Sudan Is A Window Of Civilized Communication And An Ethnic And Ethnic Melting Pot (Darfur As A Model), Sayed Ahmed Ali Othman Alakeed Feb 2023

Sudan Is A Window Of Civilized Communication And An Ethnic And Ethnic Melting Pot (Darfur As A Model), Sayed Ahmed Ali Othman Alakeed

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Eastern Sudan, in its current geographical concept, has been occupying a distinct strategic location. Geographically, politically, economically, socially and culturally. This made it the center of the greed of regional and international powers since the beginning of the nineteenth century AD until today. He enjoys enormous wealth above and below the ground, unparalleled water resources, and vast, fertile, pristine lands that were and still are the love of many greedy people. Before secession, it was adjacent to ten countries, all of which are windows of civilized, ethnic, cultural and spiritual communication between it and its neighbors. Through these windows, tribes …

The Rise And Fall Of Civilizations Between The Dynamics Of Adaptation And Climatic Fluctuations: Mesopotamia Civilization And Roman Civilization As A Model, Eaziz Alsaghir

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Throughout the ages and through the succession of times, the Earth has passed through unstable climatic periods, sometimes cold and sometimes warm and dry, whose repercussions were the flourishing of civilizations that benefited from the stability of environmental conditions in environments that were different from what we know today, and the collapse of societies and countries under the weight of cold and drought, which was proven Many historical writings and remnants of inherited exploitations. Awareness of climate change as an issue that humanity has become facing is an important issue, and working to understand it necessarily requires understanding the context …

Beat It: A Proposal To End Bans On Masturbation While Incarcerated, Madison Dougherty Feb 2023

Beat It: A Proposal To End Bans On Masturbation While Incarcerated, Madison Dougherty

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog

There are many rights people forfeit when they are incarcerated; among these is the right to sexual expression. Incarcerated people are punished inconsistently, severely, and arbitrarily for touching themselves. In 2006, Terry Lee Alexander was masturbating alone in a bunk in Broward County, Florida when a female deputy monitoring his cell from a control room over one hundred feet away wrote him up. Alexander was convicted of exposure and sentenced to sixty days in jail. In 2000, a female guard saw Freddie Williams, a then-incarcerated person in a South Carolina prison, turned sideways in his shower towards the wall, stroking …

Coloration Strategies In Sympatric Vietnamese Damselflies, Eva J. Driggs, Seth M. Bybee Feb 2023

Coloration Strategies In Sympatric Vietnamese Damselflies, Eva J. Driggs, Seth M. Bybee

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023

Odonates (dragonflies and damselflies) have evolved vibrant coloration for various reasons. Odonates use color signals to identify their own species from others and potential mates. Some Odonates use blue color to blend into the water while others are only active when their color can best be seen. Different selective pressures will evolve a specific color strategy. Color is a key to understanding the evolutionary pressures for damselflies. Color has not been studied in depth for Vietnamese Odonates, even though Vietnam is a top 15 biodiversity hotspot. We hope to better understand color evolution in Vietnamese damselflies and the role …

Gender Violence As A Penalty Of Poverty, Deborah M. Weissman Feb 2023

Gender Violence As A Penalty Of Poverty, Deborah M. Weissman

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

The matter of gender violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV), has long been categorized as a particularly egregious crime. The consequences of IPV are profound and affect all members of the household, family members near and far, and the communities where they live. Gender violence impacts the national economy. Costs accrue to workplaces, health care institutions, and encumber local and state coffers. Survivors are deprived of income, property, and economic stability: conditions that often endure beyond periods of physical injuries. Offenders also experience economic hardship as a result of involvement with the legal system. They often face significant obstacles when …

Is There Force In Force Majeure After Covid-19 Or In The Freedom To Negotiate Risk?, Sara Lazarevic Feb 2023

Is There Force In Force Majeure After Covid-19 Or In The Freedom To Negotiate Risk?, Sara Lazarevic

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

This note explores the impact COVID–19 has had on contracting parties who have attempted to implicate force majeure provisions. An inquiry of recent cases reveals varying degrees of success and tension when parties turn towards force majeure text. This Note analyzes common law alternatives, discusses the implication of force majeure clauses as applied under Mexican and American law, highlights the implications that have played out in recent court decisions, and discusses post–pandemic implications that could affect how parties conduct cross–border transactions in the future.

Mitigating Zoonotic Disease Threats To Prevent Future Pandemics: A Critical Analysis Of Policy Favoring The Closures Of Wildlife Markets In Latin America, Melany J. Danielson Feb 2023

Mitigating Zoonotic Disease Threats To Prevent Future Pandemics: A Critical Analysis Of Policy Favoring The Closures Of Wildlife Markets In Latin America, Melany J. Danielson

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

The Preventing Future Pandemics Act was introduced to mitigate zoonotic disease threats around the world by focusing policy efforts on the closure of wildlife markets that gave rise to COVID–19. This Note challenges the efficacy of wildlife market closure policy by considering cultural, socioeconomic, and legal factors for the existence of wildlife market within megadiverse countries in Latin America. Based on scientific research on the animal-to-human interface and zoonotic disease transmission, this Note suggests effective policy should incorporate a targeted species ban for reservoir species, improved sanitary measures and disease surveillance, and wildlife trafficking prevention. Ultimately, this Note calls for …

Chevron: Fueling The Right Against Title 42 And The Denial Of U.S. Asylum Rights, Nicholas Pierre-Paul Feb 2023

Chevron: Fueling The Right Against Title 42 And The Denial Of U.S. Asylum Rights, Nicholas Pierre-Paul

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

This Note was inspired by the questionable treatment of Haitian asylum seekers in Del Rio, Texas, where horseback U.S. officials charged at them using reins as whips, before immediately deporting them back to Haiti. The U.S. government justified its actions by claiming that Title 42 permits U.S. officials to prohibit the entry of individuals when there is a danger of introducing certain diseases, such as COVID-19. However, Title 42 conflicts with the United States’ codified commitment to the principle of non-refoulment, prohibiting it from returning certain refugees to a country where their life or freedom would be threatened. Accordingly, the …

Assessment Of Ring-Tailed Lemur Lemur Catta Populations In South-Western Madagascar, Sylvain Randrianjaka, Samantha Calkins, Timothy M. Sefczek, Cynthia L. Frasier, Richard Randriamampionona, Jean Claude Rakotoniaina, Lily-Arison R. De Roland, Andrea L. Baden, Edward E. Louis Jr.

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic activities are negatively affecting the flora and fauna of Madagascar, including its Endangered flagship lemur species, the ring-tailed lemur Lemur catta. Population numbers at some sites are rapidly declining, yet much of the species’ habitat is insufficiently surveyed. Because widespread population assessments are critical to guiding conservation management strategies, additional data are needed to monitor L. catta population trends and to identify the limits of their geographical range. Here we report survey results confirming the presence of this species at 65 of 83 sites in southern and south-western Madagascar, including three subpopulations that were previously considered likely to …

Positive Impacts Of Tilt: Two Professors’ Journeys In Creating More Student-Centered Teacher Education Courses, Michael Crosby, Rebecca Short

Perspectives In Learning

As the K-12 classroom changes to support the needs of our every-changing society, so should the teacher education courses change on the university level. Additionally, the focus on higher education has become more student-centered with an emphasis on transparency in teaching and learning (TILT). The purpose of this article is to highlight the positive experiences two teacher education professors had using TILT to examine assignments and course syllabi. The journey of developing transparent assignments and student-centered syllabi is time-consuming, challenging, and on-going, but the benefits of a student-centered classroom are invaluable.

Institutionalizing Tilt Across A University, Judy O. Grissett Feb 2023

Institutionalizing Tilt Across A University, Judy O. Grissett

Perspectives In Learning

Transparency of learning and teaching (TILT) is key to student success, as it allows students to understand directions and make concrete steps toward completing a set of tasks. The present paper outlines the early stages of a campus-wide program at one institution that infuses TILT practices across campus in the classroom as well as non-academic units. TILT practices make the purpose, required tasks, and criteria for success clear to students in everyday campus interactions with faculty and staff. TILT programming for faculty and staff is described, including strengths, challenges, and future directions.
