Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimization Techniques For Energy And Socioeconomic Systems, Salman Sadiq Shuvo Mar 2023

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Optimization Techniques For Energy And Socioeconomic Systems, Salman Sadiq Shuvo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Optimization, which refers to making the best or most out of a system, is critical for an organization's strategic planning. Optimization theories and techniques aim to find the optimal solution that maximizes/minimizes the values of an objective function within a set of constraints. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is a popular Machine Learning technique for optimization and resource allocation tasks. Unlike the supervised ML that trains on labeled data, DRL techniques require a simulated environment to capture the stochasticity of real-world complex systems. This uncertainty in future transitions makes the planning authorities doubt real-world implementation success. Furthermore, the DRL methods have …

Effective Connectivity Of Functional Mri Via Deep Learning Methods, Kai-Cheng Chuang Mar 2023

Effective Connectivity Of Functional Mri Via Deep Learning Methods, Kai-Cheng Chuang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Effective connectivity, based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series signals, is the quantification of how strongly brain activity in a certain source brain region contributes to brain activity in a target brain region, independent of the contributions of other source regions. Current methods to solve this problem have several limitations. They are either unable to model nonlinear relationships between source and target signals, unable to efficiently quantify time lags in source-target relationships, unable to identify time-varying relationships, or fail to account for variability in the hemodynamic response function that converts neuron activity to a measurable signal. In this …

Trends In Male And Female Urethral Endoscopic Management And Urethroplasty Using The Trinetx Database, Adam M. Ostrovsky, Zachary J. Prebay, Paul H. Chung

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

Background: How quickly providers adapt to new practice guidelines is not well known. The objective of this study was to evaluate temporal trends in the performance of urethral endoscopic management and urethroplasty surrounding the release of the American Urological Association (AUA) Male Urethral Stricture Guidelines in 2017. We also evaluate in parallel trends in female urethral stricture disease, where AUA guidelines are not present. We hypothesized that the ratio of urethroplasty versus urethral endoscopic management in both males and females is increasing and that guidelines do not result in immediate changes in management trends. Methods: Endoscopic management and urethroplasty data …

Lynch Law In The Land Of Lincoln: African American Intellectuals And Early Twentieth Century Race Riots, John Patrick Pleming Mar 2023

Lynch Law In The Land Of Lincoln: African American Intellectuals And Early Twentieth Century Race Riots, John Patrick Pleming

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract: In the early twentieth century, more and more African Americans began to leave the American South in search of better jobs and more equal treatment in the North. These black migrants found a less rigid racial hierarchy and employment in industrial and domestic settings. However, racism in the North was alive and well. As African American communities began to exert their economic and political power, they were often targeted by white mobs who would rampage through black neighborhoods, killing and burning as they went. In response to race riots in Springfield (1908), East St. Louis (1917), and Chicago (1919), …

Operationalizing Process Mapping For Small-To-Medium Enterprise Erp Implementation, Matthew Simeroth Mar 2023

Operationalizing Process Mapping For Small-To-Medium Enterprise Erp Implementation, Matthew Simeroth

Theses and Dissertations

Business Process Reengineering (BPR) is a critical success factor for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation projects that typically involve mapping business processes in cross-functional flowcharts. Despite being the most common type of process map used by small-to-medium enterprises (SME) for BPR, traditional cross-functional flowcharts do not contain the data necessary to optimize and operationalize a process and are a contributing factor to the 70% failure rate experienced by SMEs when implementing a new ERP system. This thesis provides an alternate method of process mapping, known as Operational Process Mapping, that addresses the weaknesses of cross-functional flowcharts for the BPR stage …

Protect Earth’S Orbit: Avoid High Seas Mistakes, Imogen E. Napper, Alasdair J. Davies, Moriba Jah, Kimberley R. Miner, Richard C. Thompson, Melissa Quinn, Heather J. Koldewey

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The global space industry is growing rapidly—the number of satellites in orbit is expected to increase from 9000 today (1) to over 60,000 by 2030 (2). In addition, it is estimated that more than 100 trillion untracked pieces of old satellites are already in orbit (3). Although the industries and countries using Earth’s orbit are starting to consider sustainability, risks exist in responsibly managing such a vast area with no owner (4). Like the high seas, Earth’s orbit is seen as a global commons, where exploitation of what may appear to be a free resource is growing and the true …

Nutrient Loadings To Utah Lake From Bulk Atmospheric Deposition, Mitchell Matthew Brown Mar 2023

Nutrient Loadings To Utah Lake From Bulk Atmospheric Deposition, Mitchell Matthew Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Atmospheric deposition is a marginally understood source of nutrient loadings to waterbodies. Atmospheric deposition occurs via wet (rain, snow) and dry (gaseous and particulate transport) pathways. Bulk atmospheric deposition is defined as the total deposition from both wet and dry pathways. Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic freshwater lake located in central Utah, USA. Recent studies have shown atmospheric deposition to be a significant contributor to the nutrient budget of Utah Lake. This study presents the analysis using three different methods of six years' worth of wet atmospheric deposition samples from nine locations around the lake, though these samples do …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of evidence from nationwide samples on the disparity of initiating immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) after metastatic lung cancer diagnosis.

METHODS: We identified metastatic lung cancer patients diagnosed between 2015 and 2020 from a large, nationwide commercial claims database. We analyzed the time from metastatic lung cancer diagnosis to ICI therapy using Cox proportional hazard models. Independent variables included county-level measures (quintiles of percentage of racialized population, quintiles of percentage of population below poverty, urbanity, and density of medical oncologists) and patient characteristics (age, sex, Charlson comorbidity index, Medicare Advantage, and year of diagnosis). All tests …

Effect Of Tdcs Stimulation On Conner’S Cpt Performance Of Young Adult, Shakila Parvin Bristy

Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters

Conner’s CPT measures attention related performances in adult and children using EEG recordings. This study showed changes in cognitive performance induced by transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The objective of this study is to prove, if tDCS stimulation compared to sham can improve Conner’s CPT performance by increasing excitability of the visual cortex through anodal stimulation of the occipital lobe. After analyzing the result, we found lower alpha, beta and gamma mean values in sham session and a decrease in theta activity during actual tDCS stimulation session resulting in greater excitability in the visual cortex and improvement of attentional performance. …

Understanding Nanog’S Role In Cell Differentiation, Oluwatobiloba Aminu, Junguk Hur, Bony De Kumar

Graduate Research Achievement Day Posters

Background: Pluripotency and differentiation are crucial cellular states for normal development and disease control. They are regulated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Master transcription factors, such as Nanog, Sox2, and Oct4, play a critical role in pluripotency, but their function in differentiation is not entirely clear. This study aims to investigate Nanog's role in differentiation using mouse embryonic stem cells as a model.

Methods: An integrative analysis was carried out using gene expression and chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing data to determine the impact of Nanog binding on downstream gene expression. Target genes were identified as those whose expression was altered by …

Characterization Of Bubble Transport In Porous Media Using A Microfluidic Channel, Ryan Haggerty, Dong Zhang, Jongwan Eun, Yusong Li

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications

This study investigates the effect on varying flow rates and bubble sizes on gas–liquid flow through porous media in a horizontal microchannel. A simple bubble generation system was set up to generate bubbles with controllable sizes and frequencies, which directly flowed into microfluidic channels packed with different sizes of glass beads. Bubble flow was visualized using a high-speed camera and analyzed to obtain the change in liquid holdup. Pressure data were measured for estimation of hydraulic conductivity. The bubble displacement pattern in the porous media was viscous fingering based on capillary numbers and visual observation. Larger bubbles resulted in lower …
