Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Androgen deprivation therapies aimed to target prostate cancer (PrCa) are only partially successful given the occurrence of neuroendocrine PrCa (NEPrCa), a highly aggressive and highly metastatic form of PrCa, for which there is no effective therapeutic approach. Our group has demonstrated that while absent in prostate adenocarcinoma, the αVβ3 integrin expression is increased during PrCa progression toward NEPrCa. Here, we show a novel pathway activated by αVβ3 that promotes NE differentiation (NED). This novel pathway requires the expression of a GPI-linked surface molecule, NgR2, also known as Nogo-66 receptor homolog 1. We show here that NgR2 is upregulated by αVβ3, …

Ethical Analytics: A Framework For A Practically-Oriented Sub-Discipline Of Ai Ethics, Jonathan Boardman Nov 2022

Ethical Analytics: A Framework For A Practically-Oriented Sub-Discipline Of Ai Ethics, Jonathan Boardman

Doctor of Data Science and Analytics Dissertations

Ethics can no longer be regarded as an add-on in data science and analytics. This dissertation argues for the necessity of formalizing a new, practically-oriented sub-discipline of AI Ethics by outlining needs, highlighting shortcomings in current approaches, and providing a framework for Ethical Analytics, a field concerned with the study of the ethical issues surrounding the development, deployment, and/or dissemination of ML/AI systems and data science research, as well as the development of tools and procedures to mitigate ethical harms. While data science and machine learning are primarily concerned with data from start to finish, ethical analytics is concerned primarily …

Examining Student Adherence Within A Cover-Copy-Compare Intervention, Kaytlin Ann Nelson Nov 2022

Examining Student Adherence Within A Cover-Copy-Compare Intervention, Kaytlin Ann Nelson

Theses - ALL

The Cover-Copy-Compare intervention is a self-management strategy developed to improve students’ academic performance, particularly in the area of spelling. In academic intervention research, it is often assumed that students are completing an intervention as intended, yet this is seldom examined during intervention implementation or subsequent data analysis. The aim of this study was to retrospectively examine students’ Cover-Copy-Compare permanent products to assess their ability to adhere to the intervention and to examine whether intervention adherence influences intervention effectiveness. Data for the present study were selected from two larger randomized control trials that examined the efficacy of the Cover-Copy-Compare intervention on …

Differential Expression And Activities Of Cytochrome P450 3a In The Rat Brain Microsomes And Mitochondria, Nouf Alshammari, Devaraj Venkatapura Chandrashekar, Mamunur Rashid, Reza Mehvar Nov 2022

Differential Expression And Activities Of Cytochrome P450 3a In The Rat Brain Microsomes And Mitochondria, Nouf Alshammari, Devaraj Venkatapura Chandrashekar, Mamunur Rashid, Reza Mehvar

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Midazolam (MDZ), a benzodiazepine derivative, is metabolized to 1′- and 4-hydroxylated metabolites (1′-OH-MDZ and 4-OH-MDZ, respectively) by cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A). The purpose of this study was to investigate the CYP3A-mediated hydroxylation of MDZ in the rat brain mitochondria (MT). Brain microsomes (MC) and MT fractions were prepared from rats (n = 8) using differential and density gradient centrifugations, and the purity of the fractions was evaluated using VDAC1 and calreticulin as markers of MT and MC, respectively. The formation rates of 1′-OH-MDZ and 4-OH-MDZ in the rat brain MC and MT samples were determined using an LC–MS/MS method …

The Failing Congressional Response To The Missing And Murdered Indigenous Persons Crisis, Sarah Brody Nov 2022

The Failing Congressional Response To The Missing And Murdered Indigenous Persons Crisis, Sarah Brody

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons (MMIP) crisis today is a continuation of the centuries of violence against Indigenous people that continues into the present. The injustice facing Indigenous communities today is sustained by the legacy of colonialism. Indigenous communities and individuals are here despite atrocities like genocide, land dispossession, forced displacement, forced removal of children, and sexual violence. The United States government continues to perpetuate this violence against indigenous peoples by passing insufficiently funded half-measures to address the MMIP crisis.
