylaxis. He was unsure of the dose. He also noted urticaria with Excedrin migraine, which contains acetaminophen, aspirin, …

Improving Fluid Management Of Extreme Premature Infants By Providing A Restrictive Fluid Management Algorithm In The Icn, Jacob S. Ward, Dena Hubbard, Nicholas Clark

Posters

Intro: Excessive fluid intake in extremely premature infants during the first week of life is known to increase risk of adverse events such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and overall mortality. There also is some correlation with the need for mechanical ventilation and development bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). While fluid restriction is recommended to decrease the likelihood of adverse outcomes, at our institution we found there was a wide variability in and lack of evidence-based standards on fluid management in this vulnerable population. We aimed to improve the fluid management of the extremely premature infants by standardizing a …

Limited Cognitive Ability May Reduce Snap Participation Among Older Adults, Colleen Heflin, Dongmei Zuo, Gabriella Alphonso

Population Health Research Brief Series

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is the largest food and nutrition assistance program in the U.S. For older adults currently on SNAP, meeting administrative requirements to remain on SNAP is difficult due to short recertification time frames, a lack of social support, and cognitive impairment. This brief summarizes results of a recent study examining the impact of cognitive decline on SNAP participation among adults aged 60 yrs. and older. Findings demonstrate that cognitive decline and living alone are associated with reduced SNAP participation, with older females being the most affected.

Time-Varying Rates Of Organic And Inorganic Mass Accumulation In Louisiana Marshes And Relation To Sea-Level Change, Sophie Vincent Nov 2022

Time-Varying Rates Of Organic And Inorganic Mass Accumulation In Louisiana Marshes And Relation To Sea-Level Change, Sophie Vincent

LSU Master's Theses

Louisiana wetlands are complex systems that require a continuous input of organic and inorganic material to keep pace with relative sea-level rise (RSLR). Marshes, specifically, rely on organic material to build soil volume and maintain surface elevation. Interannual-to-decadal sea-level anomalies induced by Earth's internal climate variability and atmospheric disturbances such as hurricanes can affect marsh accretion, mineral deposition, and plant productivity. Coastal restoration projects such as sediment diversions are in progress to mitigate land loss and increase availability of inorganic sediment to coastal wetlands. The goal of this project is to determine if organic mass accumulation rates in Louisiana marshes …

Football As Soft Power: The Political Use Of Football In Qatar, The United Arab Emirates And The Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia, Vitas Rafael Carosella

Abdou Filali-Ansary Occasional Paper Series

In November 2022 Qatar hosts the first Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region FIFA World Cup. This paper seeks to understand the use of football as a soft power political tool in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Based on culture, values and policies, soft power is power through attraction as opposed to coercion. The stronger one player’s values, culture and policies are, the more soft power that player has. Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, traditional fossil fuel-based states, suffer from a lack of attraction. By investing in football, each nation hopes …
