Calm And Ease: The Theory Of Self-Cultivation In Wang Fuzhi's Commentaries On The Book Of Songs, Yang Gao, Jingyi Qu
Calm And Ease: The Theory Of Self-Cultivation In Wang Fuzhi's Commentaries On The Book Of Songs, Yang Gao, Jingyi Qu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Wang Fuzhi's view, the significance of The Book of Songs lay not only in its use for praise and satire, and poetic theory embodied by the poems, but also in the idea of self-cultivation and way of life. In his Commentaries on The Book of Songs, Wang Fuzhi sought an interpretive approach to moral cultivation through the aesthetic practice of poetry, and considered treatment of emotions as key to self-cultivation and way of life, putting forward the theory of "yuqing" (clam and ease). Wang Fuzhi instructed people to be calm in the presence of sorrow and happiness through the …

Another Three Hundred Tang PoemS: Structure And Purport Of Collected Tang Poetry Of Moderate Tone, Xuan, Gu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Collected Tang Poetry of Moderate Tone, compiled by Zou Meizhong during the Daoguang period, was an anthology of Tang poems for rudimentary education. The “moderate tone” first required poetry to have a clear and elegant theme, then considered its structure and rhetoric in accordance with different forms. With this aesthetic purport, Zou Meizhong carefully selected and organized poets and their poems, trying to show the historical change of poetry throughout the whole Tang dynasty. In terms of its pedagogical function, this anthology aimed at teaching children writing skills and cultivating decent personality.
The Dilemma Of Paid Writing And Its Solution: On Yuan Haowen’S Prose Production, Min Yu
The Dilemma Of Paid Writing And Its Solution: On Yuan Haowen’S Prose Production, Min Yu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Paid writing referred to a special creative form that writers were commissioned to compose with a material reward. Paid writing concerned expectations of both the patron and the author, and was subject to other readers’ evaluation of its fairness. The material concern often trapped the author into multiple moral and technical dilemmas. As an exemplar to have solved these dilemmas, Yuan Haowen completed a huge amount of paid writing during the Jin and the Yuan dynasties, due to the particular social environment, his personal identity and experience. For different types of patrons, Yuan Haowen used different writing strategies to maintain …
Seeing Dao Through Art And “Elegant People's Deep Sense Of Beauty”: Shen Zenzhi's Ideas About Literature On Calligraphy And Painting, Yi Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The Chinese society confronted unprecedented changes in the late Qing and early Republican periods. Maintaining “elegant people's deep sense of beauty” in the upheaval was the purpose of Shen Zengzhi, a poet of the “Tongguang Style”. His theory of “three passes” and “elegance” were not only the creative orientation of the “Song Poetry School”, but also the expression of the author's sense of personality, path of learning and cultural accomplishment. These elements were fully demonstrated in Shen's literature on painting and calligraphy, which saw Dao, the cultural spirit of a nation, through art. As “elegant people's deep sense of …
On The Translation Of The Term Tang Chuanqi From A Comparative Perspective And The Modern Evolution Of The Concept Of Chuanqi, Yinning Zhu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The modern understanding of the concept of tang chuanqi (literally, transmission of the strange in the Tang Dynasty) is the result of its evolution in the modern times. Except for Lu Xun's influence, the changing understanding of the concept involves at least three important factors: the theoretical foundation of the classical meaning of the concept, the globalized literary ecology, and the academic mechanism of local thought. This study tries to delineate the meaning evolution of the concept chuanqi from the perspectives of the terminology translation in the Late Qing and the Republic period. Lu Xun's A Brief History of Chinese …
The Multi-Directional Functions Of Late-Qing Drama: On Huang Xieqing's Dramatic Creation, Limin Ma
The Multi-Directional Functions Of Late-Qing Drama: On Huang Xieqing's Dramatic Creation, Limin Ma
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Huang Xieqing was one of major dramatists in the late Qing dynasty. In his life dramatic writing played a key role, through which he demonstrated his intellectual talents as well as his conceptualization of the genre in question as an expression of pragmatic social aspirations. Thanks to his constant self-fashioning through drama and the widespread dissemination of his works, Huang established his name as a talented dramatist. However, such reputation hardly contributed to his pragmatic aspiration for social development. His works thus transformed from metaphoric manifestations of the self to critical reflections upon society, and continued as such thereafter. The …
Acceptance Dilemma And The Value Turn Of Popular Fiction In The Late Qing Dynasty From The Perspective Of Literary History: A Case Study Of Courtesan Novel, Wei Feng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The study of courtesan novels over the last century was essentially a response to the question whether popular fiction in the late Qing dynasty had the value of literary “classics”. Subjected to literary utilitarianism and the dominance of elite culture, literary histories written in the first half of the twentieth century did not give positive evaluations to courtesan novels. However, The Sing-song Girls of Shanghai stood out and was canonized in the academic context of the long-standing concept of “elegance and vulgarity”. Since 1980s, researchers began to reexamine the value of courtesan novels in literary history and to broaden research …
Emotion, Art, And Ritual-Music: A Re-Examination Of The Aesthetic Discourse Of Liang Shuming And Its Intellectual Connotations, Zhen Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article re-examines the intellectual connotations of Liang Shuming's aesthetic discourse from the three aspects of emotion, art, and ritual-music, and by referencing to German thought from Romanticism to philosophy of life. Ontologically, emotion and artovercome the inherent deficiencies of modern Western philosophy of rationalism, and grasp the reality of the cosmos as “life” in the unity of subject and object. Aesthetic discourse points to a moral-emotional approach to the meaning of and foundations for human life. It is historically represented as the practice of ritual-onscious sincerity, establishes the sincerity as the political subject that is autonomous, self-conscious and linked …
Integrated Thought: Variations Between Politics And Aesthetics — The Transmutation Of The Discursive Modes Of “Popularization Of Literature And Art” Since The Twentieth Century, Yunhua Han
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
As a mainstream conceptualization of Chinese literature and art since the 20th century, the popularization of literature and art has produced profound influence on the development of Chinese literature. The 20th century saw three dominant patterns of discourse: the “enlightenment discourse” during the May Fourth Movement, the “discourse of the masses” in the 1930s, and the “discourse of the people” established by the two Speeches. As the three modes evolved, they witnessed the exchange and adjustment of practical subject and object as well as the conflict between literary ontology and functionalism. The popularization of literature and art was not …
Out Of Sex-Centrism: A Study Of Sedgwick's Queer Performativity, Xinyao Huang
Out Of Sex-Centrism: A Study Of Sedgwick's Queer Performativity, Xinyao Huang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Since the 20th century, psychoanalysis has been both a discursive resource for and shackle on feminism, which is prominently manifested in the “sex-centrism” orientation. Although queer theory has broken the hegemony of heterosexuality and enriched the research on the differences of marginalized groups, sex-centrism has been a sustaining problem. The sex-centrism orientation is manifested in at least two aspects: the linguistic or theoretical positioning sex at the core of the understanding of subject, the obsession with the sexual repression hypothesis and anti-repression strategies such as subversion, exposure, and disenchantment. In her critical reflection on “Theory,” Sedgwick revised Butler's gender performativity …
The Conceptual Transformation Of Literary Aesthetic Theory: From The Expansion Of Modernity To The Construction Of Contemporaneity, Daren Lai, Nan Guo
The Conceptual Transformation Of Literary Aesthetic Theory: From The Expansion Of Modernity To The Construction Of Contemporaneity, Daren Lai, Nan Guo
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Literary aesthetic theory in China has been constantly expanded and constructed with modernity spirit, primarily aiming at the independence of literature that emphasizes aesthetic characteristics and artistic principles, so that literary aesthetics and emotion representation may be integrated into the aesthetics of emotions or of the aesthetics of life. Literary aesthetic theory develops upon the tradition of modernity with a focal shift from aesthetic characteristics to aesthetic essence. Thus, literary aesthetics becomes more self-conscious, with literary independence and self-discipline taking on new pertinence, the understanding of literature's aesthetic characteristics and artistic principles is more profound and systemized, and theoretical connotations …
Organization, Individual Belonging And Cultural Block: The Cultural Mechanism In Liberated Areas And The Formation Of “Zhao Shuli's Direction”, Zichun Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In August 1947, “Zhao Shuli's direction” was established in Jin-Ji-Lu-Yu (or Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan) Liberated Areas as the last cultural and literary flag set up in liberated areas. Its formation echoed the CPC cultural organizations’ guidance on Zhao's literary activities and recognition of his position, and also embodied Zhao's balance between the self and revolution. At the same time, this direction was also a result of the Jin-Ji-Lu-Yu Liberated Areas’ painstaking attempt to construct their own culture and to confirm their own cultural landscape. All these factors showed the cultural orientation and mechanism in liberated areas.
On The Female Image In Walter Benjamin's Urban Studies, Lu Huang
On The Female Image In Walter Benjamin's Urban Studies, Lu Huang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Walter Benjamin's urban studies contain exquisite and comprehensive depictions of the female image. As a representative of dialectical images, the female figure, thanks to its ambivalence, demonstrates the rejection of dualism underlining the system of irony. This article analyzes Benjamin's thinking on the questions of sense and technology from the dialectical perspective of the female image in his urban studies. In Benjamin's writings, the re-enchanting feminine atmosphere engages such life experiences as gazing, caressing, and breathing, which allows the image of female mixed with that of animals to be connected to the senses of sight, hearing, touch and smell. The …
Gilles Deleuze's Reality Tactics Of “Image-In-Itself”, Xinru Nie
Gilles Deleuze's Reality Tactics Of “Image-In-Itself”, Xinru Nie
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Gilles Deleuze introduces the concept of “image-in-itself” in his film theories. Based on the origin of things, this concept gradually develops into “image”, and its reality is embedded in this process. Although “reality” is not explicitly discussed in film theories, it can be found in Deleuze's theory related to “generating”, and its elements exist in Deleuze's classification of films. Deleuze uses reality as the principle of film classification, establishing a unique way of film classification.
Why Is Being Interdisciplinary So Hard To Do For Stanley Fish? A Critical Review With Regard To The Interdisciplinarity And Antidisciplinarity Of Theory, Houliang Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Stanley Fish diagnoses a fundamentally antidisciplinary impulse in the interdisciplinary project of theory, which is barely possible in Fish's view. Although interdisciplinary cooperation seems an ideal goal, it is unrealizable to replace drastically academic disciplines with a system based on undisciplined or antidisciplinary principles. While the interdisciplinary impulse of theory had been more politically motivated around the 1980s, interdisciplinary practices since the 1990s are increasingly focused on methodological innovation and disciplinary re-justification. When interdisciplinarity is becoming a new hot topic, it is of great significance to re-examine Fish's proposition about it, which will help us keep sober about the hope …
Jacques Derrida On Literary Language: A Case Study Of Romeo And Juliet, Jinlong Xiao
Jacques Derrida On Literary Language: A Case Study Of Romeo And Juliet, Jinlong Xiao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The substance of language and the pattern of literary language are central to Jacques Derrida's early theoretical explorations. In 1971, Derrida published the masterpiece “Signature Event Context,” in which he proposed the deconstructive language theory by revisiting Anglo-American speech act theory. He pinpointed that language is not an instrument of recording, but a performative act of doing things. In the mid- and late 1980s he published “Aphorism Countertime” and “‘This Strange Institution Called Literature’: An Interview with Jacques Derrida”, indicating that the characteristics of literary language is fragmented and dualized. Derrida defined such a language as “aphorism” and elaborated on …
Isolation Vs. Connection: Metaverse From The Perspective Of Structure Of Feeling In The Post-Pandemic Era, Weile Bi
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The metaverse fever at the end of 2021 reflects both the development of virtual reality technology and the structures of feeling in the post-pandemic era. Metaverse is a fictional digital utopia in Neal Stephenson's post-cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, which, together with another original concept, “avatar,” has a paradoxical characteristic. Stephenson's cyber imagination deconstructs the cyberpunk dystopian narrative and demonstrates the transformative power of techno-optimism. In the post-pandemic era, the business elite reinterprets this constructive utopian concept as “metaverse” to counter the fear and loneliness in the paradox of “isolation-connection.” Emphasizing the emotional compensation despite physical barriers, the revivalists of …
The Other Of Time: The Metaverse And Its Potential For Slow Time, Yiran Xiong
The Other Of Time: The Metaverse And Its Potential For Slow Time, Yiran Xiong
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In essence, the metaverse can be regarded as a time process, which will magnify and refine the jump, reversal, and delay of the subject against the flow of time, so as to show the intervention of non-linear time in the subjective perception. Secondary to time, speed generates and presents the synthesis of its internal dynamic relations based on time. As a mirror presentation of the temporal logic of modernity, slow time in the metaverse not only inverts the modern cult of speed, but also resists algorithmic time and its determinism. Slow time acts simultaneously as a new mode of perception …
Toward A Convergent Metaverse: Video Games And The Transformation Of The Digital Body, Shiyi Wei
Toward A Convergent Metaverse: Video Games And The Transformation Of The Digital Body, Shiyi Wei
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Video games are one of the main precursors of metaverse because they have constructed the digital living environment, which is the prototype of metaverse that we experience. The creation and transformation of the digital body in the world of games show that metaverse and the world we live in are simultaneously moving toward the full convergence of virtuality and reality. As a particularly important quality of video games, immersion is reflected in the presence brought about by the media environment created by immersive technologies and the flow experience generated by game activities. Immersion often requires the body's distraction from physical …
From Panorama To Metaverse: A Media Archaeological Perspective, Yan Zhang
From Panorama To Metaverse: A Media Archaeological Perspective, Yan Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The existing discourse of Metaverse mostly adopts the methods of technicism and linear narration, and pays too much attention to the changes of the appearance of media technology, thus taking Metaverse as the culmination of the development of digital media. However, such discussion ignores not only the diversity of Metaverse in history and future, but also the users' aesthetic experience. And the problem can be corrected by means of media archaeology and body phenomenology. Through media archaeology, we find a repressed tactile media lineage in art history, which puts the body perception-kinesthetic sensation at the core, and so does Metaverse, …
The Double Labyrinth Of Concept: A Study Of Video Games Within The Framework Of Metaverse, Chao Guo, Xiwen Geng
The Double Labyrinth Of Concept: A Study Of Video Games Within The Framework Of Metaverse, Chao Guo, Xiwen Geng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
The concept of metaverse was raised in 1992 by Neal Stephenson and was rediscovered in 2021 due to the appropriation of Microsoft, Roblox and Facebook. As Microsoft's MR and Roblox's VR are related to video games, it is only natural that games (especially video games) are brought into scholarly discourse as a potential means to the advent of metaverse in the Cyber Age. As “meta-” etymologically refers to “beyond” and “verse/universe” consists of the dimensions of time and space, we define metaverse as a matrix of space-time beyond the logic of the real universe and examine the potential of video …
Why Facebook? — On The Relevance Of Metaverse To Contemporary Social Media, Xing Zheng
Why Facebook? — On The Relevance Of Metaverse To Contemporary Social Media, Xing Zheng
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This paper starts with the debate over “real-virtual” social media, and explores the underlying reasons why contemporary social media such as Facebook actively involve in the metaverse. Social media, in essence, cannot be viewed as a “virtual” cyberspace, nor could the “status” on someone’s social media be regarded as a beguiling “performance.” Social media are actually reliant on constantly drawing raw material from real liferesource, and this act itself is operated by blending “the real” and “the virtual.” Although advocates of metaverse advertise its innovative potential, metaverse also operates on the convergence of “the real” and “the virtual.” It is …
Virtual Reality And Metaversal Literature, Xuhong Song
Virtual Reality And Metaversal Literature, Xuhong Song
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
This article selects the concept of “virtual reality” as the starting point to think about metaversal literature, as it is not only one of the core technologies supporting metaverse, but also refers to the most basic features or functions of literature. The typical characteristics of VR such as immersion, interactivity and imagination (multi-sensibility) are largely parallel to literature. Although multi-sensibility seems to be rejected by the traditional theories on literary imagination, in accordance with relevant research in the fields of neurobiology and iconology, the “multi-sensual image” formed by VR may be more productive in achieving empathic effect and ethical purpose …

Carbon Emission And Sequestration During The End-Permian Mass Extinction, Ying Cui
Carbon Emission And Sequestration During The End-Permian Mass Extinction, Ying Cui
Sustainability Seminar Series
Dr. Ying Cui’s current projects include the carbon cycle feedbacks that aid in the recovery of climatic perturbation during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM, 56 Ma) and the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME, 252 Ma). She uses novel isotopes such as boron, lithium and compound-specific carbon isotopes in sedimentary rocks to unravel changes in ocean chemistry, continental weathering, and changes in atmospheric CO2 levels. She will participate in an International ocean Discovery Project (IODP) Expedition 395 at Reykjanes Ridge and serve as an organic geochemist to understand the link between mantle convection and climate change in the late Cenozoic.
