When Hay Was King: Energy History And Economic Nationalism In The Nineteenth-Century United States, Ariel Ron
When Hay Was King: Energy History And Economic Nationalism In The Nineteenth-Century United States, Ariel Ron
History Faculty Publications
Hay was a linchpin of the early industrial energy regime. It was the primary fodder for working horses, who became more rather than less important over the 1800s. Though largely ignored by historians, hay was of comparable value to cotton and wheat in the nineteenth-century United States. The crop’s historiographical invisibility is partly due to its relatively informal and decidedly subglobal production and exchange patterns. Whereas cotton and wheat exports passed through customhouses and institutionalized exchanges that carefully recorded trade volumes, hay was almost never exported and often underwent no market transaction at all, instead being used as an intermediate …

Rural Gentrification And The Spillover Effect: Integrated Transportation, Housing, And Land Use Challenges And Strategies In Gateway Communities, Danya Rumore, Philip Stoker
Rural Gentrification And The Spillover Effect: Integrated Transportation, Housing, And Land Use Challenges And Strategies In Gateway Communities, Danya Rumore, Philip Stoker
TREC Final Reports
Small towns and cities near national parks, public lands, and other natural amenities throughout the West are experiencing rapid growth and increased visitation. These “gateway communities” comprise a significant portion of the rural West, constituting about 31% of all communities and more than 60% of those under 25,000 people. Our prior NITC-funded research shows that growth and increased tourism create a range of “big city challenges” for gateway communities, particularly a significant increase in housing prices, which pushes the local workforce to outlying areas and other rural communities. As a result, despite being small towns, many developed gateway communities have …

Assessing Hardware Security Threats Posed By Hardware Trojans In Power Electronics, Quinn Kinzie
Assessing Hardware Security Threats Posed By Hardware Trojans In Power Electronics, Quinn Kinzie
All Theses
This study investigates the threat of hardware Trojans (HTs) in power electronics applications, a rising concern due to the growing demand for cost-effective embedded solutions in power systems. With the supply chain for electronic hardware devices expanding globally, particularly to low-cost foundries in foreign locations, there is an increasing risk of HT attacks. While there has been extensive research on HTs in computer applications, little consideration has been given to their threat in power electronics. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of a power electronics HT by implementing a novel HT design into a gate drive circuit. Additionally, the research proposes …

White-blooded Antarctic icefishes, a family within the adaptive radiation of Antarctic notothenioid fishes, are an example of extreme biological specialization to both the chronic cold of the Southern Ocean and life without hemoglobin. As a result, icefishes display derived physiology that limits them to the cold and highly oxygenated Antarctic waters. Against these constraints, remarkably one species, the pike icefish Champsocephalus esox, successfully colonized temperate South American waters. To study the genetic mechanisms underlying secondarily temperate adaptation in icefishes, we generated chromosome-level genome assemblies of both C. esox and its Antarctic sister species, Champsocephalus gunnari. The C. esox genome is …

Educator Perceptions Of Teacher Leadership And Its Impact On School Culture, Colter T. Rantz
Educator Perceptions Of Teacher Leadership And Its Impact On School Culture, Colter T. Rantz
Dissertations
Teacher leadership has been viewed as a way for educators to address their unmet professional needs (Bond, 2021). Teacher leaders ultimately have the means to create a positive school culture overall (Kiral, 2020). This mixed-methods study included a substantial look at the perceptions of educators, from one school district in Southwest Missouri, in regard to teacher leadership and its effect on school culture. The study was also designed to analyze factors that contributed to developing teacher leaders and to positively benefit the school’s atmosphere. Focus group interviews were conducted to gain insight regarding the perceptions of instructional coaches and administrators …
An Historic Analysis Of The Operation Of A Truancy Court Conducted In An Urban Middle School, Lisa Gray
An Historic Analysis Of The Operation Of A Truancy Court Conducted In An Urban Middle School, Lisa Gray
Dissertations
Truancy is a concern that most school districts around the country are familiar with. This study was to examine the development of a truancy court established in an effort to conquer this problem. There were several school districts, from inner city to rural, that believed truancy courts helped to reduce attendance issues. Data were collected and assessed from the observations of the existing truancy courts. It was determined from the data that truancy courts were only productive if the judge had the support from the parents. Some were repeat offenders, whereas some just needed a little guidance to get back …

PRISM (Full PDF Issues)
This issue of PRISM—titled “Forward Defense”—examines the security transformations taking place in these diverse but aligned countries. As distinct as these nine countries are they are each reinforcing, or in some cases rebuilding, their armed forces and reviving the Total Defense or Comprehensive Defense concepts they embraced during the Cold War. Total or Comprehensive Defense is a strategic approach that recognizes the multidimensional threat posed by autocratic countries and the existential threat to the liberal, rules-based world order. It understands that effective deterrence depends on both resistance and resilience and codes those into the respective security and defense strategies.

Autotetraploidization Alters Morphology, Photosynthesis, Cytological Characteristics And Fruit Quality In Sour Jujube (Ziziphus Acidojujuba Cheng Et Liu), Lihu Wang, Lixin Wang, Tingting Ye, Jin Zhao, Lili Wang, Hairong Wei, Ping Liu, Mengjun Liu
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
Artificially induced polyploidization is one of the most effective techniques for improving the biological properties and creating new cultivars of fruit trees. Up to now, systematic research on the autotetraploid of sour jujube (Ziziphus acidojujuba Cheng et Liu) has not been reported. ‘Zhuguang’ is the first released autotetraploid sour jujube induced with colchicine. The objective of this study was to compare the differences in the morphological, cytological characteristics, and fruit quality between diploid and autotetraploid. Compared with the original diploid, ‘Zhuguang’ showed dwarf phenotypes and decreased tree vigor. The sizes of the flowers, pollen, stomata, and leaves of ‘Zhuguang’ were …

In this article, I analyze Marxist activists’ narratives of becoming Marxist and their practices in activist spaces. Drawing on Jeffrey Juris and Alex Khansna-bish’s notion of “militant ethnography” and on Jodi Dean’s recuperation of the political party form of organizing, I ethnographically describe activists’ motivations to become Marxist and examine two events—a pro-Bernie political meeting and an anti-Trump rally—in which activists intervened with the Marxist idea of “unit-ing working-class struggles” in democratic spaces. I argue that the socialist party form of organization addresses two related dilemmas that anti-capitalist activists face in the context of systemic economic and political crises in …

Stellar bars are key drivers of secular evolution in galaxies and can be effectively studied using rest-frame near-infrared (NIR) images, which trace the underlying stellar mass and are less impacted by dust and star formation than rest-frame UV or optical images. We leverage the power of JWST CEERS NIRCam images to present the first quantitative identification and characterization of stellar bars at z > 1 based on rest-frame NIR F444W images of high resolution (∼1.3 kpc at z ∼ 1-3). We identify stellar bars in these images using quantitative criteria based on ellipse fits. For this pilot study, we present six …

Periodic And Antiperiodic Boundary Value Problems For The Sturm-Liouville Equation With The Discontinuous Coefficient, Suleyman Demirel University, K. D. Çoşkun, A. A. Nabiev, S. Saltan
Baku Mathematical Journal
The present paper studies the boundary-value problem in a finite segment generating with the discontinuous Sturm-Liouville equation and periodic(antiperiodic) boundary conditions. We prove completeness of the system of eigenfunctions and generalized eigenfunctions in the space L2(0, π; ρ), obtain the asymptotic formulas for the solution and prove the asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues of the periodic and antiperiodic boundary value problems

Elastic-Plastic Problem For A Perforated Plate Under Transversal Shear, Azerbaijan State Oil And Industry University, A. K. Mekhdiev, R. K. Mekhtiev
Baku Mathematical Journal
The problem of solving the problem of the transverse shear of a plate along the edges of the holes and weakened by a two-periodic system of rectilinear through cracks with plastic end zones, collinear to the abscissa and ordinate axes of unequal length, is considered. General representations of solutions are constructed that describe a class of problems with a doubly periodic distribution of moments outside circular holes and straight-line cracks with end zones of plastic deformations. Satisfying the boundary conditions, the solution of the problem of the plate shear theory is reduced to two infinite systems of algebraic equations and …

Two-Weighted Inequalities Of Maximal Commutators In The Modified Morrey Spaces, Associated With The Laplace-Bessel Differential Operator, Azerbaijan State Oil And Industry University, R. G. Azizova, Z. V. Safarov
Baku Mathematical Journal
We consider the generalized shift operator, associated with the LaplaceBessel differential operator ∆B =∑ni=1∂2∂x2i+∑ki=1γixi∂∂xi. The maximal commutators Mb,γ, associated with the generalized shift operator are investigated. At first, we prove that the maximal commutators is bounded from the modified Morrey space Lep,λ,φ1,γ(Rnk,+) to Lep,λ,φ1,γ(R n k,+) for all 1 < p < ∞, b ∈ BMOγ(Rnk,+), (φ1, φ2) ∈ Aep,γ(Rnk,+).

Boundedness Of The Discrete Hilbert Transform In Discrete Hölder Spaces, Baku State University, R. A. Aliev, L. G. Samadova
Baku Mathematical Journal
The Hilbert transform plays an important role in the theory and practice of signal processing operations in continuous system theory. The Hilbert transform was the motivation for the development of modern harmonic analysis. Its discrete version is also widely used in many areas of science and technology and plays an important role in digital signal processing. The essential motivation behind thinking about discrete transforms is that experimental data are most frequently not taken in a continuous manner but sampled at discrete time values. Since much of the data collected in both the physical sciences and engineering are discrete, the discrete …

Grand Hardy class H+p), p > 1, is defined and some properties of functions belonging to this class are studied in this work. Namely, the analogs of the Riesz and Smirnov theorems as well as the Cauchy’s formula for representation of function are proved. Necessary and sufficient condition for the validity of Riesz theorem in grand Hardy spaces H+p), p > 1, is found. Subspace GH+p)of the grand Hardy space H+p)generated by this condition is defined.
