Lower Mississippi River islands experience intense flood regimes that result in a supply of sediment and seeds from upstream. The islands are some of the last remaining floodplain habitats in the Delta region, and surveying their botanical diversity is important for learning about floodplain plant community structure. From June 2020 through December 2021, I conducted a flora of six Lower Mississippi River islands from Helena-West Helena, Arkansas, to Greenville, Mississippi. I collected 2,310 plant specimens for a total of 491 taxa, including five taxa not previously recorded in Arkansas and seven not previously recorded in Mississippi. From mid-July to late-August …

Row crop agriculture in Arkansas relies predominantly on groundwater resources for irrigation. This places great demand on the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer (MRVAA), which is in a current state of decline. The Eastern Arkansas region produces commodity crops including soybeans, rice, corn, cotton, and peanuts, all of which utilize irrigation for optimal productivity. Conservation practices that reduce groundwater use include precision land leveling, multiple inlet rice irrigation, and computerized hole size selection for furrow irrigation. To collect elevation data to irrigate efficiently, these practices require precision agriculture technology, more specifically Real-Time Kinematic–Global Navigation Satellite Systems (RTK-GNSS). This exploratory study is the first of its kind and was designed to determine if Rock Steady Boxing improves the vocal quality, loudness, and quality of life of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Individuals in this study participated in the Rock Steady Boxing (RSB) program across a 12-week period. Data collection was completed twice in a pretest/posttest design to determine if there was a significant difference between the variables. The results of this study showed that the entire group (n = 13) was impacted by Rock Steady Boxing classes in terms of intensity and perceptual vocal quality. There was no statistical …

Automated irrigation systems and new management practices may help address aquifer depletion, labor shortages, and irrigation management challenges. This study evaluated the impact of various automated irrigation systems on commercial farms that produce maize, rice, and soybean. It also modeled how Early Cascade Rice Irrigation Shutoff (ECIS) performs under a range of field conditions. Growers observed various benefits of using automated systems other than irrigation savings or yield increase. Timers and remote shutoff are the most practical and beneficial options for growers willing to adopt some level of automation. Accumulation of soils and other particulate matter on the front cover glass of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules results in transmission losses that detrimentally affect the power output of PV installations. Cementation reactions occur due to interactions between the dust and the glass surface in the presence of temperature, humidity, and ph. In this study, accelerated soiling and cementation tests on glass coupons were performed using a custom instrumented soiling chamber and several standardized soils (Arizona Test Dust, Aramco Test Dust, and China Test Dust) to assess soil adhesion and cementation behaviors. Developers and users of artificial-intelligence-based tools for automatic contouring and treatment planning in radiotherapy are expected to assess clinical acceptability of these tools. However, what is 'clinical acceptability'? Quantitative and qualitative approaches have been used to assess this ill-defined concept, all of which have advantages and disadvantages or limitations. The approach chosen may depend on the goal of the study as well as on available resources. In this paper, we discuss various aspects of 'clinical acceptability' and how they can move us toward a standard for defining clinical acceptability of new autocontouring and planning tools.

Amending a Federal Rule of Civil Procedure is an act of intricate teamwork. Members of the Advisory Committee on Civil Rules must make sense of thousands of pieces of information, account for a variety of stakeholder perspectives, and anticipate the consequences of even the most modest rule change. This Article provides a unique look inside the rulemaking process, using personal interviews with Committee members, direct observations of Committee deliberations, and primary source documents to reconstruct the history of the 2020 amendment to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 30(b)(6). One long-overlooked government function is the provision of reinsurance to insurers and other private entities to help absorb catastrophic costs when losses exceed what those institutions could be expected to bear. Yet the U.S. government fails to reinsure the health plans of ordinary Americans, a step that would shield them from outlier health events. Consider, by contrast, the longstanding federal guarantee to banks and depositors against unusual liquidity risk. The lack of an explicit state-sponsored backstop for health risk is often taken to reflect a national aversion to entitlements. The C4 grass pearl millet is one of the most drought tolerant cereals and is primarily grown in marginal areas where annual rainfall is low and intermittent. It was domesticated in sub-Saharan Africa, and several studies have found that it uses a combination of morphological and physiological traits to successfully resist drought. This review explores the short term and long-term responses of pearl millet that enables it to either tolerate, avoid, escape, or recover from drought stress. Background: Among the important key modulators of the tumor microenvironment and hypoxia is a family of enzymes named carbonic anhydrases. Herein, 11 novel sulfonamide–pyridine hybrids (2–12) were designed, synthesized and biologically evaluated for their potential use in targeting breast cancer. Methods & results: The para chloro derivative 7 reported the highest cytotoxic activity against the three breast cancer cell lines used. In addition, compound 7 was found to induce cell cycle arrest and autophagy as well as delaying wound healing. The IC50 of compound 7 against carbonic anhydrase IX was 253 ± 12 nM using dorzolamide HCl as control. Conclusion: …

Eyewitness identification evidence is extremely dependent on the processes utilized by law enforcement to acquire and uphold the evidence. In 2008, the American Bar Association amended the Model Rules of Professional Conduct to address prosecutors’ post-conviction conduct. Model Rules 3.8(g) and (h) establish the remedial steps a prosecutor must take after achieving a criminal conviction when confronted with significant new evidence of an injustice. They require prosecutors to disclose the new exculpatory evidence and to take reasonable steps to initiate an investigation, and if clear and convincing evidence then establishes the convicted defendant’s innocence, the prosecutors’ office must take reasonable steps to rectify the injustice. Since then, 24 state judiciaries have adopted versions of one or both rules. Although …

“In These Times Of Compassion When Conformity’S In Fashion”: How Therapeutic Jurisprudence Can Root Out Bias, Limit Polarization, And Support Vulnerable Persons In The Legal Process, Michael L. Perlin

This Article considers the extent to which caselaw has—either explicitly or implicitly—incorporated the precepts of therapeutic jurisprudence (“TJ”), a school of legal thought that focuses on the law’s influence on emotional life and psychological well-being, and that asks us to assess the actual impact of the law on people’s lives. Two of the core tenets of TJ in practice are commitments to dignity and to compassion. I conclude ultimately that with these principles as touchstones, TJ can be an effective tool—perhaps the most effective tool—in rooting out bias, limiting polarization, and supporting vulnerable persons in the legal process. Many individuals with mental illness wish to die because the symptoms of their illness are unbearable. They shoot, suffocate, and poison themselves to make their pain go away. Because this is a statistical reality, a more certain and less violent means of death should be legalized. This Comment advocates for the legalization of physician-assisted suicide (“PAS”). As of 2022, nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized PAS for terminal illness, but this Comment argues that all fifty states should legalize PAS and not only for terminal illness, but for chronic mental illness as well. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (“ESA”) is among the most powerful environmental statutes passed in U.S. history and serves as a blueprint for government-sanctioned conservation efforts globally. At its core, the ESA seeks to protect listed plant and animal species by prohibiting actions that harm their chances of survival. While the ESA has generally succeeded in pursuing this goal as implemented, it has also led to a host of problems that undermine its effectiveness and generated widespread discontent among conflicting, disparate stakeholders, including environmentalists, industry groups, government agencies, and private landowners. Upcycling involves deconstructing pre-owned pieces of clothing, jewelry, and accessories and using the deconstructed materials to create “new” fashion items. While this practice is popular among those looking to make environmentally conscious shopping choices, it is incompatible with our current trademark statutes and common law doctrines.
