Intersections on Inclusion: Critical Conversations about the Academy

In 2020, USU received the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement, recognizing USU has great work to do in our communities; as a land grant institution we have the responsibility to the communities in which we are located to honor the mission statement of ‘serving the public through learning, discovery, and engagement and cultivating diversity of thought and culture.’ This panel will center the voices of community leaders and change-makers dedicated to advancing progress toward equity. As we learn from panelists about their community initiatives and advocacy, participants will be invited to reflect on ways they can engage in their …

Residual Properties Of Silicone (Med-4719) Lead With Leads From Retrieved Devices, Anmar Salih, Tarun Goswami Nov 2022

Residual Properties Of Silicone (Med-4719) Lead With Leads From Retrieved Devices, Anmar Salih, Tarun Goswami

Biomedical, Industrial & Human Factors Engineering Faculty Publications

Leads are designed for in vivo applications, however, for a definite period of time. In-vivo environment affects the mechanical behavior of implantable devices, therefore, there is a need to evaluate the residual properties of implantable leads used with pacemakers, defibrillator and neuro-stimulators. Silicone (MED-4719) lead is widely used in cardiac implantable electronic devices made by different manufacturers. . We collected 150 devices (with or without leads) from Anatomical Gift Program of the Wright State University. The objective of this study was to investigate the residual properties of Silicone (MED-4719) lead with different in vivo exposure time and compare the properties …

Embedding Inclusive Excellence In An Academic Library: Strategic Planning & Infrastructure Considerations, Ione T. Damasco Nov 2022

Embedding Inclusive Excellence In An Academic Library: Strategic Planning & Infrastructure Considerations, Ione T. Damasco

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

While many of our libraries have issued public statements declaring a commitment to greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), many of us have struggled with how to move beyond words to enacting sustained, anti-oppressive actions. We will look at one library that used a multi-pronged, stepped approach to embed inclusive excellence as a framework in every department. Inclusive excellence recognizes an institution’s ability to succeed is dependent upon how fully it values, engages, and includes the rich diversity of each of its members. First, the library formalized its diversity committee, developing a charge and requiring representation from each department. Second, …

The Mid‑Pleistocene Transition: A Delayed Response To An Increasing Positive Feedback?, Anne Willem Omta, Peter Thomas

Faculty Scholarship

Glacial–interglacial cycles constitute large natural variations in Earth’s climate. The Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) marks a shift of the dominant periodicity of these climate cycles from ∼40 to ∼100 kyr. Recently, it has been suggested that this shift resulted from a gradual increase in the internal period (or equivalently, a decrease in the natural frequency) of the system. As a result, the system would then have locked to ever higher multiples of the external forcing period. We find that the internal period is sensitive to the strength of positive feedbacks in the climate system. Using a carbon cycle model in which …

Grafting Of Short Elastin-Like Peptides Using An Electric Field, Nuttanit Pramounmat, Sogol Asaei, Jacob D. Hostert, Horst A. Von Recum, Julie N. Renner Nov 2022

Grafting Of Short Elastin-Like Peptides Using An Electric Field, Nuttanit Pramounmat, Sogol Asaei, Jacob D. Hostert, Horst A. Von Recum, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Surface-grafted elastin has found a wide range of uses such as sensing, tissue engineering and capture/release applications because of its ability to undergo stimuli-responsive phase transition. While various methods exist to control surface grafting in general, it is still difficult to control orientation as attachment occurs. This study investigates using an electric field as a new approach to control the surface-grafting of short elastin-like polypeptide (ELP). Characterization of ELP grafting to gold via quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, atomic force microscopy and temperature ramping experiments revealed that the charge/hydrophobicity of the peptides, rearrangement kinetics and an applied electric field impacted …

Gardner-Webb Team Serves Families At Give Kids The World Village, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Over fall break, seven students and three adults representing Gardner-Webb University volunteered at Give Kids the World Village (GKTWV) in Orlando, Fla. Each child who comes to the Village is dealing with a terminal or chronic illness. Eligible children are paired with one of over 250 partnering wish-granting organizations from around the world, such as Make-A-Wish. They and their families receive a weeklong, cost-free vacation at the nonprofit 89-acre resort. They also receive free admission to nearby attractions, such as Disney World and Universal Studios.

Adding Gene Transcripts Into Genomic Prediction Improves Accuracy And Reveals Sampling Time Dependence., Bruno C Perez, Marco C A M Bink, Karen L. Svenson, Gary Churchill, Mario P L Calus

Faculty Research 2022

Recent developments allowed generating multiple high-quality 'omics' data that could increase the predictive performance of genomic prediction for phenotypes and genetic merit in animals and plants. Here, we have assessed the performance of parametric and nonparametric models that leverage transcriptomics in genomic prediction for 13 complex traits recorded in 478 animals from an outbred mouse population. Parametric models were implemented using the best linear unbiased prediction, while nonparametric models were implemented using the gradient boosting machine algorithm. We also propose a new model named GTCBLUP that aims to remove between-omics-layer covariance from predictors, whereas its counterpart GTBLUP does not do …

Rural Teacher Attitudes And Engagement With Computing And Technology, Melissa P. Mendenhall, Colby Tofel-Grehl, David Feldon Nov 2022

Rural Teacher Attitudes And Engagement With Computing And Technology, Melissa P. Mendenhall, Colby Tofel-Grehl, David Feldon

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The purpose of this sequential Case Study-Mixed Methods research is to explore rural teacher attitudes toward, approaches to, and engagement with making and computational thinking during STEM professional development and co-teaching learning experiences. Specifically, we examine the professional learning needs of two rural, middle school teachers as they engage technology. Using the lens of cultural historical activity theory, this paper examines the ways in which teacher attitude about computing shifted throughout professional learning and instructional practice. Findings show three broad themes that emerge surrounding teacher attitudes, approaches, and engagement with technology: Anxiety, Independent Learner, and Integration. Additionally, findings suggest that …

Evaluation Of Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics, And Methane And Co2 Emissions Of Growing And Finishing Cattle Raised In Extensive Or Partial-Intensive Cow-Calf Production Systems, Zachary E. Carlson, Levi J. Mcphillips, Rick R. Stowell, Galen E. Erickson, Mary E. Drewnoski, Jim C. Macdonald

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

An experiment was conducted over 2 yr to measure performance and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of weaned calves from two cow-calf production systems. Crossbred steers and heifers (n = 270, initial body weight (BW) = 207 kg, SD = 35) were used in a randomized complete block design, with treatments applied to the cow-calf system. Treatments were: 1) a traditional system consisting of April to June calving with smooth bromegrass pasture and grazed corn residue as forage resources (TRAD); 2) an alternative system consisting of July to September calving utilizing partial-drylot feeding, summer-planted oats, and corn residue grazing (ALT). …
