Latency-Aware Arbitration Apparatus Using Lookahead Temporal Reservation Vector, N/A
Latency-Aware Arbitration Apparatus Using Lookahead Temporal Reservation Vector, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
This document describes a latency-aware arbitration apparatus that utilizes a lookahead temporal reservation vector. High-performance hardware systems often involve multiple producers sending data to a single consumer over paths with variable deterministic latency. To avoid data collisions without relying on extensive buffering, the described system implements time-slot reservation logic. A reservation bitmap tracks the future availability of the consumer interface, functioning similarly to a conveyor belt. Producers check the availability of specific time slots before transmitting data. This approach reduces storage demands and facilitates efficient bandwidth utilization while avoiding the area costs associated with deep latency-matching buffers. Keywords: Latency-Aware Arbitration, …

Zero-Latency Cold Start Via In-Band Application Context Streaming, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure is directed to achieving zero-latency cold starts in cloud computing environments utilizing in-band application context streaming to eliminate disk I/O bottlenecks. When a service becomes idle, a micro-snapshot generating engine performs differential state stripping to identify and serialize only modified memory pages and CPU register values into a micro-snapshot, which is then offloaded to the volatile static random-access memory (SRAM) of a programmable network switch or top-of-rack (ToR) switch. Upon detecting an incoming user request for the hibernated service, the switch may intercept the packet and inject the stored application context as a burst stream of packets …

Eliminating Stuck At Capture Mode In Static Timing Analysis By Design, N/A
Defensive Publications Series
The present disclosure is directed to eliminating adverse capture timing modes in static timing analysis (STA) through design. In high-performance integrated circuits, such as system-on-chip (SoC) designs, functional paths across independent intellectual property (IP) blocks are traditionally tested for stuck-at faults using a common slow-frequency off-chip clock. This may create complex timing closure scenarios due to large clock skew and crosstalk across IP boundaries. Large High Performance Compute SOCs in small technologies and specifically AI/ML Chips with high number of Multi Instantiated modules possess large volume of such paths. The present disclosure utilizes on-chip clock controllers (OCCs) within each IP block …

Centrifugal pumps are widely used in industrial processes for transferring fluids under varying operating conditions. These pumps require a minimum flow rate to maintain internal cooling and prevent damage caused by overheating, cavitation, and excessive vibration during startup, shutdown, or process upsets. Failure to maintain this minimum flow can lead to premature wear of pump components, seal failures, and reduced operational reliability.
Valves designed for minimum flow applications play a critical role in protecting centrifugal pumps. Such valves automatically recirculate a predetermined minimum flow back to the source or a storage tank during low-load conditions, including startup, shutdown, and process …

Ultra Supercritical (USC) power plants operate at extremely high pressures (typically above 250 bar) and temperatures exceeding 600°C to achieve maximum thermal efficiency. During boiler startup, water must be gradually introduced into the system to control thermal stress and prepare for steam generation. This process requires precise regulation of water flow under severe transient conditions. The water control valve used in this application is normally closed when the boiler is offline. Once opened, it operates continuously for approximately four hours during startup to manage controlled heating and pressure buildup. During this period, the valve experiences extreme operating conditions, including: • …

Two Wrestlers: An Unrealized Herculean Pendant To Michelangelo’S David, Theodore Mayberry
Knowledge and Creativity Expo
Following the completion of Michelangelo’s David 1504, Gonfalonier Piero Soderini presented the emerging Florentine artist with a proposal for a second statue on behalf of Florence’s government: a statue of Hercules to stand alongside the David at the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio. Michelangelo readily accepted, however the commission never came to be; what remains of Michelangelo’s vision for the Herculean pendant now resides in the Casa Buonarroti Museum of Florence: a rough terracotta model of Hercules and Cacus. Upon review of the scholarship documenting Michelangelo’s unrealized Hercules as well as his David, an intriguing pattern can be observed …

Nerves (Neurology Education Research And Observership Summer Program): A Pilot Fellowship Program Targeting Neurophobia In Pre-Clerkship Medical Students, Arlinda Deng, Daniela Fishbein, James Martindale, Elizabeth Bradley, William Alexander Dalrymple, Ryan Cappa
Journal of Innovation in Health Sciences Education
Introduction: Neurophobia has contributed to the shortage of neurologists nationally, especially given the lack of integration between basic neural sciences and clinical neurology. Neurophobia may be highest after the pre-clerkship course, and there is evidence to suggest that early and broad clinical neurology exposure and mentorship are the leading factors in choosing the field of neurology. The goal of this study was to develop a fellowship for pre-clerkship medical students to increase early exposure to diverse clinical settings and socialization in neurology and assess whether there was change in neurophobia.
Methods: A two-week long pilot summer fellowship was designed …

Study of tick-host association is critical to understanding host-pathogen ecology. Collection of ticks from mammalian hosts is difficult because of permitting, cost, and time considerations, particularly for medium and large mammals. The ODU Tick Research Team has been collecting ticks from mammals since 2010 using a combination of serendipitous sampling from roadkill and donations from veterinarians, hunters, and wildlife rehabilitators. In this work, we quantify the association between Ixodes scapularis and Ixodes keiransi and various mammalian hosts in Virginia. Ixodes scapularis (deer tick or blacklegged tick) is the primary vector of the Lyme disease bacterium (Borrelia burgdorferi s.s.) in …

AUIQ Complementary Biological System
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem neurodegenerative disorder involving oxidative stress and neuroinflammation beyond classical hippocampal pathology. The hypothalamus, a key regulator of metabolic and neuroendocrine homeostasis, remains comparatively underexplored in experimental AD models. This study investigated the effects of aqueous Annona muricata seed extract (SSE) on hypothalamic oxidative injury in an aluminium chloride (AlCl3)-induced Alzheimer's disease–like model in Wistar rats. Adult Wistar rats of both sexes were randomly assigned to five groups (n = 5): control, AlCl3 (100 mg/kg), SSE alone (200 mg/kg), AlCl3 + SSE, and AlCl3 + donepezil (10 …

Diffusion models have emerged as a powerful class of generative models, demonstrating impressive results across visual domains such as image and video synthesis. This survey provides a comprehensive taxonomy of generative models, with a particular focus on diffusion models and their applications in enhancing visual fidelity for text-to-image and text-to-video generation. We discuss the theoretical foundations of diffusion models, including their formulation through stochastic differential equations, and analyze the forward noising and reverse denoising processes that enable stable training and high-quality generation. The survey further categorizes diffusion architectures, including pixel-space and latent-space models, and examines their design choices, training strategies, …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
Accurately estimating terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET), the second-largest hydrologic flux in the terrestrial water cycle, is vital for understanding global water and carbon exchanges. It is difficult to measure and estimate terrestrial ET at regional and global scales. Satellites have provided us an effective tool to estimate regional and global terrestrial ET in recent decades. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of the basic theoretical foundations, methods and products of satellite-derived terrestrial ET. The basic theoretical foundations for estimating terrestrial ET are the Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) and other budding theories (e.g., Maximum entropy production theory, and generalized Hamilton …

Perturbations To Horizontal Gnss Position Time Series By Atmospheric Lee Waves In The San Bernardino Valley, California, Walter Szeliga, Logan Grey
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Anomalous systematic position offsets have been noted in GNSS time series from a variety of locations around the globe. In many regions, these time series anomalies coincide with the presence of cloud streets in visible satellite imagery, implicating atmospheric lee waves as the source of the position offsets. We report here on seasonal anomalous position offsets from the San Bernardino Basin of southern California that occur during clear skies. Modeling of the troposphere on days with anomalous positions shows the presence of atmospheric lee waves. Ray tracing through these tropospheric models suggests that atmospheric lee waves create low elevation perturbations …

Inertia Versus Adaptation: Relational Resilience In Buyer-Supplier Relationships Facing Extreme Disruption, Jordan M. Barker, Anne E. Dohmen, Carlos Mena
Business Faculty Publications and Presentations
This research introduces the concept of relational resilience, which reflects the dynamic capacity of a buyer–supplier relationship to absorb external shocks and continue its core function of exchange. Guided by structural inertia theory (SIT), the research explores how relationship age, exchange volume, and multiplexity contribute to relational resilience across both stable periods and times of extreme disruption. Using a large-scale panel dataset of buyer–supplier relationships and the COVID-19 pandemic as an exogenous shock, the findings reveal that relational resilience is enhanced by all three mechanisms, but extreme disruptions lessen the protective value of relationship age and exchange volume while strengthening …

School of Nursing and Health Science: Faculty Scholarship
Introduction:
Life satisfaction is the cognitive evaluation of an individual’s current life situation and personal criteria influenced by their acclimatization process. Since the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) was introduced in 1985, it has been translated into 30 different languages. To date, there is limited knowledge about Filipino life satisfaction and its correlation to mental health. SWLS has not been translated, and its psychometric properties have not been established in Filipino. This study establishes the psychometric properties of the Filipino SWLS and examines the correlations between life satisfaction and mental health among Filipino Americans.

Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy
Voice And Pain: Representations Of Disability In Adaptations Of “The Little Mermaid”, Ace Molloy
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 story, “The Little Mermaid,” is a popular fairy tale that has been adapted several times by writers, filmmakers, and game developers. It is one of the few fairy tales with explicit portrayals of disability; the mermaid in the tale is nonspeaking and experiences chronic pain, as well as being a mermaid—a nonnormative figure who is aligned with disability. This paper looks at the ways that the mermaid is portrayed in literary, film, and new media adaptations from a disability-justice perspective. Examining multiple representations of the character, I argue that while feminist adaptations erase her disability and …
