I was not familiar with the concept of liminality before walking the Camino de Santiago (Camino Français) for the first time in 2000. ‘Liminal’ is a Latin word for a doorway. It is the ‘threshold’ or, literally, ‘the-rush-hold’. This paper explores liminality as an in-between space when we are no longer ‘here’ but not yet ‘there’. It is a time when we can take stock, review, remember, and re-frame. That’s a gift of pilgrimage; away from the familiar, away from routines and day-to day responsibilities: an in-between time. Within Islam generally, and Sufism in particular, journeying (safar) takes on a great importance. From the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj) to the vertical night journey (almiraj), the well-trodden path (shari’ah) to the narrow path (tariqa), there are many kinds of journeying, all of which are ultimately understood as being in the path of Allah (fi sabillillah). Aotearoa / New Zealand has a history of colonisation with a significant destructive impact on Mãori, the indigenous people. It is only in more recent decades that this history has become more widely ‘remembered’ by the non-Māori population, in large part due to efforts made by Māori activists, scholars and legislators. The growing awareness of this difficult history is often met with a mixture of bewilderment and anger. This paper explores the spiritual dimensions of Celtic pilgrimage through a comparative analysis of two journeys: the Celtic Camino, primarily known as the English Way to Santiago, in Galicia, Spain, and the pilgrimage to Queen Maeve’s Cairn in Sligo, Ireland. It examines how invented traditions and mythological narratives contribute to a sense of ancestral connection and spiritual homecoming. The study employs autoethnographic narrative and theoretical frameworks including Simon Coleman’s concept of laterality and Jenny Butler’s observations on neo-pagan re-sacralisation of the landscape. Looking at the life of St. Francis of Assisi (1181/2–1226) through the lens of liminality can help to understand this complex figure. Anthropologist Victor Turner, for example, has explored Francis’s embrace of poverty as a means of experiencing liminality and the communitas that accompanies it. Three episodes in the life of Francis in particular constitute liminal experiences in that Francis left behind old ways of being, crossed thresholds, and experienced transformation: his encounter with lepers, his renunciation of possessions and coinciding embrace of poverty, and his encounter with Sultan Malik al-Kamil. For the past decade, I have been studying pilgrimage in all its dimensions in what my colleagues and I have been calling a kaleidoscopic inquiry (McIntosh et al., 2024). In my current investigations, I have been exploring the journey of the soul upon the death of its host. My focus in this working paper is the myths and traditions of the Yolngu Indigenous peoples of northeast Arnhemland in remote northern Australia with whom I lived and worked in the 1980s and 90s. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as sources of health advice, raising urgent concerns about reliability, safety, and personalization. While prior work has studied health advice conflicts, these efforts typically ignore patient context and treat contradictions as universal. In this paper, we propose the task of contextualized divergence detection, which frames divergence not only as strict contradictions but also as context-dependent mismatches. To support this task, we introduce a novel dataset of 10,545 samples that combines user profiles, consumer medication guideline documents, and advice statements, with divergences synthetically generated across four categories: direct, conditional, temporal, and sub-typical. Warming climate has greatly affected the stability of the world's glaciers. In 1957, as part of the International Geophysical Year, nine North American glaciers were surveyed in great detail so that they could serve as future benchmarks. Since their initial survey, these nine benchmark glaciers have drastically decreased in volume and areal extent. This is a direct result of global warming. However, the exact amount of their change has never been fully documented and predictions of their lifespans in the wake of continued temperature increase has never been projected. We introduce and study “path odd-covers,” a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The path odd-cover number  of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in  and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is. We prove an upper bound on  in terms of the maximum degree Δ and the number of odd-degree vertices  of the form . This bound is only a factor of 2 from a rather immediate lower bound of the form . Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, Alviso is a historically underrepresented community facing disproportionate impacts of climate change. San José has directly contributed to Alviso’s infrastructure instability, particularly after its controversial 1967 annexation, which excluded Alviso residents from municipal planning processes. Alviso currently ranks in the upper quartile statewide for environmental burden with high exposure to hazardous waste, linguistic isolation, impaired waterways, and solid waste facilities. Our study produced a Community-Led Climate Vulnerability Assessment that centers resident knowledge and integrates it with environmental data to support equitable climate planning. Living In Liberal Areas Reduced Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Among Conservatives, Brittany L. Kmush, Rachel E. Dinero

Population Health Research Brief Series

Political divisions shaped public health responses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with conservatives expressing higher vaccine hesitancy than liberals. But does where conservatives live matter? This brief summarizes findings from a study using survey data from 683 U.S. adults (ages 18-94) collected March-April 2023, combined with 2020 presidential election results by zip code. The authors found that liberals consistently had low vaccine hesitancy and high uptake regardless of where they lived, but conservatives living in lower Trump vote share communities reported lower vaccine hesitancy and higher vaccination and booster uptake than conservatives in high Trump vote share communities. People with Phelan–McDermid syndrome (PMS) have reduced speech and language abilities, yet little research has profiled the communication abilities in this population. The purpose of this study was threefold: identifying the language and communication profiles of school-aged children with PMS, identifying genetic contributions to language and communication abilities, and determining the feasibility of remote data collection for research purposes. A speech language pathologist used standardized assessments and direct evaluations by video conferencing to evaluate language and communication abilities. This study presents a physics-informed neural network (PINN) framework to simulate axisymmetric submerged jet grout flow using high-fidelity data generated from ANSYS Fluent simulations. The CFD model solves the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the k-ε turbulence closure model, converted into axisymmetric form to reflect jet grouting. The PINN incorporates continuity, RANS equations, and turbulence closure equations into the loss function, enabling it to learn turbulent flow physics without requiring mesh generation. Separate neural networks were used for each flow variables—axial velocity (U), radial velocity (V), pressure (P), turbulent kinetic energy (k), and dissipation rate (ε). The model was …

The existence of a right of intrastate travel implicates basic liberties like visiting parks, driving to visit family in another city, going to church or the doctor, or voting. In addition to its importance to everyday, basic liberties, the right of intrastate travel is important for vulnerable populations, like disaster evacuees, unhoused people subject to displacement, and people seeking abortions in states without uniform availability, like New Mexico. Shell-shaped Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) represent a paradigmatic instance of quantum fluids in hollow geometries exhibiting phenomena that bridge from ultracold atomic to astrophysical realms. In this work, we present a comprehensive survey of the dynamics, thermodynamics, and collective excitations of shell-shaped BECs, synthesizing two decades of our group's theoretical work in light of recent experimental breakthroughs. We begin by analyzing the evolution of a BEC from filled-sphere to hollow-shell geometries, illustrating the necessity of microgravity conditions to avoid gravitational sag. We then analyze the collective mode structure across this evolution and pinpoint a universal dip in the frequency spectra as …

Battery state-of-health (SoH) estimation is central to transportation electrification because it conditions safety limits, warranty accounting, power capability management, and long-horizon fleet optimization. Although deep temporal architectures can achieve high laboratory accuracy, field deployment is frequently limited by laboratory (Lab)-to-field (L2F) domain shift that alters input statistics, feature definitions, and noise regimes. Under such a shift, predictors may remain strongly monotonic, preserving degradation ordering and become operationally unreliable due to systematic output distortion (e.g., compression/warping of the SoH scale).
