Pure And Undefiled Religion: Ministry To Widows In The American Church Today, Holli R. Reeves Mar 2023

Pure And Undefiled Religion: Ministry To Widows In The American Church Today, Holli R. Reeves

Theology Undergraduate Work

Within the more than 300,000 Christian congregations in the United States, very few ministries exist for the marginalized, especially for widows. Considering that over 900,000 adults in the United States are widowed each year, the lack of care and support available within Christian congregations for widows is alarming. The neglect of care and support available for widows within Christian congregations in the United States today is specifically important to address as care for the marginalized—the orphan, the widow, and the foreigner—is a frequent topic in the Bible and, therefore, a subject especially near to the heart of God. This research …

Practicing Presence: How The Local Church Should Target Poverty Of Solidarity With Their Neighborhood’S Youth, Sarah Lowder

Theology Undergraduate Work

A high school student attends a youth group at a local church in his neglected neighborhood. He participates in Bible studies, youth group events, and experiences an altar-call moment to accept Christ into his heart. The church was there to help him live like Christ and grow spiritually. He gets to know God at an early age through the church; however, as he graduates high school, the connection with the church starts to dwindle. One day, he finds himself in jail, still struggling with his life's physical, mental, and social factors. This is the true story of Nick, a young …

Era Project Faq On The Court Of Appeals Decision In Illinois V. Ferreiro, Center For Gender And Sexuality Law

Center for Gender & Sexuality Law

Illinois v. Ferriero is a lawsuit filed by the Attorneys General of the last three states that ratified the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) — Nevada, Illinois, and Virginia — asking the court to require that the ERA be officially published by the U.S. Archivist as the 28th Amendment to the Constitution. On March 5, 2021, the District Court dismissed the lawsuit on standing grounds, meaning that the three states had not shown that they suffered a legally recognized injury. The court reasoned that the Archivist’s actions have no legal effect and, as such, the states were not harmed by the …

Commentary: Nature-Based Insetting: A Harmful Distraction From Corporate Decarbonization, Nora Mardirossian, Jack Arnold

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

Carbon offsetting is used worldwide on a massive scale, purportedly to mitigate climate change by capturing atmospheric carbon or by increasing or protecting carbon storage. Yet, in recent years, offsetting has been increasingly criticized as a strategy that can harm Indigenous peoples and local communities, exacerbate land inequality, and, paradoxically, worsen the global climate crisis. “Carbon insetting” has emerged as an alternative approach to offsetting that localizes nature-based solutions projects and other greenhouse gas removal activities within company value chains and has been adopted by major global brands such as Nestlé, PepsiCo, and Burberry. This commentary takes a deep dive …

Ghg Accounting Methods In The Aluminum Industry, John Biberman, Perrine Toledano, Rohini Ram Mohan Mar 2023

Ghg Accounting Methods In The Aluminum Industry, John Biberman, Perrine Toledano, Rohini Ram Mohan

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

Primary aluminum production is one of the world’s most GHG-intensive industries, and also one where GHG accounting methods have become the most fully developed. GHG reporting for the primary aluminum sector has largely consolidated under the International Aluminium Institute’s (IAI) guidance, although Environment Canada (EC) guidance remains active and Chinese aluminum smelters will soon additionally be required to report their emissions under the China National Development and Reform Commission’s (China NDRC) guidelines, meant to support the development of the Chinese emissions trading system. The IAI method largely follows best GHG accounting practices, but aspects of it can be improved, and …

Connecticut Educator Insights On Building A More Effective, Diverse Educator Workforce, Madeleine Sims, Elizabeth Chu, Scheherazade Salimi, Delaney Lawson, Zoe Mitrofanis, Ivy Moore, Julia Skwarczyński

Center for Public Research and Leadership

Teachers are the strongest school-based determinant of student success. Yet at the start of the 2022-23 school year, across the state of Connecticut, over 1,200 certified staff member positions were vacant. The educator shortage was particularly acute in upper-level math and science, special education, and bilingual education.

Despite growing demand for educators in those subject areas, the number of pre-service educators pursuing those endorsements has generally remained constant or decreased between 2015-2021, suggesting that absent meaningful change, shortages will persist.

Educators, administrators, and policymakers hypothesize that the state’s current educator preparation and certification process contributes to the state’s twin challenges …

Acclimation And Hardening Of A Slow-Growing Woody Species Emblematic To Western North America From In Vitro Plantlets, Peggy Martinez, Marcelo Serpe, Rachael Barron, Sven Buerki Mar 2023

Acclimation And Hardening Of A Slow-Growing Woody Species Emblematic To Western North America From In Vitro Plantlets, Peggy Martinez, Marcelo Serpe, Rachael Barron, Sven Buerki

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Premise: Determining the tolerance of plant populations to climate change requires the development of biotechnological protocols producing genetically identical individuals used for genotype-by-environment experiments. Such protocols are missing for slow-growth, woody plants; to address this gap, this study uses Artemisia tridentata, a western North American keystone shrub, as model.

Methods and Results: The production of individual lines is a two-step process: in vitro propagation under aseptic conditions followed by ex vitro acclimation and hardening. Due to aseptic growth conditions, in vitro plantlets exhibit maladapted phenotypes, and this protocol focuses on presenting an approach promoting morphogenesis for slow-growth, woody species. …

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Ridesharing Intentions And Compliance With Covid-19 Health Guidelines: The Roles Of Social Trust, Fear Of Covid-19, And Trust-In-God, Md Nazmus Sakib, Fuad Hasan, Md Al-Emran, Reto Felix Mar 2023

A Cross-Cultural Analysis Of Ridesharing Intentions And Compliance With Covid-19 Health Guidelines: The Roles Of Social Trust, Fear Of Covid-19, And Trust-In-God, Md Nazmus Sakib, Fuad Hasan, Md Al-Emran, Reto Felix

Marketing Faculty Publications

Ridesharing services such as Uber and Lyft have been substantially affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on social capital theory, the current research investigates how social trust relates to three types of trust in compliance with COVID-19 guidelines and consumers' ridesharing intentions. Analyzing data from two economically and culturally distinct countries, the results suggest that social trust positively affects trust in platform companies' compliance with COVID-19 guidelines (TPC), but not (or to a lesser extent) trust in drivers' (TDC) and other riders (TRC) compliance with COVID-19 guidelines in both the United States and Bangladesh. Importantly, TPC, TDC, and TRC …

A Second Bite At The Apple: An Analysis Of In Re Jackson And Attempting To Use The Right Of Publicity As A Quasi Remedy To Copyright Preemption, Reyna Herrera

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Second Circuit recently decided the case of In Re Jackson, where famous rapper Curtis Jackson ("50 Cent") brought suit against William Roberts ("Rick Ross") asserting a state law right of publicity claim, involving Jackson's song "In Da Club." Currently, many circuits are divided as to whether the federal Copyright Act preempts such a claim. This note discusses the history of both the federal Copyright Act and the right of publicity, and explores past circuit court decisions regarding both laws, noting an exception many circuits chose to adopt: the commercial use exception. This note analyzes the commercial use exception …

The Social Well-Being Of Older Adults In Singapore, Micah Tan, Paulin T. Straughan, Grace Cheong, Wensi Lim

ROSA Research Briefs

The concept of social well-being has been of interest especially when studying older adult well-being given that problems of social isolation and loneliness are more prevalent and have greater consequences for older adults (Waite 2018). However, much is still to be understood about the social well-being of older adults with most research being conducted on social predictors of health, rather than on social well-being as a specific “component of health” (Waite 2018:100). As such, the current research brief provides a preliminary examination of social well-being among middle-aged and older adults in Singapore based on Keyes’ social well-being framework (Keyes 1998). …

Monopolistic Excessive Pricing As An "Esg Violation", Lior Frank Mar 2023

Monopolistic Excessive Pricing As An "Esg Violation", Lior Frank

Journal of International Business and Law

ESG (environmental, social, and governance) considerations are on the rise, and corporations that fail to adequately address and implement them in their business agenda are exposed to legal risks and liabilities. Such social considerations weaken the prevalent notion that the paramount purpose of the corporation is to maximize its shareholders’ wealth, even at the expense of the stakeholders’ (e.g., consumers) interests. In this ‘new era’ of ESG, corporations are compelled to take stakeholders’ interests into account, otherwise, they might face legal action. Accordingly, this article contends that monopolistic excessive pricing, which is currently deemed lawful under U.S. antitrust law, should …

The Coming Of Age Of Nucleic Acid Vaccines During Covid-19, Halie M. Rando, Ronan Lordan, Likhitha Kolla, Elizabeth Sell, Alexandra J. Lee, Nils Wellhausen, Amruta Naik, Jeremy P. Kamil, Anthony Gitter, Casey S. Greene

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

In the 21st century, several emergent viruses have posed a global threat. Each pathogen has emphasized the value of rapid and scalable vaccine development programs. The ongoing severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has made the importance of such efforts especially clear. New biotechnological advances in vaccinology allow for recent advances that provide only the nucleic acid building blocks of an antigen, eliminating many safety concerns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these DNA and RNA vaccines have facilitated the development and deployment of vaccines at an unprecedented pace. This success was attributable at least in part to broader shifts …

Thinking Global, Acting Local, Ali Gohar Qazi Mar 2023

Thinking Global, Acting Local, Ali Gohar Qazi

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

Ongoing or continuous professional development is essential for teachers to develop and maintain the knowledge base required to produce more powerful learning outcomes among their students. Research has shown that professional development is more effective and meaningful to teachers when it is content focused, involves active learning and collective participation, and when it is sustained in duration, instead of being top-down, episodic, or delivered as ‘one-shot’ training workshops.
