Socioeconomic Factors In The Diagnosis And Treatment Of Malignant Melanoma In Hispanic Vs. Non-Hispanic Patients: A National Cancer Database (Ncdb) Study, Julia Griffin, Sarah J. Aurit, Timothy Malouff, Peter Silberstein

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Background: The incidence of melanoma is rapidly increasing in the United States. There is a paucity of research of how melanoma affects the Hispanic population, the quickest growing population.

Objective: To identify and understand how socioeconomic factors affect a Hispanic patients health outcome and treatment of malignant melanoma with comparisons to white, non-Hispanic (WNH) patients.

Methods: A retrospective study utilizing the National Cancer Database (NCDB) was completed investigating Hispanic patients (n=2282) and WNH patients (n=190,469) with Stage I-IV malignant melanoma. Outcome and socioeconomic variables were identified and compared across groups. Data was analyzed with SPSS and SAS …

Estimating The Prevalence Of Two Or More Diseases Using Outcomes From Multiplex Group Testing, Md S. Warasi, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan, Christopher R. Bilder Mar 2023

Estimating The Prevalence Of Two Or More Diseases Using Outcomes From Multiplex Group Testing, Md S. Warasi, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan, Christopher R. Bilder

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

When screening a population for infectious diseases, pooling individual specimens (e.g., blood, swabs, urine, etc.) can provide enormous cost savings when compared to testing specimens individually. In the biostatistics literature, testing pools of specimens is commonly known as group testing or pooled testing. Although estimating a population-level prevalence with group testing data has received a large amount of attention, most of this work has focused on applications involving a single disease, such as human immunodeficiency virus. Modern methods of screening now involve testing pools and individuals for multiple diseases simultaneously through the use of multiplex assays. Hou et al. (2017, …

Penguins Go Parallel: A Grammar Of Graphics Framework For Generalized Parallel Coordinate Plots, Susan Vanderplas, Yawei Ge, Antony Unwin, Heike Hofmann

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Parallel Coordinate Plots (PCP) are a valuable tool for exploratory data analysis of high-dimensional numerical data. The use of PCPs is limited when working with categorical variables or a mix of categorical and continuous variables. In this article, we propose Generalized Parallel Coordinate Plots (GPCP) to extend the ability of PCPs from just numeric variables to dealing seamlessly with a mix of categorical and numeric variables in a single plot. In this process we find that existing solutions for categorical values only, such as hammock plots or parsets become edge cases in the new framework. By focusing on individual observations …

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the associations of comorbid

posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), affective or somatic depression, and

suicide among first responders (FRs). Method: We used baseline data from

FRs (N = 232) who sought services at a nonprofit mental health agency specializing

in treating trauma exposed FRs. We conducted two PROCESS simple

mediation models with PTSD as the predictor, affective depression and somatic

depression as the mediators, and suicidality as the dependent variable.

Results: Affective depression significantly mediated the relationship between

PTSD and suicidality, whereas somatic depression did not. The direct effect …

Extension Publications

Global food shortages are caused mainly by drought, the primary driver of yield loss in agriculture worldwide. Drought stress negatively impacts the physiological and morphological characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.), limiting the plant productivity and hence the economy of global rice production. Physiological changes due to drought stress in rice include constrained cell division and elongation, stomatal closure, loss of turgor adjustment, reduced photosynthesis, and lower yields. Morphological changes include inhibition of seed germination, reduced tillers, early maturity, and reduced biomass. In addition, drought stress leads to a metabolic alteration by increasing the buildup of …

Growth, Yield, And Yield Stability Of Canola In The Northern Great Plains Of The United States, Unius Arinaitwe, Sharon Clay, Thandiwe Nleya

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Canola (Brassica napus L.) may diversify wheat-based cropping systems in the Northern Great Plains. However, agronomic adaptability and stability of high- yielding genotypes have not been widely evaluated over the diverse environmental conditions of South Dakota (SD). A 2-year field experiment was conducted in two contrasting environments (Brookings—eastern SD and Pierre—Central SD) to evaluate genotypes (10 in 2019 and 12 in 2020) for days to 50% flower, lodg- ing, pods plant−1 , seed yield, 1000-seed weight, and yield stability. Seed yield for all genotypes in Brookings averaged 1961 and 1740 kg ha−1 , in 2019 and 2020, respectively, whereas at …

Analysis And Installation Of A Demonstration Agroforestry Orchard For Californian Mediterranean Plant Communities, Brandon Hurd Mar 2023

Analysis And Installation Of A Demonstration Agroforestry Orchard For Californian Mediterranean Plant Communities, Brandon Hurd

Master of Science in Environmental Sciences and Management Projects

Climate-appropriate agroforestry can provide low-input food security and ecosystem services for local Californian Mediterranean climates, while conserving natural resources (e.g., water, nitrogen, etc.). This project showcases a variety of agroforestry methods for five common plant communities of California and other analogous Mediterranean climates at the CAFES Experimental Farm on the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Plant community species and their ethnobotanical uses were analyzed to mimic and incorporate aspects of native flora. Agricultural plants were also characterized to represent each of the five selected plant communities. GIS was used to assess the project site for soil, slope, and …

Ethereum Blockchain Based E-Voting System For Jordan Parliament Elections, Mohammad Malkawi, Muneer Bani Yaseen, Doaa Habeebalah Mar 2023

Ethereum Blockchain Based E-Voting System For Jordan Parliament Elections, Mohammad Malkawi, Muneer Bani Yaseen, Doaa Habeebalah

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents an Ethereum-based E-Voting System (EBVS) applied for the parliamentary election system in the country of Jordan. The proposed EBVS system implements a uniquely structured voting process, where a voter must first vote for a menu, which represents a party or a group of candidates, and then to cast a vote for one or more members within the menu. This study addresses performance issues, including time and one of Ethereum main parameters (the gas consumption). The EBVS system provides new algorithms and methods, which enable votes to be casted within a specific period for each voter in a …

A New Normal Regression With Medical Applications, Nicollas S. S Da Costa, Gauss M. Cordeiro Mar 2023

A New Normal Regression With Medical Applications, Nicollas S. S Da Costa, Gauss M. Cordeiro

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

We define the generalized odd log-logistic normal regression with a dispersion systematic component. We obtain a linear representation, some of its properties, and maximum likelihood estimates. Furthermore, we carry out several simulations for different schemes to evaluate the accuracy of the estimators. The robustness of the new regression model is proved by modeling COVID-19 data. The proposed model explains COVID-19 ICU survival times of the patients in a Brazilian hospital.

What's Originalism After Transunion?: Picking An Originalist Approach That Gets Standing Back On Track, Julian Gregorio

Notre Dame Law Review Reflection

This Note argues that not only is standing fascinating and contested, but it is so important that the Court should reconsider standing doctrine in appropriate future cases. While the TransUnion case came and went without much kerfuffle outside of legal circles, standing does not find itself sailing smoothly. As noted, perhaps the Court’s most reliable originalist just dissented from a case that largely restates the current law on standing. And Justice Kagan, perhaps the Court’s most influential liberal, wrote that after TransUnion, standing jurisprudence “needs a rewrite.” Given the current makeup of the Court, any reconsideration of standing doctrine …

The World Is Cognizable: An Argument Based On Hoermander's Theorem, Miroslav Svitek, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Is the world cognizable? Is it, in principle, possible to predict the future state of the world based on the measurements and observations performed in a local area -- e.g., in the Solar system? In this paper, we use general physicists' principles and a mathematical theorem about partial differential equations to show that such prediction is indeed, theoretically possible.

Use Of Machine Learning In Interactive Cybersecurity And Network Education, Neil Loftus, Husnu S. Narman Mar 2023

Use Of Machine Learning In Interactive Cybersecurity And Network Education, Neil Loftus, Husnu S. Narman

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Cybersecurity is a complex subject for students to pursue. Hands-on online learning through labs and simulations can help students become more familiar with the subject at security classes to pursue cybersecurity education. There are several online tools and simulation platforms for cybersecurity education. However, those platforms need more constructive feedback mechanisms, and customizable hands-on exercises for users, or they oversimplify or misrepresent the content. In this paper, we aim to develop a platform for cybersecurity education that can be used either with a user interface or command line and provide auto constructive feedback for command line practices. Moreover, the platform …
