Engagement In Water Governance Action Situations In The Lake Champlain Basin, Patrick Bitterman, Christopher Koliba Mar 2023

Engagement In Water Governance Action Situations In The Lake Champlain Basin, Patrick Bitterman, Christopher Koliba

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

Water quality governance encompasses multiple “wicked” interacting problems that manifest within social-ecological systems. Concerned governments, institutions, and actors concerned with addressing these issues must wrestle with complex systems that span time, space, and scale. This complexity of connected systems requires the participation of multiple actors across political boundaries, problem areas, and hydrologic domains. In Lake Champlain (US), frequent cyanobacteria blooms negatively affect property values, recreational activities, and public infrastructure, in addition to their impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. Through a survey of actors working on water quality in the Lake Champlain Basin, we analyze how actor participation in structured issue …

HPD Articles

Monkeypox (MPX) is an exanthematous disease first identified in the 1950s, associated with animals in Central and Western Africa, and has since been found sporadically worldwide. In May 2022, a returning family from Nigeria tested positive for MPX, which marked the onset of the current outbreak. It has now become a disease of concern in most parts of the world. The current standings are nearing 90,000 cases, with numbers increasing daily. The United States reported 29,711 cases so far. The characteristic exanthem of MPX is known to be present ubiquitously on the human habitus, with recent reports describing anogenital and …

Our Voices: Getting To Know Autism, Katherine Rasberry

Honors Theses

This study was done in effort to understand the thoughts and feelings of autistic adults relative to life transitions and resources available. We surveyed key stakeholders; specifically autistic students, but also family/caregivers of adults. Six surveys were created, each based upon different themes: camouflaging, life transitions, managing mental health, overstimulation, social communication, and family and caregiver perceptions. Our surveys were marketed on Western Michigan University’s campus and through social media and are still ongoing. Trends in the data, however, suggest that overall autistics have concerns about how their disabilities impact life in or shortly after college. Many respondents expressed they …

The Constitution Commandeth: Thou Shalt Not Protect The Same Subject Matter Under Design Patent And Trade Dress Laws, Kenneth B. Germain, Louis H. Sitler Mar 2023

The Constitution Commandeth: Thou Shalt Not Protect The Same Subject Matter Under Design Patent And Trade Dress Laws, Kenneth B. Germain, Louis H. Sitler

IP Theory

For many years and still currently, it has been assumed—and even expressly asserted—that it is perfectly permissible to “stack” various legal theories (concurrently or consecutively) to protect nonfunctional “designs” for products. This is despite infrequent but cogent arguments that the available theories, notably design patents and product design trade dress—both of which are based upon federal statutes—are not Constitutionally compatible due to at least the concept of Superfluity. The authors of this article carefully examine the origin, nature, and meaning of these two types of IP protections in the context of their two Constitutional bases—the Patent/Copyright Clause and the Commerce …

A Review Of The Cardiovascular Safety Of Prucalopride In Patients With Chronic Idiopathic Constipation, Jan Tack, Katayoun Derakhchan, André Gabriel, William Spalding, Brian Terreri, Ashraf Youssef, Bahij Kreidieh, Peter R. Kowey, Mena Boules Mar 2023

A Review Of The Cardiovascular Safety Of Prucalopride In Patients With Chronic Idiopathic Constipation, Jan Tack, Katayoun Derakhchan, André Gabriel, William Spalding, Brian Terreri, Ashraf Youssef, Bahij Kreidieh, Peter R. Kowey, Mena Boules

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

Prokinetic agents, specifically 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 (5-HT 4 ) receptor agonists, have been shown to provide relief in chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC). The first-generation 5-HT 4 agonists were initially withdrawn from use owing to associations with serious cardiovascular (CV) events. This review summarizes CV safety data for prucalopride, a high-affinity 5-HT 4 agonist approved in the United States in 2018 for adults with CIC. No significant effects of prucalopride on CV safety were observed in animal models or early-phase clinical studies, including a thorough QT study at therapeutic (2 mg) or supratherapeutic (10 mg) doses. Among 1,750 patients with CIC …

Restoration And Modification Of A Sputter Tool For The Deposition Of A Zno Guiding Layer Via Rf Sputtering, Matthew Watson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, a novel sputter tool was restored and modified to deposit a ZnO film for future applications as a guiding layer on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device. Some restorations and modifications included a water chiller being sized and added to the tool, leak checks to establish an ultra-high vacuum of 10-6 Torr, then finally heat lamps for temperature control were installed. Once modified, one of the preexisting magnetrons was utilized to deposit a ZnO via RF sputtering onto a quartz substrate. The layer was characterized via energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy which showed the existence of Zn on the …

Pentecost 2033: Approaching The Great Jubilee, Jay Gary Mar 2023

Pentecost 2033: Approaching The Great Jubilee, Jay Gary

College of Arts and Cultural Studies Faculty Research and Scholarship

The year 2033 will mark the 2,000th anniversary of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church. How should Spirit-empowered Christians approach this milestone? How have previous generations approached significant historical milestones, whether successfully or unsuccessfully? To what degree might the church's bimillennial open an opportunity to address spiritual challenges such as cultural discontent, political populism or millennial violence? What questions must we ask ourselves as we explore, prepare, and ultimately commemorate the Great Jubilee 2030-2033, and cross the threshold of hope into humanity's third millennium?

Examining Empathetic, High-Communication, And Supportive Hiring Processes To Forge A Shared Future, Annie Bélanger, Sheila García Mazari, Preethi Gorecki

Presentations

This presentation will explore perspectives on hiring practices from both sides of the table. The library's first residency search and subsequent faculty searches integrated leading recruitment and high-empathy hiring practices. The residency search committee chair, one of the successful residency candidates, and a tenure-track faculty hired using the new approach team up to dissect the hiring process from their perspectives. They will discuss the work behind critically examining the existing hiring process, designing a recruitment plan, and implementing a new structure in order to ensure empathy to applicants going through the process. They will then discuss the impact of high-empathy …

Following The "Iron Lady" And Finding A University: A Phenomenological Study Of Organizational Identity, Erin Pearson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Higher education culture is steeped in institutional identity and ties to history. But what happens when that history is challenged, and an institution must change its name? While a merger was not initially intended for Kearney State College, merging into the University of Nebraska system was the only way to reflect the change and growth that emulated the type of institution it had become. By interviewing sixteen participants that lived the experience of the merge, a concise and collective history of the events that led to the creation of the University of Nebraska at Kearney was obtained and studied. Through …

Identification Of Gap Junction Genes Involved In The Tail-Flip Escape Circuit Of Marbled Crayfish, Rajit S. Roy Mar 2023

Identification Of Gap Junction Genes Involved In The Tail-Flip Escape Circuit Of Marbled Crayfish, Rajit S. Roy

Theses and Dissertations

Escape responses are highly stereotyped behaviors that enable organisms to avoid threats in their environment. To ensure the rapid and robust execution of these behaviors, they are often mediated by dedicated neuronal circuits with fast feed-forward signal propagation. Rectifying electrical synapses, which allow electrical current to preferentially flow only in one direction, are a hallmark of such circuits, and facilitate rapid and stereotyped neuronal signaling for fast, reflexive behaviors. In vitro studies have suggested that it is the heterotypic distribution of the gap junction proteins (called innexins in invertebrates), i.e., possessing different innexins in pre- and postsynaptic neurons, that enables …
