Oldfield & Bonano’s (2024) [O&B] target article discusses the wellbeing and sociality of bony fishes. Many fish species, such as cichlids, are not only social but territorial. Aggression is normal, but territorial aggression in a captive environment can have a negative impact on welfare. Aggression-related injuries and deaths are prevalent in pet stores as well as research settings. We discuss the need to develop effective methods to minimize the negative consequences of aggression.

Chemo-therapeutic application of metal complexes to remediation and subjugation of emerging infectious diseases with a view to improving potency and efficacy of a variety of drugs is gaining more momentum, especially in the 21st century. This research work designed a new biologically active complex [AgL(PPh3)2]NO3,C, obtained from the reaction of Ag(I) nitrate with bidentate pyridinyl Schiff base ligand (E)-N-(4-fluorophenyl)-1-(pyridin-2-yl) methanimine L, with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) as co-ligand. Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia, is characterized by progressive memory and cognitive decline. Conventional genome-wide association studies (GWAS) comparing AD cases and controls may miss genetic influences that act along a continuum of cognitive function. Using data from 3007 participants in the National Institute on Aging Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease Family Study (NIA-LOAD GWAS), we conducted a family-based GWAS of eight quantitative cognitive phenotypes encompassing episodic memory (Logical Memory IA and IIA), working memory (Digit Span Forward, Backward, and Ordering), and semantic fluency (Animal, Fruit and Vegetable, and Vegetable Fluency). This study utilized Monte Carlo (MC) simulations to optimize radiation doses in pediatric multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) head scans by analyzing key parameters like tube current (mA), tube voltage (kV), pitch, and slice thickness. The findings indicate that reducing tube current significantly lowers the Computed Tomography Dose Index (CTDIvol) and Dose Length Product (DLP), effectively minimizing patient radiation exposure. Higher pitch values (0.7–0.9) further reduced radiation by decreasing beam overlap, while using a thinner slice thickness (0.6 mm) improved dose efficiency. The performance of the KNN algorithm is heavily dependent on the value of parameter K, which represents the number of nearest neighbors. Choosing an inappropriate value for K can affect the classification accuracy because a smaller chosen K can lead to overfitting and vice versa. Public passageways enable people, animals and goods to navigate a built environment, allowing access to residences, shops and public buildings, and also demarcate the spheres of society: economic versus social, sacred versus profane and public versus private. Passageways also mark the arrangement of neighborhoods and typically reflect a purposeful organization for settlements. This paper explores the nature of passageways at early urban settlements in the Southern Levant, and particularly their placement and maintenance in Early Bronze Age domestic neighborhoods. Background: Autistic people face multiple barriers to health care. To recognize specific barriers in a standardized way, autistic people, health care providers, and researchers need a suitable measure. The Academic Autistic Spectrum Partnership in Research and Education successfully developed the Barriers to Healthcare Checklist— Short Form (BHC-SF). It remains unclear whether (1) a German version of the BHC-SF performs well in terms of psychometric properties and (2) the BHC-SF consists of multiple constructs (i.e., assessing structural validity). Bio-organic materials have garnered significant attention as sustainable candidates for non-volatile resistive switching memory (RSM) because of their specialized chemical, structural, and environmental advantages. This review presents a design-centered perspective on bio-organic RSM by outlining the key device components required for effective device engineering, including electrode materials, memristive thin films, intermediate layers, substrates, and electrical measurement strategies. Inflammatory Burden And Multisystem Outcomes In Cushing's Disease: A Five-Year Comparative Cohort Study Stratified By Hs-Crp, Andrew Cecil, Ekow Essien, Gloria Amoako, Abena Agyekum

OBJECTIVE:

Cushing's disease is associated with significant cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity, yet the role of systemic inflammation as a prognostic marker remains incompletely characterized. We investigated whether elevated high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) identifies a higher-risk phenotype among patients with pituitary-dependent Cushing's disease across multiple organ systems.

METHODS:

Using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network (155 healthcare organizations), we conducted a propensity-matched comparative cohort analysis of adults with Cushing's disease stratified by hs-CRP levels (≥1.20 mg/L vs. < 1.20 mg/L). Following 1:1 propensity score matching for demographics, comorbidities, and medication use, 617 patients per cohort were analyzed. Outcomes included mortality, cardiovascular events (myocardial infarction, heart failure, pulmonary embolism), chronic kidney disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, and cerebrovascular disease over a five-year follow-up period (1-1825 days post-index).

RESULTS:

Patients with elevated hs-CRP demonstrated significantly higher all-cause mortality (20.5% vs. 7.9%; HR 2.86, p< 0.001) , increased risks of heart failure (7.9% vs. 4.5%; HR 1.98, p=0.023), and type 2 diabetes (14.5% vs. 6.1%; HR 2.71, 95% CI 1.65-4.45, p< 0.001). No significant differences were observed in myocardial infarction (3.3% vs. 2.3%, p=0.303), chronic kidney disease (12.1% vs. 8.3%; p=0.052), hypertension (23.5% vs. 16.9%; p=0.067),   pulmonary embolism (3.1% vs. 1.7%, p=0.118), depression (6.3% vs. 5.6%, p=0.606), osteoporosis (7.1% vs. 6.5%, p=0.704), or cerebrovascular disease (8.4% vs. 7.6%, p=0.635).

Cooperative problem-solving tasks, including the loose-string paradigm, require individuals to coordinate their actions simultaneously to obtain a shared reward. These paradigms have been used extensively to assess social cognition, behavioral coordination, and partner preferences across taxa. Although the loose-string paradigm has been widely tested, it has not been applied to pair-bonded, monogamous primates such as owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae), which exhibit affiliative behaviors including food sharing and bi-parental care. In the twenty-first-century United States, however, constitutional rights have increasingly been interpreted and deployed, by both litigants and courts, to secure the ability of the strong to dominate the weak. It is quickly becoming standard practice among right-wing American populists to claim that the deployment of rights in ways that limit the ability of the strong to dominate those weaker than themselves is to make victims of the strong. Recent excavations at the Final Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) mega-site of Motza revealed the earliest evidence of settlement planning in the Southern Levant to date. The size of the site and the layout of its architectural units indicate that planning decisions were made throughout the settlement establishment and development, beginning with the choice of its location and extending to the organization of intra-site space. This is evident from the presence of central alleys connecting neighborhoods and open areas, alongside smaller roads and passageways linking private and communal structures, and courtyards. This talk examines how Callao, the district with the second highest homicide rate in Peru, has come to be understood—and governed—as a site of danger. Tracing Callao’s history since its founding in 1537, the presentation shows how racialized labor regimes, criminalized economies, environmental degradation, and uneven state presence have produced enduring narratives of disorder. These narratives have obscured structural abandonment while casting residents as inherently troublesome and dangerous. Rather than an exceptional space, Callao emerges as a product of these long-term processes, revealing how violence functions not as a breakdown of order, but as a central mechanism through which urban …

The thousands of oil and gas (OG) platforms placed at sea for fossil fuel extraction have introduced new hard substrate to the marine environment. Over time, these structures can become colonized by a diversity of marine life, fostering novel ecosystems. However, an increasing number of OG platforms are reaching decommissioning age and decisions regarding their fate must be made. Some view these artificial structures as litter that ought to be removed; others view them as valuable contributors to marine biodiversity worth preserving. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide and is commonly associated with pelvic pain, infertility, and reduced quality of life. Current management strategies, including hormonal therapies and surgical intervention, often provide only temporary relief and are associated with recurrence and adverse effects. These limitations highlight the need for alternative, non-hormonal therapeutic approaches that target underlying inflammatory and cellular mechanisms of disease progression.

The current study examines bidirectional associations between adolescent body-related concerns and maternal psychological control, and the behavioral mechanism through which these associations operate. Participants were 723 sixth- through ninth-grade students (350 girls, 373 boys; ages 11–15) attending all public middle and secondary schools in a mid-sized Lithuanian community. Self-report surveys were collected at three time points across the course of a school year. Results from full longitudinal mediation models indicated that higher body image dissatisfaction and weight concerns at the beginning of the school year predicted increases in maternal psychological control at the end of the school year, through increases …
