BACKGROUND: As life expectancy for people living with HIV (PWH) has increased, there has been a rise in age-related comorbidities such as hypertension. Exercise is an important nonpharmacological strategy to counter such adverse effects of chronic HIV infection. High-intensity interval training (HIIT) has been demonstrated to be safe and efficacious in improving health outcomes in individuals with chronic illness, but data are limited in older PWH and co-morbid conditions. The primary objective of this pilot feasibility study was to assess the feasibility, efficacy, and safety of a 6-week HIIT intervention among older PWH and co-occurring hypertension.

METHODS: PWH were recruited …

Tau accumulates in a group of neurodegenerative diseases known as tauopathies. A prevailing hypothesis has been that Tau degradation is impaired due to an age-related imbalance in the autophagy-lysosome pathway, but whether these defects are a cause or consequence of Tau accumulation remains unclear. Here we show that a disease-causing mutation in the MAPT gene, which encodes Tau, p.R406W, is sufficient to disrupt multiple steps of the autophagy-lysosome pathway in human neurons. Using Airyscan super-resolution imaging, we find that mutant Tau neurons accumulate Tau and phosphorylated Tau in dysfunctional lysosomes, exhibit reduced lysosome motility, impaired fusion of autophagosomes and lysosomes, …

Neighborhood social determinants of health have been shown to influence cardiovascular risk and the development of cardiovascular disease, but few studies have been done about early-life exposure as well as the combined effect of multiple neighborhood social determinants of health measures. Each 1-standard-deviation increase in the neighborhood social determinants of health index is associated with increased risk of coronary artery calcification at the year 7, year 15, and year 20 visits (Odds Ratios range from 1.15 to 1.17). The area under the Receiver Operating Characteristics curve ranges between 0.718 (year 7) and 0.719 (year 20). Compared to White participants, Black …

Ketone bodies have traditionally been recognized as glucose-sparing energy sources, with hepatic ketogenesis and peripheral ketolysis serving pivotal functions in maintaining energy homeostasis during fasting. Although they are commonly seen as harmful due to their link with ketoacidosis, recent studies emphasize their roles in organ protection. This has sparked interest in their possible use as a treatment for chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, we examined both exogenous and endogenous ketone body supplementation in adenine-induced kidney injury in mice. Supplementation with the ketone body precursor 1,3-butanediol significantly improved adenine-induced renal fibrosis, inflammation, and apoptotic cell death. However, genetically deleting …

The Poli̇ti̇cal And Soci̇al Di̇mensi̇ons Of Alcohol İn Mongol Ri̇tuals, Dr. Esra Özel Mar 2026

The Poli̇ti̇cal And Soci̇al Di̇mensi̇ons Of Alcohol İn Mongol Ri̇tuals, Dr. Esra Özel

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In the 13th century, under the leadership of Genghis Khan, the Mongol Empire emerged where alcohol was not merely a consumable item but a multifaceted and functional cultural practice integral to the construction of political legitimacy, the establishment of social order, and the performance of ritual representations. For the nomadic Mongols, alcohol consumption transcended personal habit, playing a central role in regulating social relations, strengthening leadership, and consolidating political alliances. Alcohol presentations during ceremonial events such as kurultais, enthronement ceremonies, diplomatic meetings, military victory celebrations, and festivals were regarded as symbolic indicators of generosity, loyalty, and hierarchical order. Particularly, the …

On Fibonacci Ensembles: An Alternative Approach To Ensemble Learning Inspired By The Timeless Architecture Of The Golden Ratio, Ernest Fokoue Mar 2026

On Fibonacci Ensembles: An Alternative Approach To Ensemble Learning Inspired By The Timeless Architecture Of The Golden Ratio, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

Nature rarely reveals her secrets bluntly, yet in the Fibonacci sequence she grants us a glimpse of her quiet architecture of growth, harmony, and recursive stability \citep{Koshy2001Fibonacci, Livio2002GoldenRatio}. From spiral galaxies to the unfolding of leaves, this humble sequence reflects a universal grammar of balance. In this work, we introduce \emph{Fibonacci Ensembles}, a mathematically principled yet philosophically inspired framework for ensemble learning that complements and extends classical aggregation schemes such as bagging, boosting, and random forests \citep{Breiman1996Bagging, Breiman2001RandomForests, Friedman2001GBM, Zhou2012Ensemble, HastieTibshiraniFriedman2009ESL}. Two intertwined formulations unfold: (1) the use of normalized Fibonacci weights -- tempered through orthogonalization and Rao--Blackwell optimization -- …

Fibonacci-Driven Recursive Ensembles: Algorithms, Convergence, And Learning Dynamics, Ernest Fokoue Mar 2026

Fibonacci-Driven Recursive Ensembles: Algorithms, Convergence, And Learning Dynamics, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

This paper develops the algorithmic and dynamical foundations of recursive ensemble learning driven by Fibonacci-type update flows. In contrast with classical boosting Freund and Schapire (1997); Friedman (2001), where the ensemble evolves through first-order additive updates, we study second-order recursive architectures in which each predictor depends on its two immediate predecessors. These Fibonacci flows induce a learning dynamic with memory, allowing ensembles to integrate past structure while adapting to new residual information. We introduce a general family of recursive weight-update algorithms encompassing Fibonacci, tribonacci, and higher-order recursions, together with continuous-time limits that yield systems of differential equations governing ensemble evolution. …

Learning Ordinal Geometry: Semantic–Aware Kernels For Ordered Categorical Data, Ernest Fokoue Mar 2026

Learning Ordinal Geometry: Semantic–Aware Kernels For Ordered Categorical Data, Ernest Fokoue

Articles

Ordinal data arise ubiquitously in survey research, psychology, medicine, economics, and recommender systems, yet kernel methods for such data typically rely on either nominal encodings or arbitrary numeric codings. The former discards order information; the lat- ter imposes a fictitious metric structure. This paper develops a principled framework for kernel design on ordinal scales and introduces a new class of Semantic–Aware Ordinal Ker- nels (SAOK) that simultaneously capture ordinal order and semantic proximity between categories. We begin by formalizing order–preserving embeddings of finite chains and characterizing a broad family of chain distances that are conditionally negative definite. Through Schoen- berg …

When The Tail Wags The Dog: The Game Of Justice And The Elusive Quest For Due Process In The Middle East, Mohamed Arafa Mar 2026

When The Tail Wags The Dog: The Game Of Justice And The Elusive Quest For Due Process In The Middle East, Mohamed Arafa

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Due process guarantees lie at the heart of any legitimate legal system, serving as a critical safeguard against arbitrary state power and as a foundation for the rule of law. Yet their meaning and implementation vary significantly across legal traditions and political contexts.

This article examines the scope and limitations of due process guarantees in the Middle East, focusing on Egypt and Saudi Arabia as illustrative case studies. While both jurisdictions formally recognize procedural protections within their constitutional and legal frameworks, the practical application of these guarantees often diverges from international standards.

The article analyzes core due process principles—such as …

Who Wins The Fight To Protect The Right Of Publicity Through § 512(C) Of The Dmca?, Dillon Ruzich

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Misrepresenting a copyright infringement claim when sending a takedown request under 17 U.S.C. § 512(c) is currently the most effective way to protect against the unauthorized use of names, images, and likenesses, or the right of publicity, on the Internet. With the absence of meaningful federal protection, who wins the fight to protect the right of publicity online? This Note examines tolerating the misapplication of § 512(c) for the right of publicity, considers a congressional amendment to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA), and then evaluates incorporation of the right of publicity into the proposed NO FAKES Act before recommending …

Engineering and Technology Journal

In this paper, a two-stage optimization scheme of proactive resilience of the transmission system to severe multi-bus contingencies is developed. A hybrid PSO-GSA-Quantum metaheuristic is used to find the 4-bus reactive fault clusters in the IEEE 118-bus system in stage 1. The cluster identified with the performance index (PI) of 1.8875 × 103 has the 91.6th percentile of 10000 random Monte Carlo samples and 1.78 times worse than the worst N-1 contingency. The results of the Monte Carlo analysis indicate that the PI distribution is essentially bimodal (skewness = 0.5188, kurtosis = 3.2394) and the distribution is concentrated around …

Effects Of Types And Amount Of Organic Matter On The Engineering Properties Of Soil, Afaq H. Malleh, Mohammed Y. Fattah, Hussein H. Karim

Engineering and Technology Journal

Organic soils exhibit highly variable geotechnical behavior due to differences in the type, content, and decomposition state of organic matter, which are often inadequately distinguished in engineering practice. This study investigates the influence of organic matter origin on soil behavior through a comparative analysis of sapric organic soils and sewage sludge soil tested under identical one-dimensional consolidation conditions. Laboratory tests included physical characterization, standard consolidation tests under vertical stresses of 200 kPa and 800 kPa, post-consolidation organic matter measurements, and microstructural analyses using SEM–EDS and XRD. The results show that increasing sapric organic matter content from 23% to 35% led …
