Abundance Of Halyomorpha Halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) And Megacopta Cribraria (Hemiptera: Plataspidae) In Soybean In Areas With Few Previous Sightings In Tennessee, Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Richard H. Link

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Halyomorpha halys (Stål) and Megacopta cribraria (Fabricius) are two exotic invasive pests that have invaded the United States in recent years. Halyomorpha halys can damage various fruits, vegetables, and field crops, such as soybean and corn, while Megacopta cribraria only attacks soybean and kudzu, a weed species. They are currently found in southeastern states and threaten soybean and other crops grown in the region. This study evaluated the seasonal abundance of H. halys and M. cribraria in soybeans in 2016 and 2017 in two counties in the central region of Tennessee, where both species had either a few sightings or …

Objectives

The goals of this study were to characterize clinical coordinators compared to other Physician Assistant (PA) faculty, and investigate factors associated with intent to leave their position, institution, and academia in the U.S.

Methods

This was a secondary analysis of data obtained from the 2019 Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Faculty and Directors Survey. We examined bivariate associations with faculty role and conducted multiple logistic regression to identify predictors of intent to leave among clinical directors.

Results

Clinical directors indicated an intention to leave their position more often than other faculty. Factors influencing intent to leave were a lack …

Michigan COVID-19 Outbreak Reports

The Outbreak Data page was obtained from Michigan's COVID-19 data page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/stats/outbreak-reporting.

This report is created by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services from data self-reported by local health departments. Data is updated every week.

COVID-19 outbreaks are generally defined as two or more cases with a link by place and time indicating a shared exposure outside of a household. Local health departments report the number of new and ongoing outbreaks they are investigating by the setting of the outbreak. New outbreaks are those outbreaks that were first identified during the current reporting week. Ongoing outbreaks are …

Should We Get Rid Of The Bar Exam?, John Lande Feb 2023

Should We Get Rid Of The Bar Exam?, John Lande

Faculty Blogs

This post discusses an article analyzing empirical data about licensing of lawyers in Wisconsin. Graduates of Wisconsin schools have a diploma privilege and are licensed in that state without taking a bar exam. The article argues that bar exams generally don’t fulfill their purpose of protecting the public. They consume tremendous resources of the legal profession, law schools, and law student and divert attention from activities that are likely to be more effective and valuable.

Facilitating Tilting As A Faculty Community, Debra Palmer, Carrie Bachhofer, Allen Brown, Alaina Kaus, Michele Mckie, Thelma Sexton

Perspectives In Learning

In this paper, we describe our perspectives and experiences working as one of several small groups within a campus-wide program at our university to help implement transparency in learning and teaching (TILT) principles. Faculty were asked to implement TILT into lower-and upper-level courses, as well as co-curricular activities, by transforming some aspect of their course or activities to be more "transparent," meaning students would be able to better understand its purpose and value and how it relates to their major, future career, and personal lives. The program followed a faculty learning community (FLC) model, where members supported one another through …

Can Tilt Be Used To Teach Study Tactics? A Case Study In A Biology Classroom, Anne Jacobs

Perspectives In Learning

Recently, there has been a movement encouraging instructors in higher education to use the Transparency in Teaching and Learning (TILT) framework when designing assignments. This framework helps instructors clarify their expectations and evaluation criteria. Making assignments more transparent may result in greater student success. However, it is less clear how this framework can be applied to classes that use exams as a main method of assessing student learning. One option might be to use a TILTed assignment to introduce students to learning tools to improve their studying. I did this by giving students in an introductory biology class an assignment …

Salty Genes: Rapid Discovery Of Salt Tolerance Genes In The Bacteria Kushneria, Andrew Jenkins, Brent Nielson, Jonathon T. Hill

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023

1st place poster design

Global rising levels of soil salinity have led researchers to seek microbial solutions to increase agricultural plant viability in high salt soils.

Kushneria increases growth of inoculated alfalfa in high salt soils, but little is known about how Kushneria survives in these environments1 or how it can be used to reduce the economic burden of salted soil.

Selection Of And Response To Physical Activity-Based Social Comparisons In A Digital Environment: Series Of Daily Assessment Studies., Danielle Arigo, Robert C Gray, Diane H Dallal, Jennifer Villareale, Jichen Zhu

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

BACKGROUND: Innovative approaches are needed to understand barriers to and facilitators of physical activity among insufficiently active adults. Although social comparison processes (ie, self-evaluations relative to others) are often used to motivate physical activity in digital environments, user preferences and responses to comparison information are poorly understood.

OBJECTIVE: We used an iterative approach to better understand users' selection of comparison targets, how they interacted with their selected targets, and how they responded to these targets.

METHODS: Across 3 studies, different samples of insufficiently active college students used the Fitbit system (Fitbit LLC) to track their steps per day as well …

Plouffe, Anthony Nazarov, Callista A. Forchuk, Julia Gervasio, Tri Le, Jenny J. W. Liu, Maede S. Nouri, Cassidy Trahair, Deanna L. Walker, J. Don Richardson

MacDonald Franklin OSI Research Centre

Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Veterans encounter unique challenges associated with their service. Exposure to service-related traumatic events places them at risk for developing adverse mental health outcomes, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Our research aimed to assess whether the HEXACO personality model and resilience impacted associations between combat experiences and PTSD symptomatology in CAF Veterans in the past month. We recruited a sample of 245 CAF Veterans (81 % men; Mage = 48.47, SDage = 10.34) to complete a battery of questionnaires. PTSD symptoms were significantly associated with more combat experience, lower resilience, lower extraversion, higher emotionality, and …

BACKGROUND: Despite well-documented increased demands and shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) during previous disease outbreaks, health systems in Canada were poorly prepared to meet the need for PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the primary care sector, PPE shortages impacted the delivery of health services and contributed to increased workload, fear, and anxiety among primary care providers. This study examines family physicians' (FPs) response to PPE shortages during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic to inform future pandemic planning.

METHODS: As part of a multiple case study, we conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with FPs across four regions in …

In the past two decades, the Journal of Public Affairs has solidified corporate public affairs as a legitimate leadership skillset vital to driving future business growth. Yet, more work at a persistently overlooked gap in the Journal, the intersection of public affairs and family businesses, might shed new light on thriving, trusted, and sustainable business practices. This paper examines the unique contributions of family businesses as trusted influencers. As one of the most prominent forms of business, worldwide, family businesses persistently enjoy unusually high levels of public trust while collectively employing millions of wage earners yet their contributions to corporate …

Libraries Scholarship

This study investigated Gold Open Access journal publication by science and engineering faculty at the authors’ university from 2013 to 2022. Specifically, did Gold Open Access (OA) by these faculty increase, and did the publication rate vary between disciplines? The authors found that Gold OA publication increased by 176% over the past 10 years, and that an important factor was the Libraries’ creation of an Open Access Publishing Fund in 2017. Disciplinary differences in publication rates were also notable, with life sciences research showing the highest rates of open access publication. An analysis of where our faculty are publishing found …

Crt-100.04 Delaying Reperfusion Plus Lv Unloading Reduces Infarct Size: A Per-Protocol-Analysis Of The Stemi_Dtu Pilot Study, Mohit Pahuja, William O'Neill, Richard H. Karas, Jeffrey Moses, James Udelson, Haroon Faraz, Navin K. Kapur

Cardiology Meeting Abstracts

Background: Myocardial infarct size (IS) and microvascular obstruction (MVO) are well-established prognostic markers in STEMI. The STEMI-DTU pilot trial was the first exploratory study to identify that LV unloading and delayed reperfusion was feasible. We now report new findings in patients from per-protocol cohort on the basis of magnitude of sum of precordial ST-segment elevation.

Method: In a multicenter, prospective, randomized safety and feasibility trial, 50 patients with anterior STEMI to LV unloading using Impella CP were assigned into two different arms including immediate reperfusion (U-IR) versus delayed reperfusion after 30 minutes of unloading (U-DR). Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging …
