Journal of Global Business Insights

The main objective of the study is to investigate factors influencing the green purchase intention of Algerian consumers using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Furthermore, it aims to examine the impacts of subjective norms, consumer attitude, environmental knowledge, and green label variable to the consumer purchase intention. The authors proposed the model of TPB that combines three constructs namely attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. The subjective norms and consumer attitude variables were directly adopted from the TPB Model. In addition, environmental knowledge and green label variables were added based on the review of the literature. The study …

Error Aversions And Due Process, Brandon L. Garrett, Gregory Mitchell Mar 2023

Error Aversions And Due Process, Brandon L. Garrett, Gregory Mitchell

Michigan Law Review

William Blackstone famously expressed the view that convicting the innocent constitutes a much more serious error than acquitting the guilty. This view is the cornerstone of due process protections for those accused of crimes, giving rise to the presumption of innocence and the high burden of proof required for criminal convictions. While most legal elites share Blackstone’s view, the citizen jurors tasked with making due process protections a reality do not share the law’s preference for false acquittals over false convictions.

Across multiple national surveys sampling more than 12,000 people, we find that a majority of Americans consider false acquittals …

Pocket Police: The Plain Feel Doctrine Thirty Years Later, Kelly Recker Mar 2023

Pocket Police: The Plain Feel Doctrine Thirty Years Later, Kelly Recker

Michigan Law Review

The idea that a police officer can park in a low-income neighborhood, pull someone over because of their race, frisk everyone in the car, let them go if their pockets are empty, and do the whole thing over and over again until the officer finds something illegal seems deeply upsetting and violative, to say the least. And yet, pretextual traffic stops are constitutional per a unanimous Supreme Court in Whren v. United States, 517 U.S. 806 (1996), as is seizing obvious contraband during a frisk per Minnesota v. Dickerson, 508 U.S. 366 (1993). In the thirty years since …

Justice Without Power: Yemen And The Global Legal System, Amulya Vadapalli Mar 2023

Justice Without Power: Yemen And The Global Legal System, Amulya Vadapalli

Michigan Law Review

The war in Yemen has remained the world’s worst humanitarian crisis since 2015, and yet it is shockingly invisible. The global legal system fails to offer a clear avenue through which the Yemeni people can hold the state actors responsible for their harm accountable. This Note analyzes international legal mechanisms for vindicating war crimes and human rights abuses perpetrated in Yemen. Through the lens of Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, it highlights gaps in the global legal structure, proposes alternative accountability processes, and uses a variety of sources—including interviews with practitioners and Arabic language legal scholarship—to explicate a victim-centered transitional justice process …

One Step Further: Why Investing In Prison Programming And Treatment Is Key To Passing Criminal Justice Reform, Madeline Todd Mar 2023

One Step Further: Why Investing In Prison Programming And Treatment Is Key To Passing Criminal Justice Reform, Madeline Todd

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In 2018, Congress passed the First Step Act ("FSA 2018"), which is considered one of the most applaudable efforts in modern history, aiming to reduce federal prison populations. While the Act has made progress in decreasing incarceration rates over the last few years, the pace of reform to reverse the nearly forty-year-long effect of the "War on Drugs" is slow. Past attempts, such as shortened sentences, provide a temporary solution but ultimately fail to keep the prisoner from reoffending.

A comprehensive evaluation of what produces significant results that would expedite the end of mass incarceration is timely due. This Note …

Hypoxic Incubator Control System, Marina Zellers, Jennifer Rojas, Derek Tran Mar 2023

Hypoxic Incubator Control System, Marina Zellers, Jennifer Rojas, Derek Tran

Biomedical Engineering

This paper describes the functionality of the current Hypoxic Incubator, a project started by BMED graduate students Simone Helfrich and Makenzie Jones, with the objective being to redesign the device to address potential areas of improvement. The hypoxic incubator has been designed to allow for the control of the O2, CO2, and N2 levels such that researchers can grow and study cell culture in hypoxic conditions; however, its efficacy and efficiency are limited by the fact that it often overshoots the desired setpoints for O2 and CO2 in addition to being difficult to …

Postpartum Hemorrhage Detection Device, Kaitlyn Bailey, Adrian Diaz, Alcides Caballero Mar 2023

Postpartum Hemorrhage Detection Device, Kaitlyn Bailey, Adrian Diaz, Alcides Caballero

Biomedical Engineering

During a cesarean section, blood loss greater than 1000 mL is classified as a hemorrhage. Quantified blood loss methods are used to detect hemorrhage, however existing methods are inaccurate and time consuming. Our proposed device is inserted vaginally during a cesarean section to collect and quantify blood lost via the cervix during and after the procedure. The device also applies light suction to the uterus, which can aid in uterus collapse and decrease the risk of postpartum hemorrhage.

Biomaterials Redesign Of Microvascular Anastomotic Coupler, Nick Glatter, Sophie Jackson, Samuel Leingang Mar 2023

Biomaterials Redesign Of Microvascular Anastomotic Coupler, Nick Glatter, Sophie Jackson, Samuel Leingang

Biomedical Engineering

The key factors in the redesign of this part include the use of biomaterials, the redesign of the part geometry to include these biomaterials, and the proposition of production scale manufacturing methods suitable for these redesigns. The choice of biodegradable material was guided by previous literature, during which we found the PLGA polymer used in similar predicate devices with a biodegradability timeline similar to our goals. The model of coupler serving as the inspiration for the redesign utilizes two very strong but bioinert materials, polyethylene, and stainless steel. These high strength materials can withstand much greater forces than the biodegradable …

Paso Robles Children's Museum Redesign, Hannah O. Chan, Shreya Hambir Mar 2023

Paso Robles Children's Museum Redesign, Hannah O. Chan, Shreya Hambir

Graphic Communication

For this project, we plan to redesign the Paso Robles Children's Museum website, utilizing Squarespace. Currently, the website has an outdated look and feel, and the information is somewhat disorganized. Having intuitive navigation is a crucial part of good user experience, as users should not have to dig through the site to find what they are looking for (Hallman, 2022). In our redesign, we plan to regroup related content into sections that mimic websites of other established museums, so the structure is more familiar. The other main issue we want to address is the site’s aesthetic; our goal is to …

Assessing The Utility Of Procedural Modeling For The Urban Planning Discipline: Cityengine And Missing Middle Housing, Riley A. Nelson, Trevor K. Winnard Mar 2023

Assessing The Utility Of Procedural Modeling For The Urban Planning Discipline: Cityengine And Missing Middle Housing, Riley A. Nelson, Trevor K. Winnard

City and Regional Planning

In recent years, procedural modeling techniques have been introduced to the urban planning discipline. By enabling the quick generation of design alternatives, these methods have the potential to expedite the public participation process. In this study, we explore ArcGIS CityEngine, an Esri procedural modeling software, and its application for depicting new missing middle housing developments in San Luis Obispo, California. Missing middle housing is an abstract planning concept and the public may benefit from 3D visualizations of the typology contextualized within their own neighborhood. To this end, we procedurally model two existing missing middle developments in San Luis Obispo and …

Election Administration Concerns Meet Claims Of A Fraudulent Election: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The 2020 Presidential Election And Its Aftermath In Wisconsin, Joe Franke Mar 2023

Election Administration Concerns Meet Claims Of A Fraudulent Election: A Comprehensive Analysis Of The 2020 Presidential Election And Its Aftermath In Wisconsin, Joe Franke

Marquette Law Review

The 2020 presidential election unearthed valid questions about how the election was administered and whether various state laws were properly followed. However, President Donald Trump and his closest allies routinely fail to distinguish between questions about whether state officials correctly interpreted and applied the state’ s election code and actual fraud or malfeasance. There is a significant difference between accusing election officials of wrongly interpreting state law or incorrectly implementing election procedures, and alleging that those same officials intended to rig the outcome. Failure to make this distinction has contributed to the stolen election narrative, which continues to roil the …

Winds of massive stars are suspected to be inhomogeneous (or clumpy), which biases the measures of their mass-loss rates. In high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), the compact object can be used as an orbiting X-ray point source to probe the wind and constrain its clumpiness. We perform a spectrotiming analysis of the HMXB OAO 1657–415 with nonsimultaneous NuSTAR and NICER observations. We compute the hardness ratio from the energy-resolved light curves, and, using an adaptive rebinning technique, we thus select appropriate time segments to search for rapid spectral variations on timescales of a few hundred to thousands of seconds. The column …

A Genealogy Of Open, Betsy Yoon Mar 2023

A Genealogy Of Open, Betsy Yoon

Publications and Research

The term open has become a familiar part of library and education practice and discourse, with open source software being a common referent. However, the conditions surrounding the emergence of the open source movement are not well understood within librarianship. After identifying capitalism and neoliberalism as structures that shape library and open practice, this article contextualizes the term open by delineating the discursive struggle within the free software movement that led to the emergence of the open source movement. An understanding of the genealogy of open can lend clarity to many of the contradictions that have been grappled with in …
