Strategic Alignment: A Model For Linking Behaviors To Strategy To Drive Organizational Success, Jim Maddox Mar 2023

Strategic Alignment: A Model For Linking Behaviors To Strategy To Drive Organizational Success, Jim Maddox

Journal of the North American Management Society

A model linking behavior to strategy to help drive organizational success is described. To effectively implement strategy, all areas of the organization and all employees must be aligned and linked to the strategy. This model takes the linkage one step further and links strategy to specific employee behaviors. This creates line of sight and strategic alignment. This is an important first step in beginning to identify the critical behaviors necessary to achieve the organization’s strategies. Creating this line of sight communicates to each employee what their individual role is in helping to achieve the organization’s defined strategies. This understanding is …

The Efficacy Of Accommodating Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Employees In The Workplace Via Note Taking, Linda M. Balsamo Mar 2023

The Efficacy Of Accommodating Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Employees In The Workplace Via Note Taking, Linda M. Balsamo

Journal of the North American Management Society

Deaf and hard-of-hearing employees often find it difficult to learn about important information, which is disseminated informally in their employing organizations. The purpose of this study was to examine information, which is impromptu or short in duration, that is transcribed by note takers. It examined the quality of the note taking both in quantity and content. The participants included 65 individuals with varying levels of contact with deaf and hard-of-hearing co-workers. Results indicated that note takers attend to verbal messages more than to textual or visual messages. Note takers tend to prioritize messages and transcribe those with a higher perceived …

Bridging The Gap Between Theory And Practice: The Role Of Protocol Materials In Business Education For 2010 And Beyond, David O'Gorman Mar 2023

Bridging The Gap Between Theory And Practice: The Role Of Protocol Materials In Business Education For 2010 And Beyond, David O'Gorman

Journal of the North American Management Society

This paper proposes a way to significantly reduce the gap between theory and practice through the use of new technology and a thirty-year old concept called protocol materials. Protocol materials are video recordings of the real world that can be used in the classroom. Technology is evolving rapidly, and in a few years it will be possible to easily bring the real world of business into the classroom. This paper traces the origins of the protocol materials concept in the field of teacher education, and suggests the time is right for business education to adopt the Protocol Materials Process as …

Repatriating The Buffalo: Nagpra’S Applicability To Yellowstone Bison Management, Saylor Soinski Mar 2023

Repatriating The Buffalo: Nagpra’S Applicability To Yellowstone Bison Management, Saylor Soinski

Pace Environmental Law Review

The American bison—also known as the buffalo—holds great significance to many Native American people and cultures. Although bison populations have grown since their near destruction in the 19th century, the last remaining wild bison are under threat by the National Park Service’s Yellowstone management plan. Native representatives have had only a limited advisory role in creating the plan, and a number of Native individuals and advocacy groups have spoken out against it. This essay explores the possibility of applying the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act to living animals for the first time, categorizing the bison as “objects of …

The Fast Fashion Industry: Formulating The Future Of Environmental Change, Alexa Maratos Mar 2023

The Fast Fashion Industry: Formulating The Future Of Environmental Change, Alexa Maratos

Pace Environmental Law Review

This Note focuses on the harmful environmental impacts the fast fashion industry has created, and continues to create, on our planet. In the 1960s, consumer attitude towards clothing shifted drastically when demand for new, disposable clothing skyrocketed. These choices led fashion retailers to give life to the environmentally detrimental breed of “fast fashion.” Moving production from a domestic to an international level, increasing the amount of clothing collections on a yearly basis, and lack of transparency in supply chain are just a few examples of the dangers this industry has created for our planet. The fast fashion industry in particular …

Examining Uranium Mining In The Canyon Mine, Kasha Halbleib Mar 2023

Examining Uranium Mining In The Canyon Mine, Kasha Halbleib

Pace Environmental Law Review

In November 2020, Energy Fuels changed the name of one of its uranium mines from “Canyon Mine” to “Pinyon Plain Mine” in order to put distance between the mine and its historical controversies. However, changing the name does not change the potential harm the mine can cause. Canyon Mine sits fifteen miles from the rim of the Grand Canyon and is built on land sacred to the nearby Havasupai Tribe. The mine stands to not only destroy the health and well-being of the Havasupai people by contaminating their water supply with radioactive elements, but also to destroy the sacred ties …

The Big Chill: Are Public Participation Rights Being Slapp-Ed?, Rachel E. Deming Mar 2023

The Big Chill: Are Public Participation Rights Being Slapp-Ed?, Rachel E. Deming

Pace Environmental Law Review

This article focuses on the Petition Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and addresses a confounding situation caused by Supreme Court precedents that give greater protection to persons who engage in illegal business practices than to citizens who petition their governments. This dichotomy is especially detrimental to environmental protection.

The crux of the conflict lies in which standard courts should use to determine whether the petitioning activity is protected: the subjective Free Speech standard grafted onto Petition Clause activities or the objective standard initially developed by the Supreme Court for petition activities in antitrust cases. The result …

Perceptions Regarding The Impact Of Workplace Attire On Workplace Outcomes, Katherine Karl, Joy V. Peluchette

Journal of the North American Management Society

The purpose of this study was to examine employee perceptions regarding the impact of workplace attire on workplace outcomes and how one is viewed by others. Results from a sample of MBA students indicate that today’s workers do see workplace attire as impacting workplace outcomes and how one is viewed by others. This is somewhat influenced by one’s gender and the value one places on attire. These results and directions for future research are discussed.

Promoting Ethical Corporate Behavior In A Global Context, Jonathon R.B. Halbesleben, M. Ronald Buckley, Michael G. Harvey, Milorad M. Novicevic Mar 2023

Promoting Ethical Corporate Behavior In A Global Context, Jonathon R.B. Halbesleben, M. Ronald Buckley, Michael G. Harvey, Milorad M. Novicevic

Journal of the North American Management Society

The goal of this paper is to provide executives with actionable strategies for promoting ethical corporate behavior through the recognition, understanding, and management of the social comparison process. To that end, we discuss how social comparison may influence the behavior of managers in ethical contexts and particularly how errors in social comparison (like pluralistic ignorance and false consensus) may increase the number of ethical dilemmas in organizations. We suggest that the appropriate management of social comparison could limit the occurrence of unethical behavior in organizations. We conclude with recommendations for executive actions to initiate programs that may facilitate the development …

Where Have All The Leaders Gone? A Holistic Leadership Model For These Uncertain Times, Jann E. Freed Mar 2023

Where Have All The Leaders Gone? A Holistic Leadership Model For These Uncertain Times, Jann E. Freed

Journal of the North American Management Society

After seeking the wisdom of “sages” about what is needed to be a leader in the changing economy, the themes that emerged were developed into a holistic model that builds on creating an environment where people want to work. It is a process model that emphasizes attributes important for making a living and making a life in these uncertain times.

Pointing The Finger At Leadership, Richard A. Barker Mar 2023

Pointing The Finger At Leadership, Richard A. Barker

Journal of the North American Management Society

The word leadership is often used incorrectly to refer to management, supervision, command, and statesmanship. Scholars rarely, if ever, make any distinction among these four different constructs. Most theories of leadership are really theories of supervision, and the words leadership and supervision are used interchangeably. This paper attempts to distinguish between the two.

Measuring The Effectiveness Of A Workplace Diversity Training Program: A Field Study, Kenneth P. De Meuse, Todd J. Hostager, Kathryn S. O'Neill Mar 2023

Measuring The Effectiveness Of A Workplace Diversity Training Program: A Field Study, Kenneth P. De Meuse, Todd J. Hostager, Kathryn S. O'Neill

Journal of the North American Management Society

Although workplace diversity training has been a common practice in American companies for the past 15 years, little systematic assessment has been conducted. It appears that many organizational leaders and human resource professionals simply assume that the training activities had a positive effect. In the current study, a large manufacturing organization was interested in implementing a diversity program company-wide. However, before doing so, a pilot study was conducted with a critical layer of senior management to determine whether the training would be effective. The Workplace Diversity Survey was administered: (a) one week prior to the training, (b) the week immediately …

Fatal Fertilizer: Pfas Contamination Of Farmland From Biosolids And Potential Federal Solutions, Molly Carey Mar 2023

Fatal Fertilizer: Pfas Contamination Of Farmland From Biosolids And Potential Federal Solutions, Molly Carey

Pace Environmental Law Review

Farmers across the country are increasingly discovering devastating levels of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in their soil, water, and farm products from the spread of biosolid fertilizer. Contamination from these “forever chemicals” is causing farmers to close their businesses, lose their incomes and property values, and confront potential ad- verse health effects from toxic exposure. PFAS are not federally regulated, leaving farmers with no options for federal assistance with contamination crises. This article examines federal regulations that govern the spread of biosolids as well as existing and proposed federal regulations of PFAS. To fill in federal regulatory gaps, …

Death By Committee: Reviving Federal Environmental Justice Legislation To Mitigate Disproportionate Impacts On Vulnerable Communities, Sara Babcock

Pace Environmental Law Review

This Note proposes legislation that provides an avenue for protecting the right to a clean and healthy environment by requiring agencies to consider vulnerable communities before initiating large-scale federal projects. Part I lays out the emergence of environmental justice issues in the United States, including its turning point. Part II introduces both successful and failed attempts at federal environmental justice legislation and analyzes why federal environmental justice legislation continuously fails. Part III dis- cusses how executive environmental justice action becomes pointless to the overall progression of environmental justice and examines President Biden’s progress in the first year of his presidency. …
