An Interesting Case Of Disseminated Histoplasmosis In A Patient With Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis, Rachel Ann Pellegrino, Roopa Naik, Atul Bali

Student Publications

Histoplasmosis is a common mycosis in North and Central America caused by Histoplasma capsulatum. Affected patients typically remain asymptomatic. However, in some individuals, histoplasmosis can present as a severe illness, usually occurring in patients with underlying risk factors such as the immunocompromised (e.g., acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), treatment with immunosuppressive agents), and the elderly without underlying immunocompromised conditions. Here, we present a case of disseminated histoplasmosis diagnosed as an incidental finding on bone marrow biopsy while treating a hospitalized patient for hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. The patient presented with weight loss, anorexia, fatigue, and generalized weakness. The patient was successfully treated with …

Ocean Acidification Increases The Impact Of Typhoons On Algal Communities, Callum J. Hudson, Sylvain Agostini, Shigeki Wada, Jason M. Hall-Spencer, Sean D. Connell, Ben P. Harvey

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Long-term environmental change, sudden pulses of extreme perturbation, or a combination of both can trigger regime shifts by changing the processes and feedbacks which determine community assembly, structure, and function, altering the state of ecosystems. Our understanding of the mechanisms that stabilise against regime shifts or lock communities into altered states is limited, yet also critical to anticipating future states, preventing regime shifts, and reversing unwanted state change. Ocean acidification contributes to the restructuring and simplification of algal systems, however the mechanisms through which this occurs and whether additional drivers are involved requires further study. Using monthly surveys over three …

The mathematical study known as queueing theory has recently become a major point of interest for many government agencies and private companies for increasing efficiency. One such application is vehicle queueing at an international port-of-entry (POE). When queueing, fumes from idling vehicles negatively affect the overall health and well-being of the community, especially the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents that work at the POEs. As such, there is a need to analyze and optimize the border crossing queuing operations to minimize wait times and number of vehicles in the queue and, thus, reduce the vehicle emissions. For this …

The Relationship Among Perfectionism, Perceived Stress, And Coping In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Amanda Finley Mar 2023

The Relationship Among Perfectionism, Perceived Stress, And Coping In Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Amanda Finley

Dissertations

Perfectionism in nursing students is an understudied problem that may affect student and workforce success. Perfectionism has been linked to increased stress and less effective coping styles, as well as depression, anxiety and other psychological alterations. However, it has rarely been studied in nursing students. Studying perfectionism in this population is important because it may increase the likelihood that new nurses will struggle with the stress of practice and it could be a significant factor in early career attrition. The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to gain a better understanding of the incidence of perfectionism in a nursing …
