Transformative Experiences Of Beginner L2 Learners In The Italian Classroom For Social Justice, Giulia Negretto, Borbala Gaspar Mar 2023

Transformative Experiences Of Beginner L2 Learners In The Italian Classroom For Social Justice, Giulia Negretto, Borbala Gaspar

Dimensions

Focusing on two beginner Italian courses, this study demonstrates participants’ perceptions of and engagement with social justice topics and materials in a semesterlong project. A quantitative and qualitative analysis of surveys, triangulated with interviews and artifacts, such as comments by students during lessons and in their video responses, provide us with a better understanding of students’ previous expectations, perceptions and experiences with learning Italian; their background knowledge on social justice; and their reactions to the activities implemented throughout the course. Our findings indicate that learners value classroom activities and learning tools that allow them to share, collaborate, and reflect together. …

A Review Of Language Practice Exercises Within Commercially-Available Ebooks And Electronic Companion Practice, Carolyn Gascoigne Mar 2023

A Review Of Language Practice Exercises Within Commercially-Available Ebooks And Electronic Companion Practice, Carolyn Gascoigne

Dimensions

Following a brief historical review of the second language teaching profession’s relationship with first- and second-year textbooks, this article examines the treatment of language practice activities as found in beginning post-secondary French eBooks, as well as their accompanying electronic workbooks and online learning platform practice. Using Aski’s 2003 typology, five post-secondary eBooks and accompanying electronic practice are reviewed in order to examine their use of mechanical drills, meaningful drills, communicative drills, and communicative practice. Two structures were targeted for review across all formats. Electronic workbook and learning platform practice was found to be both more mechanical in nature and more …

Multi-Level World Language Classes: Teacher Perspectives And Practical Solutions, Christina Huhn, Patricia Davis-Wiley

Dimensions

Multi-level classes, classrooms that incorporate multiple levels of learners simultaneously, have existed for decades, yet have received little scholarly attention with respect to world language programs. This article presents a review of relevant literature on the topic and reports an analysis of the data from a national survey of U.S. K-16 world language teachers who currently teach or have taught multiple levels or multiple languages in the same class period (n=124). The findings of this exploratory study confirm the longstanding existence of multi-level classes in the U.S. educational landscape and offer suggestions to support teachers confronted with this challenge and …

I Am Not My Brother’S Keeper: A Brief History Of Georgia’S Apportionment Statute And The Future Of Tort Reform, Jordan S. Lipp Mar 2023

I Am Not My Brother’S Keeper: A Brief History Of Georgia’S Apportionment Statute And The Future Of Tort Reform, Jordan S. Lipp

Mercer Law Review

Imagine approaching a stop sign in Hamilton, Georgia and illegally rolling through it. After you make your rolling stop and pull out into the road, a driver T-bones your car, and your gas tank erupts into flames. Can you recover anything for your injuries, and if so, from whom?

The answer could turn on the jurisdiction in which you live and, in Georgia, the number of people you name as parties to the lawsuit. Can you sue the car manufacturer, even though the driver probably sparked the fire? Can you recover damages, even though you could have avoided the accident …

Forgotten Parties: Shifting The Focus Of Donor Conception To Donor-Conceived Persons Through Reasonable Regulation, Tiffany D. Gardner Mar 2023

Forgotten Parties: Shifting The Focus Of Donor Conception To Donor-Conceived Persons Through Reasonable Regulation, Tiffany D. Gardner

Mercer Law Review

In an age in which information is at our fingertips with a few keystrokes, members of the fertility industry are increasingly confronting the reality that anonymous sperm and egg donation is no longer realistic—and has not been for some time. With the advent of at-home commercial DNA testing, multiple generations are not only learning they were conceived through the use of reproductive material provided by third parties (“donors”) but also identifying those formerly anonymous donors. These revelations, and increasing advocacy by the people born of such donations (i.e., donor-conceived people) are changing the landscape of third-party reproduction around the world. …

Georgians “Waive” Goodbye To The Prospect Of Full Compensation In Car Wrecks Caused By Municipalities: Automatic Governmental Immunity Waiver’S Interplay With Liability Insurance, W. Jackson Latty Mar 2023

Georgians “Waive” Goodbye To The Prospect Of Full Compensation In Car Wrecks Caused By Municipalities: Automatic Governmental Immunity Waiver’S Interplay With Liability Insurance, W. Jackson Latty

Mercer Law Review

Arguably two of the most axiomatic interests the Georgia legislature must consider when enacting laws are the interests of local governments to carry out public works and individual citizens’ abilities to seek full and adequate relief when they have been injured by the wrong of another. For example, although police officers generally enjoy immunity for acts performed in their official capacity, there is also a compelling government interest in allowing individuals to recover for a police officer’s negligent or reckless conduct, recoveries which often repay local hospitals or government insurance systems for treatment otherwise covered by taxpayer dollars. These two …

“Hey, Google, What Are The Elements Of Homicide By Vehicle In The First Degree?”: The Supreme Court Of Georgia Reinforces The Prohibition On Extrajudicial Information Considered By A Jury In Criminal Trials, Savannah Hall Mar 2023

“Hey, Google, What Are The Elements Of Homicide By Vehicle In The First Degree?”: The Supreme Court Of Georgia Reinforces The Prohibition On Extrajudicial Information Considered By A Jury In Criminal Trials, Savannah Hall

Mercer Law Review

In a criminal trial, the presentation of evidence and the instruction of law to the jury are of crucial importance to ensure that a person is only convicted based upon sound understandings of the factual and legal framework under which they were charged. The complexities surrounding the rules of evidence are in place so that jurors are only allowed to consider the facts and testimony permissible under the rules of evidence, meaning it is of utmost importance for the jury to consider solely those things which a judge deems admissible, relevant, and helpful to understanding the case. However, given the …

Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud: Unenumerated Rights After Justice Thomas’S Dobbs Concurrence, Zachary Mullinax Mar 2023

Saying The Quiet Part Out Loud: Unenumerated Rights After Justice Thomas’S Dobbs Concurrence, Zachary Mullinax

Mercer Law Review

On May 2, 2022, an anonymous leaker released Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The opinion, dated February 10, overruled the Supreme Court of the United States’s landmark abortion rulings in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey to hold that the U.S. Constitution did not protect a right to obtain an abortion. Following vociferous criticism, the Court decided the case on June 24, 2022, issuing an opinion functionally identical to the leaked draft. Now, after decades of contrary precedent, the Fourteenth Amendment’s Due Process Clause (Due Process Clause) is interpreted …

Loss Of Peroxiredoxin Iv Protects Mice From Azoxymethane/Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Colorectal Cancer Development, Pratik Thapa, Hong Jiang, Na Ding, Yanning Hao, Aziza Alshahrani, Eun Young Lee, Junichi Fujii, Qiou Wei

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

Peroxiredoxin IV (Prx4), a typical two-cysteine-containing member of the peroxidase family, functions as an antioxidant to maintain cellular redox homeostasis through the reduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via cycles of oxidation–reduction reactions. Under oxidative stress, all Prxs including Prx4 are inactivated as their catalytic cysteines undergo hyperoxidation, and hyperoxidized two-cysteine Prxs can be exclusively repaired and revitalized through the reduction cycle catalyzed by sulfiredoxin (Srx). Previously, we showed that Prx4 is a preferred substrate of Srx, and knockout of Srx in mice leads to resistance to azoxymethane/dextran sulfate sodium (AOM/DSS)-induced colon carcinogenesis. To further understand the significance of the …

Not Your “Typical” Research: Inclusion Ethics In Neurodiversity Scholarship, Liana Bernard, Stefanie Fox, Kay Kulason, Alex Phanphackdy, Xander Kahle, Larry R. Martinez, Ludmila Praslova, Nicholas A. Smith

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research focusing on neurodiversityFootnote1 is critical for including all marginalized populations in the organizational diversity literature and for promoting theoretical innovation. It is imperative that such research models the ethics of inclusion (Gowen et al., Reference Gowen, Taylor, Bleazard, Greenstein, Baimbridge and Poole2019; Nicolaidis et al., Reference Nicolaidis, Raymaker, Kapp, Baggs, Ashkenazy, McDonald, Weiner, Maslak, Hunter and Joyce2019). Despite positive intent, majority group researchers have historically produced biased scholarship on novel marginalized populations (Colella et al., Reference Colella, Hebl and King2017). As all research includes some subjective bias, neurotypical researchers are likely to publish information that …

Gender Violence Or Tradition?: Media Coverage Of Child/Forced Marriage In Us Newspapers, Manjusha Gupte, Sundari Anitha Mar 2023

Gender Violence Or Tradition?: Media Coverage Of Child/Forced Marriage In Us Newspapers, Manjusha Gupte, Sundari Anitha

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The news media play an important role in influencing public perceptions and raising awareness of an issue. This research analyzes media framing of child/forced marriage through an examination of six US national newspapers over a ten-year period. It probes how narratives are constructed based on issue perception, blame attribution, and protagonist perceptions. It finds that print media has afforded increasing coverage to minimum marriage age legislation in the US. Mediated by advocacy organizations and survivors, the discourse surrounding child marriage has used a thematic frame as a legal issue with the onus on the state to amend laws facilitating child …

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick Mar 2023

Conflict Of Laws? Tensions Between Antitrust And Labor Law, Matthew Dimick

University of Chicago Law Review

Not long ago, economists denied the existence of monopsony in labor markets. Today, scholars are talking about using antitrust law to counter employer wagesetting power. While concerns about inequality, stagnant wages, and excessive firm power are certainly to be welcomed, this sudden about-face in theory, evidence, and policy runs the risk of overlooking some important concerns. The purpose of this Essay is to address these concerns and, more critically, to discuss some tensions between antitrust and labor law, a more traditional method for regulating labor markets. Part I addresses a question raised in the very recent literature, about why antitrust …

Losing Leverage: Employee Replaceability And Labor Market Power, Cynthia Estlund Mar 2023

Losing Leverage: Employee Replaceability And Labor Market Power, Cynthia Estlund

University of Chicago Law Review

Workers’ labor market power matters enormously to their lives at work and beyond. And most workers have too little of it. This Essay highlights one underappreciated set of factors in the decline of workers’ labor market power and explores policy levers that might help to rebalance the bargaining field. This Essay begins with the fairly self-evident observation that workers’ labor market power is a product in part of the ease with which employers can replace employees. That points to the importance of several trends in the organization and technology of work—including both fissuring and automation—that make it easier for private …

Worker Welfare And Antitrust, Herbert Hovenkamp Mar 2023

Worker Welfare And Antitrust, Herbert Hovenkamp

University of Chicago Law Review

The field of antitrust and labor has gone through a profound change in orientation. For the great bulk of its history, labor was viewed by antitrust enforcers as a competitive threat. The debate over antitrust and labor was framed around whether there should be a labor “immunity” from the antitrust laws. In just the last decade, however, the orientation has flipped. Most new writing views labor as a target of anticompetitive restraints imposed by employers. Antitrust is increasingly concerned with protecting labor rather than challenging its conduct.

Antitrust interest in labor markets is properly focused on two things. The smaller …

Coercive Rideshare Practices: At The Intersection Of Antitrust And Consumer Protection Law In The Gig Economy, Christopher L. Peterson, Marshall Steinbaum Mar 2023

Coercive Rideshare Practices: At The Intersection Of Antitrust And Consumer Protection Law In The Gig Economy, Christopher L. Peterson, Marshall Steinbaum

University of Chicago Law Review

This Essay considers antitrust and consumer protection liability for coercive practices vis-à-vis drivers that are prevalent in the rideshare industry. Resale price maintenance, nonlinear pay practices, withholding data, and conditioning data access on maintaining a minimum acceptance rate all curtail platform competition, sustaining a high-price, tacitly collusive equilibrium among the few incumbents. Moreover, concealing relevant trip data from drivers is both deceptive and unfair when the platforms are in full possession of the relevant facts. In the absence of these coercive practices, customers too would be better off due to platform competition, which would lower average prices by sharpening competition …

Quasi Tripartism: Limits Of Co-Regulation And Sectoral Bargaining In The United States, César F. Rosado Marzán Mar 2023

Quasi Tripartism: Limits Of Co-Regulation And Sectoral Bargaining In The United States, César F. Rosado Marzán

University of Chicago Law Review

Disproportionate employer power is at least partly responsible for the sharp increase in economic inequality in the United States, which threatens the fabric of the Republic. Workplace law reform could provide workers with an institutional source of power that countervails employer power and compresses inequality. Ideas for workplace law reform include modest ones, such as instituting “co-enforcement,” and more ambitious ones, such as “sectoral bargaining.” According to their adherents, both require tripartite arrangements where capital, labor, and government provide inputs on how to regulate work.

But can the United States, with its liberal market economy typically devoid of meaningful tripartism, …

Effects Of Library Workshop Attendance And Library Website Visit Frequency On Health Professions Students’ Libguides Awareness, John Carey, Ajatshatru Pathak, Sarah C. Johnson

Publications and Research

This research article examines data from an in-person 2017 survey on LibGuides usage, perceptions, and awareness of health professions students seeking bachelor and graduate level degrees. Almost 45% (n=20, N=45) of participants who visited the library’s website at least once per week indicated awareness of library-created LibGuides. Nearly 90% (n=8, N=9) of health professions students who had not visited the library’s website were unaware of the guides. The statistical analysis shows significant associations between various variables (academic level, library workshop attendance, research guide type usage, research guide page usage) and library guide awareness. The data did not reveal any significant …
