User Interface Mitigation Of Display Artifacts During Transitions Between Display Clock Speeds, Jyothi Karri, Chien-Hui Wen
User Interface Mitigation Of Display Artifacts During Transitions Between Display Clock Speeds, Jyothi Karri, Chien-Hui Wen
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes techniques for user interface (UI) mitigation of a display artifact that occurs when a display transitions between a high speed (HS) mode and a normal speed (NS) mode. The display may be implemented in a mobile device that supports multiple refresh rates. To conserve power, the mobile device may alter a refresh rate and clock speed of the display from a first refresh rate and clock speed in the HS mode to a second refresh rate and clock speed in the NS mode. Using the techniques described herein, the transition between the HS and NS modes coincides …
The Addition And Cessation Of Inorganic Fertiliser Amendments In Long-Term Managed Grasslands: Impacts On Above And Below-Ground Communities, C. D. Clegg, P. J. Murray, R. Cook, T. Tallec
The Addition And Cessation Of Inorganic Fertiliser Amendments In Long-Term Managed Grasslands: Impacts On Above And Below-Ground Communities, C. D. Clegg, P. J. Murray, R. Cook, T. Tallec
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In recent times, land use in the United Kingdom has undergone considerable changes because of social and economic pressures, leading to a fine balance between the demands of highly productive intensive systems and practices which are perceived to be more environmentally acceptable. Plant productivity is governed by the supply of nutrients from the soil, which in turn is dependent on the dynamics of organic matter decomposition driven by soil micro-, meso- and macro fauna. Considerable information is available concerning the impact of inorganic fertiliser additions on communities of macro-fauna and flora, but the effects on specific microbial communities in soils …

Benomyl Effects On Plant Productivity Through Arbuscular Mycorrhiza Restriction In A Greek Upland Grassland, M. Orfanoudakis, A. P. Mamolos, F. Karanika, D. S. Veresoglou
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Interactions between plants and microbes are important for plant community structure. Many plants establish symbioses with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which play a central role in soil fertility, plant nutrition and the maintenance of stability and biodiversity within plant communities by improving uptake of nutrients and water. AM fungi can improve growth/performance in a variety of plant species by influencing intra- and interspecific competition of neighbouring plants and thus regulate coexistence and diversity in mixed communities. The aim was to study AMF effects on plant productivity and diversity in Greek upland grasslands.
40 Years Of Studies On The Relationships Between Grass Species, N Turnover And Nutrient Cycling In The Lamto Reserve In The Ivory Coast (Côte D’Ivoire), L. Abbadie, J. C. Lata
40 Years Of Studies On The Relationships Between Grass Species, N Turnover And Nutrient Cycling In The Lamto Reserve In The Ivory Coast (Côte D’Ivoire), L. Abbadie, J. C. Lata
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Lamto Station, dominated by grass savannas, was created in 1963. Among other problems, the relationships between savanna grasses (mainly Andropogoneae supertribe) and nutrient cycling, mainly nitrogen (N), have been intensively studied. Such grass systems are of major interest. Savannas represent 25% of terrestrial biomes and are second to tropical forests in the contribution to terrestrial primary production and are predominant in African social and economic environments. The Andropogoneae grasses are of particular interest for pastures. Second, savannas are generally extremely nutrient-poor, especially for N, which often limits productivity. Third, little is known about possible controls of grasses on N …

Cycling Of N And P In Grass-Alone (Brachiaria) And Mixed Grass/Legume (Brachiaria/ Desmodium Ovalifolium) Grazed Pastures In The Atlantic Forest Region Of Brazil, R. M. Boddey, R. Tarré, R. Macedo, C. De P. Rezende, J. M. Pereira, B. J. R. Alves, S. Urquiaga
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
There are estimated to be > 80 M ha of Brachiaria pastures in the tropical regions of Brazil. When continuously grazed with only modest fertiliser inputs (and no N) these pastures can maintain reasonable cattle weight gains (> 200 kg LWG/ha per year). However, without fertiliser and when overgrazed, LWGs fall rapidly to low levels. Recent studies have shown that N and P deficiency are the most important factors limiting productivity. The objective of this study was to study fluxes of N and P in the pasture system in order to understand resilience to poor management and minimum nutrient requirements to …
Estimating Nitrogen Fixation By Pastures On A Regional Or Continental Scale, Murray Unkovich
Estimating Nitrogen Fixation By Pastures On A Regional Or Continental Scale, Murray Unkovich
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
With fertiliser N inputs dramatically increasing in Australia in recent years (Angus, 2001), regional and continental scale estimates of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) are now required for assessing the risks of terrestrial and surface water eutrophication, groundwater contamination, and gaseous N emissions.
Integrating Below-Ground Ecology Into Sustainable Grassland Management, R. D. Bardgett
Integrating Below-Ground Ecology Into Sustainable Grassland Management, R. D. Bardgett
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Key points
1. Grasslands produce soils that sustain an abundant and diverse soil food web, providing tremendous opportunity for below-ground interactions to influence nutrient cycling processes and plant production.
2. Fast developing areas of ecological science offer scope to harness positive outcomes of below-ground ecology for enhancing efficient cycling of nutrients in sustainable grassland systems.

The Influence Of Burning On Soil Microbial Biomass And Activity Along The Boro Route In The Okavango Delta Of Botswana, Tabo Mubyana-John, A. Banda
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The Okavango Delta, a protected area in northeastern Botswana because of its annual flooding pattern, is the main source of water in an otherwise arid environment with a high diversity of plants and animals and forms the main tourist area in the region. However, the area is under threat from range fires. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of fire on soil microbial activity, biomass C, fungal population and diversity, and some soil properties along the Boro route of the Okavango Delta (Botswana).

The Benefits Of Animal-Assisted Therapy In A Nursing Care Facility, Cheydan Crump
The Benefits Of Animal-Assisted Therapy In A Nursing Care Facility, Cheydan Crump
Scholars Week
±Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is a goal directed therapy in which animals, specifically dogs, are utilized in order to reach a variety of patient-oriented goals and outcomes. Research has shown that AAT is beneficial in aiding a patient in achieving both their emotional and physical goals or needs. Thus, evidence has shown that AAT is useful in the achievement of optimal patient outcomes. However, while evidence supports the notion that AAT would be beneficial if regularly implemented within a patient’s care, few facilities utilize this therapy on a semi-regular basis. Therefore, the purpose of this project is to further acknowledge the …

Implementation Of Simulation Training For Newly Graduated Nurses, Lauren Hancock, Kurstin Martin
Scholars Week
Regardless of educational opportunities it is impossible to see every possible clinical situation necessary to develop adequate clinical judgment, before graduation. For this reason, we believe that simulation trainings should be implemented for newly graduated nurses upon their hiring.
Implementing The Option For 8-Hour Shifts Compared To 12-Hour Shifts To Protect The Well-Being Of Nurses And Patients, Savannah G. Bison, Madison R. Harden
Implementing The Option For 8-Hour Shifts Compared To 12-Hour Shifts To Protect The Well-Being Of Nurses And Patients, Savannah G. Bison, Madison R. Harden
Scholars Week
This project addresses the negative aspects of twelve hour shifts within the nursing profession and how a change to eight hour shifts leads to decreased burnout, increased job satisfaction, and a more positive work-life balance. The term ‘nursing shortage’ is often improperly used to imply only a deficit in registered nurses across the country; however, it is instead due to practicing nurses leaving the profession before retirement, especially in bedside positions. Nurses are searching for different paths for multiple reasons, but a common factor among all of them is burnout caused by the current system in place. This project addresses …

“You Can Be Anything You Want": An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Early Childhood Literature, Emily Marshall
“You Can Be Anything You Want": An Analysis Of Gender Roles In Early Childhood Literature, Emily Marshall
Scholars Week
The theme of gender roles is something that shows up in every work of literature. In early children’s literature, the vast majority of these stories portray the most common gender stereotypes, such as girls wearing pink and playing with dolls, while boys are wearing blue and playing with cars and trucks. The families’ roles are also seen in these books. For example, the mother figure is usually seen staying at home with the children and working in the kitchen or outside in the garden, while the father is often portrayed coming home from a long day of work in a …

Effect Of Awareness Of Government Initiatives On Financial Inclusion: A Study Of Domestic Workers In The City Of Bengaluru, Kiran Hiremath, Shalini R
Effect Of Awareness Of Government Initiatives On Financial Inclusion: A Study Of Domestic Workers In The City Of Bengaluru, Kiran Hiremath, Shalini R
Journal of International Women's Studies
A key assumption in economics is that economic growth brings prosperity to all sections of the society in an equitable manner. Historically, economic growth is not associated with equitable distribution of wealth. Governments all over the world make policies and implement them to engineer an equitable distribution of wealth. Financial exclusion is the single most important factor which can keep poorer sections of the society away from the benefits of economic growth. Financial inclusion creates a window of opportunity for poor sections of society to take part in the economic prosperity brought in by economic growth. A financially inclusive society …
Women's Empowerment, Mindfulness, And Role Of Women In Eradicating Alcohol And Drug Addiction From Indian Society, Ranjit Singha, Yogesh Kanna S
Women's Empowerment, Mindfulness, And Role Of Women In Eradicating Alcohol And Drug Addiction From Indian Society, Ranjit Singha, Yogesh Kanna S
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women’s empowerment and self-help groups are functional and successful in India in most instances; it is possible to improve them further by incorporating quality parameters in the various training programs. Most of the locally organized skill-training by different empowerment cells operates effectively. Training and operating procedures must be devised to ensure that self-help groups meet international standards for their products. The training is often held in remote locations, making it difficult for the facilitator to visit and provide instruction. There must be established criteria for selecting trainers and a planned curriculum for training. There is a social impediment in the …
Why Mentoring Is Essential In Creating Support Systems For Women, Julie Sunil
Why Mentoring Is Essential In Creating Support Systems For Women, Julie Sunil
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article focuses on exploring whether mentoring programs for women can speed the process of bridging the gender gap. Several measures have been taken in the past to ensure that gender equality in the workplace and society is practiced at the grass-roots level. However, the problems encountered during such an exercise may be compounded by the women’s own attitudes towards their place in the social hierarchy and their potential as well as their assessment of other women. This paper, based on a literature review, explores the prevailing attitude of women towards other women and their right to employment. When few …

The Politics Of Representating Dalit Women: A Study Of The Newspaper Khabar Lahariya And The Documentary Writing With Fire, Harishma Hari K, Khamarunnisa P. A
Journal of International Women's Studies
Redefining power is the only means to redress the gender bias that women have had to endure in a male-dominated society. As Héléne Cixous declared in “The Laugh of the Medusa” (1975), “écriture feminine” (or women’s writing) is the only way to emphasize women’s perspectives and end stereotyping of women and their opinions in literature. Such ideas helped to transform the representation of women in literature. This transformation is required not only in the literary world, but there is also an urgent need for the realistic representation of women in every section of society. Media being a powerful tool has …

The Ripple Effect Of Terror: Escalating The Rules Of Patriarchal Conformity Upon The Psyche Of Women In The Oleander Girl, Chitra Susan Thampy, Pauline V N
Journal of International Women's Studies
Women continue to be deprived of their right to live independently and within acceptable boundaries. Indian women frequently take up the responsibilities of preservers of culture and tradition. They are constrained by an excessive number of laws and regulations, most of which are justified in the name of customs and religion. The patriarchal power that is inherent in Indian society shapes how they experience the Indian value system. In the case of the lives of women in the diaspora, due to their struggles with the financial and psychological uncertainties of exile, the responsibilities of family and career, and the claims …

Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari
Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari
Journal of International Women's Studies
Using a Foucauldian perspective on power and resistance, this paper traces the history of oppositional movements founded by Iranian women to bring about fundamental social and political change during President Mohammad Khatami’s second administration (2001-2005). Denied the political rights, freedoms and opportunities available to oppositional groups operating in Western democratic countries, these feminist movements adopted a radically new strategy for winning social and political rights grounded in an everyday politics of social negation and social subversion of the status quo played out in urban public spaces. Referred to here as “presence-as-resistance,” this strategy constituted an everyday mode of opposition involving …

Staying Engaged While Staying Home?: Service-Learning, Writing, And Covid-19, Christopher Iverson
Staying Engaged While Staying Home?: Service-Learning, Writing, And Covid-19, Christopher Iverson
The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE
As an approach to writing instruction that has traditionally required students to engage in in-person community projects, service-learning has also traditionally involved risks. For example, students engaging in service-learning without proper support often do not approach community partners with the appropriate respect, and when university stakeholders fail to make clear what their side can offer in a partnership, they can leave community partners in the lurch when the semester ends and students finish their community-engaged coursework. These risks can be mitigated through education and reflection for instructors and students alike. The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing social distancing orders, however, left …
High-Impact Learning Experiences And Post-Graduate Outcomes: Exploring The Influence On Employment, Continuing Education And Salary, Alison Handy Twang
High-Impact Learning Experiences And Post-Graduate Outcomes: Exploring The Influence On Employment, Continuing Education And Salary, Alison Handy Twang
The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE
With the cost of college on the rise, and students increasingly viewing college as a pathway to a successful career, colleges and universities are under increasing pressure to demonstrate evidence of their effectiveness. High-impact learning experiences, such as internships, study abroad, service-learning, capstones and undergraduate research, have emerged as a promising practice to enhance student development during college; however, few studies have examined the impact of such practices on post-graduate indicators of success. This paper adds to our understanding of the benefits of high-impact learning by examining their influence on student post-graduate employment, continuing education and starting salary. The data …

Chemical Components And Effects On Soil Quality In Temperate Grazed Pasture Systems, M. H. Beare, D. Curtin, S. Thomas, P. M. Fraser, G. S. Francis
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Key points
1. Legume/grass pastures retain feedbacks on N supply that may help to reduce losses of N to the wider environment.
2. Intensive use of N fertilisers tends to increase SOM turnover and increase losses of N to the environment.
3. Increased use of fertilisers has contributed little to soil organic matter storage in grazed pastoral systems.
