What Black Students Need From White Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry, Renee Sherie Andrews
What Black Students Need From White Teachers: A Qualitative Inquiry, Renee Sherie Andrews
Theses and Dissertations
Black high school students who attend majority-white schools are educated in environments that are contradictory to their cultural backgrounds. Because the teachers at these high schools tend to be mostly white, Black students in these environments t typically feel a lack of connection or that they do not belong. In this qualitative study, I explored the relationships between Black students and their white teachers. Data sources for this study included interviews of both Black students and their teachers. From the data, I found that Black high school students need the following from their teachers: (1) check in on them regularly; …
Investigating Heterologous Transgene Expression In N. Crassa, James Christopher Mierendorf
Investigating Heterologous Transgene Expression In N. Crassa, James Christopher Mierendorf
Theses and Dissertations
First adopted as a model organism by Shear and Dodge in 1927, the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa is among the most well studied eukaryotic systems today, facilitating major discoveries in genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. The sequencing of the Neurospora genome was completed in 2003, which combined with the organism’s fast growth, simple culturing requirements, and haploid life cycle, make it a particularly attractive model system. Despite these advantages, Neurospora crassa’s research value is diminished by its recalcitrance to expressing ectopic sequences incorporated into its genome. As a result, molecular techniques requiring heterologous expression (such as CRISPR) are largely incompatible …

I Do, You Do, We Do: Co-Teachers’ Perspectives Of Self-Determination For Students With Dis/Abilities, Jenna Theofield
Theses & Dissertations
Self-determination plays a vital role in the educational journey of students with a dis/ability. However, opportunities to cultivate self-determining skills for elementary students with dis/abilities in an inclusive co-taught classroom are limited. This can be attributed to the intersectionality of ableism and ageism, two oppressive societal constructs that elementary coteachers may consciously or subconsciously hold. Since the inception of educating students with dis/abilities in their least restrictive environments, co-teaching classrooms have been deemed as the most appropriate setting for many students considering the continuum of special education services. The purpose of this study was to examine how elementary co-teaching teams …

Pyrus calleryana (Callery pear) is an invasive plant that threatens ecosystems in the eastern United States. We investigated the efficacy of various control techniques on P. calleryana invasion in grasslands. Treatments were applied to (a) P. calleryana stems that had experienced mowing annually for several years and were sprouting (n = 100 stems; “trees-sprouting”) and (b) stems that had established ca. 10 years earlier, had never been cut, and were single-stemmed trees (n = 40 stems; “trees-intact”). In both experiments, existing stems were cut and randomly assigned one of the following treatments: cut only (control), burning, freezing, or herbicide, and …
The Problem Of Class Abstractionism, Michael A. Mccarthy, Mathieu Hikaru Desan
The Problem Of Class Abstractionism, Michael A. Mccarthy, Mathieu Hikaru Desan
Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
With renewed interest in Marxism, class is back on the intellectual agenda. But so too is the familiar charge of “class reductionism.” This charge conflates two distinct claims regarding what we term the structural and political primacy of class. Structural primacy refers to the determinant role of class in social explanation, whereas political primacy refers to its centrality in radical politics. Crossing these distinct claims, we identify four possible positions on the primacy of class. Here, we focus on the two that affirm the structural primacy of class. What we call “class abstractionism,” which presumes to derive the political primacy …

Bottom Line Up Front (BLUF): Members of the DHS workforce and terrorism researchers are systematically exposed to the propaganda, ideologies, and psychologies of actors who seek to launch terrorist attacks. This content is inherently value-laden and possibly personally troubling, causing these individuals to confront potential violations of their “sacred” or “protected” values such as the preservation of life (e.g., Tetlock et al., 2000). Here we present the result of a Rapid Evidence Assessment (REA) which sought to review research across multiple fields of work in which individuals are exposed to traumatic imagery, or events. This REA found that there is …

Hydrogen (H2) is currently considered a clean fuel to decrease anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and will play a vital role in climate change mitigation. Nevertheless, one of the primary challenges of achieving a complete H2 economy is the large-scale storage of H2, which is unsafe on the surface because H2 is highly compressible, volatile, and flammable. Hydrogen storage in geological formations could be a potential solution to this problem because of the abundance of such formations and their high storage capacities. Wettability plays a critical role in the displacement of formation water and determines …

Paleoclimatological information derived from the study of lacustrine sedimentary records is not only biased by taphonomical processes but also by potential differences in the expression of climate variability in the sediments due to site-specific factors. Using a multiproxy approach (the elemental and isotopic compositions of organic matter, diatom assemblages, and marker pigments of algae and cyanobacteria), we study the different environmental signatures recorded since the Little Ice Age (LIA) in the sediments of two volcanic lakes located within the same caldera on São Miguel Island (Azores Archipelago). Lake Santiago is a crater lake whose eutrophic status in the last stage …

The capability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for sparse representation has significant application to complex tasks like Representation Learning (RL). However, labelled datasets of sufficient size for learning this representation are not easily obtainable. The unsupervised learning capability of Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) provide a promising solution to this issue through their capacity to learn representations for novel data samples and classification tasks. In this research, a texture-based latent space disentanglement technique is proposed to enhance learning of representations for novel data samples. A comparison is performed among different VAEs and GANs with the proposed approach …

In recent years, sustainability concerns have gained increasing attention among countries and stakeholders worldwide. Towards the transition to sustainable rural development, the rural web framework (RWF) has become a consistent tool. Indicators from the RWF have been used to explore sustainable rural development for decision-making tasks, which improves the social, economic, and environmental performance of rural regions. However, the application of the RWF in studies is on the decline. Furthermore, there is a lack of literature reviews on the importance of the RWF and its relationship with different facets of sustainable development. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) (a) …

Slow food movement gave rise to subsequent movements including Cittáslow and slow tourism. This emphasises a steady state mindful approach to travel and consumption patterns. With consideration for pressing issues like overtourism, mass tourism and the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is pertinent to discuss viable alternatives to a fast-paced life and travel that we consider normal. One such alternative is slow tourism that accentuates sustainable tourism practices as well as tourism at a reduced pace. It endorses mindfulness in travelling and discovering destinations in a responsible manner. Furthermore, slow travel aims to promote tourists' consumption-oriented enjoyment of experience …

Klebsiella pneumoniae is listed by the WHO as a priority pathogen of extreme importance that can cause serious consequences in clinical settings. Due to its increasing multidrug resistance all over the world, K. pneumoniae has the potential to cause extremely difficult-To-Treat infections. Therefore, rapid and accurate identification of multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae in clinical diagnosis is important for its prevention and infection control. However, the limitations of conventional and molecular methods significantly hindered the timely diagnosis of the pathogen. As a label-free, noninvasive, and low-cost method, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy has been extensively studied for its application potentials in the …
The Legal Ethics Of Family Separation, Milan Markovic
The Legal Ethics Of Family Separation, Milan Markovic

On April 6, 2018, the Trump administration announced a “zero tolerance” policy for individuals who crossed the U.S. border illegally. As part of this policy, the administration prosecuted parents with minor children for unlawful entry; previous administrations generally placed families in civil removal proceedings. Since U.S. law does not allow children to be held in immigration detention facilities pending their parents’ prosecution, the new policy caused thousands of children to be separated from their parents. Hundreds of families have yet to be reunited.
Despite a consensus that the family separation policy was cruel and ineffective, there has been minimal focus …
Reconceiving Argument Schemes As Descriptive And Practically Normative, Brian N. Larson, David Seth Morrison
Reconceiving Argument Schemes As Descriptive And Practically Normative, Brian N. Larson, David Seth Morrison
Faculty Scholarship
We propose a revised definition of “argument scheme” that focuses on describing argumentative performances and normative assessments that occur within an argumentative context, the social context in which the scheme arises. Our premise-and-conclusion structure identifies the typical instantiation of an argument in the argumentative context, and our critical framework describes a set of normative assessments available to participants in the context, what we call practically normative assessments. We distinguish this practical normativity from the rationally or universally normative assessment that might be imposed from outside the argumentative context. Thus, the practical norms represented in an argument scheme may still be …

Defeating De Facto Disenfranchisement Of Criminal Defendants, Neil Sobol
Faculty Scholarship
In a democracy, voting is not only an important civic duty but also a right that governments owe to their citizens. However, by operation of law, forty-eight states deny voting rights to individuals based on criminal convictions. Activists and scholars attack de jure disenfranchisement as an improper collateral consequence that disproportionately impacts people of color. Although recent years show substantial reforms to reenfranchise defendants, an estimated 5.17 million defendants remained ineligible to vote in 2020.
While efforts to address de jure disenfranchisement remain necessary, a problem that has received considerably less attention is the de facto disenfranchisement of criminal defendants …

Racial Equality, Religious Liberty, And The Complications Of Pluralism, Rachel F. Moran

Constitutional law scholar Laurence Tribe once described due process and equal protection as “a legal double helix.” By this, he meant that protections for substantive liberties coupled with principles of equal treatment created “a single, unfolding tale of equal liberty and increasingly universal dignity.” In his view, equality and liberty were mutually constitutive and “center[ed] on a quest for genuine self-government of groups small and large.” Although this optimistic account of the nation’s constitutional DNA is reassuring, Professor Sahar Aziz’s new book on “The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom” reminds us that the double helix can unravel, so …

Argumentation as the public exchange of reasons is widely thought to enhance deliberative interactions that generate and justify reasonable public policies. Adopting an argumentation-theoretic perspective, we survey the norms that should govern public argumentation and address some of the complexities that scholarly treatments have identified. Our focus is on norms associated with the ideals of correctness and participation as sources of a politically legitimate deliberative outcome. In principle, both ideals are mutually coherent. If the information needed for a correct deliberative outcome is distributed among agents, then maximising participation increases information diversity. But both ideals can also be in tension. …

This essay describes an approach to peer review and classroom workshopping intended to develop a community of inquiry in the first-year law school classroom, center students’ own rhetorical knowledge, and establish the authority of students—especially minoritized students—as rhetorical agents. The technique described in this essay works from the presumption that each student who comes to law school comes with rich rhetorical experience. In other words, they have extensive experience constructing discourse suited to certain audiences and certain contexts. They use a variety of tools to construct such discourse, including linguistic registers (or styles) and rhetorical genres (such as the academic …

Increasing Social Media Equity Of A Brand By Developing Social Media Capabilities And Consumer Promotions, Manisha Mathur
AMTP Proceedings 2023
Existing literature identifies the role of customers in promoting a brand on social media and in providing recommendations to others customers based on their own experiences with the brand. The recent focus on using social media has led to most firms becoming effective in using social media to develop customer communities, becoming content providers unlike traditional advertisers, and focusing on conversing with consumers rather than directing marketing messages at them (Barwise and Meehan, 2010). In this research, we conceptualize social media equity as comprising of a brand’s associations with customers on social media, quality perceptions of the retailer brand on …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background:
A core aspect of midwifery philosophy is the optimisation of normal physiology; however, this has been challenged as a radical idea in the medicalisation of birth. Research has demonstrated the benefits of midwifery in improving outcomes for both mothers and babies. The understanding of midwifery benefits fails to reach wider sociocultural contexts as births becomes more medicalised. Midwifery research requires an action arm, to help translate theory to practice and mobilise midwives in solidarity with women towards action and change.
Aim:
The aim of this article is to describe a Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) by establishing the philosophical …

The ability of seagrass meadows to filter nutrients and capture and store CO2 and nutrients in the form of organic carbon (OC) and nitrogen (N) in their sediments may help to mitigate local eutrophication as well as climate change via meadow restoration and protection. This study assesses OC and N sediment stocks (top 50 cm) and sequestration rates within Danish eelgrass meadows. At four locations, eelgrass-vegetated and nearby unvegetated plots were studied in protected and exposed areas. The average OC and N sediment 50 cm stocks were 2.6 ± 0.3 kg OC m − 2 and 0.23 ± 0.01 …

The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) has commonly been investigated in isolation, however, within practice multiple modalities are commonly incorporated. However, the NHE has a low level of compliance within sport, with sprinting being potentially being preferred. The present study aimed to observe the effect of a lower-limb program with either additional NHE or sprinting on the modifiable risk factors hamstring strain injury (HSI) and athletic performance. 38 collegiate athletes were randomly assigned into three groups: control standardised lower-limb training program (n = 10 (2 female, 8 male), age = 23.50 ± 2.95 years, height = 1.75 ± 0.09 m, mass …
