A Satellite-Based Monitoring System For Quantifying Surface Water And Mesic Vegetation Dynamics In A Semi-Arid Region, N. E. Kolarik, A. Roopsind, A. Pickens, J. S. Brandt

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Semi-arid and arid systems cover one third of the earth’s land surface, and are becoming increasingly drier, but existing datasets do not capture all of the types of water resources that sustain these systems. In semi-arid environments, small surface water bodies and areas of mesic vegetation (wetlands, wet meadows, riparian zones) function as critical water resources. However, the most commonly-used maps of water resources are derived from the Landsat time series or single date aerial photographs, and are too coarse either spatially or temporally to effectively monitor water resource dynamics. In this study, we produced a Sentinel Fusion (SF) water …

Accessible Online Learning: A Preliminary Investigation Of Educational Technologists’ And Faculty Members’ Knowledge And Skills, Patrick R. Lowenthal, Amy Lomellini

Educational Technology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Colleges and Universities have a more diverse student body than ever before—this includes a growing number of students with disabilities. Many of these students are attracted to the flexibility and anonymity of learning online. However, research suggests that students with disabilities often face barriers learning online. Given this, we set out to investigate how faculty and educational technologists are prepared to design accessible online courses and instructional materials. We surveyed 95 educational technologists, directors, and disability access personnel in this exploratory study. In the following paper, we report the results of our inquiry into these professionals’ perspectives on faculty and …

Rates Of Injury According To A Single Or Comorbid Mental Illness Identified In A Large Employee Database, Mckay A. Ashton, Ray M. Merrill Mar 2023

Rates Of Injury According To A Single Or Comorbid Mental Illness Identified In A Large Employee Database, Mckay A. Ashton, Ray M. Merrill

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023

In 2022, almost 20% of adults in the U.S. experienced a mental illness. Some of these illnesses include anxiety, depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, autism, and schizophrenia.

It has been found that those with a mental illness are 60% more likely to sustain an acute injury compared to those without a mental illness.

It is well known that mental illnesses are associated with injuries and that the causal direction is bidirectional.

It is not uncommon for individuals to be diagnosed with two or more (comorbid) mental illnesses at the same time, and data shows that comorbid mental illness ranges from …

Sleep Disorders Related To Index And Comorbid Mental Health Conditions And Medication, Mckay A. Ashton, Ray M. Merrill

Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2023

Sleep is a basic need that is essential to both physical and mental health

Sleep disorders involve sleep disturbances, which can lead to many physical and cognitive health consequences

There are many mental health conditions associated with sleep disorders including stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and bipolar disorder. These often have a bidirectional association with sleep disorders.

The relationship between some sleep disorders and mental health conditions may be impacted by whether the index mental health condition is accompanied by comorbid mental illness.

Among those with a single mental health condition, comorbid mental illness has been found to range between 45% …

Faculty Research 2023

Healthcare datasets obtained from Electronic Health Records have proven to be extremely useful for assessing associations between patients’ predictors and outcomes of interest. However, these datasets often suffer from missing values in a high proportion of cases, whose removal may introduce severe bias. Several multiple imputation algorithms have been proposed to attempt to recover the missing information under an assumed missingness mechanism. Each algorithm presents strengths and weaknesses, and there is currently no consensus on which multiple imputation algorithm works best in a given scenario. Furthermore, the selection of each algorithm’s pa- rameters and data-related modeling choices are also both …

Faculty Research 2023

BACKGROUND: New precision medicine therapies are urgently required for glioblastoma (GBM). However, to date, efforts to subtype patients based on molecular profiles have failed to direct treatment strategies. We hypothesised that interrogation of the GBM tumour microenvironment (TME) and identification of novel TME-specific subtypes could inform new precision immunotherapy treatment strategies.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: A refined and validated microenvironment cell population (MCP) counter method was applied to >800 GBM patient tumours (GBM-MCP-counter). Specifically, partition around medoids (PAM) clustering of GBM-MCP-counter scores in the GLIOTRAIN discovery cohort identified three novel patient clusters, uniquely characterised by TME composition, functional orientation markers and …

Faculty Research 2023

The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) is developing a suite of coordinated standards for genomics for healthcare. The Phenopacket is a new GA4GH standard for sharing disease and phenotype information that characterizes an individual person, linking that individual to detailed phenotypic descriptions, genetic information, diagnoses, and treatments. A detailed example is presented that illustrates how to use the schema to represent the clinical course of a patient with retinoblastoma, including demographic information, the clinical diagnosis, phenotypic features and clinical measurements, an examination of the extirpated tumor, therapies, and the results of genomic analysis. The Phenopacket Schema, together with …

The Role Classifiers Play In Selecting The Referent Of A Word, Weiyi Ma, Peng Zhou, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff Mar 2023

The Role Classifiers Play In Selecting The Referent Of A Word, Weiyi Ma, Peng Zhou, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff

General Human Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

An important cue to the meaning of a new noun is its accompanying classifier. For example, in English, X in “a sheet of X” should refer to a broad, flat object. A classifier is required in Chinese to quantify nouns. Using children’s overt responses in an object/picture selection task, past research found reliable semantic knowledge of classifiers in Mandarin-reared children at around age three. However, it is unclear how children’s semantic knowledge differs across different types of classifiers and how this difference develops with age. Here we use an arguably more sensitive measure of children’s language knowledge (the intermodal preferential-looking …

The Limitations Of Privacy Rights, Daniel J. Solove Mar 2023

The Limitations Of Privacy Rights, Daniel J. Solove

Notre Dame Law Review

Individual privacy rights are often at the heart of information privacy and data protection laws. The most comprehensive set of rights, from the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), includes the right to access, right to rectification (correction), right to erasure (deletion), right to restriction, right to data portability, right to object, and right to not be subject to automated decisions. Privacy laws around the world include many of these rights in various forms.

In this Article, I contend that although rights are an important component of privacy regulation, rights are often asked to do far more work than …

Mglu5 Inhibition In The Basolateral Amygdala Prevents Estrous Cycle-Dependent Changes In Cue-Induced Cocaine Seeking, Claire M. Corbett, Emily N. D. Miller, Jessica A. Loweth

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

Drug associated cues are a common relapse trigger for individuals recovering from cocaine use disorder. Sex and ovarian hormones influence patterns of cocaine use and relapse vulnerability, with studies indicating that females show increased cue-induced craving and relapse vulnerability compared to males. In a rodent model of cocaine craving and relapse vulnerability, cue-induced cocaine seeking behavior following weeks of withdrawal from extended-access cocaine self-administration is higher in females in the estrus stage of the reproductive (estrous) cycle (Estrus Females) compared to both Males and females in all other stages (Non-Estrus Females). However, the neuronal substrates and cellular mechanisms underlying these …
