Learning From The Storm: The Impact Of Hurricane Experience On Future Disaster Preparedness, Eren Bilen, Tamara Sheldon, Yi Crystal Zhan

Hurricanes and tropical cyclones have become more severe over the past 40 years and are expected to intensify in the future due to climate change. In this paper, we seek to understand how natural disaster experiences shape precautionary economic behaviors in response to future risks. We combine daily, household-level consumer goods purchase data from 2008-2018 with hurricane hit and warning data and use propensity score trimming to obtain a sample of households with a similar probability of receiving a hurricane warning to mitigate the problem of endogenous residential sorting. Cancer immunotherapy is a broad term including naked antibodies, bispecific antibodies (BsAbs), immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy, cancer vaccines, activated immune cells, and allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. Recent advances in immune-engaging T-cell therapies have led to significant progress in novel treatments across various cancer types, resulting in prolonged patient survival, mainly in patients with hematologic malignancies. Several CAR T-cell constructs and BsAbs have been approved by regulatory authorities worldwide for relapsed, refractory leukemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. This project explores the creation of symmetrical curved darts through pattern manipulation. Using a basic bodice block, the Slashing method is applied to transform traditional darts into fluid, curved lines that contour the body. The design extends into a flared skirt, where waist darts are closed using the same technique to introduce volume and movement, resulting in a cohesive and balanced silhouette.

This cowl neck design showcases the art of dart manipulation and how it can transform one pattern into another. The project began with a basic bodice block and skirt pattern, which are developed into an asymmetrical drop-waist dress. The bodice darts adjusted using the Slashing method and re-traced at half scale, resulting in a cowl neckline with two pleats and a dart. The bodice is then extended to achieve the desired length and asymmetrical dropped waistline. The skirt was developed through draping and hand-pleated to create the intended effect. Roots in the Garden is a hands-on community workshop designed for patients at Roots Community Health Center who are living with type 2 diabetes or heart disease. The program focuses on helping people feel more confident about eating well by building cooking skills, learning about nutrition, connecting with others, and improving access to fresh fruits and vegetables. In partnership with The Forge Garden, participants take part in cooking demonstrations, receive fresh, seasonal produce, and get simple, heart-healthy recipes that fit their health needs. The workshop also creates opportunities to connect with the garden through activities like composting and gardening.

Goshuin (御朱印), red stamps accompanied by calligraphic inscriptions obtained at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples, have become a universal and critical element of sacred site visitation in Japan. Their collection represents perhaps the most widespread form of pilgrimage in contemporary society. Seal-oriented pilgrimages, known as goshuin meguri (御朱印巡り), are typically free-form and self-directed, and this practice entered a nationwide boom that appears to have peaked around 2019. Despite its popularity, goshuin pilgrimage has received only limited—and often speculative—scholarly attention, with little reliance on empirical data. This study reveals the rediscovery of the Doshu-michi, a 30-kilometer historical pilgrimage route associated with Akao Doshu, a devout follower of Jôdo Shin Buddhism (True Pure Land Buddhism) during the late 15th century. The research focused on identifying and reviving the original pilgrimage path traveled by Doshu, a route that begins at Gyotokuji Temple, which he founded, and Dozenji Temple, his birthplace, and ends at Zuisenji Temple, located in what is now Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture, Japan. This paper responds to pilgrimage scholar George Greenia’s assertion that meaningful intersections exist between pilgrimage and various forms of displacement, such as migration or involuntary exile due to famine, war, or political unrest. Greenia proposes that vulnerable, displaced individuals might find shelter, both conceptually and emotionally, within the framing of pilgrimage. By extending concepts of pilgrimage, it can be understood as a deliberate and intentional journey, simultaneously emphasising the transformative potential inherent in migratory movement. I was not familiar with the concept of liminality before walking the Camino de Santiago (Camino Français) for the first time in 2000. ‘Liminal’ is a Latin word for a doorway. It is the ‘threshold’ or, literally, ‘the-rush-hold’. This paper explores liminality as an in-between space when we are no longer ‘here’ but not yet ‘there’. This paper explores the spiritual dimensions of Celtic pilgrimage through a comparative analysis of two journeys: the Celtic Camino, primarily known as the English Way to Santiago, in Galicia, Spain, and the pilgrimage to Queen Maeve’s Cairn in Sligo, Ireland. It examines how invented traditions and mythological narratives contribute to a sense of ancestral connection and spiritual homecoming. The study employs autoethnographic narrative and theoretical frameworks including Simon Coleman’s concept of laterality and Jenny Butler’s observations on neo-pagan re-sacralisation of the landscape. Looking at the life of St. Francis of Assisi (1181/2–1226) through the lens of liminality can help to understand this complex figure. Anthropologist Victor Turner, for example, has explored Francis’s embrace of poverty as a means of experiencing liminality and the communitas that accompanies it. Three episodes in the life of Francis in particular constitute liminal experiences in that Francis left behind old ways of being, crossed thresholds, and experienced transformation: his encounter with lepers, his renunciation of possessions and coinciding embrace of poverty, and his encounter with Sultan Malik al-Kamil. My focus in this working paper is the myths and traditions of the Yolngu Indigenous peoples of northeast Arnhemland in remote northern Australia with whom I lived and worked in the 1980s and 90s. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used as sources of health advice, raising urgent concerns about reliability, safety, and personalization. While prior work has studied health advice conflicts, these efforts typically ignore patient context and treat contradictions as universal. In this paper, we propose the task of contextualized divergence detection, which frames divergence not only as strict contradictions but also as context-dependent mismatches. To support this task, we introduce a novel dataset of 10,545 samples that combines user profiles, consumer medication guideline documents, and advice statements, with divergences synthetically generated across four categories: direct, conditional, temporal, and sub-typical. Warming climate has greatly affected the stability of the world's glaciers. In 1957, as part of the International Geophysical Year, nine North American glaciers were surveyed in great detail so that they could serve as future benchmarks. Since their initial survey, these nine benchmark glaciers have drastically decreased in volume and areal extent. This is a direct result of global warming. However, the exact amount of their change has never been fully documented and predictions of their lifespans in the wake of continued temperature increase has never been projected. We introduce and study “path odd-covers,” a weakening of Gallai's path decomposition problem and a strengthening of the linear arboricity problem. The path odd-cover number  of a graph G is the minimum cardinality of a collection of paths whose vertex sets are contained in  and whose symmetric difference of edge sets is. We prove an upper bound on  in terms of the maximum degree Δ and the number of odd-degree vertices  of the form . This bound is only a factor of 2 from a rather immediate lower bound of the form . Located at the southern end of San Francisco Bay, Alviso is a historically underrepresented community facing disproportionate impacts of climate change. San José has directly contributed to Alviso’s infrastructure instability, particularly after its controversial 1967 annexation, which excluded Alviso residents from municipal planning processes. Alviso currently ranks in the upper quartile statewide for environmental burden with high exposure to hazardous waste, linguistic isolation, impaired waterways, and solid waste facilities. Our study produced a Community-Led Climate Vulnerability Assessment that centers resident knowledge and integrates it with environmental data to support equitable climate planning.
