The Influence Of Knowledge And Value On Nursing Students' Quality Of Supportive Feedback To Peers, Joni L. Tornwall Feb 2023

The Influence Of Knowledge And Value On Nursing Students' Quality Of Supportive Feedback To Peers, Joni L. Tornwall

Dissertations

Peer review in nursing is an expectation of every registered nurse in the workplace, and it is essential to accountability and self-regulation of practice in the nursing discipline. However, the literature reveals that professional nurses and nursing students feel peer review is not their responsibility. Research has shown that they state they do not have time to do it, and they feel unprepared for and anxious about the process of providing good feedback to peers. Academic nursing programs should be teaching future nurses to participate in peer review and recognize its value to professional nursing practice. Training in peer review …

Periodicities And Plasma Density Structure Of Jupiter’S Dawnside Magnetosphere, Xuanye Ma, A.A. Schok, P.A. Delamere, B. Mino, P.A. Damiano, B. Zhang, A. Sciola

Publications

The ability to quantify variations in magnetic field topology and density within Jupiter’s magnetosphere is an important step in understanding the overall structure and dynamics. The Juno spacecraft has provided a rich data set in the dawnside magnetosphere. The recent Grid Agnostic MHD for Extended Research Applications (GAMERA) global simulation study by Zhang et al. (2021) showed a highly structured plasmadisc with closed magnetic field lines mapping between the outer dawn-tail flank and the high latitude polar region. To test these model predictions, we examined Juno’s magnetic field data and electron/energetic particle data to categorize portions of orbits 1-15 into …

The Pro Se Gender Gap, Roger Michalski Feb 2023

The Pro Se Gender Gap, Roger Michalski

Brooklyn Law Review

This article is the first to identify, name, and empirically measure the pro se gender gap. Drawing on a massive dataset of all federal civil dockets spanning ten years, it finds a 2-to-1 gender imbalance. For every federal woman pro se litigant there are two males. This finding is robust and stable. It holds true for plaintiffs, defendants, and other parties. It is also true across most subject areas, time, length of litigation, and across states, districts, and circuits. The study excludes prisoner-rights and habeas petitions–including them would widen the gender gap even further. This gender gap reveals a troubling …

Sperm Dna Integrity In Absolute Teratozoospermia Patients And Its Impact On Assisted Reproductive Technology Outcome, Dina Faris

Theses and Dissertations

Sperm DNA Fragmentation (SDF) is a common cause of male infertility, although it is underdiagnosed due to lack of routine testing. High levels of SDF are reported in men with abnormal sperm morphology. However, the implications of such findings on live birth following Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) have not been studied in absolute teratozoospermia men (100% abnormal sperm morphology). In this prospective study, the severity of DNA damage was evaluated in absolute teratozoospermia patients and its impact on ICSI outcomes, particularly live birth rate. My study included 36 men with absolute teratozoospermia and 30 men with normal sperm. Real-time assessment …

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (SCA1) is a dominant trinucleotide repeat neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor dysfunction, cognitive impairment, and premature death. Degeneration of cerebellar Purkinje cells is a frequent and prominent pathological feature of SCA1. We previously showed that transport of ATXN1 to Purkinje cell nuclei is required for pathology, where mutant ATXN1 alters transcription. To examine the role of ATXN1 nuclear localization broadly in SCA1-like disease pathogenesis, CRISPR-Cas9 was used to develop a mouse with an amino acid alteration (K772T) in the nuclear localization sequence of the expanded ATXN1 protein. Characterization of these mice indicates that proper nuclear localization …

A Marine Plastic Cloud - Global Mass Balance Assessment Of Oceanic Plastic Pollution, Peter T. Harris, Thomas Maes, Karen Raubenheimer, J. P. Walsh

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

To improve our understanding and management of marine plastic pollution of the ocean, a total plastic budget is needed which quantifies the sources and sinks, as well as inputs and removal of plastic per unit time. The current state of knowledge indicates that the coastal zone and ocean water column are major locations for plastic pollution, but the fate of much of this must ultimately be the deep ocean floor. We reviewed 23 journal articles that provide 280 observations of deep-sea sediment microplastic concentration across six different off-shelf environments. We calculate the following mean concentrations of microplastic particles (number) per …

Human brain activity generates scalp potentials (electroencephalography - EEG), intracranial potentials (iEEG), and external magnetic fields (magnetoencephalography - MEG). These electrophysiology (e-phys) signals can often be measured simultaneously for research and clinical applications. The forward problem involves modeling these signals at their sensors for a given equivalent current dipole configuration within the brain. While earlier researchers modeled the head as a simple set of isotropic spheres, today's magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data allow for a detailed anatomic description of brain structures and anisotropic characterization of tissue conductivities. We present a complete pipeline, integrated into the Brainstorm software, that allows users …

Progressive accumulation of α-Synuclein (αSyn) in Lewy bodies (LBs) and loss of dopaminergic (DA) neurons are the hallmark pathological features of Parkinson's disease (PD). Although currently available in vitro and in vivo models have provided crucial information about PD pathogenesis, the mechanistic link between the progressive accumulation of αSyn into LBs and the loss of DA neurons is still unclear. To address this, it is critical to model LB formation and DA neuron loss, the two key neuropathological aspects of PD, in a relevant in vitro system. In this study, we developed a human midbrain-like organoid (hMBO) model of PD. …

Waking Immune-Resistant Tumors With Neddylation, Kristin Huntoon, Wen Jiang, Betty Ys Kim

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The CD47/signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) axis, which functions as an inhibitory phagocytosis checkpoint, also serves as a key mediator in cancer immune evasion. Many cancers, including colorectal cancer (CRC), exploit the expression of CD47 to escape phagocytic clearance and activate the innate immune system. Previous work has indicated that distinct paradigms of posttranslational modifications mediate the regulatory mechanisms of the CD47/SIRPα axis. In this issue of the JCI, Li et al. show that neddylation, a ubiquitin-like modification, inactivates Src homology region 2-containing protein tyrosine phosphatase 2 (SHP2), a downstream target of this pathway. They further show that inhibition of …

EphA2 tyrosine kinase is upregulated in many cancers and correlated with poor survival of patients, including those with endometrial cancer. EphA2-targeted drugs have shown modest clinical benefit. To improve the therapeutic response to such drugs, we performed a high-throughput chemical screen to discover novel synergistic partners for EphA2-targeted therapeutics. Our screen identified the Wee1 kinase inhibitor, MK1775, as a synergistic partner to EphA2, and this finding was confirmed using both in vitro and in vivo experiments. We hypothesized that Wee1 inhibition would sensitize cells to EphA2-targeted therapy. Combination treatment decreased cell viability, induced apoptosis, and reduced clonogenic potential in endometrial …

Itch is a common skin symptom, with complex aetiology and pathogenesis. It is mediated by 2 pathways, the histaminergic and non-histaminergic pathways. Chronic itch is understood to be processed by the latter and is difficult to treat with traditional pruritus therapies. The Janus kinase and signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway is a signalling mechanism that regulates gene expression through various cytokines. Janus kinase inhibitors, which have been tested and used for several autoimmune diseases, have also been shown to be effective for itch through clinical trials and case reports. Janus kinase inhibitors could be a good choice for …

Background: Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are an effective therapeutic strategy, improving the survival of patients with lung cancer compared with conventional treatments. However, novel predictive biomarkers are needed to stratify which patients derive clinical benefit because the currently used and highly heterogenic histological PD-L1 has shown low accuracy. Liquid biopsy is the analysis of biomarkers in body fluids and represents a minimally invasive tool that can be used to monitor tumor evolution and treatment effects, potentially reducing biases associated with tumor heterogeneity associated with tissue biopsies. In this context, cytokines, such as transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), can be found free in …
