Clinical trials and experimental observations have shown that B cells are essential for development of T cell-mediated organ-specific autoimmunity, although their exact contribution is not clear. As antigen presentation by B cells is focused on antigens cognate to their antigen receptors, we reasoned that B cells would facilitate activation of T effector cells (Teff) with the same antigen specificity but would poorly activate regulatory T cells (Treg) due to insufficient presence of antigen-specific Tregs among polyclonal/multispecific Tregs at the early stages of pathogenesis. This Article makes an argument that should be obvious. The best way for governments to right the wrongs of cannabis prohibition is to give money to people with cannabis offenses. Nonetheless, this straightforward reform has been consistently overlooked, dismissed, or minimized by policymakers and scholars alike, eschewed in favor of other social equity programs that do not right those wrongs nearly as effectively. Governments have indeed invested hundreds of millions of cannabis tax dollars in social equity licensing programs and community reinvestment initiatives. These programs—while often worthwhile—do not benefit the vast majority of people with past cannabis offenses.

Resolving Bankruptcy's Non-Voting Impaired Class Issue Using The Nonfactor Solution, Jacob Harrington

In chapter 11 bankruptcy voting procedures, the issue of non-voting impaired classes can be a complicated issue, but the Southern District of Texas’s new “nonfactor” approach can be used as a lens through which different solutions to this issue may be understood. The United States Bankruptcy Code states that a bankruptcy plan may only be confirmed if every impaired class votes to accept the plan. But despite the statute’s apparent clarity, different jurisdictions’ solutions vary, some deeming non-voting impaired classes to plan. Adjudicating 35 U.S.C. § 112(A): The "Person Of Ordinary Skill In The Art" Conundrum And How To Address It, Matthew T. Simmons

A viable alternative for adjudicating issues under 35 U.S.C. § 112(a) of the Patent Act is needed due to the difficulties of trying these issues to a lay jury. Congress agreed when it enacted the America Invents Act (“AIA”), which created alternative proceedings for challenging patent validity post-grant, including post-grant review (“PGR”) and inter partes review (“IPR”). In theory, PGR proceedings permit the Patent Trial and Appeal Board of the United States Patent and Trademark Office to adjudicate whether one or more claims of a patent are valid on § 112 grounds. The age of climate change is upon us, but regulations and programs intended to decarbonize the electricity sector have been effectively stymied by utilities defending their monopoly power. The lack of robust antitrust enforcement against the utilities to date is a result of the belief that regulation is sufficient to police monopoly anticompetitive activity, that the natural monopoly structure of utilities makes them a poor fit for antitrust principles, and that the utilities are immune from Sherman Act claims under the state action exemption. Fifty years ago, the U.S. embarked on a radical new path. Under pressure from the environmental movement, Congress passed an array of statutes aimed at regulating carcinogens out of our world. This regulatory experiment sprawled from air and water to food and consumer products.

Legal scholars have paid scant attention to this wave of cancer regulation despite its size and importance and the public’s apparent interest in avoiding carcinogens. The National Water Model (NWM) provides operational streamflow forecasts for 2.7 million stream reaches across the continental United States, yet technical barriers prevent widespread public access to this hydrological infrastructure. This paper presents RIVR (River Information Visualization and Risk), a cross-platform mobile application that transforms National Water Model forecasts into an accessible interface for non-technical users. Built with Flutter, the application deploys to iOS and Android from a single codebase and integrates NOAA forecast APIs, CIROH return-period thresholds, and interactive vector-tile mapping. Language that includes race-evasive frames is used by White individuals to maintain a status quo wherein White individuals hold greater access to societal power and resources than people of color. Race-evasive frames include abstract liberalism, naturalization, cultural racism, and disconnected power-analysis. In higher education, use of race evasive frames has been primarily documented in White college students and White faculty members. This study addressed in a gap in the literature related to race evasion in White student affairs professionals. Student affairs professionals provide direct support to college students. Despite the strong commitment of European countries to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the extent to which key policies and drivers jointly shape emissions dynamics remains insufficiently investigated. To fill this gap, the study investigates the combined effects of the circular economy, energy transition, emissions trading systems, carbon tax, and digitalization on carbon reduction in the EU member states. Using annual data from 2000 to 2023, the analysis integrates causal discovery, time-varying dependence modeling, and machine learning methods to unravel system-level causal structure, dynamic connectedness, and future emission trajectories. Background/aim: Tumor budding (TB) and poorly differentiated clusters (PDCs) are histopathological parameters that have been associated with poor prognosis in various malignancies, particularly colorectal carcinoma. Although numerous studies have demonstrated an association between the microcystic, elongated, and fragmented (MELF) pattern in endometrial carcinomas and lymphovascular invasion as well as lymph node metastasis, the literature regarding TB and PDCs in this context remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the potential associations of the MELF pattern, TB, and PDCs with overall survival, progression-free survival, and clinicopathological parameters in cases of endometrioid endometrial carcinoma (EEC).

New Arrivals Trust In Government In Country Of Origin And Chicago, Connor W. Wood, Anna E. Bullock, Cristian L. Paredes

Sociology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Trust in government refers to individuals’ willingness to place confidence in governing institutions. This research brief examines whether new arrivals trust government both in their countries of origin and in the City of Chicago. Using descriptive statistics from the 2025 New Arrivals/Asylum Seeker Survey Project, the study compares reported levels of trust across these two contexts. The findings show that most respondents distrusted governments in their countries of origin—suggesting distrust as a key push factor—while expressing substantially higher trust in Chicago’s government, highlighting the city’s role as a sanctuary city.
