Brightness-mode (B-mode) ultrasonography is a popular tool to examine anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSA) and echo intensity (EI). Muscle ACSA and EI provide valuable insight into muscle function due to their unique mechanisms which influence performance. Manually analyzing ultrasound images potentially increases variability which may increase error, thus decreasing the reliability of manual image analysis. Recently an automated program was created to improve reliability and reduce the time of ultrasound image analysis. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reliability of manual compared to automatic ultrasound analyses of muscle cross-sectional area and echo intensity. METHODS: Twenty-two …

Previous studies suggest impaired baroreflex function in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is critically important since it leads to an increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events. Currently, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. The baroreflex, essential for maintaining blood pressure homeostasis, can also be influenced by several risk factors, one of which is obesity. Obesity has been shown to markedly decrease baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in non-diabetic individuals, and given that the majority of T2D patients are obese, it is likely that impairment in baroreflex function in T2D is mainly driven by obesity. PURPOSE: To investigate the effects …

Vascular Insulin Resistance May Contribute To Health Disparities In People From The Rio Grande Valley, Philippe J. Dentino, Ryan P. Bialaszewski, Yu Lun Tai, Ryan D. Russell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Microvascular blood flow (MBF) increases postprandially in skeletal muscle in response to insulin to aid in myocyte glucose delivery. This MBF response is considered a measure of vascular insulin resistance and can be impaired with altered meal composition, obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and insulin resistance. Current studies indicate this MBF response to a mixed meal challenge (MMC) may identify vascular insulin resistance before typically-presenting serum biomarkers of insulin resistance, as it displays more sensitivity than when using an oral glucose challenge (OGC). However, it is unknown if healthy adults residing in the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), an area …

Postprandial And Fasting Lipopolysaccharide Levels In Healthy Hispanic Residents Of Southeast Texas With Positive Family History Of Type 2 Diabetes, Amanda J. Wheeler, Yu Lun Tai, Smaran Marupudi, Ryan D. Russell
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
PURPOSE: Healthy people with a family history (FH+) of type 2 diabetes (T2D) display impaired metabolic and microvascular function prior to glucose intolerance, and are at greater risk for developing T2D. While mechanisms to explain this disparity are lacking, it is possible that intestinal permeability plays a role, as it is also linked with insulin resistance, glucose intolerance, and chronic inflammation. Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) act as an outer membrane component of gram-negative bacteria in intestines and play a role in inflammation and chronic disease when in circulation, thus serving as a surrogate measure of intestinal permeability. However, the link between FH+ …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The standard protocol to assess hydration status is by measuring body mass in the early morning without controlling fluid intake. However, obtaining first-morning body mass is not necessarily feasible for many situations, for example, most physical activities take place in the afternoon. Thus, first-morning body mass might not be practical to assess hydration status. PURPOSE: To investigate first-morning body mass versus afternoon body mass in free- living and controlled euhydration. METHODS: 9 males (age: 21 ± 2; mass: 79.7 ± 17.8 kg) and 5 females (age: 22 ± 2; mass: 60.5 ± 13.6 kg) visited the laboratory in …
The Impact Of A Mindfulness Application (App) On The Mental Health Of Injured College Athletes Experiencing Chronic Pain, Sophia Ramirez, Amber M. Shipherd
The Impact Of A Mindfulness Application (App) On The Mental Health Of Injured College Athletes Experiencing Chronic Pain, Sophia Ramirez, Amber M. Shipherd
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Experiencing an injury can cause negative effects on an athlete’s mental health, including depression and anxiety, decreased self-esteem, isolation, loss of identity, and fear. Some athletes may experience chronic pain after an injury, defined as pain that lasts beyond the normal timespan of healing over three months, not including tissue damage. Most research on the psychological effects of sport injuries have focused on acute injuries rather than chronic injuries. Mindfulness, the ability of being fully present in a moment in time in one’s body, paying attention to physical sensations and feelings, has been found to improve mental health outcomes in …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Many dietary supplements are marketed with gendered terms, such as “for her” and “for him.” However, whether these statements reflect different nutrient contents of products and a biological basis has not been systematically examined. PURPOSE: The purpose of this analysis was to compare the micronutrient content of dietary supplements that are sold in separate forms based on gendered marketing. METHODS: The National Institutes of Health Dietary Supplements Label Database (DSLD) was searched using gendered terms, such as “hers,” “her,” “women,” “his,” “him,” and “men.” Eighty-nine pairs of micronutrient-containing products that were commercially available as a women’s version and a men’s …

Test anxiety is a specific type of state anxiety when a person experiences perceived pressure to excel on a test. Test anxiety not only hinders test performance, but the person's long term psychophysiological health. Many students struggle with test anxiety, but females have a higher incidence of test anxiety than males. Bouts of aerobic exercise have been shown to decrease state anxiety, but no work has been done examining the effects of resistant training on state anxiety. PURPOSE: the purpose of this study was to compare the effects of acute aerobic and resistance exercise bouts on test anxiety among …

Skeletal Muscle Desaturation During Moderate And Severe Intensity Cycling Exercise Is Related To Half-Time From The Reactive Hyperemia Response, Jacob R. Dellinger, Joaquin Gonzales
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Reactive hyperemia responses are a common method for assessing peripheral microvascular function, and the half-time reperfusion response, in particular, has been shown to be highly reproducible and sensitive to vascular dysfunction associated with disease. It is unclear, however, whether this parameter also provides information about microvascular responses during exercise. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between reactive hyperemia half-time response and the change in skeletal muscle oxygenation during cycling exercise. METHODS: Thirty young adults (20 men, 10 women; Age: 23 ± 5 y; peak VO2: 35.4 ± 4.4 ml/kg/min) completed a …

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an important determinant of endurance performance. Heat acclimation/acclimatization (HA/HAz) strategies elicit improvements in endurance performance. When heat exposure is reduced, intermittent heat training (IHT) is potentially beneficial to alleviate HA/HAz adaptation decay, however corresponding VO2max responses are unknown. PURPOSE: To determine the effects of HA/HAz and IHT on VO2max in endurance runners and identify how long VO2max adaptations remain following removal of repeated heat exposure. METHODS: Twenty-seven male endurance runners (mean ± SD; age, 36 ± 12 years; body mass, 73.03 ± 8.97 kg; height, 178.81 ± 6.39 cm; VO …

A substantial portion of the world’s population may be inadequately hydrated, and dehydration is associated with several disease states and acute impairments in exercise performance. As such, there is continued interest in novel strategies to promote adequate hydration. The carbohydrate alpha-cyclodextrin has recently been shown to enhance water uptake through human aquaporins expressed in a single-cell model and promote longevity in model multicellular organisms. However, there is no relevant human research examining the potential hydrating effects of alpha-cyclodextrin-containing beverages. PURPOSE: To determine if novel beverage formulations containing alpha-cyclodextrin improve a bioimpedance-based hydration marker in humans. METHODS: In a …

Menstrual regularity is a key indicator of energy availability, long-term bone density, and other important health information in females. The occurrence of a regular menstrual cycle indicates that an individual’s level of estrogen is supportive of strong bones and that they are achieving the caloric intake required to support their activity level. In contrast, an irregular menstrual cycle can be indicative of insufficient energy availability which may, over time, result in low bone mineral density and thus a higher risk of bone stress injuries. However, hormonal contraceptive use, including the rising use of intrauterine devices (IUDs), may mask these changes …

A Venn diagram decision tool consisting of weight, urine color, and thirst (WUT) is suggested to measure hydration status. The WUT Venn diagram has been used as a practical hydration status assessment tool; however, this relationship has only been investigated using a first-morning urine sample. PURPOSE: To investigate relationships between morning and afternoon WUT criteria, blood and urine markers. METHODS: Eight men (age: 21 ± 3; mass: 76.3 ± 15.6 kg) and five women (age: 22 ± 2; mass: 60.5 ± 13.6 kg) completed the study. Body mass, urine color, urine specific gravity (USG), urine osmolality (UOSM …
